the ball was uncatcvhable because the reciever was being pushed past the ball. that is why the flag was thrown, and he never looked for the ball. if he turns his head around the flag stays in the pocket. oh, and the ref that was supposedly "right there" didn't throw the flag because it isn't his call. he was looking other places for holding. the field judge who threw the flag is the one who is supposed to watch for that. hummm, maybe some of you should learn how to ref before you question who throws the flag. just because you are standing somewhere doesn;t mean you are looking at what is happening ten yards to your right. and the one who threw the flag was looking right down the end line where the play took place.

I snuck a peek at today's practice up on the hill. Guess what the top priority is going into next week's game against the Cowboys? Yep, onside kicks! You never know when that will come in handy as a program reputation builder and definer of coaching class in a Wyoming game!!!

I'd forget OSU and start thinking about Wyoming at this point. You think they won't be up for you? They're out to get you after last year's display of fireside sportsmanship!
Amazing Lanius | 2:01 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Tearing down your own team to make your rival look bad. That's a weird world you live in.

BYU already has a national reputation and respect within the college football world. The Cougars don't need the respect of a minority of sophomoric, whiney, jealous, Utah fans in order to validate BYU's accomplishments.

The same goes for BYU fans who try to minimize Utah's 2004 season.

It's a sign of insecurity when fans have to resort to tearing down their opponents' accomplishments in order to feel better about themselves.

Let's look at the PI call:

The receiver was doing a crossing route along the back of the endzone and the DB was chasing him. The ball was thrown BEHIND THE DB!! So when the receiver stopped to go get it HE RAN INTO the DB and gained a PI call for it. If anything it should have been Offensive PI. I side with neither Utah or BYU, and as an unbiased observer anyone who would say that was definately PI has no clue what PI is! Utah got lucky that their Quarterback was horrible enough to throw the ball that far behind his receiver.

On another note, anyone who says their team is good (Utah) becuase they beat a team (OSU) that happened to beat a big team (USC) doesn't know much abut college football. Any college football fan can see that those two teams that played yesterday were TERRIBLE. I felt like I was watching a high school game.

Another point: I've never seen a ranked team rush the field after they barely beat an unranked team. That was comical to watch. You lost all credibility on that alone.

WELL EXCUSE ME! I did NOT know YOU COULD SEE THE FUTURE OR WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN THE PAST UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES!
WHY are you wasting your time posting to silly blogs when you could be in VEGAS or WINDOVER with a gift like that?
why do you watch any sports at all when you not only know who will win but how finished games would have come out if any play had gone differently?

PLESE tell us so we can get on with our lives! give us the score of the big game on Nov 22nd and will either side reach that day still undefeated?
AND PLEASE have mercy on us lowly mortals--when are you coming the Second time?
we'd all like to know that!

Great win Utah!!!! Way to go MWC. How exciting this is for everyone with both teams playing so well. Keep up the good work what a game that would be if both teams can just keep it going. For either team to get in they need the other one to be successful and so far both teams are living up to their part of the bargain

I think the fans that booed BJ left before the last two minutes, and I would hardly call one win over wyo a third year of conference domination, according to the standings, Utah is on top! Anyway, I'll stop wasting my time talkin to a zoob. That game was awesome, and it showed that this team does know how to win. While it gave me a few heart attacks, it was awesome to watch them respond like that. Now we need to figure out how to transfer that minute and a half offense to the whole game! Go Utes!

Cali fan-

Typical west coast snobbery without substance. If you've watched enough college football, you'd have seen plenty of times when people rush the field in close come from 8 points behind in 2 minutes victory.

Get a life and stop pretending.

Who died and appointed you the "credibility judge"?

Oh, wait. No one did.

You just want to find an excuse to downplay Utah's victory because the Pac-10 is not very good this year.

Here's some "credible" figures for you:

6-1. (MWC vs. Pac 10)

As a cougar fan, I've never been so happy to see the Utes win. Brian Johnson looked tenative and indecisive all night, until the last two drives of course. Props to the Utah defense for stopping the Oregon rushing attack that torched USC. Mad props to Louis for being clutch under that kind of pressure.

