THE LATE GAME HEROICS WERE AMAZING!
lost in DC | 3:36 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Glad the Utes won and are still in consideration for a BcS bowl, but I marvel at the comment made by Schoeffler, saying the Beavers still had a shot. Shows just how corrupt the BcS is - even had Oregon State won last night and were to win out the rest of the season, they would have still had two losses, having lost to that powerhouse known as Stanford and having been humiliated by Penn State.

Lest our friends in Boise or Hawaii forget, Utah played in the Fiesta Bowl when schools from non-BcS conferences had to be ranked in the top 6 in the BcS rankings - Boise and Hawaii never got that high, only making it in after the BcS expanded it to the top 12. and while mock BcS polls have Byu at 9 or 10 in BcS standings, they would still have to climb higher to have qualified under the standard the Utes did in 2004. Not saying they won't make it, they've looked very impressive, and Utah's win last night helps Byu almost as much as it did the Utes.
Classless! | 6:34 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Great win for our Utes, but I just have to say that I was very unimpressed with how the coaching staff (particularly Coach Whitingham), the fans, and even some players were handling the pressure of this tight battle. I couldn't believe so many fans were boooing Johnson after one particularly bad series and that the fans, many of which profess to be religious people (though I must admit a lot of our fans don't surprise me here) would actually chant the words B.S. (not the initials, the words). Coach Whitingham looked like he was going to have a fit 5-6 times after some excellent calls by the ref. When you're wrong, Whit, it's obvious. Finally, when our players start playing "a little" too dirty, that's when the coaching staff needs to set the example. But I know we'll hardly get it from Whit. These actions were the epitome of classlessness. OSU's coach, on the other hand, is a class act. He celebrated Sakoda's field goal in the end. He took the loss ins tride. Can some things change for us, so we don't look like sore losers, poor sports, and flat out dumb to our opposition?

Congrats to the Utes on a solid win last night. That was impressive and it shows that they are a very clutch team. I don't understand why the fans rushed the field though. When you are the ranked team playing at home against a team that doesn't even have a winning record, what is that all about? Maybe it's because I wasn't there that I don't quite understand that.
Hero Of Canton | 7:55 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
You better believe we were booing Johnson, his play was horrible last night and was just like every other game this year...he shows enough flashes of brilliance to keep us from booing him the moment he steps out of the tunnel but his lack of judgement and apparenty inability to take care of the ball are a growing concern.

The Utes got lucky last night to win this one. OSU completes another play or two and has luck on their side and they win this by two touchdowns easy.
Cougar Fan... | 8:16 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
The fans rushed the field not because they just beat a 2-3 OSU team but because of the highly improbably and emotional way in which it happened. Most of us in the stadium had all but given up on winning that game and having a chance at an unbeaten season when OSU scored their TD with 2:23 left. To come back from the dead in that manner was so incredibly emotional, the fans just went nuts when Sakoda's kick sailed through the uprights.

I didn't personally rush the field but to experience that roller coaster of emotion in the last two minutes of a key game, I totally understand the reaction.

Look at it this way, at least the fans didn't tear down the goal posts. That will happen in November after Utah beats BYU to clinch the BCS berth.
Gary | 8:21 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I don't understand why the Utes stayed with so many long passes through most of the game. The short passing game was no where to be found which I thought was a poor game plan. Utes were lucky.
Go Cougars | 8:25 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Wow, good job Utes. I was pulling for you.... I want two undefeated teams in the holy war! Way to come through in the clutch... As a side note, just another example of MWC dominance over Pac 10 this year.
BcS Official | 8:34 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
All the BCS official saw was an average Utah team that is lucky to have such a good kicker and the benefit of a questionable call at the end. The BCS couldn't have been too thrilled at the prospect of having to let Utah into the party later this year.

On the other hand he probably left town thinking they didn't have too much to worry about because the way Utah plays it will be pretty difficult to survive the whole season without a loss. Sakota won't be able to bail them out each and every time Johnson and Ludwig dig them into a hole.
OSU was 2-2 going in ... | 8:46 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
to last night's game. Let's not get too excited. But you've got to love the fact that the MWC is 6-1 against the PAC 10.
Re: BcS Official | 9:21 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Do you mean like an average TDS team that had to rely on a questionable call at the end to beat an 0-4 Washington team?
Re: BcS Official | 9:23 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
"All the BCS official saw was an average Utah team that is lucky to have such a good kicker and the benefit of a questionable call at the end."

