Perhaps you could reduce baseball a little more since many of these kids play in
summer leagues. Baseball doesn't get much attendance because it isn't
that fun to watch. Also, please get rid of cross country all together.

Lets get rid of all sports...turn them all over to club and corporate
sponsors...like in other countries and start really focusing in on education and
while we are at it let make sure we get rid of music, math,drama etc...because
no one comes to watch those events..either...put it to the communities not by 15
people that really wish they could be fishing..

Don't mess with cross country. It's the one sport that where kids
particpate for the right reasons. If the UHSAA had any integrity in this area,
they would start with football and start with endownment games. But
they're not going to give up anything.

Reducing the baseball season from 22 games to 20 is ridiculous. The schools in
Vegas currently play a 35 game schedule which is a meaningful baseball season.
Cutting the season by two games would be pointless for the fans and players to
even get excited about. Plus more baseball kids would focus more on club ball
and eventually the baseball season would disappear.

x-country because it is the sport that Utah actually does best at the national

The person who said lets get rid of all sports. If you get rid of all sports
then good luck funding alot of your programs. If you notice the sport that cost
the most to do football also brings in more money then what you are interested
in donating to your local high school. So why don't we get rid of school in
general then. Yeah we all know how community teams are ran dad coaches his kids
team and he is the star. We already have youth programs in most communities.
Also I would agree that they need to reduce baseball games to 16 just because
those kids play a ton in the summer and even in some places the fall.

Club sports with corporate sponsors is NOT the way to go. There are some sports
that operate on a 50,000 budget and it would be impossible to function.

Cross country is a sport that all can participate in. It has fewer injuries
than football or basketball and less liability. The contests are very few as it
is. It makes more sense to not cut sports at all as they help students in more
ways than just academics.

Once again picking on the lower classifications. Who cares right? I am sick of
the sports in this state, cutting games????!!! Are you serious. Is cutting 2
games really going to help?? They need to add more games if anything! Go to
geographical regions for the season and then enrollment numbers for the state
tourneys! Easy soloution!

What a joke other states are letting kids play and Utah wants to stop them from
playing. In some states they play 40 basketball games and you want to only
allow them to play 18. LET THE KIDS PLAY!!!

Every sport should be reduced more, and more needs to be done to limit offseason
competition. Kids who play sports these days don't have a life.

You don't need to reduce the number of baseball games. You could actually
increase them and solve another problem. We all know baseball is the only sport
you can participate in while taking a nap. Solve the high school sleep
deprivation issue at the same time!!

Why would 4A-5A get more opportunities to play more games than the smaller
schools? Because it is closer? Excuse me if I am wrong, but gas is gas and
time out of school is time out of school. So if you penalize one group, it
should be the same for ALL groups. Heaven forbid that the precious 4A/5A
schools get to follow the same rules as everyone else for once!

why is basketball not being cut in the 4A/5A. At my school i'm the
wrestling coach and the basketball team misses more school than the wrestling
team. @0 minutes here and 30 minutes here adds up plus in wrestling we duel our
region teams once, in basketball they do it twice and we have a 8 team region.

Just because you could care less about baseball doesn't mean that you just
get rid of it! There are MANY kids out there that LOVE the game and go to
school soley because of it. We don't ask you to come to the games so stay
away and don't worry about missing out on your "Sleep" Get a
clue and learn a little about the game I am sure that you will come to
understand just how interesting every piece of that game can be. And actually,
I don't play baseball, I just love watching it!

We need to limit the number of kids in a family. This will increase the per
student spending and save our sports. I think every family should be allowed
one child, two if the pay extra. That will also reduce class sizes. China is

Good Luck. If it's not sports it will be something else. Just a thought,
what sport has the most Utah athletes participating in at the professional
level? Right the sleep deprivation program. Interesting. Let's stop playing
that. What programs do we have the most kids get life-long injuries from? Chess
Club? The answer isn't cut games. UHSAA should cut travel with smaller
geographic regions. Playing on Saturdays. Combined trips with boy & girls
and avoid one bus going one way and the other going in the opposite direction.

Why would you get rid of sports... they bring in great revenue and although
education is important, students who participate in sports learn valuble lessons
like teamwork, communication, dedication and hard work. Getting rid of
X-Country is stupid as well. I ran X-Country in high school before I even knew
what it was. I think that if most people actually watched a X-Country meet,
they would probably find it very enjoyable. I'm not saying it would get
more attendance than football or basketball, but it is actually very
entertaining!