Most of all, I'm just happy that my dream of an Undefeated BYU and Utah meeting at the end of the season is still alive. It's the only way BYU will have a shot at the national title game.

2. BYU fans rush the field last year after beating a unranked U of U team in Provo..

Did you not see OSU beat #1 USC last week. BYU fans a acting like Utah beat UCLA or something. And to whoever said its sad that Utah had to win with their kicker dosent know the game of football. Utah had to drive down the to get into position to kick that field goal. there is a reason that you have a kicker you know. Im not a Ute or Cougar fan, but I am sick of how arrogant BYU fans are. The teams they have played have what like 3 wins combined. Utah Beat Michigan, who beat #9 Wisconson and OSU who beat #1 USC and they beat UNLV who beat a ranked ASU, but BYU will also beat them. BYU fans need to stop thinking that every other team in the county is second rate compared to them, except the crapy teams they play, and they have exeptional talent. BYU has little shot at the NC the BCS would take a two loss winner of the SEC of Big 12 over them any day.

re SCAT | 2:28 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
so are you saying that half of Utah's wins are on last second field goals? I think he has kicked two in his career, and guess what, having a good kicker is more important than you seem to realize. Who scores more points for teams throughout their careers? Lots and lots of kickers!

Lanius | 2:41 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Actually, I have a high regard for the football tradition at the Y. (in my younger more sophomoric years you could almost call me a fan). Also, I think Coach Mendenhall is a fantastic coach. It is the large number of moronic, tunnel visioned Cougar fans that I find quite entertaining. (in a not so good way).

If by "tore down" you mean state a fact, guilty as charged. The fact remains the best victories fot the Y have been the two Utah wins.

Could you, as a Cougar fan, be feeling insecure or is the light at the end becoming faint.

Stay away from the light - no quest should end there!

Utah has a great defense, and a really good kicker, but I didn't see anything from Utah's offense that should cause any Cougar faithful to be concerned.

King Louie FG's aren't going to cut it vs Collie/Unga/Pitta/Reed/Fui TD's.

I'm a Ute fan. I'm not going to read all 400+ comments to this article but one thing is certain.

BYU fans are obsessed with Utah football like Utah fans are obsessed with BYU football. For years, all I hear is that Utah is obsessed with BYU. Why can't BYU fans admit this obsession goes both ways?

Lets call it a tie | 3:08 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Obviously there is a lot of dispute about whether that flag should have been thrown, why does this sound so familiar? Oh yeah a controversial call went against BYU a couple of games ago and there was much dispute over whether BYU deserved the win. Both teams were ranked about 15th when they played, both won by only one point and, for both it wasn't without the help of a ref, so if Utah doesn't drop at least 3 spots like BYU did it will be ridiculous. It seems pointless on this website to agrue who is better- after all- everyone is biased. Lets just say they are at least even- they both have a game they can feel accomplished about their "heart" and "effort", but they should both still be embarrassed by their near wins to teams they should have killed. (Granted BYU was expected to win by much more, and although Utah was expected to win by not as much- the way OSU played Utah should have slaughtered them for all their talk about how great they are!)
Old Ute | 3:09 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
1) There was no bailout. For all you cougar mathematical geniuses: even if the 2 point conversion had failed or no penatly had been called, the score would have been 28 to 26 Beavers. The field goal would still have given the Utes 29 points. Even with the math they teach at byu, 29 points beats 28 points. The penalty played no role in the outcome.

2) I would say that another win over a PAC 10 team (one that is decidedly better than the losers BYU has played), beoming the first team in the country to become bowl eligible, to beat the team that knocked off USC and the dramatic nature of the win, are enough reasons to rush the field. Maybe when byu fans stop singing about popcorn long enough to beat somebody that isn't a pansy, they might want to rush thew field too!

