Wonderful game but

why such a short story. This game pitted arguably the best two volleyball programs in the state for the past decade. It featured at least five to six Division I prospects. I heard that coaches from several colleges including UNLV and BYU were in attendance. Don't tell me its volleyball and that nobody cares because both sides of the bleachers were filled with screaming fans (students, parents, alumni, fellow teachers). It was a truly exciting event, especially for female athletics. The match, though a LP fan, was great, some of the best volleyball I've ever seen as a casual fan of the sport for many, many years.

I know on Friday night that the press will cover games with more ink between pretty bad football teams.

I think Amy is a very good writer and it's too bad not more space was given to one of the premier athletic games in any sport one will see in Utah this year.

Great playing young ladies from both sides!

PG Fan

That was an incredible match last night. The two best teams in the state I've seen so far. Big region win for Pleasant Grove, and winning two matches on Lone Peaks home court within the last 10 days. PG made great in game adjustments and dominated the 5 game.

PG keeps proving they are #1.

Go Vikings!!

I agree!

Great game to be at!!! Lone Peak and PG have incredible athletes on their teams and the matches between these two teams never disappoints.

"why such a short story. This game pitted arguably the best two volleyball programs in the state for the past decade" are you serious? the Brighton team from two years ago was by far the best team in the past decade. Ranked 8th nationally and proved it. But i was at the game! and it was awesome! PG did a great job. and so did Lone Peak. State will be interesting.

Re: Wonderful game but

I couldn't agree more. Last night we were treated to two of the premiere teams in the state, one of them being ranked in the top 35 nationally. The there are at least 6 if not more D1 prospects playing, with one that is already committed to Utah. I personally saw coaches from BYU, Utah State and Arizona State in attendance.

The crowd was loud and challenging each other all night in the way high school sports are meant to be. This game had a lot on the line for both teams with first place in region and the bragging rights on the line. The energy could be felt in the gym like it was a state tournament game.

I think we could give a little more coverage for these girls who give as much time, effort and dedication to their sport as any other athlete. Football will always be king, but on a day when no football was played could we not do better?

Re: Anonymous

You miss the point of the comments. This isn't about what school is better than the other. Plug Brighton in on either side of the equation last night (we all know they are and have been good for a long time), and the argument is still the same. Its about coverage of girls volleyball at this high level, it deserves more than a quick summary.

Re: Anonymous

Brighton did have a good team in 2006 and was ranked 9th nationally. When PG won the state championship in 2005, they were ranked 7th nationally! Lone Peak could possible have been before that if they would have traveled outside of Utah.

Nice job ladies! We have incredible talent in Utah!!

Wonderful Game But (Redux)

I think overall PG and LP have had the best programs in the larger schools this decade. The Brighton team was one of the best certainly but I think those two programs overall have been the top dogs for the decade...

i did take that in the wrong way. I definitely think if a game is supposed to get a big article it deserves to be that game. i was there. and it was an awesome game. LP and PG have the most consistent volleyball programs in the state for sure. and by the time state comes, there might be some other teams in the running. so we will see.

ANOTH ANON

If you think the coverage of girls volleyball is sparse, be glad your daughter is not in tennis or cross country (count those articles!)Parents of youth in smaller sports need their voices heard- all sports should receive recognition, not just football, basketball and a couple of others.

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball is a great game and I think the newspapers need to recognize that not everyone watches football. I'm so tired of these detailed football stories of teams who are (1-9) getting more coverage than matches like these.

I remember in a 04' volleyball match when Lone Peak traveled to Cottonwood, Cottonwood ranked 2nd in 5A and Lone Peak ranked No. 1 in 4A, screaming fans, jam-packed gym, senior night for the colts and likely one of the best matches I've seen, and the newspaper titles "Cottonwood downs top ranked Knights in 5-game Thriller" with a one paragraph review!

Times still hasn't changed!

haha

Response to anoth anon: well if ur daughter grows up to be good enough to enter the ATP, she can make u millions of dollars.

: ) just saying.

The sad thing is

that Utah volleyball is excellent on the national level. As mentioned, LP, PG and Brighton have been nationally ranked this decade. All three in recent years have traveled to prestigious out-of-state tournaments and done well. LP will go to Chicago to play in the Nike tournament. Brigton's only loss was a few years back was to the #1 team in the country in a very tough and tight match.

It seems that the D-News and other papers tend to have covered Girl's Soccer a lot more than volleyball. I think excellence should get more attention and quite frankly girl's soccer in Utah does not compete as well as volleyball on the national scene. As far as fan interest, the LP-PG match had as much of a crowd as any boy's basketball game would draw for a typical high school. The intensity and level of play was incredible.

I was disappointed in the length of space given to this match, as it was truly one of the top athletic events for that week in any sport. Let's hope that the D-News gives more space for the next LP-PG match as well as other top matches across the state.

more News paper and TV

Girls volleyball deserves more news paper coverage. It deserves more TV coverage. Tuesday and Thursday nights should have volleyball highlights on TV.
Lets start an e-mail campaign to the TV stations to get all the excellent girls teams the respect and exposure they deserve. People that dont support there high school volleyball team are MISSING OUT!!!
