RE:Re;Utah Fan | 2:31 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
I agree with you about the weber QB, he's the real deal. A couple of things I want to nit pick about though...Mac wont be around a couple of more years, he is expected to retire after this year, Wber St. is not division 2, there are part of division 1 Football championship subdivision (formerly D1-AA). Further I expect weber will be a contender for the FCS championship this year and should make a nice run in the playoffs.
Weber St. | 2:34 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Anyone who talks trash on Weber State does not follow football, or know anything about it.
Weber State is a good team, I am not saying that they should have beat Utah, Utah is clearly better, but I am sick of people talking about Weber State without even looking at the fact that their QB would start for more every school in the MWC except for BYU and Utah.
He is good.
impressed with weber | 2:37 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
I am a utah season ticket holder and I have to admit i was impressed with the weber state football team. The stadium and the utah football team was pretty flat at the beginning of the game but the wildcats came out fighting hard and they didnt give up the whole game, they were clealy outmatched but werent intimidated. WSU's offense, particularly the passing game, is as good or better than 1/4 of the MWC. The QB was accurate, elusive, and decisive. The RB ran hard and was always north/south.

Johnson would've been sacked a few times in that Weber St. game if he'd been facing a typical Div. I defense. He's still holding onto the ball too long in the pocket. Either get out of the pocket or get rid of the ball. Weber State's QB, on the other hand, showed much better awareness and completed some passes for big gains after scrambling.

Kyle did the smart thing by pulling his starters given the short week. And you can't criticize McBride for leaving his starters in. Simply put, you can NEVER criticize the coach of the team that's losing for leaving his starters in. Is he supposed to just give up?

I wouldn't bet a cent on this game Thursday either way. I hope the Ute defense comes to play from the opening kick, and not only after they give up that first touchdown.
Re: good prep | 2:53 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
I liked your comments and agree that the Utes have a distinct advantage playing at home. I also share your concerns about turnovers. BJ has been inconsistent in his ability to hang on to the football. Overall, the offense needs to improve.

All of your points were legit. However I would counsel you to look up the meaning of the word "notorious" in the future.
Weber Is Not Good | 3:08 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
I love how the Utes are justifying their team's subpar effort Saturday night by saying "I was impressed with Weber. They are a better than anyone will give them credit for." What a load...If BYU were to say the same about Northern Iowa, Utes would be the first to deride such comments. Just remember that Northern Iowa is ranked in the top 10 of the FCS Coaches Poll and Weber State is nowhere near the top 25.
Scheduling | 3:07 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
How is it that we're still bickering over SOS?
1st - Teams are scheduled years in advance, all you can do it go out and play. Unfortunately, the pollsters put stock into SOS, but fans shouldn't. A win is a win. UNLV had some good wins, then got blasted over the weekend by a supposed inferior team. Hello, does anyone really think USC was nervous this week? Doubt it and they got smacked in the face. Their lack of prep blew up in their faces.
2nd - SOS is going to go up and down all season. Going into the game, UCLA was a tough team. They've rolled over and shown their colors and UW is what it is. MIchigan is a dog that got a good win this week that helps Utah, but Wisc lost which then diminshes the SOS of UNLV and by proxy Utah's schedule. Its up and down all season and as is true with college football, all that really matters is wins and the quality of those wins. BYU shutting out UCLA and WYO gives better visibility than a close win at home over WSU.
Beavers Rep | 3:14 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Hey Ute fans..Beaver Fan here looking fwd to a good game Thursday.

It looks like you have improved a lot from last year.so I expect the game to be a lot closer than the 24-7 win in Corvallis last year.

Ultimately I think whichever defense plays the best will win this one. The one thing decidedly in our favor is that we have a good secondary and play the pass well.

Our kicking game is a mess though and it could cost us in what should be a close game.
Re: LIttle Bro Where Art Thou | 3:14 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
You come to Utah to tell them how to "set the stage before the big run?" Aren't the "big brothers" up north just following the formula set forth by Utah in 2003 and 2004???? Hey, keep coming back for advice. You may have STARTED the year in the top 20, but we've ALREADY done the BCS thing....so keep coming back if you want advice on how to "set the stage".

Also, I've noticed a lot of TDS fans cheering on the Utes so that your "resume" will look better. I figure the reason there is all the cheering is because, besides Utah, there is NOTHING to make your resume look better than a recent college grad with nothing more on his resume than Assistant Manager at Taco Bell. TDS better hope Utah is undefeated and top 10, because those great UCLA and WASH wins are looking worse and worse every week while Utah's MICH and OSU wins are looking better every week!!!!

