Officer escorts Hughes away from Capitol after argument
6 comments | Read story
Hughes shouldn't have been the one escorted off of Capitol Hill instead it should have been the Chief of Staff if any altercation occurred. I do believe Hughes is guilty of the ethics violations but that does not give a Chief of Staff authority to remove or prevent him from entering the Capitol.
The Sergeant at Arms, acting under the authority of the Speaker, has the authority to remove disruptive individuals including Representatives and Senators but this article seems to imply that the UHP officer was acting on his own or at the request of the Chief of Staff. If this officer escorted Hughes from the Capitol without first speaking with the Sergeant at Arms or a member of his staff to determine which of the two they wanted removed than the officer should be reprimanded.
He doesn't get to make the judgment call. Hughes has a right to be there but Bleak doesn't because he has no elected duties.
I think he was escorted off so that he did not get arrested.
Anyone else would still be been in the clinker.
