This story obviously reads as it was written for the paper. Since I am reading in on a computer it is slightly annoying.

Brilliant! Seemed obvious to me it was a contest for people who live in SLC, so go buy a paper if you live there!
It really is here? | 11:18 a.m. Sept. 16, 2008
FINALLY!

And...
Where's the first prize $$$? That's kind of sad...

We love the contest and have participated every year. It's a great family tradition. We have always gotten every clue right, but have never won. But, it's the chase that's fun! The only change I would suggest is smaller prizes and a tee shirt with the picures of the clues on it for everyone that gets all of the clues correctly. Think about it for next year!

If you look to the right of your comment, there is a box that says Story Photos. They are all there. Good luck.

I know where three of these are right off the bat. I just have to go get the "official" addresses. Fun. I love doing this contest. I've never won, but have a great time finding everything.

Tee shirts with all the pictures would be a great idea.
Love's a Challenge | 3:42 p.m. Sept. 16, 2008
I really had a scare this year when Itty Bitty didn't show the first Friday in Sept., I've been going through withdrawals. So imagine how excited I was to open the paper today and see Itty Bitty!! I just want to say thanks to Elaine for coming out of retirement to make some die-hard fans happy!! Who cares about the prizes....it's the challenge I love. (and the exercise...and being down town...and the fall air) Thanks

Itty Bitty Fan, great suggestion.

DN, not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but won't a $100 gift certificate to Ruth's Chris Steak House get me a baked potato and maybe a dollop of butter? Next year, how bout a certificate to a non-chain, locally owned restaurant?
Anonymous | 11:33 p.m. Sept. 16, 2008
Johny, what a great idea! I love the one time I was able to afford Ruths Chris, but I'd take Red Iguana any day over nat'l chain; perfect steak or no.

Only 8 to go! Woo Hoo...hope to you all there...I will be the one with a red rose in my teeth!
Anonymous | 8:19 p.m. Sept. 17, 2008
I'm with you 8 more left. See you at the finish line. It is alot of fun, isn't it!
treasure hunter | 7:52 a.m. Sept. 18, 2008
Okay...now I'm down to 6...but these are killer hard. Maybe I'll see you before the finish line-- since I obviously have some more walking to do!

Has anyone finished?
Love It! | 3:17 p.m. Sept. 18, 2008
I love this game. My family and I look forward to it every year.

However, I must say I strongly disagree with Itty Bitty Fan. I would much rather have the hopes of winning a big prize and not win anything than have the guarantee of winning a T-shirt.

Even though I have never won a prize and probably never will, it's fun to have the slim chance of winning something big. A T-shirt would just go to waste.

We're also down to 6. Which ones are giving you guys trouble?? I must say, I am tiring of walking thru construction zones and saying "no" to panhandlers. Anyone else getting tired of the "spare change" questions?
treasure hunter | 5:58 p.m. Sept. 18, 2008
We had a very funny experience with a pan handler last year. No matter where we went we found the same man...he obviously didn't recognize us. When he asked for change he asked for a specific amount, 32 cents, 24 cents, 18 cents...so either someone was giving him pennies...or he was choosing random numbers. We had a good laugh about it by the third request.
Eagle Eyes | 2:15 p.m. Sept. 19, 2008
We're excited for this year. I think its finally our turn to win something... but if not, we are just in it for the fun times. We are just getting started so if you find some really hard ones we like the extra clues.
SIXPACK | 9:01 a.m. Sept. 20, 2008
We are going to kick some butt! It's our year!
future winner | 10:26 p.m. Sept. 20, 2008
We're down to 4!!! All 4 are so hard. Has anyone finished yet?
Also an Itty Bitty Fan | 9:34 a.m. Sept. 21, 2008
Future Winner -- We're also down to 4 and have spent hours looking for them! Which 4 are you having trouble with? The trouble-makers for us are: the smiley face; the 4 red squares; the neon sign; and the numbers.
Anonymous | 11:42 a.m. Sept. 21, 2008
this is really not user friendly to print the clues and I didn't want to spend 20 pieces of paper to print the clues

To Anonymous | 2:46 p.m. Sept. 21, 2008
You can get a copy of all the clues at the Deseret News Building on 1st South.
Fith Year | 7:59 p.m. Sept. 21, 2008
Geez....I do not agree with Johnny Fairplay....a $100 gift card to Ruth Chris Steakhouse would be great...who cares how much it would buy you? Plus, it is not about the prizes for us. I don't even know what they are this year. It is all about the hunt! Only 5 more to go - the smilely face, the numbers, the neon, the 4 red sqauares, and the stain glass wing.
treasure hunter | 9:51 p.m. Sept. 21, 2008
There is hope...we are down to our last two, unfortunately...it seems that they are some of the same ones others are missing. We only need the 4 red squares and the neon...and we even went at night to find the neon!

