She is horrible... | 10:45 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Hey, my fellow neighbors in Utah,

The VERY PARTY PROMISING TO LOWER TAXES IS THE ONE THAT HAS SPENT SO MUCH OVER THE PAST 8 YEARS that the only real answer is to raise taxes to pay back the deficit. I guess it would be natural for us Utahns to vote for lower taxes (very in line with our high bankruptcy rate).

"Small town values" are a fraud. No one is better than anyone else because they're from a small town.

Hunting moose doesn't make you a leader. Making appropriate judgments does.

You should not vote for a leader that is like you. How about a leader that is even smarter than you and the rest of us? Is that an elitist? Does it make you uncomfortable to vote for smart people? A dull and poorly spoken President can and has been an embarrassment to this nation.

It makes me sad to think that my fellow Utahns still think Republicans are good people. They have turned very evil. In four years, they'll be good again, but they are currently not our best option.
She won what??????? | 10:45 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
I have seen many Utah woman who I would vote for the VP or even President of the United States, Hockey Moms maybe, but not Joe-6-pak. I do not want an average person, for President or Vice President. I want a better than average person. Someone who graduated at the top of the class not at the bottom.
Mrs. Palin is not qualified for my vote. Any Utah highschool debate team member could have won that debate on points! Winking and being cute is not the way to run a county. "Cliches" are not answers. The debate reminded of the movie "Bull Durham" when Kevin Coster was teaching the new kid how to be a big leaguer, "you have to memorize your cliches". I belive someone has filled her head with cliches but no facts. Is this VP material?

Regarding backwater Utah, I'm always amused at that perception. As one who has traveled extensively throughout the United States--48 of the 50 states on many, many occasions--and lived in Europe twice, I can confidently say that, generally speaking, the populace of Utah is better educated and more knowledgable about world events than virtually any other state I've visited.

More languages are spoken per capita, and more people have genuinely experienced more cultures more deeply than anywhere else on earth.

Most often, those who travel to other places do so as a tourist. Getting acquainted with a culture by virtue of a day trip from a cruise ship is how many gain what they feel is broad knowledge.

Most often, those accusing Utah of being "backwoods" are only indicting themselves as to their own lack of experience. Folks in Utah know what they believe and can usually clearly explain why they believe it. That's more than I can say for most places.
jbox | 11:14 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Biden won because he had "something to say". He didn't rely on ridiculously folksy cliches or cutesy winks, nods & smiles. He didn't cherry-pick the questions he wanted to answer and then squeeze in an infomercial about "Mavericks" and other self-promoting BS in it's place. Biden didn't fill his answers up with rambling gibberish that had nothing to do with the questions. BIDEN WON FAIR AND SQUARE because he's a brilliant & knowledgeable elder statesman, a world class diplomat of over 30 years. He's not some backwoods, religious extremist kook who has his head up her ass like Palin. He doesn't have diarreah of the mouth and constipation of the brain.

When you pick the next leader of our great country, in times like these, be honest with yourself and take a closer look and you'll see that SARAH PALIN IS NOT QUALIFIED TO LEAD THIS COUNTRY or anything more than the smallest most remote city in America. She's an insult to anyone who loves this country.

All the admiration of Palin in the debate reminds me of the cliche high school student council elections. You have the kid who'd actually know how to run the class, and the kid who doesn't know much at all about running a class....but hey he/she's popular and cute so they get all the votes.

I am a Utahn and I hate Palin.

The Des News and KSL are worst than Fox news, and that is hard to do.

I love Utah, but I hate the politics and lack of morality here.
Mormon Moderate | 11:35 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Sarah Palin lost this contest in the same way the Utah State lost to BYU. Sure, she scored 14 in the 4th quarter, which is better than the shutout by Biden that was predicted, but ultimately, she still loses to Biden by 20. And that wink she gave to the audience almost made me throw up. Please, ma'am, stop faking being a folksy, down-home representative of the common man.
Talk About Exploiting | 11:37 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
I have enjoyed reading the many comments. But one question I have besides who won what and really what does it matter, because it was scripted, and Palin was allowed to not answer the questons ask, is what in the name of you know what was she doing holding a baby that should have been at the hotel(or not even in town)in bed? Also why was her pregnant daughter up on stage? Talk about exploiting. What is that all about? Is she going to take her kids with her when she has to go out of the country to represent the U.S.? I think it's wonderful that she loves her children, but give me a break, is it proper to have a small child up at 11pm at night with all of the people and media around keeping them awake? I don't think that shows any kind of good judgement to exploit your kids for your gains. Sickening.
Biden | 11:38 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
got a couple of things wrong. At least he tried to give facts. Palin got things wrong as well. If you're going to mention one, you need to mention the other. However, you need to remember that Palin had very few facts to give along with he canned speech. There is nothing new you learned about the platform from her. If Biden got some facts wrong, At least he had facts to start with. Plus, talk about making stuff up? McCain's camp makes it up as they go along. Palin just memorized them.