National Respect is earned over time, not handed to you because your Big brother to the South has spent the years earning it.

Utes, simple challenge, just prove it on the field, over and over again. We "Old School" BYU fans have sat through the pre-Sheide era, through all the ups and down, and you finally get a seat at the table, and demand the head seat.

It ain't gonna happen.

You have a shot at something this year... Just do it.

re:Duckman | 8:13 a.m. | 3:29 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
You left out Michigan's come from behind win over Miami Ohio, and loss to Notre Dame.

Rodriguez is a heck of a coach, and has a better team now than when Utah played them. I'd be interested to see the score if Utah gets them in a Bowl game at the end of the year.

They would have tied you with the missed two-point conversion.

That was the game Kyle was preaching "One loss does not a season make".

Utah consistently wants to have it's cake, and eat it too.

Let the season play out, but for heaven's sake, stop it with the circular "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Ute Logic".

Is it any wonder kids have no ability to use logic when this tripe continues to come from the U of U's fanbase?
TrojanOne | 3:31 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
OSU was lucky. Their special teams kicking was very poor, yet the ball bounced to the 10 every time. Their kickoff team is below average, can't kick it beyond the 10 yard line. They have no extra point nor field goal kicker. Their best WR is out (Sammy), and he is a superb downfield blocker, and their only good receiver. QB can't throw ball accurately beyond 15 yards. If you stop the run, which should be easy...Quiz will be hurting...it will be a walk in the park for the Utes!!
RE: Weber Is Not Good | 3:30 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
I agree with most of what you said, but you blew your argument out of the way when you went on to brag about BYU's 2A opponent.
Please UTES, stop defending Weber and saying how good they looked. It was simply a win to pad the stats. Nothing more.
Also, BYU fans, the game was not as close as the score implied. Yes, it is a little embarassing that we let them score 21 on us, but it was not really a terrible performance either. The Utes simply need to move on and look at OSU as most of us are.
Congrats to BYU for getting where you are in the polls, but you have hit your ceiling until you play TCU, possibly even for the year.
RE: weber is not good | 3:32 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
BYU beat a top 25 team in division 1AA. Hey nice job guys you won a game you were supposed too, just like Utah did. The score has nothing to do with the game. 14 points in garbage (last 5 minutes) time means nothing. To division 1A schools, no weber is not good, neither is northern iowa, that is the reason they are division 1AA. Is weber more talented that most give them credit, YES. Watch all spectrums of football before you say otherwise. Man can i please talk to a BYU fan that Knows about football and not just about BYU football, i know there is one out there, just give me a legititment argument why BYU should be a national power. I promise i can tell you otherwise
re:Re: LIttle Bro Where Art Thou | 3:33 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
And we've done the NC thing.

It doesn't mean we don't come back for seconds.

If your defense could have covered Harline, or Collie on 4th and 18, you would probably be ranked higher than BYU right now. How do you not cover Austin Collie? How do you let Unga run in untouched from the 10 when you know BYU has an injured kicker?

BYU's ranking and Utah's ranking this year rests squarely on the shoulders of your defense.

Accept some personal responsibility, rather than giving excuses.

Cowboy up and do it this year.

After the past two years, you really have to reason to whine like you do.

"NOTHING to make your resume look better than a recent college grad with nothing more on his resume than Assistant Manager at Taco Bell."

I doubt you have ever seen this, and I'm guessing it's just a childish remark meant to hurt anyone that likes BYU, but working at Taco Bell is honest work, and I don't disrespect anyone who puts in a honest day. Too bad you felt the need.

I do hope your rant helps you out of your "Case of the Mondays..."

With a win against OSU, Utah will move up
With a win against USU, BYU will move down
BYU will be jumped by some of the same teams that lost this weekend even if the Y continues to win. What the teams do after you beat them does matter and the Y does not fare well in that arena. The one thing the Y has in there favor is there shut out wins. None of this really matters though, it will be decided on the field and if both teams continue to win the victor Nov 22nd will be sitting pretty.
Re: Re: Weber Is Not Good | 3:57 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
It was not my intention to talk up Northern Iowa as a good opponent, even though I realize it may appear that way. I was simply trying to point out the irony in some Ute fans justifying the outcome against Weber State while those same fans ridiculed Cougar fans for attempting to qualify Northern Iowa as a decent opponent.
Re Little Brother Where Art Thou | 3:57 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Wow, just when I thought that Cougar fans couldn't get any more arrogant. Do you really believe you're God's gift to football? I really wish that BYU fans would stop the arrogant "we're the greatest football program of all time and even though the Utes have a better record than us in head to head match-ups we're still better". Wow, so when you decide to get over yourself and actually decide to pay attention to college football and the history of BYU football (I know it's hard, but BYU does have a history class, right?) then come and talk to Utah fans. Until then, you may want to go learn about dominance. It wasn't too long ago that Utah took 4 straight against you Cougs. And you may also remember the numbers 52-33-4. Do you know what that is? It's the record that UTAH leads in the series against BYU. I wouldn't feel too bad though, you'll catch up with us 19 years or so, if "the magic" continues. So, get the dominance right, and have a great day, little brother.