Yeah, you zoobs wouldn't know anything about winning games thanks to questionable calls at the end, would you?

At least the team we snuck by on the last play isn't 0-4 this year.

And since your Y "education" has left you mathematically challenged, I'll remind you that Utah still would have one even if the 2-point conversion had failed.....the margin would've been less is all.
Cody | 9:23 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I was so disappointed with Johnsons showing. He is so erratic and jittery. He makes me nervous watching him. So what if he can run, a QB is a decision making leader who can find the weaknesses in a defense and execute. In his case especially, decision making and leadership abilities are far more important. very close and scary to watch. I am not concerned with him at the helm. Max with rip the utes apart. Its on baby. BCS here we come!
Unkown | 9:27 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Enjoy the win Ute fans. Your team has one more test to pass before the big rivary game against BYU. That's the TCU game. The Utah offense better work on improving thier turnovers, because it's not going to get any easier from here on out.
M Bolton | 9:38 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Yes, we won, but we should be very concerned about things that have been going on each game this season that we fail to correct. Johnson is a big concern, it appears that he is afraid and flinching each time he takes the snap, he does not seems to protect the ball very well when being tackled, and just overall trying to force passes that end up being picked off. In reality OSU should have won that game by at least 8 or more if they make easy field goals, and just kick the extra point instead of going for 2. Unless Johnson starts believing in himself and having confidence in his playing calling and passing, then the BYU game won't be close.
Average? | 9:39 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
This is not an "average" Utah team. This is an AWESOME team with an incredibly inconsistent quarterback. The defense was awesome the whole game. (yeah they gave up some yards through the air but OSU has a pretty sweet offense) The O-line gave adequate protection. The recievers were getting open. There were just maybe 3 offensive series in a row where Johnson just wasn't seeing the field. We were all just waiting for him to snap out of it and wondering if he even would. He did, and we won. But if he plays an entire game this Utah team is as good as any.
UTE FAN | 9:39 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I am disappointed with Ute fans that boo or discredit Brian Johnson. THe utes have won 14 of the last 15 games that Johnson has started. I am not defending his fumbles, but to get mad at johnson for taking time in the pocket and go through his reads is idiotic. Utah fans must just feel like every offense and quarterback should perform like Alex Smith and the 04 utes. OSU had a great secondary and it was a tough game. If Johnson will not fumble and have an occasional INT then we will be in good shape. Johnson is a good quarterback, not great, but good! Come on, stand up for the guy that brought us back to victory. Don't be lame and over emotional. Realize that the QB, WR, and the opposing Defense is doing a lot more than the fans can see in the stands.
Re: BcS Official | 9:40 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
You may be right with Utah's average play most of the game or games this season. However, they pull through in the clutch when they need to and get wins and that is all that matters. I don't think it was luck that they drove the ball down the field like they did in the last two minutes.

As for a questionable call that is debatable and every game has them. You know they just could have stopped them on the next play or the next drive.
utah_man18 | 10:15 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
First of all, that was clearly pass interference on the 2 pt try- much less questionable than the celebration penalty on Locker. Secondly, I have to echo the remarks of "UTE FAN;" we have no reason to boo our quarterback. How in the world would booing a guy help him out of a slump? I mean, we know what he's capable of, so let's support him and help him play to his potential. GO UTES!

If Oregon wins the PAC 10 they go to a BCS bowl. Why is this hard to understand.

Hero of Canton

If Utah makes 1 or 2 more plays they win by even more points. Statements like that are ridiculous.

BcS Official

He probably hasn't left town yet, at least not UT. My guess is that he will be in Logan tonight.

Re: BcS Official

Big difference between BYU's close win and Utah's close win. BYU dominated UW where OSU domintate UT.

Average?

I tend to agree with you. I think a consistent QB would make all the difference for UT this year. That and better play calling. They are pretty solid otherwise.

MT in MD | 10:26 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Congratulations, Utes! Good win for the conference and the program. Granted, being in MD and not being blessed with a cable package that includes Vs and theMtn, I don't get to see much MWC football, but from what I'm reading here and elsewhere, there are some concerns that the Utes need to address. I'm hoping they do. Johnson cannot keep throwing INTs every game, or they will be the cause of an unnecessary loss. It's great that the Utes have Sakoda--a great kicker is a tremendous asset--but it would be so much better not to have to rely on him.

