190 people were called. Please. Let's see what happens after the debates.
Erica | 3:15 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Chaffetz says wow. I bet he's surprised. I just wonder if he is smart enough to know that he'd better not rely on a Desi News poll.
Sally Cat | 3:16 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Who are you kidding? 'Nearly' 200 people called? Gimme a break. That 'Grand Canyon Sized Lead' is gonna shrink real fast soon Utah gets a whiff of Chaffetz immigration plan.

Gotta agree with Bennion on this one. I can only imagine those push poll calls must have sounded like.

Caller: Hello. Do you support candidate B or C?

Voter: Which one has an 'R' in front of his name?

or

Caller: Hello. Do you support candidate B or C?

Voter: I support candidate B. I wouldn't vote for that other racist freak for all the tea in-!

isn't there a law against media conducting polls in utah? i thought polls were supposed to be neutral.
Outraged | 3:34 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Where's the outrage? I'm outraged all right. I'm outraged that the Democrat in Utah's Third District has built his whole campaign around letting criminals off the hook!

Right now, if a citizen gets caught committing a non-violent crime, that citizen gets charged! But illegal aliens are let go because there is no federal prison and the states can't afford to incarcerate them all. It amazes me that those of us who want all crimes prosecuted equally are somehow considered racist!

No way will I vote for the guy who calls you a racist if you refuse to let criminal aliens off the hook. They should be held to same standard as the rest of us.
Kaptain Rob | 3:37 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
I'm a Cannon supporter who voted for Chaffetz in a no-brainer move. But you can count me in the 18%.

Vote GOP in 2010
I hear you Outraged | 3:39 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
It is outrageous. But that doesn't take away from what Jason is saying. I'm a Republican, but I can spot a snake in the grass when I see one. Lock down the borders, but let's not lose our souls.
Misty | 3:41 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
The GOP are going to blow away the Dems in every race in Utah, except in maybe the 3rd. Getting a little nervous about Jason. Ever since Corroon got elected, seems more and more Dems are sprouting up.
Dawn M. | 3:42 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
When will the GOP voters ever come around?
T-Rex | 3:44 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
See you silly Dems. This is GOP country. It don't matter if Rob Bishop wants to dump nuke waste, and Chaffetz wants round up the illegals. In Utah, what we say goes.
no brainer | 3:50 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
What's Dan Jones smoking? 60-18 Chaffetz? Not a chance. Maybe Cannon would be up 40 points, but not a nobody who pulled a lousy 20 thousand votes in the primary. The Dems got their work cut out for them in any year. But we're talking about an open seat here.
Morris the Cat | 3:50 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
I was embarrassed by Lee Benson's comments in support of Jason Chaffetz. I might still vote for him, but come on man, cut the extremist crap. We are all Republicans in this state, you don't have to make it so hard for us to support you.
CJ | 3:57 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Good, it showing that the third district voters are seeing through the partisan politic antics of the Democratic opponent. If they stuck with the turth they may be doing better.
Dawn M. | 3:55 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Bennion Spencer is going to win. You heard it here first.
Jason Miller | 4:00 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Polling is an inexact science. Voter with cell phones are not called, and it traditionally targets an older demographic of people. Even still, these numbers seem way off to me. The GOP is having a bad year and independent voters are switching over. I'm curious to see what 11/4 holds in store.
Linda in Lehi | 4:09 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
I don't know if Bennion is going to win, Dawn M. But i am a Jason supporter who switched sides. I have friends I go to school with who have 'illegal' siblings and no way do I support his plan. I lived in California for two years and if someone said that there, they'd chase him out of town.
I Went to Jason's Website | 4:11 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
And it convinced me to vote for Bennion Spencer and I'm not kidding.

Outraged | 4:13 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
"I think most people in Utah do not feel in their heart that we should round up people and put them in camps."

That's not what Chaffetz is saying either. Clearly, this guy is desperate and feels he has to lie to get ahead.

Chaffetz has proposed throwing criminals in prisons - something we do every day to our citizens who commit crimes. Yet somehow you're a racist if you want illegal aliens to be held to the same standard as citizens.

Chaffetz may want to build the prison out of cheaper materials, but it doesn't change who would be housed there - the same people we house in federal prisons now, except there would be more from the Western United States.

