Jeff, BYU is now 1-3 in Seattle now. Not 1-4
YSMACK | 1:03 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Jeff,

Check your facts. BYU is not 1-4 against UW all time. BYU is 3-4. They won in 85, 99 and 08.

Although Locker was impressive, it seemed that his teammates gave him all the time in the world to scramble about. Were they bigger than our defensive men? Locker certainly overthrew his targets an awful lot, unlike Hall.

UW deserved to play an overtime game. I'd be curious to see how the BYU coach would handle it if the situation was reversed. Locker celebrated and did not show anyone up. He did not address the crowd, the umpires or the Cougars. I've seen more celebration on a sack or a first down. The call was ridiculous. Maybe the Huskies still don't win but they deserved an overtime.

YSMACK learn how to read...Jeff didn't say that BYU was 1-4 all-time against Washington. He said they were now 1-4 AT Seattle
RE: YSMACK | 8:39 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
You should check your facts. Although BYU did win those games in 1999 and 1985, they were in Provo. The article specifically states the record while playing at Washington.
Anonymous | 9:35 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Mendenhall's words say it all. "I didn't see it." If you didn't see it, how could it be excessive? There was no showboating. Locker did not address the crowd, the Cougars or the officials. It was just emotion after a great drive. The Dawgs were robbed.
BlueBoy | 9:49 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Apparently, the coaches weren't impressed (respectful) because they never put anyone to spy on him to keep him from getting all those yards up the middle. I'm amazed at how slow BYU coaches are to adjust during a game. This has been a problem every year lately. UCLA is definitely licking their chops. BYU had better make leaps and bounds between weeks 2 and 3 (the kind that are generally seen between 1 and 2), or this Washington win will be for naught.
true blue | 10:13 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
This should make the match up in Provo interesting. Mark May is wrong he didn't just toss it over his shoulder he threw it very high. And I disagree with all you Utah fans that say if the call would have been on us we would be crying too. I think if BYU had lossed that game like that we would have definetely mentioned the call but be more concerned with Unga fumble on the 1 and our lack of defensive presence.
Anonymous | 11:15 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
they weren't robbed. BYU made a great play. period. People think that one call can change the outcome of the game. a 35 yard field goal is not hard to make. if the extra 15 yards psyched out the washington kicker (perkins) then they need a new kicker. Jan Jorgensen and the rest of the defense made a great play and a very timely one at that.
Anonymous | 11:30 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
It's irrelevant whether you think it was excessive celebration or not... the rules clearly state that after scoring if the player tosses the ball high into the air it is a penalty, thus it was called. Regardless of the penalty, UW still should have been able to convert the extra point. BYU simply made the final play and UW didn't.
Re: Anonymous 8:18 | 11:33 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
The rule might be ridiculous, but the call wasn't. The referree simply followed the rule book.
Not the only bad call | 11:42 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
On 3rd and long on the final drive, Dulan was tackled from behind (clearly a holding penalty) when Locker completed the pass for a 1st down. Had that penalty been called, maybe UW would never have been in a position to have a celebration penalty called on them.
We Need MORE | 11:42 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
I am a huge Cougar fan but that was simply a terrible call that 99% of BYU fans would have been furious over. I love the fact that we finally won an out of conference game on the road but let's get real here - if we want to be a BCS bowl team that game NEVER should have come down to that call. All the national media is focusing on how terrible and unfair the call was. For those who didn't see the game it looks like the refs handed BYU the game. In a regular season this would be a great win no matter how it ended. But we can't hope to squeeze into a BCS bowl game. I expect we may actually drop a spot or two from the fallout of this call. UWA is not viewed as a good team and yet it was widely viewed that we stole a win. We need to beat UCLA handily to take away the impression that we are not a diminant 2-0 team. Fresno, Utah, Eastern Carolina, BSU and TCU all appear stronger than we do right now. Ws are just not enough this season!!
Bill | 11:52 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Hate to strain at gnats but the article says it moved the kick back to the 35 yard line when it of course was the 25- making it a 35 yard kick.
To Anonymous 9:35 a.m | 11:57 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
The NCAA manual specifically cites throwing the ball into the air as an example of a post-touchdown celebration penalty. It mentions nothing about requiring addressing the crowd or opponents or the officials. It stands by itself.

Mendenhall did not see it, but the refs did. As the ref said, it was not a judgement call. The action required a penalty be called per the manual. Both Locker and Willingham both own up to it and admit it was a valid call. Why can't you and others like you do the same?

By the way, I think it is a dumb rule. If we don't want it called, it should be removed from the manual.