Good luck, Utes, the rest of the way! Looking forward to 11-0 BYU and 11-0 Utah playing in November.

GO COUGS!
Long Time Cougar | 10:31 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I watched the 2nd half and was pulling for Utah to win. But unless I was missing something I wasn't that impressed with Johnson and Utah in general. They were lucky to pull it out in the end. I hope they usually play better than that. Go Utes...see you in the big matchup!
Utes Awesome | 10:51 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
This looks like a team of destiny. When it counted everyone on the Ute side stepped up. It was a great win. Each week brings the BCS a little closer.

For all the folks who remember the greatest Utah team of all time, keep it up. These players have great heart if not the skill of that team. They certainly do not dominate on the field, but they bring home W's.

"Big difference between BYU's close win and Utah's close win. BYU dominated UW where OSU domintate UT."

The scoreboard says otherwise.

Of course I failed to take into account the "BYU victory": He who has the most yards is the real winner.
BCS - No Way | 11:26 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
If only Utah could play Pac-10 teams all year, you would be an 8-4, or possibly 7-5 team. But alas, you get a free pass of playing in the always strong MWC and so with wins, at home, over unranked opponents, you storm the field. One aspect of showing you deserve to be in BCS consideration is to act like it. Storming the field after surviving a narrow loss to an unranked foe at home does not show you guys deserve to be there. You have to walk the walk and celebratory acts like that show you do not belong. Did Penn State storm the field after being Coastal Carolina? Did Georgia storm the field after beating Central Michigan? Nope.
Clarity... how bout some Reality | 11:33 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Clarity.. have you watched BYU/Utah games in the last 10 years? These are some of the most hotly contested games year in and year out. The last 2 have been on the last play of the game, a few years back it was Alex Smith 3-0 in a slugfest, then there were all the 34-31 games on last second field goals.

Yes the Cougs are very, very good, but in the Holy War both teams leave it all out on the field. 42-12... give the U some credit and give the rest of us a break. Time to come back down to reality.
Utah's | 11:34 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
...worst game of the season, yes they rallied and won, and played great the last couple of minutes, but they never should have been in that situation.

Johnson scores almost as many points for the other team as he does on offense with his great timing and ability for turnovers. He still looks like a scared freshman out there sometimes, I hope he gets his act together.

Utah's Defense is the only thing that kept them in the game, they deserve the credit, not the offense despite their late rally.
Re: Clarity | 11:52 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
"BYU 42 - Utah 12 (3 Sakoda Field Goals)"

Oh the education of a BYU grad. 3 Sakoda Field goals does not equal 12 points. How do they get the other 3?
RE: Clarity | 12:15 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Perhaps you need to go back to 3rd grade and realize that 3 field goals would be 9 points. I'm not sure what brand of football you watch, but with 3 field goals adding to the total, there is no possible way for a team to score 12. Great job.

Either way your prediction is wrong. Go Utes!
Anonymous | 12:16 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I laughed pretty hard when I read the comment about the "Y" education and that we don't have math skills because they still would have won just the margin of victory would have been smaller.
Are you kidding me?!! Do you honestly think if the Utes didn't tie the game with a little over 1 minute left the rest of the game would have played out exactly the same!!? Oregon St. would have got the ball back and ran out the clock and even if Utah does get the ball back, they would have 0 timeouts and maybe 40 seconds left. Some of you fans really need to get a clue.
Michael | 12:16 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
BYU fans that critique this win make themselves look like idiots. This may come as a surprise to most Y fans but not every game is about BYU. Jelousy is an ugly emotion, there is enough spot light to share.
Good Team | 12:17 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
It was awesome the way the defense kept the Utes in this game. Special teams played a huge roll as well. The offense did what it had to do to put this TEAM in a position to win. The offense needs to step it up and give the rest of the TEAM a little more of a cushion, otherwise......it will be a cold and lonely winter contemplating what could have (and should have) been.
Re: BCS - No Way | 12:41 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
You obviously did not watch the game or you would have understood why they stormed the field. The game was full of emtion and ups and downs. You don't have to beat a ranked team to storm the field. That is the fun thing about college football. What an exciting finish!
Hilarious | 12:43 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Utah Fan and BYU fan you both have nothing to talk about. BYU has not played anybody worth a darn this year they have not proven anything if you call beating up UCLA and Wymoming impressive, probably think that 6th graders beating up Kindergartners is a great fight.
Utah granted have beat more quaility opponents but have done it barely and last second leaving you to assume that the wouldn't be able to win the big one.
Does anybody really think that the BCS really means anything it is a cartel that a few conferences have set up to glorify their crappy conferences. Utah and BYU could play in any "BCS" conference and earn a bid. ACC no undefeated record, Big East 1 undefeated record, Big 10 only 2, PAC10 none.
So | 1:00 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Utah and BYU are both a little over rated BYU has not had a legitimate win, no BYU fan you can not claim that UCLA and Wyoming are good teams (I won't even mention Washington). Utah you can not glorify your wins either granted you have played more quaility teams you have not beat them resoundly. leaving us to assume you can not win the big one.