the same Cougar false pride because of the lofty ratings (subjective I might add) Nice record against teams with a combined 3 wins. Utahs schedule strength is rated 35 spots higher than BYU and the simulated BCS rankings out have Utah higher than BYU. Spout off Americas most hated school....it doesn't mean a thing it will come down to the last game of the season until then it is one opinion or the other and "my daddy can beat up your daddy"
Hey big brother... | 4:14 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Maybe you should do a little more homework before spouting your mouth. BYU started the year at 16 and 17. They had to beat the powerhouse UNI team before they moved to 15.

We all know the reason you are cheering for Utah this weekend is because you are hoping that after Nov 22, when "little brother" socks you in the mouth, you won't fall too far in the polls hanging on the small chance that the BCS people will give 2 non-BCS schools a bowl in the same year.
big brother | 4:42 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
the term big brother is used to refer to an older sibling. Look at the dates and you will see that University of Utah is older than BYU so everyone from BYU quit saying that BYU is the big brother to Utah cause they aren't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are a big brother to Utah State but not to Utah.
Re: Re: where art thou.... | 5:00 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
BYU's resume isn't like a recent college grad with nothing more than Assistant Manager at Taco Bell. I can't believe you would trash a team with such storied tradition like BYU....I mean...look above a few posts and see all of the accolades the University has to its name.

Come on....THE University of Northern Iowa, Washington, UCLA, Wyoming....and you're comparing that to Asstant Manager at Taco Bell???? Wow!!! That is pretty high praise. BYU's "resume" is more like a recent college grad with nothing more than experience as a Sales Associate at the local cell phone kiosk in the mall......oh, and the recent grad was also "associates" with Harline and Doak Walker winner Staley.....now that is some great experience....I'd hire him....to clean the bathrooms.

BYU's "resume" is non-existent this year. The only team with a winning record so far is the D1-AA team they played....congrats TDS for the top 10 ranking, despite playing absolutely NOBODY yet!!!!
Yada, Yada, Yada | 5:48 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
BYU had to beat powerhouse UNI to move up, and Utah had to beat powerhouse Weber to move up. Yada, Yada, Yada.

You Ute honks just don't get it. Strength of schedule isn't the be-all, end-all to where a team gets ranked. The polls work based on how voters perceive your team. Just because a team plays a tougher schedule, does not mean they will be higher ranked (even if the records are similar). If one team is destroying opponents by a higher margin than they were expected to win, and another team is beating mediocre -- yes, mediocre -- teams by less points than they were expected to and look sloppy offensively while doing it, then guess what -- the first team's victories are probably going to be perceived in a better light by pollsters.

Utah may very well have played a tougher schedule -- so far -- than BYU. It doesn't matter. Utah was punished early on for last year's transgressions.

That's how the system works. Deal.

And to the dude who talked about Utah's 4 straight wins ... well, I remember a stretch where BYU won 19 out of 21. That's what I call dominance.

If you get into a BCS game this year its not like any BCS team is gonna be happy so I don't see how the "having a bone begrundginly throw to us" is even relivant since thats the same way it would be with you. Secondly, UNR's only losses have been to Mizzou and Texas Tech, two highly-ranked teams. In four weeks, UNR will be 6-2. UNR is a decent team with a decent program and this was a rivalry game. They will be a factor in the WAC (i.e., ranked BSU and ranked FSU). You should check your stats before posting. BTW, it's 22 points, not 22 point. I just wanted to let know. Thanks.

Get over it!! You have played nobody yet this year and until you play TCU in a couple of weeks all of the stats you can throw out don't mean a thing.

SHUT UP for a change!!!
RE: Yada, Yada, Yada | 9:34 p.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Your comments were decent at first. The Utes have played a much harder schedule. Michigan (Utah's first victory) just defeated #9 Wisconsin; UNLV (Utah's second victory) defeated then-#15 Arizona State; and Air Force is 3-1, its only loss coming to the Utes.

