Hubbub over tent-city idea irritates Chaffetz

This is becoming rather funny. The Western Governors conference wants a centralized location for processing and sending back illegal aliens. Instead of building a permanent facility which to me is a waste, someone suggests a tent city. After all Maricopa County in Arizona has used them for years. Even our troops use them. They are not meant to be permanent homes to illegal aliens, only temporary while they are processed.

Enter the Japanese American Citizens League, who on a tip by a Latino organization complains, comparing it to Americans of Japanese decent being detained during WWII in camps. It's not the same thing. And the fact is, the majority of illegals in this country are from Mexico. Studies have been done that prove this. Please do some searching on your choice of search engine and you will find them. We share borders.

Mexico's President complaining openly about us returning his people, when his country has a much worse record in how they treat illegals, and the several very vocal Latino organizations that try to paint everyone racist that tries to help stop the immigration problem, tends to bring Mexico to the front of any discussion.

If tents are good enough for our soldiers they are good enough for everybody.

Arizona puts their criminals in tent cities. Send those whinners down to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, he'll set them straight.

This is in no way even remotely similar to the Japanese internment camps. The Japanese were victims. They were American citizens horribly treated by their government.

The illegals are not citizens of the US and if they want to be treated as such they need to go where ever it is that they are citizens.

Chaffetz is right.
Bob G | 4:15 a.m. Sept. 19, 2008
I'm all for these tent cities to act as detention and holding facilities of illegal aliens to make it easier to deport them. I'm also for confiscating any and all assets as illegal and ill gotten gains in the act of criminal activities. Being an illegal alien is a criminal act so they must surrender all possesions, including any money, credit cards, and financial documents. All legal documents must be taken from them as well. Issue them John Doe documents as illegal aliens with an identifieing picture and number. They should be detained along with their entire families to keep them as a unit or family. This includes all anchor babies whose birth certificats should be invalidated as false and given citizenship of their parents country. Once these illegal aliens are secured they can be turned over to the federal prison system and federal government to house them and process them out of the country. This kind of process is what the federal government needs with state support and help. The Japanese americans should have no problems as these are not the same situation as the camps in WWII. These are known illegal alien terrorist from a different country.

Chaffetz seems to be the only person in this debate with reason on his side. I doubt his proposal is based on ethnicity - it is based on legal status. He believes in honoring and sustaining the law, in contrast to his detractors.

Little wonder so many look at us as being weird.

Why would these groups talk to Chaffetz? They obviously care less about the truth than trying to keep him from winning the election. So much hysteria is all about politics, folks, and when it's not about politics, it's about hidden politics.
Tom | 5:45 a.m. Sept. 19, 2008
In other words, we can have a tent city in Phoenix for Maricopa County miscreants, and one at San Quentin but we can't offend the sensitivities of those who want to fight for the non-existant rights of illegal (as in criminal) immigrants? Give me a break. They lived in the desert under the brush and mesquite trees to get here. Living in a tent as they depart is a step up. Mexico shoots those infiltrating their southern-most border. Check it out. This is fact, not hyperbole.

When the Mexicans go home
America will find out what a mistake they have caused
with violance to others
America is now a hateful place to live
You do not need to be Mexican

I think they should be treated like the criminals they are. I am tired of them coming illegally. We are talking about criminals here...not children. I hate the tagging, the gangs, and having to have things in Spanish...THIS IS AMERICA!
By the way, you are not racist if you feel this way. Mexico does nothing to discourage them and they treat anyone as a visitor with an infraction horribly.
It is time to make a stand!

Chaffetz said it's not prison camps, but it's meant for fugitives. So what's the place called where fugitives are held when captured? Prisons.

You can call it a bagel, Chaffetz, It's still a prison.

Jason has real answers, and is not biased. Mr. Honda admitted on Doug Wright, that he was criticizing Chaffetz based on information from National LaRaza, not Jason. Mr. Honda, along with Senator Clinton and groups like JACL are trying to spend $600,000,000.00 tax payer money to help immigrants and businesses that hire them. It says those that need help with English, which is good, it doesn't say they are here legally.