We don't want boy/girl buses here. It is too much work for the coaches. I
remember in Texas we had that and unless you have great coaches I wouldn't
do it. As a male teenager I loved it.

and smell you�re ..... An easy solution to baseball
expenses would be to play dbl headers. You could even have the schools play on
neutral fields if your worried about home field advantage. Just like you guys to
snap to judgment and not think it through again!!!

The problem lies in the powers to be running the state education system. Utah is nearly always DEAD LAST in money spent per student in education. That includes sports. Parents & students that haven't lived elsewhere or no any different, don't realize we are getting screwed out of a better education....and hence, sports. I've lived in several states, and I know the difference. It starts at the top.

The number of games played doesn't need to be lowered, just put a limit on
the number of miles a team can travel each season. This would force teams to
play the schools in their own areas or go to more tournaments rather than single
game trips. A team usually gains more from playing in tournaments anyway.

Cut all sports? Are you kidding? Anybody that knows anything knows that sports
are what keeps half of the kids in school any way! It's a proven fact that
athletics help students achieve better grades. Many students stay eligible just
so they can play, otherwise they would be lost. GET A CLUE!!!!

For teams traveling out of state to invitationals, etc, you'd hope
that's money that comes directly from their own budget. Only problem with
that, those schools are probably asking for budget money to cover those trips.
If it's going to those schools, then it's coming out of an overall
budget, which is affecting everybody....including education.

Speech is a sport. The definition of a sport is a competition, so your example
of a chess club being a sport is correct.
Athletics are needed for a well-balanced education. But they aren't actually eliminating anything, just reducing the length of seasons and number of games.

who are making cracks about baseball, let me clue you in on something. There are
more college scholarships available for kids who play baseball. The odds of your
star football player getting a next level scholarship is next to nothing. Very
few kids get to play basketball, therefore very few get their school paid for.
There are countless oportunities for the baseball kids to move on and play at
the next level with school paid for. If your kid has skills on the baseball
field, the odds of a scholarship are much better than any other sport. This goes
for the softball gals also.

Whoever gave said negative about baseball isn't a sports fan. Baseball is
lacking in support from parents and the community in general. It's
unfortunate. I played baseball.....rare to find a relatively large crowd.
Therefore, no ticket revenue, which means, it's probably a money loser.
Schools rely on football to bring in the revenue.

is a joke. We already have track. It is redundant. If you want to seperate
the two, them please move anything longer than the 800 meters to cross country.
There was nothing more pathetic than having to watch the 3000 meter run at the
state meet for each class boys and girls before the 110 meter hurdles. It was
noon before the real races even began. Do you know how boring it is to watch?

To say basketball and football are the only sports that make money is so far
from reality it makes me wonder just how intelligent you really are when it
comes to high school sports. Football Example: By the time you shell out $8,000
+ budgeted for football each year, $5,000 + for all coaches, $1,500 + for
busses, $2,500 + for home officials, $5,000 + for staff (police, ambulance,
chain crew, announcer etc.). So, $22,000 + a season is about as CHEAP AS IT
GETS for a 4-A, 5-A school. Not to mention insurances, fee waivers, custodial
etc. This is all out of school funds for the large majority of football
programs. Not too many schools come close to covering those costs with 4 or 5
home games. Thank God for fundraisers!

UHSAA always amazes me. To you members of the UHSAA: For the sake of the all
mighty Dollar you are going to cut games for the students that love
sports.{pretty darn cheezy on your part} The last time I checked the kids that
play these sports{all of them} love the game they play and for you do gooders to
take games away is absurd at best. What do you want them to do go party or do
drugs or other things, with the free time you give them. Your plan is for your
[DOLLAR BENNIFIT] and it does nothing to help the students. After all it is the
best for the Students that should count. ANOTHER FINE MESS THE UHSAA WILL BRING
UPON THE STUDENTS. cheezy!!!!!!!