Embarrassed | 4:15 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
by Bennion Spencer? I'm embarrassed alright, by my own party. We used to be the party of compassion and THEY were the idiots who took us into Vietnam. Reagan won the Cold War without firing a shot. Now we have a candidate who wants to put women and children in a tent prison.

We need to realize that our ideals come before our party. We can take back the GOP, but not with this candidate.
Big Sky Marine | 4:31 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
We never wanted a liberal in our state until Schweitzer, and he's not half bad. I won't touch Obama with a ten foot pole, but on a state level sometimes the Dems can cut it.

IM | 4:35 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Chaffetz is such a FAKE! He can't seem to say anything intelligent. If you heard him on Doung Wright this past week you'd understand how foolish he is. I can't stand the thought of him being our Rep in DC.
IM | 4:36 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
And - I work with immigration attorneys all the time and laugh at Chaffetz's claims of having a "detailed plan" to solve immigration. Here's a news flash - after over 10 years of dealing with all the complications of this issue I can honestly attest that Mr. Chaffetz does NOT have a detailed plan. There are too many loopholes inwhat he's trying to push.

Don't buy in to the bumper sticker politics game he's playing.
Big Mo | 4:36 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
What I find interesting is that everyone lately has taken a position on immigration; The Sutherland Institute, the Catholic Church, even Rob Bishop called for an end to workplace raids today.

When will the LDS church come our publicly and call for an end to the hate-talk coming out of the Chaffetz camp?
lets be honest... | 5:19 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
I agree with this above...

Jason has called for a federal detention facility in the west to house federal prisoners. Only those convicted of a crime would be housed in this facility.

Federal prisoners who are not violent criminals are often released because there is no prison space to hold them. The detention facility would house those who are convicted of federal crimes whether or not these people are illegal aliens. Jason has also suggested that tent facilities similar to those in Arizona are good enough for our soldiers in Iraq and should be good enough for our federal prisoners here at home.

Jason isn't targeting anyone based on race. La Raza and Yapias don't want Jason Chaffetz elected. Why is the democrat running against him worried about what those two think?

lets be honest.. | 5:24 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
There isn't any hate-talk coming out Jason Chaffetz, in my opinion.

There are those that appear to be biased. They are going to vote for someone. Do you judge a candidate because of those that want him or her in office, or do you judge the candidate what they believe and will do and listen?
let's be honest then | 6:40 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
you Chaffetz bloggers are trying to backtrack to cover your boys backside, but its too late. He said it, not just the ones who have committed a crime. Jason's in trouble and by the change of tone in your blogs, you know it.

I think Bennion Spencer is going to win.
Madden | 7:00 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Nobody is backtracking! Too many dems are out in force trying to use headlines rather than actual positions to attack Chaffetz.

His policy isn't extreme, but the inaction of our do-nothing Congress has been extremely foolish. Democrats like Honda and Chaffetz' opponent promise more of the same.
Joe Moe | 7:00 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Matheson with such a high approval rating? This in a state that some would have us believe is full of "mindless" "sheeple" and "lemmings." Just goes to show that people are paying attention to what representatives are actually doing, not just the D or R behind their name.

The headlines reflect Jason's actual position. Two scenarios with you. 1) You know that Jason in lying and you too are lying. or, 2) You are too blinded or too foolish to know that he is lying.

The truth will set you free and sink Jason Chaffetz.

p.s. I voted for Chaffetz. Worst vote I've ever made in my life. Won't happen again.
Hey Jason | 8:24 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Paying attention here? I know you're not that smart, but even you know that this poll was fabricated by the Deseret News to change the subject from the beating you took this week. 60-18 is a joke and deep inside you know it.

Come on DN. Next time you fabricate a poll, keep it in the ballpark
No to Delta, UT internment camp | 8:46 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
I hear you Outraged,

"It is outrageous. But that doesn't take away from what Jason is saying. I'm a Republican, but I can spot a snake in the grass when I see one. Lock down the borders, but let's not lose our souls."

It's one thing to advocate deportation and another to advocate that we create internment camps. Bennion wants to secure the border, work with Canada, Mexico and other countries to stem illegal immigration. He also wants to crack down on employers who illegally employ illegal immigrants. Yet, most importantly it is racist and ignorant to suggest we should create internment camps. I'm all for deporting illegal immigrants, cracking down on employers who hire them and on securing our borders.