Most Utahns speak with fork tongue therefore Sarah Palin blends in with their way of thinking = two faced and bold faced liars -- Sarah Palin wants more power as the VP watch out she will pop of McCain as she has alrady made the statement of the Palin / McCain ticket Utahns can be proud for sure of their pick eeeek!
SP--Cheap Salesmanship | 12:04 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
The Republican Party is acting like a used car salesman. They keep showing us nice paint jobs, the car stereo and the vanity mirror. They keep avoiding the blown engine, the leaking oil and the bent frame. The Republican Party has been severely damaged by the car wreck of the Bush Administration, and no amount of lipstick, you betchas or camera winks is going to take that away.

Utah Republicans were mesmerized by Bushs claims of a high moral and ethical standard imbued in him from his Christian values. You were deceived and the whole nation has paid dearly for your mistake. Dont be fooled again. I implore you to look beyond the cheap sales performance to the issues that really matter to all of us.

My Republican Neighbors and friends, PLEASE use CRITICAL THINKING while evaluating your vote. Look beyond the surface performance and under the hood at the real issues at hand that will deeply affect our lives, our families and our community.

Palin had a miserable performance in the debate. She demonstrated that she has no experience or knowledge with any topic that was discussed. With such lack of knowledge if for some unfortunate reason she became President she would be helpless in a pool of sharks.

Breath of fresh air? In order to be a maverick, in order to change Washington, one has to a least have an idea how Washington works.

If McCain is elected President, this country had better pray for his health.
SP--Debate Substance Missing | 12:16 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
While listening to the debate, I kept notes of facts I wanted to check later and of the positions that both candidates held on anything. Few of her facts held up as factual and she took very very few positions on anythingbut she was adept at giving vague general comments and cute colloquialisms. I suppose its easy to keep your campaign promises when you dont make any.

PLEASE, I beg of you. Follow the advice of your Prophet. STUDY, EVALUATE and LEARN about each candidate. Ponder your choice, not just in your heart, but in your head too and THEN, pray about your decision. Dont skip the critical part of doing the hard work of CRITICAL THINKING FIRST!
To Richard | 12:23 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
I have some advice for you. Move to a blue state.

I'm in one now. We have all Democrats in every office and our economy is worse than the national average. Our education is lower than average. Our state supreme court just ruled in favor of pedophiles in our public schools claiming their privacy trumps the safety of our kids. Our taxes are among the highest in the nation and yet our roads are crumbling and our school class sizes are MUCH larger than Utah's.

Before you spout off at how stupid and backwater Utahns are, why don't you come see how "sophisticated" we are in the blue states! The liberals really know how to run things! Tax, tax, tax, tax, tax. That's what they know how to do. Oh, and protect criminals. Heaven forbid one of them suffer a loss of rights!
Carlos A. | 12:28 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Palin is too similar too George W. Bush. Only humans can make the same mistake three times.

What is wrong in having intelligent leaders as Obama and Biden as our leaders? They are either perfect or share my religious beliefs, but in general are a much better option than McCain and Palin.
Utah Voter | 12:33 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
First, I am not an idiot. I've tested over and over again at nearly double the average IQ, have degrees from the best schools, and teach at the University level.

In the debate, I thought Palin did better than expected. Which I know is not saying much.

However, Biden did worse than expected. More alarming is the fact that neither he nor Obama have ever spelled out the "how" in their plan. They promise a "chicken in every pot," but who's going to pay for those chickens? Reminds me of the guy who offers to buy lunch then needs to borrow $20 when the check comes.

Finally, I have a concern about Biden's mastery of the facts. For example, stating that "global warming" is 100% man made and that it will take 10+ years to get oil from off shore drilling are his opinions and certainly not backed by any credible source.

I also felt his stories of growing up in the 'hood were a joke coming from the son of a rich car salesman!

If nothing else, Palin wasn't phony. Biden, on the other hand pretended to be something he is not.
To SP | 1:08 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
How DARE you bring the prophet into this? The Church has remained politically neutral.

If you really MUST know, as one who opposes abortion on demand, the loss of our 2nd amendment rights, over-taxing our citizens, and gay marriage, it's really an easy choice for me to make. It won't be Democrat. When/if that party's national platform allows for dissenting points of view on these and other issues, I may consider them.

