6.5 percent margin of error? What a craptastic poll.

Corroon, Horiuchi, Matheson and all other Democratic candidates benefit immensely from the positive/un-negative coverage they get from Utah's lapdog media.
Huh | 2:41 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
Nancy Workman thought about running for Clerk? Are you kidding me? What's next, Enid Green running for ethics csar?

An small island of sanity in a ocean of delusions.

The really surprising thing is how close these two races are, given the huge disparity in money and publicity the incumbents have received. Particularly so with Horiuchi, leading only by five percent?

Go Peter... I just get frustrated with the Mormon religion that actually preaches Republican in sacrament meeting. I don't know how a Democrat could make it. It is so brainwashingly dispicable.
put the coattails on | 3:34 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
And sweep Obama in with the SL democrates! Let's show the country that Utah no longer walks lockstep into the darkness with the GOP!

Who's game to give DNC a try, and tell the GOP, No McCain, no Palin.
Really | 3:41 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
You mean all those people saying Utahns will only vote Republican where wrong?? Shocking!!
Calling BS | 4:06 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
anon 3:30, I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you haven't been to a sacrament meeting of the "Mormon religion" in at least 10 years, if ever. So how would you know that they "preach Republican". I'm LDS and a Democrat and I've NEVER ONCE heard the word Republican said over the pulpit. I'm as tired of Utah's politics as anyone, but don't spread lies about the LDS church.
Anonymous | 4:17 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
This is crazy. Corruption is running rampant in the GOP. Why would anyone vote for them AGAIN?
observation | 4:23 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
I havent followed what Horiuchi has done while in office, so I cannot comment on his effectiveness. I did see him make a fool of himself on TV a few months ago.

One of the TV news stations had him on with a representative of the payday lending industry to talk about an ordinance he was proposing to limit payday lenders. One of the first things Horiuchi said in support of his ordinance was that payday lenders were not regulated by any governmental agency, then he went on to enumerate various ills of payday lenders.

What Horiuchi did not know was that payday lenders are regulated by the state of Utah. The Utah Department of Financial Institutions sends examiners into payday lenders all the time. By first stating that payday lenders are not regulated, he destroyed his credibility.

Had he known that payday lenders were regulated, he could have perhaps made a credible argument about the weakness of the regulation and the need to strengthen it, but by being so woefully ill-prepared he severely damaged his and his constituents cause.

We need someone better informed if we want protection from rapacious payday lenders.

I don,t know where you get your information. I have never heard of the mormon church telling it's members how to vote.News to me.

Corroon is a true nice guy...it is sad that the people he has given execuitve jobs may be the down-fall of his administration and is too late to fix that ..Nancy would be proud!
Alex | 4:25 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
Anon 3:30 - I've NEVER heard "Republican [preached] in sacrament meeting," and I'm active in the LDS Church. I'd like to know where you heard that.

Good for Salt Francisco!
Robert | 4:55 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
In my opinion, Mayor Corroon's margin is due in large measure to his handling of the Real Salt Lake controversy. He, unlike others in government, actually studied whether giving tax money to RSL for its new stadium in Sandy would benefit the citizens of Salt Lake County. After a thorough investigation, including obtaining an opinion from outside experts, he decided that the deal was not a good deal for County taxpayers, and he rejected it.

It was only the intervention of the Legislature and the Governor that gave life to the deal. In my view, if they had done the same homework that Corroon did, they would have reached the same conclusions he reached. But they didn't. In any event, his method of handling the proposal is the kind of approach that all government leaders ought to take when faced with proposals for major expenditures of tax money.
Re: anon | 4:53 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
I've been to hundreds of sacrament meetings and have never once heard Republican preached. You must be confusing us with another religion. I think maybe your the one who is brainwashed.
Re: Anonymous | 4:17 | 5:09 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
And there is no corruption in the Democrat Party?
anonymous | 5:43 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
Observation must own one of those loansharking payday lender outfits Horiuchi was right 350 percent interest is criminal.
Bear Laker | 6:05 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
No!!!! Unless self rightous and hypocritical counts. If they had a brain they would be Republican.
Earl Hamiliton | 6:15 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
It is great that Salt Lake County can offset the dead lock that the Republicans have on Utah. Corroon has proven to be an excellent moderate leader. Utah should be proud to have him as the Mayor of our most populated county. Compared to the nut case administration of Workman and Curtis, Corroon is running a great ship. We need more moderate Democrats elected in Salt Lake County. They are concerned about good open government and are a balance to the ultra conservative Republicans who run this state. We need to especially elect Democrats in the South end of the valley. We need to dump Greg Curtis and his band of neo-cons. Curtis and the rest of the South Valley GOP have been bought and paid for by Special interest groups. Look at where their election money is coming from. Vote for Seegmiller, Black, Beck, and the other excellent Democrats in South Valley. Vote Democratic and save Utah.
It's my greatest wish... | 7:29 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
to have the Republican Party actually have to work for votes on issues and not sit back and know they'll be reelected no matter what they do. Go Utah! Go Salt Lake! Show them they can't govern by fiat anymore.
Seriously | 9:17 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
How can anyone take a candidate seriously that has only raised $9,000? I could not have the confidence in a "leader" that does not take his own campaign seriously enough.
Good Luck SLC | 10:02 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
Good luck SLC.

