It's irrational to think that our economy will not take years to recover regardless of any bail out. To resolve the financial industry we need laws and regulations in place first. Government take overs have never been worthwhile or productive and more costly to tax payers than leaving things alone. If the federal government takes over the finacial businesses it will take them years to figure out what to do with it and how to profit from it. By then the damage and colapse will have happened anyway. Federal government intervention should be limited to regulating and laws so it doesn't continue. With Bush's plan, those in power will remain in power and positions to operate what the government buys with the coninuation of current practices. As these old and corrupt business fail, new ones will emerge and pick up the pieces just like free enterprise allows. As these new business pick up the pieces new laws and regulaltions should be in place. The government must also start practicing responsilbe spending and not robbing from other governmnet agecny's like the SSA. Government should be self sufficient with it's own reserves. The SSA belongs to individual people, not for government use.

I think both Democrats and Republicans can agree that this "solution" is very problematic and is yet another blemish on the Bush administration.

with him or against him

How dare the representatives frim Utah challenge the Bush Administration. He has 80% support here and it would be unpatriotic to not give him bailout money and full unfettered authority to procced.

This is one more reason I'm supporting Obama this year.

As I tell my conservative friends, Republicans have had the White House for 8 years, 7 of the 9 Supreme Court Justices, and have controlled Congress 12 of the last 14 years. How is that working out?

Seriously, are these characters supporting conservative principles? Is America on sound financial footing? Are we respected abroad, free of excessive foreign entanglements? Is America still a country where every person has an equal chance, or are some people getting ahead at everyone else's expense?

And now we're going to nationalize a huge chunk of the financial system because of insufficient regulation of capital markets.

But most Utahns still won't have anything to do with Obama. I would think that even a die-hard Republican might think that it was time to try something new.

liberal Larry

It's really sad to see the hash that Bush and the republicans have made out of this once great country. I know that cranky conservatives like to blame past democratic presidents for the current debacle, one even going back to JIMMY CARTER! The fact is is Bush had 6 solid years of republican control of the house and senate to get his act together and all he could do was snooze at the wheel while the housing crisis brewed. I knew we were in trouble when I got a "liar loan" back in 2003. They merely asked me what my income was with no verification! (I just used it to refinance some real estate), but you could see the potential consequences of such lax over sight. Hey, Mr. Deregulation himself, Ron Reagan, used to say, "Trust, but verify," I'll have to catch George Will to find out why this economic melt down is really FDR's fault.

Good ol' Rob

You can certainly tell that Rob Bishop is running for re-election. He is taking up his "let's wait and see" attitude prior to the Nov. election time so as not to be committed to anything which might cost him some votes. Come on Rob. Jump right in and commit to something...like the pro-voucher stance you took last year.

Some, in this forum please quit making of each screw up a problem of the current administration, regardless of party. No economic problem is based on current policy. If so, the Democratic congress can't find big enough caves to hide in. Every single program they promised when they took over in 2006 has not evolved. To see socialism at its best, look at other countries with it and see absolute worse care for the overall population. Programs for the real needy and children yes, others NO. Private Ins. is far superior. Larry(comments already) took the loan, then blames the repub.congress for allowing him to have it. UNBELIEVABLE. So now you want the congress to be your conscience and force you to be ethical by THEIR OVERSIGHT and that's what making an Obama voter. Wow, are we in for a country of finger pointers and lack of persons who made this country great, moving ahead with capitalism, not socialism. The day Clinton was elected, every small business person suffered, I know, I was one and the words they talk, are not what they do. McCain will vote right, not on party lines. Vote smart, not party.

Utah Delegation voices concern over BUSH plan.

I'm sorry, I had to type that phrase over again to verify what I was reading.

The old guy and the news model have successfully divorced themselves from the REPUBLICAN Party. Could it be that what is good for the presidential ticket will be good for the Utah delegation?

Bush a conservative?

Prior to this, Bush presided over the largest transfer of wealth of a gov't program with the Medicare legislation. This bailout is also historic. The dems balanced the budget in the '90's and showed some fiscal responsibility. Seems the Repubs like to talk a good talk but in actuality are irresponsible with our money.

I have voted straight Republican for the past 24 years. No more...

Seven years ago Bush give a huge tax break to the richest of our citizens then watch as they outsource American jobs to India and China then give an unprecedented bailout of the stock market and do it NOW!! Whow, someone has benefited from the Bush administration, but it hasn't been me and it doesn't look like it will be either.

Considering the cost of the war, the rise in national debt, and the proposed bailout and it's over $25,000 per person. We don't even have to add in the profits of oil companies or the increased costs of food, housing, or just about anything else to see that some of us have been left holding the bag for some who have made huge amounts of money.