If the Democrats win the election, so be it. It is a majority vote and that is the law. However, I am prepared to take up arms if my basic freedoms are violated and many others I know are willing to do the same.
Eye Contact | 1:20 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Did it ever occur to you who love Palin's eye contact to the camera so much, that it is a lot easier to spout your canned/rehearsed answers toward an inanimate object than to look squarely at the moderator when she asks the questions.
Re: Critical Thinking | 1:22 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
OK, let's apply some critical thinking.

Socialism does not work. Never has, never will. If you want to debate that point, name me one place where it has worked.

Second, Universal Health Care is a nice goal, but has failed dismally in the UK where a recent study showed that dogs and cats get better treatment than people and in Canada where people are dying waiting for approval for surgery. The fact is that thousands of Canadians pay out of their own pocket for coverage in the US.

Third, the Obama/Biden plan for raising taxes on the "rich" and businesses simply doesn't raise enough money. They will ultimately need to raise taxes on the middle class. Question: when HASN'T a Democratic president/congress raised taxes? Name one who hasn't.

Fourth, are we ready to abandon our beliefs and values such as the right to life for the unborn and the sanctity of marriage because we are afraid of the future? The Democrats have had the majority in the House and Senate for two years. I ask you, what have they done?

I want answers, not emotional blabber. Please, answers, liberals. I'm listening.

As a 25 year Alaskan, it is humiliating to be from the same state as Gov. Palin. I can't write in less than 200 words why Gov. Palin is unqualified to run as VP. Poor judgement in her own personal life is only one of too many to count- Why would an expectant mother with her 5th child, with ruptured membranes, board a commercial airplane, for a 8-10 hour flight, bypass a level 3 NICU with an at risk unborn child, then drive 50 miles to deliver in a hospital that practices underwater births?? If she is such a strong woman, why did she chose to conceal her pregnancy until the 7TH month while being Governor?? Just proves she would make a great actress but very poor leader of the Free World we know.
Rob L | 1:35 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
For those who think Palin isn't ready to be VP- Look at Biden. While Palin did not answer every question, niether did Biden, and while Biden has spent 35 years in the Senate, his answers show he is living in a fantasy world and truth isn't a concern to him. He gave numerous false statements such as France and the U.S pushing Hezbollah out of Lebanon, Pakistan having long-range missiles, falsely comparing spending in Iraq and Afghanistan, stating that Article I of the constitution is about the executive branch and claiming he goes to a diner closed for 20 years. These falsehoods show he will simply lie at any time or he is simply ignorant or both, and show that it is Biden, not aPalin, who is not ready to be VP.

SP--- what an arrogant statement to make...you basically said that anyone who agrees with Palin and McCain haven't done any critical thinking, pondering and praying. How condescending and arrogant of a position to make!

I guess one could retort that since you feel the need to vote for someone who voted for infanticide 3x is ignoring the same counsel that you admonish others to follow.

-William Ayers
-Rev Wright
-raising taxes
-can't give a tax break to 95% of Americans because it's only about 70% of Americans who pay taxes
-Global Warming 100% man-made - Really? Says Biden?

Please feel free to have your opinions but your condescending attitude about people who don't come to the same conclusion as you says more about where you put your faith and allegiance than it does about those who oppose your candidate!

Where have you been for the past eight years? Have you not seen the results of having a Red country ran by right wing Christian values, family values president?

Im not sure my family can survive another four years of your values. The last thing our country needs is more Red blooded lies and corruption. Its time for a change in Washington and its time for a change away from corrupt and evil values.
Not Phony? Are you serious? | 1:43 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Palin's performance during the debate was better than previous interviews, but it was a rehearsed performance. Her first question, Can I call you Joe? What if he had said, please call me Senator Biden? "Say it ain't so Senator Biden" just does not have that cute ring to it.
Senator Biden gave an emotional reply based on a painful personal experience what was Palin's response? She just went directly to her next rehearsed talking point. I would think that a mother would have more feeling and empathy.
What is really frightening was Palin's comment on wanting the VP to have more power than the constitution allows. I believe that the founding fathers were inspired when drafting the constitution. In the last days the constitution will hang by a thread. Our last VP went against the constitution to get more power. Sarah wants even more power for the office. Also, What should we think of a person that willfully disobeys a court ordered subpoena? Is Palin above the law?
I hope that when this is all over, Palin returns to her home and we never hear anything more about her. I'm afraid that that will not be, thanks John.

It is amazing that Utahns will buy any swill the GOP will serve up. It is the Republicans that didn't want Romney for President or Vice President BECAUSE of his religion. On the contrary Palin's witch-hunting religion plays well in Utah. Give me a break. It's the Democratic Party that is not biased against someone's religion - we have Harry Reid as our top ranking elected Democrat in the country until Barack takes the oath and we didn't care about his crazy minister and we don't care about Sarah's crazy minister either (nor the crazies who endorsed McCain).
SP--Pray & Vote | 2:00 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
RE: To SP
What I really ment is what I've said before:

PLEASE DONT PRAY AND VOTE AGAIN!