This individual is dead on! I too was at the game, and although it is a "W". The Cougars better make some significant adjustments. UCLA is so anxious to spoil the Cougs Quest. Taller, faster receivers...yikes! The Cougs DO need to prepare like crazy. This game will be interesting.
Gretkzy | 1:24 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Locker will have more disciplilne as the years go by. right now he doesn't have the appropriate discipline for a full 60 minutes of football. max hall is amazing. i was not a fan of his much last year but having watched him against a perennial powerhouse team he was mechanical, methodical and totally cool under pressure. no excessive emotion and calm cool and collected. it's what won the game in the end for the cougs. i feel bad for willingham. he's a good man. i noticed notre dame could barely beat SDSU on their home turf.
Ouija | 4:11 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Sitting in the stands amongst all the "DAWG" fans, I was informed at various points througout the game that PAC-10 officials are never wrong. After that penalty on Locker, I agreed with them! Much to their displeasure of course.
hi Bill | 4:19 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
I also hate to strain at gnats, but they actually moved it to the 18 yard line making it a 35 yard kick (ball is kicked 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage).
Richard Benson | 7:40 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
People, it's only a game! It is only for entertainment! 100 years from now, no one will care! Some of you on both sides are taking this way to personal! The success of your life is not measured by how well your favorite football team does! There really are things more important than football! For myself, a really good pizza is high the the list of most important things right after getting my home teaching done!
Seattle | 11:39 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
It was a very tough call but BYU finally made a play to win the game. Why should BYU apologize for a poor call by Pac 10 officials?

Still, the Huskies are a very good team and BYU did not look like a top 20 team in playing them. The defense must do better or the BCS will never risk having BYU blown out in one of their bowls.

BYU is fighting to be a consistant national power but they are not there yet. Still, my congratulations on winning a road game. They deserve credit for this win even by the close margin that it came to.
Kevin | 12:29 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
If you look at the first two BYU touchdowns with regard to "rule 9" - both were excessive celebrations according to the letter of the law. Neither was called. It's hypocritical to say that it's a good call when it's not enforced throughout the game. Obviously this was a ridiculous call. Every major media outlet (except those in the SLC area) are railing against the idiocy of the call. It's too bad most of you can't see the truth through your partisan views.
brother Austad | 7:34 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
I am the 2nd counselor in the sunday school presidency. I think way too much is being made of this call/no call. Have you done your home teaching yet brethren? Get a perspective on what really matters. Take the kids to the park or out for a pizza. Hey tonight is Family Home Evening.
Cali Coug | 10:04 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Kevin, Kevin, Kevin...the Cougs did drop the ball in the "dead zone". After a touchdown the "dead zone" is the end zone...all of the end zone. Udub lost, you sound a little bitter...bring on next week!
FastAgingDawg | 11:03 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Gretzky...Locker lacks discipline? You may not know a lot about the young man...your sample size is perhaps too small to reach that conclusion. Few college players have the kind of discipline that Locker does...he is a great kid...not only the most talented on the team...but he comes to camp in the best condition (by a long shot)...spends more time in the film room than anybody...spends time in the community and with the disadvantaged...the list is long...discipline is not a problem...but is he perfect...no.

BTW - Really Bad rule, reasonable call but still should not have been made...but it was...such is life. Good game though. Good luck Cougars against UCLA...and beyond.
byu alumnus | 11:50 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
1. The call was right, the rule is dumb.

2. UW had a chance to tie, and didn't.

3. BYU is lucky Locker can't throw the long ball, or we would have lost this one.

GO DEFENSE!!! We need you sharp next week!
zoobie 56 | 12:00 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
I've always hated the "Celebration Rule." I have no doubt had Max Hall done the same thing a flag would have been thrown. Locker is a great quarterback with unusual running skills. Once his passing skills reach the level of his running skills he will be very difficult for anyone to stop.
We know | 1:30 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
how Bronco would have responded. The fumble vs TCU, and the call made from the sidelines at BC are situations where BYU lost at the last second, and Bronco was very classy about it. I do feel like I was cheated out of this game, but BYU made the play they needed to. There is no more to say about it than that.

So pizza is what really matters? Maybe we should watch our waistlines instead. The Cougars rule!! A game at LES makes for a really nice family activity. Try it sometime.

If Sorenson had to kick a 35 yarder, it would be like walking the dog.

The holding against Ian Dulan on the final drive was the worst hold I've ever seen. I was at the game. The whole stadium saw the hold and there was literally a collective groan from everyone in the stadium when it happened - because it was so blatant and right in the middle of the field. The ref was right there and didn't call it. If anything, the celebration penalty was a make-up call by Pac 10 refs who didn't think it would affect the outcome of the game.

i agree! ian dulan is a great football player! & he rocks !!!!! :)
