Overcoming anxiety is inspirational. But does her "inspirational story" overshadow her nude pictures and open support for gay rights.
I don't think so.
Senator Hatch may have been blindsided by not knowing these things. That is somewhat excusable. What is NOT excusable, is his making excuses for her to remain on the program. Senator Hatch is a United States Senator.
Join me in contacting his office and demand an explanation. If you believe we have a right to hold our leader's accountable, please join me in demanding an explanation about this.
I can't imagine someone's speech being "uplifting" when they support pornagraphy and a lifestyle contrary to what the majority of Utahn's don't believe in. If her activities had been way back in her past, then I could understand. I am glad that Sen. Hatch stated that he wasn't aware of her past, but I wonder why he doesn't withdraw the invitation. What message does this send, that it's okay to do bad things if you some good things, as well? I wonder if attendance at this workshop will go down this year.
Why can't we just focus on the positive of those around us? Since when are we all judges in Isreal?
Hey "you're kidding" and "too bad"
Get off you judgemental high horse and get to work on your own life.
Place to start--"Judge not that ye be not judged".
RE: Youre Kidding Right?
RE: Its Too Bad
Possibly, this could be a learning experience for both of you. Its a shame about how you surmised that she couldnt have anything inspirational to say to women. But, obviously Senator Hatch disagrees with you. Possibly you should look beyond your family values bigotry and attend the conference and decide for yourself. You might pleasantly surprise yourself and change a stereotype at the same time.
Imagine [looking up in a spirit of hope] a world where different people from different backgrounds and with different values show respect and dignity for others. Now thats a value I wish to teach my familyrespect and dignity to all of Gods children.
Maybe her anxiety has to do with what she condones. why is she a role model? This is a slap in the face to all those good woman out there.
The conference isn't about gay rights or media nudity. If you choose, you can express malcontent with such issues as the law provides.
On the other hand, if Gibson's testomony of her fight with a dreadful, formidable mental disease, which illness subjects millions of victims to horrors beyond your naive, virgin, imagination, provides value-added insights to other's who suffer, or who care for those who suffer the same and she is willing to publically articulate that valuable insight, then so be it.
Get over your self-righteous, punitive mindset and try to realize that when persons do not identify with your egocentric perspectives, such dissagrement doesn't grant you privillege to demand their publuc denunciation, banishment and/or to censor their value-added contributions.
I am against institutionalizing public media nudity, same sex marriages, and same sex sexual relations, but I would be delighted in our pluralistic society to hear of Gibson's ordeal.
Nudity, same sex sexual relations, gay marriage and mental illness are not necessarily related issues. I hope Gibson delivers an uplifting talk, which cascades to help others deal with and overcome their suffering.
What is this world coming to? A porn star as a role model? An advocate for the perverted side of society giving an "uplifting speech" to a religious state?
This speaker cannot be a role model or give an "uplifting speech" to anyone. Do you want your daughter to hear what she has to say?
And for a Senator of the United States not knowing her full background is a total lie. Doesn't the government make a full background on people anymore, especially after 9/11???
I hope the comments in the Deseret News is not a valid reflection of its readership. If someone has something valuable to share, we should welcome them. "If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things".
No one on the planet lives a life completely without guile. By that standard, we couldn't listen to anyone speak on any topic. Don't be so judgemental and self-righteous.
It's a pity when we start the finger pointing, forgetting we have faults and weaknesses too. I guess Jesus was supporting adultery, when He permitted the woman to anoint Him with oil at the house of Simon, and how about the woman at the well of Samaria?
1. Orrin, maybe you need to check your speakers a little more carefully, or get help from someone who is a little more in touch with what's going on in the world.
2. Please tell me you aren't saying supporting gay rights is as great a wrong as posing nude for Playboy!?!
3. If Senator Hatch didn't invite any speakers who had ever said or done anything not in keeping with his, or his church's, standards, it would be a pretty boring and sparsely attended conference indeed.
More proof the Senator Hatch has lost touch with those he represents. There wasn't anyone else who has overcome depression and anxiety who's present isn't quite so colorful?
Is there one among us who has not made mistakes or has at one time believed in a cause that was contrary to the "norm".
Ms Gibson's speech will be on overcoming her anxiety disorders... nothing else. I am sure she will be a wonderful speaker and contribute to the overall success of the women's conference.
Shame on all of you who try so hard to find fault with others when you still have a mote in your own eye!
This is an example of why we need to revisit term limits for senators and representatives. I agree that Orrin Hatch is out of touch with those who put him in office. He's more involved with Washington than those in Utah whom he's supposed to represent.
This shows how much Sen. Hatch is out of touch. If he doesn't do any checking on the people he chooses to "endorse without endorsing" perhaps he doesn't read all the legislation he pushes through. He needs to be finished in Washington. Lets get him out of office. His time is WAY over.
We may be judgemental, but someone has to use common sense here. What a travesty.
Oh no, more chunks of sky are falling on our heads.
If you're not interested in her story and what she has to say, you don't need to listen or read about it.
On the other hand, you may learn something about people who don't have perfect lives like those here in Zion.
Wait -- Playboy or no, not the issue.
SHE'S A MORON.
Doesn't that matter? Truly, what are her qualifications to address a body of women gathered to discuss important issues of the day? None. Other than, of course: middling, stale, D-grade "fame."
Shouldn't we expect more from Mr. Hatch? Sadly, no, I guess not.
Someone on Orrin Hatch's staff should be fired. Someone should have researched her background. Research is what a U.S. senator's staff is supposed to do. I agree that once he learned of her past she should have been disinvited. I hope this will be what the Utah Republican Party state convention needs to finally get rid of our liberal Utah senator. He should lose his nickname as the "Conscience of the Senate". This is another example of being a politician and not a statesman. Orrin Hatch is no statesman. As others have stated this is a perfect example of the need for term limits.
Isn't there inspiring stories from people that are not actors or singers.
