I know you want this $33 Million - but after visiting the zoo - do you really NEED $33 Million? Not in this economy. The zoo already gets state and county funding - they should tighten the belt like everyone else.
Amen to Sorry Zoo. If you can't make it on the taxpayer money you already receive, something is wrong.
Hello Sheri Swensen, there's a big old place across the street from the zoo that would work, This Is The Place Heritage Park? Duh? What about one of the Research Park Marriott Hotels ballrooms?? Or the conference room at the Huntsman Headquarters (oh wait, Johnny's running for governor, confilct!) What about one of the WARD houses behind the zoo? Or one of the many businesses in Research Park??? I don't know where you've looked but I highly doubt you guys have exhausted all possibilities. Holding at the zoo while they are asking for bond money is a HUGE conflic of interest. Find some place else, please!! Or make sure the Zoo can not have ANY campaign signs, info etc anywhere on zoo grounds or leading to the zoo.
what better place to make an informed decision about the zoo than at the zoo! conflict of interest? seriously? the last school bond i voted on was at a school...i should contest the results perhaps
When was the last time you were at Hogle Zoo?? If you go there it's quite clear (and has been for many years) that the majority of the habitats need (yes NEED) improvement. This is something most everyone seems to agree on.
All the animals deserve the best habitat that can be given them in the space provided (they should've moved to one of the 100+ acre sites that were debated about several years ago, but oh well).
The $33 million you're talking about is actually only half of what they were originally seeking and need. Until the council voted on this the figure was $65 million. So once the $33 million is used up the zoo will be asking for more again down the road in order to finish the project.
I'd like to see them expand the zoo across the street, sharing the property with This is the Place Monument (making it and the Zoo a joint attraction). They used to be talking about doing this, I'd like to know what's become of it.
Hogle has made some great strides recently with the new Elephant habitat & Asian Highlands... let's help them keep it up, vote YES.
The zoo isn't in danger of going under/going bankrupt. The issue isn't about keeping the zoo running. The money being asked for is to further their master plan for the long over due improvements to the animal habitats, improving the quality of life for the animals in their care. There's just no way you/they can do this on what they get from the zap taxes each year. They need an extra influx of money, a very large amount.
And Hogle Zoo being one of the states top tourist attractions is why the state should be and is involved in helping.
So lets get out and vote everyone, lets keep to our voting history of the past and give the zoo what it's asking for. Vote YES on this "renew the Zoo" bond in November.
As for the issue about two precincts voting at the zoo, I don't see the big deal. Just as "Seriously?" pointed out in the feedback here, voting has always taken place in public schools for decades... but nobody ever cries foul about voting for school related issues at those school polling places do they? So why the worry now?