By cutting 4-A, 5-A baseball back 2 games here's what you'll save.
Let's assume you cut 1 home and 1 away game for JV and Varsity each. You
save $200 in umpires and $250 in bussing. So congratulations you save a school
a whopping $450 a year and cheat the kids. Do you really expect us with
knowledge to think for one second that this proposal has merit. I'll give
you $500 out of my fundraisers to keep my two games. You can spend the extra
$50 on more bottled water for your staff.

should be conserned about this stupid planning. Does the UHSAA have nothing
beter to do than make things worse on Students and all the Schools in their
respective classifacations? and to you UHSAA members I am ashamed of you for
putting the filthy lucure {Dollar} ahead of the students.. It is the Students
that count and no matter how much Money you might save you will hurt the
Students and the Atheletic programs of the Schools involved. This will only
serve Lucifer. Cut somewhere else maybe your own salery but please leave the
Atheletic programs for the students alone. Increase the amount of games dont cut
them these kids love sports and the compitition involved with them. and I do

The Board members of the UHSAA are hard at it again by golly, cant help but
wonder how they do it year after year. Lets see, last year dividing the
Classifacations up {Unfairly}. Now this year taking away games form Students.
You have got to wonder about the THINK TANK of the UHSAA!! They sure like to
make life hard on all of the Student players and thier respective Schools. to
the members of the UHSAA. ITS THE STUDENTS FIRST ABOVE ALL!!!{not the dollar}
get it? ITS THE STUDENTS FIRST!!! Dont create a monster by taking games away
these kids love sports and their fans also...

Sports programs have brought this proposal upon themselves. Since Baseball has
been used a lot in this thread, let's use if for an example. Having the
Freshman team get out of school at noon for a home game so they can shag balls
from batting practice has turned some people against baseball. Administrators
(Superintendents) only see the missed time in class. You add extra travel to
out of state tournaments where students miss two days of school and what do you
think an administrator is going to do. The logical thing to them is to cut
games. If programs would police themselves and try to keep students in school
more, this proposal would never have come to light.

All schedules and tournaments MUST be signed off by the athletic director
and/or principals. And any trip over 150 miles in or out of state must be
signed off by approved by the UHSAA and in most cases with the school district
as well. Which means these programs such as baseball have full approval of
their supervisors in regards to time missed from class and travel. Nice try
though! You sound like a typical school board member with little or no
knowledge and just wants to make a blanket statement with little or no facts to
back it up.

I have a girl and a boy that are involved in high school athletics. My
experience is that most of the kids who are in these programs are highly
motivated and do well academically anyway. For most of the rest of them, sports
helps motivate them to stay on top of their classes so they don't become
ineligible to play. It is a win-win as far as the kids are concerned. I have
been to out-of- state tournaments for baseball in April and faced teams that
have already played 30+ games. To further reduce the number of games turns our
programs into a joke compared to other states. If our kids are willing to work
hard at something--anything--the parents, the legislators, and the UHSAA need to
figure out a way to support them.

It's there own fault, my son plays baseball for a 4A school, they get out
of school at 2:05 and have roughly 1/2 hour to get dressed, take a few swings in
the cage and get on the bus to travel to a region game, he got released from his
4th period class about 1/2 earl on days where the travel was a little longer.
also a couple of years ago the sports teams had that for there 4th period so not
to miss as much school, but the school districts no longer allow there team
sport to take there powerlifting or pe for that period anymore,

i do agree that if the uhsaa is worried about travel, maybe they should of done
a better job with the reallignment there are alot of better solutions to travel

If a freshman is allowed to miss class to shag balls for a 4:00pm game then that
school has many more problems than a baseball program/coach. Unless the field
is off campus, say about 100 miles or so, I think the freshman would be able to
walk to the ball field after the final class no problem. Again another post
that sounds like a school board member, grasping at ridiculous
"what-ifs" Please post the name of the school(s) that do this if it
is happening. I'm of no authority and bet I can solve this problem with
one phone call, I don't need to cut games from schedules to accomplish
something so small. Again, Good try!

I was at the state track meet. I believe the reason they delayed the 3k run was
because of the Javlin accident with the reporter. They should have ran 1
through 3A together then 4 and 5A. This was pathetic to watch. figure at least
15 minutes for everyone to finish the race add this 10 times and you are well
over two hours. At the very least please move this event to cross country
where it belongs.

You would think the school would protest against things and try to get that
changed. All school want to win a championship or 1st place in all sports even
Drama and Cross Country. Its a great accplishment to make it to a championship
games. How is reducing games going to make things better? Baseball/softball
season is the shortest season and yet your going to reduce the season? Humbb.
And about the "its your own fault" writer.. Should you child be on the
baseball team if his grades are not good enough for play? Most schools do not
let kids out of school if their grades are not up to par?? I have played all 4
years of high school when I was a freshman only far away games we got out early
and it was the last class, and we never had shaggers on the varsity team we did
it ourselves. So maybe your kid needs to be water boy so he doesnt have to leave
class early? Really someone enlighten me how cutting games is going to help them
study more?? Cause that is going to make the uproar even worse??!!