Jason's Democrat opponent, during this last few weeks weakened his stand on immigration. Did he have to do it to get the support of Honda?
Look at the differences:
"3. Bring undocumented immigrants out of the shadows and put those who are in good standing on a pathway to citizenship so that they can contribute to society by paying their fair share of taxes."

It said before a fine would be required. And it said English. It also said get in line. Why has he softened this?

"Bring undocumented immigrants out of the shadows and permit those who are in good standing to pay a fine, learn English, and get in line to become legal US citizens. "

I am voting for Jason Chaffetz. Let's fix Legal Immigration.
Comes Back to Bite You | 7:29 a.m. Sept. 19, 2008
During the primary campaign, I heard Chaffetz praise the Mericopa County Sheriff's plan for using tent cities in the desert. But as soon as he used that in his conventions speech to a wider audience, I knew it was going to come back to bite him.

It may have received a loud applause from the delegates, but he's never going to be taken seriously on the national stage.

He's not even elected yet and he's already sunk his credibility with his colleagues.

Sensationalistic writing...

Instead of accusations, why don't you contact BOTH sides and get all the details before writing the article? I'd like to know the details of the Chaffetz plan on illegal immigration instead of someone else's interpretation of his plan.

Ernest T. Bass | 7:38 a.m. Sept. 19, 2008
Chaffetz is simply unbelievable. The guy is insane and not fit to run a pack of cub scouts much less work in government.
You guys will get what you deserve when he's elected. He will turn more moderates into democrats.

I heard a wise man say that we should be judged on how we treat the most vulnerable people in society. In which case Jason C is a horrible person.

America is a great and charitable nation. We let more people immigrate to this country than any other. To say we are a hateful people is just plain wrong and Americans know it. We do have the right to protect our border and remove those who have come here illegally. In my religion, we have a set of scriptures. And in that scripture it warns us over and over not to let robbers and secret combinations get over our heads or the nation will be destroyed. In my opinion, illegal immigration qualifies as a secret combination.
Realist | 7:58 a.m. Sept. 19, 2008
My prediction is that Chaffetz will find out that he can talk a hard point while running for office, but that taking his tune to Washington will work out about as well for him as anyone else in the past. Neither the Republican nor the Democratic party will ever do anything significant about illegal immigration because BOTH parties benefit from the huge surplus of cheap labor. The best fix for illegal immigration is a completely stagnant economy. Hey, good news. We're almost there!

WOW! Am I living on Planet Hatred?? Bob G, I bet that youre LDS No wonder I dont attend church. Do you know the definition of terrorist? It is someone who uses violence, especially bombing, kidnapping, and assassination, to intimidate others, often for political purposes. Sounds like our own government not these poor people trying to find work and a stable home to live in. Maybe these people would stop looking for refuge in our country if wed stop meddling around in their countries and if our CIA would stop training terrorists at the School of Americas then sending them down South youd see immigration drop. Mexico has partnered with the United States to keep people from coming into Mexico from Central & South America since they would eventually end up crossing the boarder. Theyre shooting those people on their own boarder on our behalf. I am so saddened that so many people would let their bigotry get in the way instead of seeing whats really going on that our government is fleecing us, not these poor immigrants.

Arc, please spare us.

It is fun to watch the We-Love-Chaffetz crowd.

If Jason Chaffetz was caught robbing a bank his supporters would tell us Chaffetz was only saving us from evil bankers or something.

The issue here is one of integrity. During the convention in front of radical right-wing, anti-Hispanic types Chaffetz gives us the whole tents in the desert with razor wire. It played really well for the rabid right.

He gets into a primary and suddenly he stops talking about his concentration camps and then decided to give all illegal aliens visas. Primary voters are far more moderate.

Wins the primary and he is back to his concentration camps.

When called on his concentration camps his first answer was to deny it. Then shifted to saying he was only restating the Governors Association position, and he added the whole razor wire idea.