Rush the Field | 3:10 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
BYU fans rushing the field tonight is possible...since there will be more BYU fans in Romney Stadium than there are USU fans! I doubt they'll rush the field though as the game will be decided long before a last second field goal so there won't be near the hype of RES last night...not to mention they'll all likely have left the game in the 3rd quarter, along with all of BYU's 1st and 2nd string.
longtime ute fan | 3:23 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
what utah man probably meant about byu actually winning now is there was a period of time known as the "Crowton era". that time most zoobie' had sent there byu gear to the Deseret industries. Now that Bronco has turned the program around the fans have "fully invested" their money in new blue and white gear. whats gonna happen after bronco moves on to a higher paying BCS school (ie any Pac-10 school that needs improvment) then they will be on a new "quest" for another coach. good luck. i just tell it like it is. i hope there both undefeated on nov 22. i'll be there. GO UTES!!
Old Ute #2 | 3:23 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008

RE: We beat a 2-3 team!! | 3:27 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Umm. If BYU has to come back from behind in 2 minutes to Win USU you bet they should. I doubt any Ute fan would have rushed the field if last nights game wasn't as emotionally charged as it was.
Hey Utah/BYU fans | 3:31 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Hope you both are prepared for the Crash of 2008. What is that? The loss (or two) that will be inflicted on each of your teams during the rest of the season. One (sometimes 2) team each year typically goes undefeated. The chances of your team being that one are minute.

The National Championship talk, especially for BYU fans, is ridiculous. Not going to happen as long as the BCS is around.

The last great team this state has seen was the 2004 Ute team. It did the exact same thing that BYU's 1984 team did (go undefeated), but due to the BCS, it had no chance of winning a NC (BTW, BYU didn't WIN a NC, it was VOTED the NC, big difference. To WIN a NC, you actually have to PLAY in an NC game, like the Ute BBall team did to win the 1944 NCAA championship). IF the BCS were around in 1984, BYU wouldn't have had a chance to win the NC either.
To: Longtime Ute Fan | 3:34 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Maybe when Bronco leaves for greener pastures BYU will give Kyle Whittingham another shot? Not likely though as BYU learned during the Gary Crowton years that integrity and class is much more important than onside kicks with 40 point leads...

We still thank you Utah for keeping Kyle in Salt Lake and letting us have our second choice...which as sometimes happens, turns out out be a far better option!
Others in the Nation Agree | 3:38 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
BYU fans are not the only ones that thought Utah failed to impress last night. Scott Van Pelt of ESPN said the team looked really sluggish. He gave them credit for the win but was resoundingly unimpressed.

Rushing the field | 3:44 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Admittedly, there are a large number of things that I do not understand about BYU fans but another one has shown up today.

I would like a BYU fan to tell me that the blocked extra point against the inept Washington team wouldn't have merited an equally jubilant celebration had the game been played at BYU.