In addition, I believe as we are doing this we should find a way to include the majority of these illegal immigrants into the U.S. and allow them to become contributing members of society by paying lawful taxes. This is something that racists will oppose but it's what good people everywhere want.

I agree with a lot of what Chaffetz has said about immigration and how to deal with it but this comment proves he is a racist.
Rolling my eyes | 8:53 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
First of all, the DNews didn't do the polling - Dan Jones did. Asking that a poll be done by a professional (left-leaning) pollster and actually doing a poll are two different things.
And second - all you that are claiming that this poll is biased and inaccurate - aren't you the same ones that said Chris Cannon was going to win because he was ahead of Chaffetz in a Dan Jones poll by 4%?

I'm delighted that we FINALLY have a candidate who knows we need to fix legal immigration first and who is not afraid to take a stand and not waffle. He is right in saying that he represents the CITIZENS of this great country. If you want to come, come legally and be welcomed with open arms.

But - here's a news flash for Bennion Spencer, who I know is reading these boards: Immigration is NOT the top agenda item for most voters.

They will earn eternal punishmen | 8:57 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Big Mo,

"When will the LDS church come our publicly and call for an end to the hate-talk coming out of the Chaffetz camp?"

The Church doesn't need to yet but may soon have too if his comments lead to many Saints astray. Church leaders care about the eternal souls of its members and don't want them to be damned because they are led astray by political leaders like Jason Chaffetz but at the same time the Church wants to avoid becoming involved in politics. At present Chaffetz comments haven't gained a foothold or caused members of the Church to become extremist or racist.

I believe fundamentally that his comments reflect a small segment of society in general and an even smaller segment of Church membership. If that were to change then the First Presidency and Quorum of Twelve would have to issue a proclamation denouncing internment camps.

If Church leaders begin to sense that a substantial percentage of members of the Church have ceased to strive with the Lord then they will speak out but I believe that the Church supports free agency and the right of wicked members to vote for the wicked and earn their eternal reward.
Thousands? Really? | 9:12 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Are there really thousands of unregistered voters in utah county? And Bennion Spencer and his staff of one got them all registered? Maybe he should stick to writing - fiction, that is.
Independent Utahn | 9:28 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
There are only two "Other" ballot-qualified candidate in the 1st Congressional District race -- the Constitution Party's Kirk Pearson and the Libertarian Party's Joseph Buchman.

There are only two "Other" ballot-qualified candidate in the 2nd Congressional District race -- the Constitution Party's Dennis Emery and the Libertarian Party's Mathew Arndt.

There is only one "Other" ballot-qualified candidate in the 3rd Congressional District race -- the Constitution Party's Jim Noorlander.

Reporter Bernick and/or pollster Dan Jones owes us an explanation as to why these names were not included in the polls.

Maybe in this year of the declining Republican brand, the establishment doesn't want the sheeple to know that they have options other than voting for the incumbent regime.
Independent Utahn | 9:31 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
Make that Lee Davison and/or Dan Jones owes us an explanation.
Mrs. Bennett | 11:57 p.m. Sept. 12, 2008
There is no way the Deseret News can tell me that 60% of people support Jason Chaffetz. I attend church services in Orem and the article on his immigration policy was all anyone could talk about. Even my most ardent Republican family and friends were shaking their heads. I'm not sure whom they were calling for this poll, but it was not anyone that I know.

The church sends our sons and daughters to serve in the mission field all throughout Latin America. My son served in Guatemala. And here at home we have a young, ambitious politician advocating intolerance against immigrants. I for one have grown tired of hearing Mr Chaffetz say that he is upholding the law by deporting people and labeling immigrants as criminals. It is the worst kind of opportunism, the kind that harms others to advance your purpose.

I will not support Mr Chaffetz in November and quite frankly, do not know anyone who is.

TJ | 12:03 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008
You bleeding heart liberals are the reason our country is in trouble. You won't be happy until Utah has another 5 million Illegals here. Perhaps if crimes are committed against you it would be a differant story. I guess Republican and Conservative are two different things.
lets be honest.. | 12:16 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I am surprised at the negative and distorted press lately re: Jason Chaffetz. I am supporting Jason, it is time the truth about his position be supported as well.