Your prayers and your president have already hurt our country bad enough. I just cant imagine that this is what you and your God had in mind when you voted for George Bush, Jr.

Possibly, its time to consider a new method for your voting strategy. Along with prayer, I wouldnt recommend astrology, reading the intestines of your family pet or any other form of supernatural mysticism either. Possibly, its time to consider an alternate route like the arduous task of carefully studying the issues, using critical reasoning and then making an informed and educated decision.

Based upon your past success, any, just even a smidgen of critical thinking could greatly improve your odds of success at electing leaders that will actually help our country.
Re:SP | 2:01 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Your family will not survive another 4 years? That's a little dramatic.

But let's stick to facts. It's the Democrats who have ruled the House and Senate the past 2 years. And where has that got us? Let's stop pretending that all of the corruption came from the GOP. Not when the Democrats had the power, including "oversight" of the banking and finance committees in both house and senate.
Re: tru_enuf | 2:05 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Yes, the Democratic Party is not biased against any one single religion. They merely seem to be biased against all religions. How else can they embrace abortion, gay marriage, light/no punishment for criminals, legalized drugs for "medicinal" purposes, etc., etc. Big Government doesn't like any competition. And that includes religion.

More than that have been killed in car accidents this year in America.

I served in Vietnam Jan. 1968 and In 3 weeks we lost 5,000 killed- A Democrat ran that war. If you are trying to prove a Democrat could do a better Job than a Republican running a war- You must be off your Meds. or on something worse.

Gov. Palin did an excellent job and so did Biden, However Palin didn't lie. Biden told out right lies. All of you liberals always bring up something about Bushes lies (even though he didn't) But you retreat from lies from your own party. I see liberals call "Neocons" hypocrites on this message board all the time, well, back at you. The Liberal mission statement should be " don't confuse me with the facts, I've already made up my mind".

Ronald Reagan was portrayed as being an "air head" by the media and the left---but he easily won two terms in office.

Whether you are inclined to think Reagan was a good president or not, the fact remains that Reagan was endeared by the public-at-large and will go down in history as being instumental in ending the Cold War.

Palin may not have in-depth experience on a national level---yet. However said, she's a quick study and a good communicator. Palin goes beyond the typical political rhetoric and connects with people at the grass roots level; the "heart level."

Ronald Reagan will always be referred to as the "The Great Communicator;" he connected with the people. So does Sarah Palin.

Palin will be a force to reckon with whether McCain wins or not in this election---you'd better get used to it!

Go Sarah!

will you please lead the way and make a case for whom you are going to vote detailing your critical thinking skills in coming to your conclusion? Don't say a word about whom you are not going to vote but only for whom you will vote.

I'd love to see you critical thinking skills and depth of your thinking in coming to your voting conclusion.

RE: Critical Thinking

Instead of focusing on your fears of the future, possibly you should look for real answers for todays real problems.

I lived in Canada for just over two years and Ive never once met a Canadian that would trade their health care system for ours. Our health care system is NOT working and it is in serious need of reform!

Exactly whos going to pay for this six trillion dollar war? A better question to ask would be: When HASNT a democrat saved our country and our economy from the reckless spending of the Republicans? Remember Nixon, Reagan and Bush?

This country has had enough of your Christian values. Im tired of gross economic negligence, wars based on lies, torturing prisoners, suspended civil rights, tax cuts for the rich, blatant manipulation of the media, covert spies being outed, alienation of all of our allies, and denial of humans role in global warming. Im tired of conservative values. Im tired of corruption and deception.

Lets talk about the real problems our country faces NOW, not just your imagined fears. Look beyond your fears of what just might possibly happen and accept the truth for what IS HAPPENING NOW!

Possibly I am condescending and arrogant with my position, Charles. But, please remember that we live in a state where liquor laws cannot be changed without a statement from the Mormon Church.

This is also the state that has been entirely dominated by Republicans for several decades yet we still hear endless stories of republican political corruption. But why are they being corrupt? They dont need to be since theyre the ones in power. Whats up with that?

It was at BYU as a Young Republican that I gained my political training and it was on my Mormon mission that I began my training in Critical Reasoning. Ive spent 12 years involved in Utah politics and quite frankly, Ive only met a hand full of Utah Republicans that relied on their ability to reason and think critically over their dogmatic beliefs.

Im sure that outside of Utah there are many Republicans who do use critical reasoning as their source of knowledge. Sadly, from my experience here in Utah, that phenomenon is rare.