On the other hand, BYU defeated I-AA Northern Iowa AT HOME (NIU is only 2-2 now), a very bad UCLA AT HOME (UCLA is currently 1-3); and, again AT HOME, an awful Wyoming team (2-3 with victories over lowly Ohio U. and North Dakota State).

Now the question is this: How will BYU do on the road against better competition? (USU doesn't count.) Also, it's always interesting to me how BYU fans can't leave the Utes' newspaper comments section alone.

But, since you started it, you talk about a stretch where BYU won 19 out of 21 games. You conveniently stop there. Let's go back further, like, where you left off. Previous to the 19 in 21 stretch for BYU, the University of Utah won 38 out of 44 against BYU (with 3 ties). That's not merely greater dominance, THAT'S A MASSACRE!!!!

And yes, GO UTES!!!!

Y fan: Our team is awesome! WE are the best team in the state and way better than the UTES (yeah, your REAL name becuse we don't say stupid things like "TDS")becuase we have better wins and we won a national championship.

U fan: I am appalled that a BYU fan would talk his team up, BYU fans are the most arrogant fans in the world.

Think about it.

Here's my take. I have never actually rooted for the U to win a game, but I desperately want them to kick OSU's trash!!! This season has helped me learn that when your conference wins it's OOC games, they actually do get national respect.

Ha, right on Wow.

I also agree with you on the conference getting more respect. Last night on ESPN all of the anchors agreed that they would put a 1 loss BYU in the National Championship before they would put a 1 loss USC, strictly because we play in a stronger conference.

For this reaso, I want the Utes to SMASH the Beavers. Seriously, I have never actually rooted for the Utes, but come Thursday I will be a Ute fan for a day! Let's show the PAC-10 that we OWN them!!! Especailly since CSU laid an egg on Saturday against Cal.

Sorry fellas, I gotta go with my gut on this one.

Beavers 35
Utes 21

They are pretty strong up front, and their offense is bruising. I watched both the USC game and the Penn State game, this team just woke up, and we are next in line.

Oh well, we will beat BYU this year, and head to the Vegas bowl (oh yay). Hey, that brings up a good point. That is a seriouse slap in our faces, the fact that if we win this conference our reward is the Vegas Bowl?!!? That is just deplorable!.

Here we come Utes!!!

The BCS computers love Utah. Four of the six are reporting their results right now. Sagarin's ELO Chess (his BCS ranking) has Utah 2nd behind Alabama. Colley has Utah 3rd. Massey has Utah 4th. Billingsley has Utah 17th.

I don't know if they will continue to like Utah, even if Utah goes undefeated. But for now, they love Utah.

Hey Guys:

I haven't done anything as formal as count posts, but it seems like most of the BYU fans are wishing us luck this week with the Beavers.

Thanks! Right back at you.

Hopefully on Friday, June Cleaver and all the sports prognasticators will say, "Hey, Utah, don't you think you were a little hard on the Beavers last night?"

Re: Overrated,

It really makes me chuckle to see Posters make a Comment, "my Team is better than your Team, because..." then as if to emphasize the point they identify a grammatical/spelling error by another opposing Poster.

In your case, you stated, "BTW, it's 22 points, not 22 point. I just wanted to let know. Thanks." If you are going to provide an English Lesson it is best if you don't undermine your credibility in the very next sentence. It did provide some humor though.

It is a great year to be a BYU/UTAH Fan! Let's enjoy the ride and see what happens on Nov 22. It should be very exciting if BOTH teams can live up to the expectations.

BKB

BTW - I will readily admit that UTAH dominated all those games that my Grandpa used to watch when he was attending BYU. When I was 12 and began paying attention to Football, this guy named Lavell Edwards became the Head Coach at BYU. My memories of the BYU - UTAH Rivalry are somewhat lopsided. So, I can understand that if you are 17 your perception of the Rivalry might be different.

It really has nothing to do with BYU fans talking up their team. I have nothing against that and I don't think Utah fans have anything against that. What we do have problems with is when BYU fans talk up their team and say how miserable Utah/Utah fans are and how much they hate us and how BYU can compete in the SEC and how they're going to win the NC and how they say Utah is just the little brother. That's when we call BYU fans arrogant. I have no problem with the real BYU fans who come on and say BYU is good and they're looking forward to the game against Utah and how Utah is good. And by the way, I hate all arrogant Utah fans too. There are some fans on both sides that actually think before typing