Come on now...I DARE you to say it on this board!
BYU Fans | 3:45 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Get less objective and look less smart every post. these are the fans that stormed the field after the mighty win over a loser UCLA team in las Vegas last year. By the way it was the students that stormed the field and given the emotion and the way the game was won it was understandable. These are the fans of a team that has not won a game against a winning team this year. These are the fans of a team behind the Utes in every simulated BCS poll so far. I was right behind the so called controversial call and the reciever was clearly blocked from getting back to the ball. Lets have another cheer for the fans of Americas most hated team!!!
Re: Lets call it a tie | 3:47 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
The difference is the national media (along with Rival Utah fans) took issue with the celebration penalty. In this case, it's really just biased BYU fans trying to claim this pass interference call was "controversial." Now, for the most part, I respect BYU fans and their opinions, but if this PI call was really that controversial, where's the backlash from the national media or even the players/coaches on Oregon St.?
confused Cali fan | 3:58 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Why all the hostility about a bunch of kids rushing the field after an exciting game? I didn't know there were particular rules about not rushing onto the field- hey college football in Cali - mind your own business because no one here gives one hoot about your opinion on credibility - who cares what you think about our kids celebrating a big win last night.
Re Re Utah Resident | 4:00 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
No code, Re: Utah Resident. Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida and came here to Salt Lake City from Oakland, California and live across the street from the west parking lot of Rice Eccles stadium. I'm disappointed in the Ute team I watched in person in the stadium last night as a season ticket holder. Actually, more embarassed than disappointed - I watched it on TV last night on DIVO after I left the stadium - they looked even worse on TV.
Wyo native | 4:00 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I just hope there is a conference talk on sportsmanship for all you BYU and Utah Fans. Of course there are those that are gracious about the win, but holy cow it's like listening to a bunch of middle school girls when you read these posts. Grow up and be respectful, honestly when all is said and done it's just a stupid game, but to me some people are treating it like a false idol. As a football fan of both schools i hope they both go into the final game undefeated, that way the match-up between two top ten teams by that point will look that much better to the BCS committee. In the end here, just think before you post.
MWC Fan | 4:06 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
All in all, I have no idea why BYU fans are trying to discredit the Utes' win to a team who took down USC. BYU has still yet to be tested like the Utes' were last night. Play a non-conference team who as at least a .50 winning percentage this year and maybe, just maybe, I'll give you cougs some credit. But thanks for cheering the Utes on, jerks. It takes a great team to come out of that kind of situation with a win. And ease up on your pride cougs. I love ya to death, but shut your pie holes about shut-outs and "expecting" to win the conference this year. You have 8 ball games left to play. And please, once again, do not chant "BCS!".
re:longtime ute fan | 4:09 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Honestly, as an observer, I think that Bronco will be around for awhile, and even if he leaves, the way he has modified and re-established the Lavell years type program, there will be a smooth transition.

I think back to the Fassel Era that McBride turned around, and how Utah ran him out. I think about how Urban left after two years. I saw Kyle offered both jobs, and he took the Utah money. Money and his father were important to Kyle.

Kyle's father is no longer keeping Kyle at Utah, he coached in the NFL, and if Kyle gets the shot, I think he will be out of Utah this year, in the NFL like DAD.

BYU has a long list of coaches craving the storied program.

I think Utah has a much shorter, less qualified list.

When Kyle leaves after this year, who is there to take over at Utah?

I think the Utes see this, and see this year as very important, because after this year, it's going to take alot to rebuild Utah's decimated team and coaching staff.

Good luck November 22, I really wish you Utes the best, but if Utah wins, Kyle is gone.

I was one of the fans that rushed the field and I wanted to congratulate Louie Sakoda and put him up on my shoulders, I was that excited. It felt right after such a comeback. It was an AMAZING comeback against a PAC-10 team who took down USC last week!!! Why wouldn't I rush the field? That's the question the question... And seeing all the football players enjoying every minute of it with us was something special. I apologize for being a young, dumb and impulsive 23 year old college student who just supports my team. But hell, WHAT A GAME!!! Go UTES!!!
Buy a Vowel | 4:27 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I propose these nitwits as contestants for "Ute Honk Wheel of Fortune":

Re: Ranked: Dude, are you serious? Players CAN rush the field when they win. FANS should not. Do you not understand why there's a wall around the field of play. Fans stay in the stands. Players are on the field. Bad things happen when you mix the two.

To prove my point, let's now welcome "Mr. Wonderful" who was kind enough to refer to the time some BYU fool ran on the field and got pummeled by a Ute yell-leader. As added evidence, I would like to refer to the game in Salt Lake where a Cougar linebacker went into the stands and beat the tar out of some drunken Ute fan who thought he was man enough to push around the BYU player's mom and dad.

There was a game back East a couple years ago where a fan was actually killed in the melee when some morons pulled down a goal post and it landed on them. Only morons rush the field from the stands -- whether they be Cougars, Utes or Runnin' Rebels. Grow up, people.

I am with you.
Rather have them (the kids) get excited about winning a good football team than getting high on drugs.

I moved out of state since 1993 so I don't know the new RES. Wonder if what it will look like on Nov 22 when the field is filled with people wearing red stomping on after the game.

Any who will be there, please take pictures...