RE: Classless 6:34am | 1:19 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
You are a BYU fan masquerading as a Ute. Talk about classless! "our fans profess to be religious" or "our players start playing a little too dirty;" get over yourself. You are the type that gives BYU the bad reputation it has inside AND outside the good state of Utah.
Rated like everyone else | 1:34 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
BYU and Utah deserve to be rated as much as any other team. No conference has shown themselves to be any better than the MWC. BYU shut out 2 teams in a row. Very hard to do unless you are very deep at offence, defense and special teams. Enjoy it. I am; I hope we have a great rivalry game in late November.
Dear BCS - No Way | 1:45 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I'm assuming you are a byu fan, and all I have to say is same to ya, If byu played in the Pac-10 they would probably have a similar record.

And, I knew last night that some byu fan would be saying "act like you have been there"... storming the field had nothing to do with beating osu... it had to do with HOW it happened... you weren't there... it was awesome... and if I dare say "when you live right on and off the field magic happens"... GO UTES!!!!

lost in DC | 1:54 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Clarity, I see you've been told a few times that 3 field goals only comes to 9, not 12, but since you said 12 first, I'm sure no amount of discussion will change your small mind.

I didn't say they wouldn't have a chance, I said it was corrupt. They could still win the PAC 1 as they have only 1 PAC 1 loss, but that still doesn't make it just.
Re: Classless! | 1:58 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Cougar fans should quit posing as Ute fans. Go Aggies tonight. Enough of this PC talk about two unbeaten teams...I wouldn't care less if BYU finished 4-8 on the year. Not going to happen, but why pretend like I want BYU to win. I don't.

BCS dilema | 2:51 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Could an undefeated BCS conference team be left out of the BCS bowls?

Penn State and Northwestern are both 5-0.

The Big Ten doesn't have a conference championship game.

Penn State and Northwestern DO NOT play each other.

It's possible that both could be undefeated at season's end.

If the Big 12 and SEC champs go to the NC game, the Rose Bowl will take the Big Ten champion, who would be...?

Penn State is currently ranked 6th in the Coaches and Harris polls.

Northwestern is unranked in either poll.
BWhiners | 3:03 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Oh look, it's a bunch of BYU fans trying to get attention for their overrated team. Thanks for all of your biased interpretations of what happened last night. Now go home and pray that your lucky team can get by Utah State tonight.
Re: Classless! | 3:04 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Please explain:

1) What EXACTLY you saw that you deemed "dirty" by the Utah players
2)Why you believe that a coach exercising the officials is wrong

Comments like that require specific details and an explanation. You will soon find that the world outside of your BYU campus demands facts, not unsupported opinion.
Re: Anonymous | 3:11 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I love the way BYU fans make up their own ending to a football game. When you stop and think about it though, I suppose they are entitled...after all, they live in Disneyland!
Observation | 3:22 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Here are some facts:

1) UCLA and Washington have a COMBINED total of 1 win
2) Utah is 6 - 0
3) BYU is 4 - 0

These are facts and they are indisputable!
Re: BCS dilema | 3:27 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Irrelevant. Especially at this point in the season and in this market. No one cares. And there is way too much football to be played this season. History has shown that there's only one year where there were too many unbeatens...and it wasn't in the same conference either.
