I appreciate the D News for covering cross country. I love to watch these young athletes compete. Several years ago I had never watched a cross country meet but after one of our children take up the sport I really enjoy them now. Good luck to all the athletes in their region and then state meets.
Way to be Gutz! You deserved the win.
Congrats to Danielle Menlove on her big win. I have been following her running career for about 4 years now(my kids were on the same track club). It's exciting to see her finally get to compete with the high schoolers.
She has multiple national championships in track and field. Between her 7th and 8th grade school years she won nationals in the 1500 and 3000. If you convert her times to 1600 and 3200 I believe they would be 5a state records(see www.usatf.org).
I was very surprised to see her finish a close second in her 1st couple of big invites in xc. She seems to be back to form. If she has any weaknesses it is running in big crowds and adverse weather. I think she is an even better track runner than xc.
Look for great things from this kid. She will re-right the utah state record books this year in track and field as a 9th grader!
Congratulations to both the boys and girls Cross Country Teams at Davis! Great job!
its cross country... who cares!
It will be interesting to follow the prep career of Danielle Menlove! Lets hope that she continues to stay healthy both physically and psychologically.
So many very young female distance standouts experience jeopardizing injuries such as stress fractures, compartmental syndrome, fasciatis as well as amenorrhea, not to mention psychological issues such as eating disorders and plain old burnout before they finish high school. If any of these things are creeping into her life (or any prep female) at this age, it needs to be addressed now. After all, running is a lifetime sport!
When I watch other top runners like Shalaya Kipp, I am impressed by her physical strength, endurance, speed and general control of her race. There is a maturity that is rarely seen in high school athletics. She appears incredibly healthy and has been consistently improving each year. She also shows grace and style no matter her result. I think we will be reading about this athlete in future years.
Plenty of people care. If you don't - then stay off of the comment board and stay away from a cross country article. Great thing about cross country is that all those who are on the team get to compete. Better than sitting the bench on a football team and still thinking you are some type of special "athlete" because you are on a below average football team. High school cross country runners and teams in Utah are some of the most talented in the country. What other high school sport can truly claim that?
Des news thank you for covering the race. Cross Country is truly a great sport and the more you share the more of us learn that. Some of our state's greatest athletes compete in this sport and are amazing stories. I appreciate your coverage!!
I, too, appreciate the coverage. It was a well-run meet on a beautiful course, even if I was drenched with teeth-chattering from all the running around and cheering (I guess I shouldn't have left the umbrella in the car). One thing I appreciated was watching the gutsy performances by the many, many kids, not just the leaders, but also those bringing up the rear, many of whom were struggling with injuries or illnesses. You find that watching any sport, pretty much; once you see how much of themselves the kids invest in their chosen sport, you have that much more admiration.
Davis girls are nationally ranked (top 20) and so is Timpview. The state meet on 10/22 should be a great showcase of some of the best teams in the country, which Utah has shown themselves to have regularly over the past 20 years.
I am so glad you cover cross country meets. These athletes are very dedicated to their sport. It takes so much inner strength to run fast and hard. If you do not run, it is hard to understand. Here is the challenge. Go for a run today!!!!!!
Talley is the man!! He is the reason the XC and track teams are such a success.
Of course menlove will set new records!! No question! You rock D-Men!