And FYI it is such a kick to win, we got 2nd place a couple of years ago...that will keep us coming back as long as this game goes on!
oh dear | 11:45 a.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I only need 5 more... the same as everyone else... it is starting to frustrate me, but it is still fun!
another treasure hunter | 3:22 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
This is my first year and I really enjoy this treasure hunt. The pan-handlers don't bother me at all. If I have extra money in my pocket I will gladly give it to them. Infact, I am going to put extra change in my pockets before I go out again today so that I can help them out. Whatever happened to just helping out and doing the right thing? My daughters will ask me for a dollar just so that they can contribute whenever they see a homeless person who looks like they might need help.
I never deny them that.

I think T-Shirts are a wonderful idea. Thank you Elaine for making this happen.
bluecooper | 4:55 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
We only need 4 red squares and neon too. Good luck!!
Blurry eyes and tired feet | 9:26 a.m. Sept. 24, 2008
We are down to those 2 also and we swear we have looke dat everything in the area.
Curious | 10:45 a.m. Sept. 24, 2008
Is there any chance that those two are missing? Has anyone seen them? Would the DN tell us if they were gone?
Ginger Love | 2:41 p.m. Sept. 24, 2008
Bluecooper, I don't know if she was you but I saw a lady downtown with just those two left, and she was really good looking. If that was you, WOW you are amazing. Good Luck, I hope you win.
Also an Itty Bitty Fan | 3:18 p.m. Sept. 24, 2008
Yes, D News will print a correction if there's something wrong with the clues. It seems like there's at least one every year!
2 Clues Missing | 12:15 p.m. Sept. 25, 2008
FYI an article came out today that does confirm that the red squares and the neon sign are indeed no longer there.
Too bad I didn't read it before I went out for two hours today to look for those very clues! Oh well... at least we're finished now!
No Quitter | 1:46 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Hallelujah!!! Finished at last - lost a few pounds in the process...
Soaking Wet | 8:37 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Has anyone fount Mr. Smiley face yet? We spent four hours today in the pouring rain, to no avail. Is the picture deceiving? Is he in a hard-to-see-spot?
Must find Mr. Smile | 11:01 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
We have spent hours looking for Mr. Smiley face too! We could sure use a little hint. This will be the first year in years that we haven't found them all...and that would make us very sad!!

Anyone...anyone?

Marjorie Wilson | 7:23 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Will be 72 this week and still enjoying the hunt. The rest of you are amazing. I thought I could do it without help. At least I needed help with only one clue this year. Maybe, this is my finale. Also involved with a senior walking contest. It helps me to keep going with both contests.
Beddow Bunch | 7:46 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
This was our first year and we enjoyed evey hour (of the many hours and days) we spent stuck within the 20 blocks. Finally done and we'll definately look to do this next year. Even the kids (ages 4,6,7 & 10) didn't complain about the walking. They watched every inch and found some of the Salt Lake special features. I will admit that it came down to the darn smiley face laughting at us! It was great to see so many others trying to find eveything and seeing some of the same people on different days of our 20 block trek. We are complete and home resting. Thanks!
One last search | 10:01 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Okay, today was the deadline, and we spent ALL day looking for the smiley face. We are determined to find it still, on our own, just to say we did. Can anyone offer JUST A HINT since it's over anyway...we don't want to know exactly where it is. We think it was on a rock of some sort on the ground. Congrats to all those who found them all!
Not so-smiley face | 10:07 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
So sorry you didn't find it! We only found it by chance...it was HARD. Hint: It's on the ground, it looks in the picture like it's in concrete or rock, but it isn't - it's metal/bronze. And it is welded onto something round. Hope that helps and doesn't give too much away!
THANKS | 1:55 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
We feel better to know that we weren't the only ones who had a hard time! That is a great hint and doesn't give too much away, because at least we know not to look for rocks. I can't believe it's some sort of metal - the picture is tricky! Thank you so much for the clue. Guess we'll trek on out again soon to give it one last die-hard attempt.
