This year, voters want substance, Zogby says. They want to tackle health care, pensions, the environment, energy and immigration. Negative ads could outright backfire. Polarizing issues like abortion, and gay marriage could take a back seat.

Why does Utah have to be the state to waste money on a court fight? The role of the judiciary is to interpret and compare statutes to the principles of the Constitution. The Supreme Court has already addressed this issue. MANY MANY MANY times over. This isn't some unexplored area of the law. This issue has been dealt with.

There are other, more constitutional ways to decrease the number of abortions in Utah. One would be to teach high school kids comprehensive sex education instead of "abstinence only." Abstinence is what Bristol Palen learned, and it's what every pregnant teenage girl in Utah learned. If we're gonna spend money to decrease abortions, lets spend it by empowering our youth.

There are plenty of things we could do with the millions of dollars this lawsuit will take. And most of them will decrease abortions much more effectively than filing a lawsuit that will certainly fail.

This is a moral issue that is not up to the law to decide. It is up to the individual. I certainly hope that the legislators plan to outlaw abortion includes making the morning after pill accessible over the counter, making adoption easier and cheaper, and improving sexual education in schools. If not, I fear that back alley abortions will again be performed and babies in dumpsters will be a common occurrence.

Spend the money on educating about birth control and the hazards of abortion not abolishing abortion.
To make abortion illigal is only to push it to some other state. Everyone has free agency, don't take that away and that is what this bill does. No one makes us do anything, we all have to make choices.
The first choice should be abstinence, not just telling your sons and daughters to abstain but indepth teaching them why it is important and the consequences. This is a matter that begins in the home with hard talking about the subject by parents or who ever the responsible adult is.
Though Abstinence is the the preferred method there are others and there should be education programs for both parents as well as teenagers in these teaching matters.
No one wants to see the coat hanger and back alley become the abortion means again and that is exactly be what this bill would do.

I agree that youth and and adults alike should be taught about proper methods to prevent pregnancy. At the same time, since a lot of people fail to take responsibility to prevent pregnancy, something else should be done to prevent abortions that are done based on a woman's desire to end a pregnancy for convenience purposes only. If the persons involved failed to be responsible to try and prevent a pregnancy, they should be held accountable for their actions and give the baby up for adoption when born. There are plenty of people who would willingly adopt the baby. Think about the pain that these poor little innocent babies go through when a mother decides to have an abortion. I agree with all aspects of this bill and think it should be combined with proper teaching in the home, as well as teaching in our schools (since some kids aren't taught anything at home).

In addition, high school students should be required to take some sort of parenting class. A large portion of the population will produce offspring so it would be best if they could have some sort of education about how to be a better parent.

The Supreme Court has spoken again and again on the issue. Until the U.S. Congress does something, it is a waste of States' money to continue to pass legislation that will be struck down after a lot of money is spent. Why doesn't our State Legislature pass a strongly worded resolution to be passed on the Congress? It would be free and would have the same effect.

Is it "people want a wholesale stop on abortion" or "people want a stop on wholesale abortion"?

I know, not that big of a difference, but still, a difference.

It's hard to legislate people into responsibility, so I'm behind educating kids about how to avoid an unwanted pregnancy. Then, more emphasis on adoption, please.

Anyway, some people seem to like to use taxpayers' money for their campaigns.

What does the non-sectarian legislature expect to gain by sctimoiously spending Utah money on these social issues, like gay marriage or birth control.
Who ordained Utah to carry the banner for the rest of the Nation. Let Alaska take up the cause.

It's absurd to use the excuse that this bill would lead to back alley abortions. I believe Utahns do want a bill to prohibit abortions with the noted exceptions.