Now the truth comes out that the Governors Association never called for tents he is taking his 5th position on this that he is just trying to be effecient.

Which Chaffetz should we believe?

And moderators, I know that you are essentially part of the Chaffetz campaign. Allow some free speech. This is an example.

Does Utah need to take advice from Mr. Honda in California? Maybe Mr. Honda stays in Washington too much. Hasn't he seen what uncontrolled immigration has done to Califronia? Call me a racist if you like, but California has real problems--Utah doesn't need to follow in the same footsteps.

Jenna,
Go to jason for congress, his website. click on issues, and then, Click here for Jason's Comprehensive Immigration Policy

His first is Legal Immigration..

"There are millions of people from around the world who seek to legally become a citizen of the United States of America. Unfortunately, the system is failing. Last year the Wall Street Journal stated the current green-card backlog includes applicants who face a 22-year wait time. This doesnt work for anybody. We need to implement the leadership necessary to fix this problem and appropriate the money needed to thoroughly process applicants in a timely manner. Until legal immigration works, we will continue to have major problems."
Jason the Smitor | 8:13 a.m. Sept. 19, 2008
The only thing worse than suggesting we should put people in tent cities is to express displeasure for the backlash. Seriously, Jase, it IS a big deal. I'm a Republican, I don't want a democrat in office. That's not the reason for my outrage. But, I don't want an idiot in office either.

I disagree that "illegal immigration qualifies as a secret combination".

Most of those that come here, legally or not, are trying to come for a better life. Most that come here illegally are good people that have made a bad choice.

If they realized that they could come here quicker legally or if they thought that coming here illegally would get them no where, we wouldn't have the problem we have.

The Utah Minuteman Project now has a phone line that you can call to report the name of a business that hires illegals 738-8503. If we pressure the business community to stop hiring the illegals then we would see the number of illegals decrease.

The soldiers who live in "tent cities" voluntarily signed up for that job, are paid a salary, and have health care for the rest of their lives.

If you're willing to give those same benefits to the immigrants you put in tent cities, then I might think it's a good idea.
anonymous | 8:30 a.m. Sept. 19, 2008
I spent nearly a year in Iraq in a tent. It had wooden floors, air conditioning and electricity. If we put Soldiers in tents, then it should be good enough for illegal immigrants while they are working to gain legitimate employment, residency and citizenship. It would lower their costs to help them futher get on their feet as they begin a legitimate new start in the United States. It is still better than where they are coming from. I didn't hear our distinguished elected representatives at the State and National level complain that Soldiers were in tents so this shouldn't be an issue now.
Responding to Anonymous | 8:41 a.m. Sept. 19, 2008
Being in the U.S. illegally is not a secret combination. Secret combinations refer to organizations like the Mafia or the KKK. Granted, some gangs would fall under that umbrella, but not all gangs are made of immigrants. Most undocumented aliens are economic refugees who feel they have no where to turn. The system to let them into the U.S. is broken and corrupt, so they chose an illegal route out of desperation. And they actually contribute to our economy more than they drain it. Some criminals and gangsters exist, but they exist also in our own nice little "legal" communities just as much. Not all taggers, gangsters, and criminals are mexican (or latino), which is what many people are implying. Sadly, this issue is becoming more about assumptions based on skin color and last names, using illegal immigrants to detract from the real issue and hard work of fixing a broken immigration system and learning to accept the changing face of America.
Phantom Panther | 8:42 a.m. Sept. 19, 2008
Lawbreakers need to be locked up, either in prison or "tent cities." Our troops can live in tents and the liberals don't complain. However, try putting criminals in tents and they are up in arms. It's not about "compassion" and "caring," it's about obeying the law. Personally, I'm sick of seeing people promote lawbreaking while hiding behind "compassion."

You are not racist? Only illegal immigrants tag and are in gangs? Is learning a second language "too hard"? Sorry, most countries require their students to know at least two languages to graduate high school. Maybe we should grow up and stop crying and do something constructive. Point your fingers and remember there are three pointing right back at you.
Hatuletoh | 8:51 a.m. Sept. 19, 2008
Not that I disagree with with you all above on the need to control illegal immigration, but just out of curiosity: were any of you actually interned in a camp like Topaz? Do you descend from anyone who did?