Why would a California Representative, one that is sponsoring a bill with Senator Clinton to spend $600,000,000 on immigrants to this country, target Jason Chaffetz with information provided to him by La Raza?
Unfounded Attacks | 12:48 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I'm surprised by the amount of ignorance being expressed in this forum. Those who rail against Mr. Chaffetz, either truly don't understand his position or are blatantly lying through their teeth because they a) want to see BS elected, or b) are still licking their wounds regarding their boy CC's defeat in the primaries.

We know La Raza put Rep Honda up to critisizing Mr. Chaffetz. They told him a lie about Mr. Chaffetz's position and Rep Honda, without doing any fact checking of his own, levied a public attack against Mr. Chaffetz, repeating that lie about his actual position on immigration.

Now we have individuals who repeat that lie in this forum attacking Mr. Chaffetz because as I mentioned before that they either are complicit in helping BS make political hay, or are ignorant of the truth because they choose not to do any of their own research before taking pen to hand and trashing an honorable man. Either way, the Dan Jones poll indicates the masses have chosen not to drink your koolaid, but instead are committed to supporting a man who has a strong desire to fix a real problem that is currently plaguing our nation.
Life Long Republican | 2:13 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008
First Chaffetz, then Palin. Two beauty pageants. We will come to regret both of these choices. Both tell constituents what they want to hear, regardless of practicalities. Astounding how well Chaffetz has been able to pull the wool over Utah County voters.
RE: Joe Moe | 2:59 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Your take is way off, Matheson has the supposed 'big lead' because people are NOT paying attention and he has name recognition. He's nothing but a big time LIB and Obama backer. He's done nothing for Southern Utah and it's crime that Southern Utah and SLC are in the same congressional district.
no one to vote for | 6:26 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I'm a Republican opposed to Chaffetz, and not opposed to voting for the right Democrat. And I think a Democrat could win in the third District. But the Democratic Party has shown over and over that they don't know how to win. Spencer has been disappointingly partisan and uninspiring. Chaffetz is so beatable, but not this year, not by this Democratic candidate.

We need a "none of the above" ballot option, and if "none of the above" wins, we would have to start over with new candidates. None of the previous candidates would be allowed to run. I think this year "none of the above" would win.
John | 7:24 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Jimmy Matheson probably is 10 points higher than he would have been if he had gone to the Democrat convention. There he wold have been seen with his pal Nancy Pelosi and maybe some of the media would have asked why he supports her so much when he claims his views are different. Instead he was hiding here in Utah trying to disassociate himself from the looney left that is the Democrat party today.

Jimmy Matheson talks one way in Utah running for election, but turns into Pelosi's pet poodle once he gts back to DC to start voting.

Utah deserves better.
lets be honest.. | 7:29 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008
"With his extreme position on immigration, this campaign is going to be a war."

Bennion, your idea is to have them pay a fine on the way to becoming citizens.

Jason is not saying round everyone up and lock them up. He just wants a place to put those that have court orders & judgements against them, which are now just being let go.

His number one goal, Fix legal immigration.

"There are millions of people from around the world who seek to legally become a citizen of the United States of America. Unfortunately, the system is failing. Last year the Wall Street Journal stated the current green-card backlog includes applicants who face a 22-year wait time. This doesnt work for anybody. We need to implement the leadership necessary to fix this problem and appropriate the money needed to thoroughly process applicants in a timely manner. Until legal immigration works, we will continue to have major problems."

from jason for congress
Gail McEndree | 7:54 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I've watched this for many months now. I voted for Jason during the Primary because change is good. I am really feeling bad about that vote now.
I've paid attention to the supporters of Jason just as some bloggers have suggested. It is eery how right those bloggers are.
Jason's supporters seem to be of two types. The first seem very slick and sophisticated. I would guess they are campaign workers. They seem to give the official line.
The second group seem to be average Jason Chaffetz supporters. What is interesting is that these two groups do not agree.
The second group have for a few months now said how the tent facilities in the desert would be for all illegal aliens. I constantly hear the number of 20,000,000 illegal aliens. These people worry me that they want to put 20,000,000 Hispanic people in concentration camps.
Of course the official campaign denies this but why would his supporters make such claims? It tells me Jason says one thing to the media and a completely different to his supporters privately. He is telling the racists that they get what they want with him in Congress.
I'm voting Democrat in this race.
To Chaffetz | 8:31 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008
There is no reason to campaign, you are a Republican and that is all that matters to people, especially in Utah County. By the way, when are concentration camps for illegal immigrants going to get started? I'm excited for that.
