It seems to me that the old WAC had three ranked teams at the end of the 1994 season. (CSU, Utah and BYU.)
Lets not get ahead of ourselves. The MWC had a great week against a pac - 10 conference that is in the dumps right now excluding USC. This gets us on our road to more respect, but it is going to take about 5 or more consecutive years of better head to head records against the pac - 10 and better mwc national rankings to even begin to turn the tides.
Who has beaten the highest ranked team? Yes that's right, UNLV. Until BYU proves they can beat the elite teams, UNLV is the best team in the conference. Utah and BYU have not beaten a ranked team this year. Numbers speak!!
Congratulations to the MWC. I will ALWAYS cheer for every MWC team, whenever they play out of conference. The league still has a ways to go, but maybe, just maybe, we could get a little respect this year.
The ACC is terrible, especially when Clemson is one of their top teams, closely followed by North Carolina. The Big East is soooo bad, nothing much more needs to be said. But, they still have the BCS tie-in. Maybe this will be the year to end the foolishness of having six conferences in the BCS, instead of just making it the top ten teams in the nation. GO MWC!!
Yes UNLV beat ASU, but I remember just two weeks ago Utah smashing UNLV. Also notice that UNLV isn't getting any votes for ranking. I don't think that they are really the best team in the conference.
First criteria for claiming #1 is your won/loss record. unlv has a loss - sorry can't be #1
Yeah, some teams may have won big games, but Utah ran up the score. You don't keep your big men in all through the 4th quarter when you are destroying a team. BYU's starters were out near the beginning of the 3rd quarter.
I heard that someone thought that win for UNLV may be the biggest of their program. Look around the conference to see what other teams have accomplished and you'll see UNLV is still an infant when it comes to great defeats.
UNLV is not number one in the MWC but this proves that they are much better than people thought coming into the season. They have some winnable games coming up and have a real chance of winning eight games this year, which would be huge for this program. Maybe just maybe they could use that to start improving the program and in a couple of years be on the level of BYU, Utah and TCU. Hech they have a good recruiting base in Vegas, and their basketball program is rich in winning history, stadium is not great but not horrible and they have a good young quarterback and some young talented receivers. We'll see
In the big picture for the conference and in some ways for both Utah and BYU, the UNLV win AT ASU was more important and more influential than the BYU win over UCLA.
How can they be the best team in the conference when they have already lost in conference?
As for UNLV beating ASU congrats that was an excellent win, and it makes Utah's smashing of UNLV look that much better.
I think UNLV #1 is purposely trying to create controversy, because any reasonable person doesn't believe that. The comment should be ignored going forward.
Good Job UTES!!!
UTAH 36
USAFA 32
If UNLV is #1 then San Diego State is #2... they almost beat Notre Dame on the road... impressive. Go Aztecs!
I was thrilled to see both Arizona teams fall to MWC teams. Now if that AZ senator would lose too!!!!
Guys, are we really arguing about whether UNLV is the best team in the conference? Really? I mean, come on...
Excerpt from TSN:
Get ready for one wild round-robin for a league (Mountain West) that has surpassed the ACC and Big East. The schedule: BYU at TCU, Oct. 16; TCU at Utah, Nov. 6; BYU at Utah, Nov. 22.
So what chance does TCU have against Oklahoma the end of the month? I think they can win it, but losing by less than a TD would be great for the conference and keep TCU's BCS chances alive should they beat Utah and BYU.
As for UNLV, great win, but try and get past Nevada this season and show the MWC is really better than the Wac for a change. silly rebels.

The BCS needs to dump the Big East, it has no business getting any automatic bids. It needs to be replaced by the MWC. However, the east coast bias won't allow that to happen yet. So until then... it's the Cougs turn to crash the BCS party.
I completely agree...what gets me is that he said Utah and BYU haven't beaten a ranked opponent this year. WRONG!!! Utah beat Michigan this year. Michigan was ranked I believe 24th at that time. Fact check anyone? Oh, and by the way, great wins this week by the MWC!!!