I think of this because I was casually discussing polyagamy the other day, and I found my Southern Utahan audience distinctly uncomfortable. Realizing that I'd stumbled upon a subject of heightened cultural sensitivity for them, I quickly changed the subject.

My point being is that if Jason Chaffetz can't understand why the image of people rounded up and stuck in camps in the Utah desert upsets people who actually WERE rounded up and stuck in camps in the Utah desert, then he isn't very bright. And he's surely no gentleman, because a gentleman would first apologize for the discomfort he created before launching into a defense of his political policy, or suggesting his detractors aren't entitled to their very understandable cultural sensitivity on this issue.

Then again, very few gentleman are politicians, and vice-versa.

Both Rep. Honda and these groups are being played by the most racist organization in the United States, La Raza (the race). They advocate for the rights of illegal aliens from Spanish-speaking countries, even the most hardened criminals who've raped young children.

I see nothing wrong with placing criminal, fugitive illegal aliens in tent cities while they wait deportation. There is limited jail space available to ICE agents and many times local police are told to turn illegal aliens loose after they're arrested, even for serious crimes. If there was a large tent-city available, the police could just drop the illegals off there.

There is nothing racist about controlling our borders and removing hard-core criminals from our country. There's usually a reason why some of these folks want to avoid the background screening that comes with the legal immigration process.

I am impressed with the comments on here. The majority are thoughtful and insightful. I'm reminded of when Jason was on the Doug Wright Show and Doug was going on and on about all the innocents who would be affected by Jason's policy. That's a very one sided view considering that the number of innocents on the side of illegal immigration is significantly smaller than the innocents who have to pay taxes to support the consequences of our nation's leaders' failure to enforce our current laws for twenty plus years. And now that our economy is spiraling downward, the burden for us is getting heavier to bear. Thank heaven's we finally have a politician (or a statesman rather) who has the will to solve a very difficult problem. Jason Chaffetz for US Congress. Go Jason!!!

*** "DCD, and how do these people know they are illegal?" ***

Everyone I know has documents that can prove they are legal. Is it a crime for ICE to be a bit more suspcicious if you can't speak English or speak it with a thick accent? God forbid our law enforcement officers use their brains when fighting crime. We should make it illegal for policemen to use their brains. After all, our politicians and mortgage lenders do just fine without using theirs.

Missing here is the real issue: while Japanese-Americans CITIZENS had no choice during WW2 but the detention camps, these ILLEGAL NON-CITIZENS have a certain path to avoid their (very temporary) detention in tent cities: GO HOME TO WHERE THEY BELONG!

Simple solution. I don't want them to be in tent cities: not for a month, not for a day, not for an hour. And I have some very simple advice for how they can avoid that result: pack up and go home.

Sorry, folks, it's not about racism. It's about the rule of law. You can imagine as many grievances as you'd like, however.

Here's my question - when we "return" the Mexican portion of the illegals to their home after they cross the border illegally, why just drop them off on the other side of the border? Personally, I think they all could use a nice, soothing flight to Cancun (look it up on a map). Ah, Cancun - just about as far as you can get from the U.S. border. Sure, it could cause them a bit of inconvenience to get back to their hometowns, but cry me a river - now you're as far away as can be from my country's borders. I'm sure it would reduce the number who cross again and again.

Over 90% of illegal immigrants are non-white. To the extent that they are white

Open borders kooks know this to be true. They call people who say they're opposed to illegal immigration "racists" even when we never mention anything about race. Why do you assume we're racists? Because you know very well that MOST illegal aren't white.

There are supposedly about 70,000 Irishmen in he USA illegally. I'm for sending them packing, too. You're the racist for assuming I'm not. If every last one of the 15 million or so illegal aliens were white I'd still want to send them home. I'm sorry I don't have a chance to prove that, but I can't change the facts on the ground.