The liberal - big government - lefties are finally getting the foothold there too. When will the masses finally learn that free markets and small government work and entitlements and big government do not. Regardless of party, big government does not work.

Less tax, less governmental interference works.

Given time, the Lefties will soon drive SLC into the duldrums that they have done to so many big cities across the country. Good luck SLC fighting your way out of that corner.

Vote in Obama on a national level and that will only compound the problem. Every dollar you earn will go towards a newer, bigger, governmental program. McCain may not be much better - but on the margin - he will at least not give as many handouts as Obama and his socialist ideals.

Take a stand against Big government!
Utah County Citizen | 10:13 p.m. Sept. 15, 2008
that's because Salt Lake County is getting to be one of the most liberal cities in america. very sad. loss of core values.
CP | 7:18 a.m. Sept. 16, 2008
Time for PEter Caroon to find a new job. Personally I feel he hasn't done anything for this county. This county is up in crime and I feel the morale is gone.
To Utah County: | 8:07 a.m. Sept. 16, 2008
Liberal means loss of core values? Hmmm, to me it means taking care of your neighbors, your planet, your children; better education, better social values, better environment. Not like the current "conservative" administration (also found in Utah County) where big business rules, people think the planet can take the pollution we are putting out, and it seems like we can spend as much as we need on a war to protect our oil, rather than find alternative forms of energy or conserve.
I'd be embarrassed to be considered anything but "liberal". My values are strong, I volunteer, contribute to good causes and work to improve the environment. Hope we can elect more people that care, like us "liberals"!
liberal Larry | 8:15 a.m. Sept. 16, 2008
Caroon is the real deal, he's fiscally conservative, and a compassionate, moderate, liberal. My type of politician.
On the other hand, I can't vote for Horiuchi, he's just too friendly with the evil developers.
Re: To Utah County: | 8:07 a.m | 9:43 a.m. Sept. 16, 2008
Yes, liberal does mean loss of core values. Liberal policies are erroding our society from the inside out like a cancer. Liberals like to say how enviromentally friendly they are but they are missing the point. The environment is not the most important issue we are facing. The most important issue is the lack of any moral compass our society has these days. I am conservative and probably have less of a so called "carbon footprint" than most liberals. I only commute three miles. I have a small house. I buy enough wind power to supply my house with power each month. I'd be embarrased to be considered anything but "conservative". We need to elect more people that care about important issues, like us "conservatives" (and that does not mean republican)!
Re: liberal Larry | 10:18 a.m. Sept. 16, 2008
Evil developers? Do you live in a house? Did evil humans construct your house or did it just natually spring up from the ground?
jake | 11:04 a.m. Sept. 16, 2008
Liberal Larry is on target, all you have to do is show the Mayor a problem and he will hire a consultant to confirm that there is in fact a problem. Now that is action! (thousands and thousands spent on consultants) You would think it would be more effective just to hire qualified managers insted of political hacks.

Do your homework folks. Steve DeBry is a fresh new candidate on the political scene. Unlike Horouchi, Steve DeBry doesn't have to raise lots of $$$$. EVERYONE can vouch for his integrity and remarkable abilities!!

It's time for a change on the Salt Lake County Council and he's the man!! Go DEBRY!

Vote For the Man | 4:59 p.m. Sept. 16, 2008

Peter Caroon still has my vote! He does what's best for the tax payers, not the special interest groups that want to raise our taxes for everything!

Steve DeBry will be a refreshing change for the Salt Lake County Council. His law enforcement experience will be a real asset.

Re Re liberal Larry | 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16, 2008
I did a little development of some farm land my family owned. Lots of money for little work, gave most of it to family members, it was a distasteful experience. I feel like taking a shower every time I think of it.
Diane | 7:36 p.m. Sept. 16, 2008
I'm certain that Horouchi can raise enormous amounts of money from the "Good Old Boys" and the special interest groups who will come to collect on their donations. Horouchi has been on the County Council since it's beginning and so far I don't know of anything he's accomplished and/or done for the tax payers of Salt Lake County.
So perhaps it's time for a new face on the County Council and even though his campaign treasury is not large...you can be sure STEVE DEBRY is not beholding to anyone!!
Jake | 7:39 p.m. Sept. 16, 2008
re:seriously $9,000 isn't too bad for an unknown challenger! it is incredibily hard for an unknown to raise money. When people give thounands and thousands of $ they expect something in return.
Is it possible for Mayor Coroon to remain the man we love and respect after getting that kind of money. What are the donors getting for their money? THIS IS POLITICS AFTER ALL
cynic | 8:30 p.m. Sept. 16, 2008
re Jake 7:39
You are such a cynic! I'm sure that people, organizations, businesses donated to the Mayor because he is such a nice person and they just like him.
Just like Curtis has raised $500,000+ because he is such a nice guy Or did Curtis raise his $500,000 because he is a ...

Horiuchi has don tons for Salt Lake County residents. He saved Millcreek Canyon and Dimple Dell. He built the Clark Planetarium and the Childrens Museum. He's doone more for Salt Lake County than anyone in history.

re: liberal fred
being liberal shouldn't translate as being gullible, we are in the presence of a master politician, Randy plays both sides of the isle like a fine violin and yes the citizens of our County have benifited.
Our hero has benifited and his friends get richer..
....c'est la vie