Considering all this, I'm not sure I trust our president to show any concern for me. I figure this is his last ditch effort to line the pockets of those much more well healed then I am.

re RL

go back to your gun loving alaska hunting lodge and sip cognac with your rich friends.

Himself

To RL. I have heard many times in the last few days
that the market is irrational. So are elections.
Paulson is holding a gun to his own head and threatening to shoot if we don't hand over the money.

Good luck to your man McCain who has to defend that on Friday.

Just Say NO

Do This TODAY -> Call your Congressman and Senators and tell them NO. The taxpayers should not be responsible for Wall Street mismanagement!

700 Billion is more than we have spent fighting in Iraq since 2003, just to put it in perspective for everyone since it is not a large amount for the Washington Boys Club.

Kevin in the Terrace

Whose going to bail out the U.S. government when it goes bankrupt???!!! If the government had not run up so much debt our economy and government would be able to absorb this. However, now we have had record budget deficits for years due to go it alone politics, tax cuts for the cronies that got us into this mess, irresponsible fiscal policy, and a grossley mismanaged war. Finally our government pushed home ownership through subprime loans and deregulation which artificially infated housing prices and encouraged those who could not afford to own a home to buy.

C.W.

I, also, am adamantly opposed to the bailout, I have some background in finance and can see that a bailout is a REALLY bad idea for some of the same reasons that have already been given. I've already emailed all three of my Congressional reps. to tell them why and I urge everyone to do the same. I am a Republican but I am embarassed that Bush would even THINK of doing something this dumb. I think most Congress people don't understand the issue and after Bush has botched up so many things they are reluctant just on the face of his reputation to go along with him. After all, he won't be there in 6 months when the whole thing implodes, Congresspersons will be wise to get some advice from, say, university economists who don't have a vested interest in seeing the bailout happen. I am still voting for McCain because of Palin but this whole problem will probably be stuck (undeservedly) on the Republicans. Bernanke and Paulsen also won't be around in 3 or 4 months so why should they do anything but try to cover their friends' losses?

Bailout might be needed

For those of you who think this is due to a Bush or Clinton administration, you're mostly wrong. Go take an Economics course.

And for those of you who think this is a black and white decision, you obviously do not understand the devastation that could occur if the Wall Street collapses. Yes, there needs to be some responsibility placed on the firms, but this is a crisis that must be dealt with.

re: RL highly ethical liberal L.

RL, I wasn't complaining that I got the loan, I've got assets and income to cover such a debt, but not everyone can be counted on to be honest in a similar situation. The careless monitoring of the financial industry is very consistent with the wacky notion of "deregulation" that has enthralled the anti-government righties.

Mahershalalhashbaz

Better to let the economy die than to go into a socialist/communist arrangement in the economy. I see this as a power grab. Government taking over private companies (ie fanny/freedie, aig). Not good. Bring on the Next great depression, then in the end we will at least still be free. Take away peoples freedom to fail, you take away their freedom.

KingM

C.W.,

I agree with every single thing you wrote up until this line: "I am still voting for McCain because of Palin."

What? Palin? Why? She's going to be VP, and probably won't have a whole lot of say in the administration. Cheney is the exception, but VP is typically the most worthless job in all of Washington.

Look, I have voted Republican more often than not, including voting for Bush the first time around, but I cannot understand this tendency of friends of mine to want to throw good money after bad. Even if you're not sold on the Democrats, there is no way that the Republicans will change the mess that they have become unless they are voted out of office. If you continue to vote for the Republicans in spite of gross mismanagement of our country and economy, you're just voting for them because they're your team. It's like cheering for BYU when they have a losing season. That's good and loyal in sports, but disastrous in politics.

Seriously, folks, the current guys are not working out. How about we try something different?

Dear KingM, for the SEVEN YEARS PLUS since 9-11, the Republicans you so scornfully despise, led by none other than "evil George", have prevented a SINGLE terrorist attack from occuring on America.

I'd say it's working out pretty freakin' good.

My IRA growing fatter and fatter would be nice, even super nice, but money doesn't mean jack squat when terrorists are parking suicide bombs in your driveway, now does it?

"Crazy talk", you say, from a fear-mongering Republican?

Do you REALLY think that if we'd done nothing after 9-11 that bin Laden would have decided to just keep living peacefully in his cave?

And, oh, BTW, 9-11 probably wouldn't even had happened had your man, the gutless, adulterous Bill Clinton responded adequately to terrorist attacks in HIS 8 years in the White House.
