BYU football: Big block for Cougars

Sure was nice to see Fui get that touchdown. He deserves more carries. He looked like a clone of Unga on that play. Remember when we had both Luke and McDonald-Ashworth? Teams couldn't key on just Luke because M-A was also a great talent, until he got injured--which had a lot to do with the closer games later in Crowton's first season.

If the BYU coaches could figure out how to get both Unga and Fui involved together more, our running game would be unstoppable. Then Hall's passing could become phenomenal with so much emphasis by defenses against the dual run threat.

When is Chambers going to get some receiver work? He looks like someone who could make Collie look like a "subdivision" player. Guess the system is too complex for this freshman. Having two receiving threats on the field at the same time should open one of them up, while making the running game of a two-headed monster even more potent, and making Pitta even more of a threat (already the best we have in receiving so far this year).

BYU has enough offensive talent that is should never lose another game this year (bar key injuries).

I can not believe how the media were so against the celebration call, it is in the rule books as a penalty if you through the ball into the air or spike the ball after a TD. The players know what the rules are and the quarterback was stupid for violating the rules. I also do not understatnd why any Ute fan would belittle BYU for not beating a PAC10 team on the road because Utah has not beaten a PAC10 team in a PAC10 stadium in many years. UCLA will not have a PAC10 crew officiating the BYU game next week. BYU 3-0. Go Cougars.
Linus | 10:19 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Two things: 1) The broadcast crew was as partisan as the officiating crew. Their chosen replays and commentary covered up UW infractions and they tried to cast doubt on BYU accomplishments. They kept showing only a close-up shot of Locker's celebration that made it look like a modest little flip over his shoulder. But we had family in the stadium. What everyone in the stadium saw was that Locker threw the ball "high in the air," (which is exactly what is specifically forbidden in the rules), and several officials flagged it immediately and simultaneously.
2) PAC-10 refs did the job they are expected to do. BYU's defense would have been much better had it not been for all the illegal "holds" that gave UW unfair offensive success. Even our womenfolk spotted the illegal holding. Just for fun, go on ESPN.COM and look at their photo of Jorgensen being held even while he is blocking the kick. It's a great picture and so telling.

Aren't we glad that our two major football powers are yet undefeated? Each has scraped out a narrow win against storied programs. Let us joy together!

Good wins for both teams, though I don't think the Blue Bloods will always have a get out of jail free card, someday it will expire.
just too funny | 10:47 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Wow, over 300 comments on the BYU game and fewer than 50 on utah's game. The Michigan game didn't even get that many comments. Kind of tells ya something, doesn't it little brother yewties?

The celebration penalty on Locker for throwing the ball in the air after the TD was legit. 'Bout time the Pac10 officials called a penalty on Washington. KSL Sports showed the paragraph from the NCAA rules that specifically mentions throwing the ball in the air is a celebration penalty.

It was ugly at times but it was a win and that's what matters. We should have 2 more TD's though: Collie's drop in the endzone (he's still rusty) and Unga didn't cover the ball with both hands when he was crossing the goal line. How could he forget to do that?

GO COUGARS!!!

Lucky. They're not too good.
To Ultimate Zoob | 10:59 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
I see how that BYU education helped you with your spelling. Offense not offence Ty not Tye don"t not dont defense not defence and you kitty kats complain about the Ute fans this all was in one paragraph.
The Truth | 11:21 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
All you BYU fans who keep saying Washington's first penalty was on Locker with :02 left, please check your box score and see UW was flagged 4 times in the game.

Also, no one asked, but UW's Devin Harris, who one Y fan on here gloated about being sent to the hospital, is OK, thankfully. Signing out from Seattle, WA. The Truth.
C,mon already | 11:24 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Even Ty Willingham acknowledged that it was the right call.... "It's unfortunate, but it's one that they almost have to call. It really should be a no-call, but it's one that they have to call when they see it," said Willingham.

I would have loved to have seen an overtime game, but like any game, you have to learn to play within the parameters of the rules. Besides, it's about time the PAC 10 officials didn't blatantly hose a non PAC 10 team. I'm pretty sure Oklahoma was pretty stoked to see Washgington lose this one.

On a side note, did you see how many injuries there were to UW players? Was it bad conditioning or did BYU really just beat the snot out of a "more physical" PAC 10 team.
Classy responses please | 11:30 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Hope everyone gets a chance to read these quotes in an article in The Seattle Times

"It's unfortunate, but it's one that they almost have to call," said Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham. "It really should be a no-call, but it's one that they have to call when they see it.

AND

Locker said UW players had been told that the rule would be a point of emphasis this season.

"I was kind of disappointed in myself for doing that," he said. "I've never done anything like that in the past. I wasn't trying to show anybody up by doing it. That's not what I'm about."

A UW official said no protest was planned, pointing out that the rule is in the book and was simply enforced.

And as the Huskies glumly noted later, the penalty might have been a footnote had Perkins made the kick. Instead, BYU crashed the middle and left side of the line to get penetration, with defensive end Jan Jorgensen getting official credit for the block, giving the Cougars (2-0) their 12th straight victory.

I'm guessing they aren't crying the conspiracy game in Seattle - I guess that is up to the BYU Haters
Dohadudes | 11:39 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Remember 84 - looked like it was going down the tubes and a guy named Morrel made an impossible play to save a game at the Hawaii 1 yard line and ultimately won a national championship. We may look back on this in the same way as we are today - a great play which may have saved a season. Looking forward to the next game.

BYU got called for the same penalty Locker did.
Husky with Kid at BYU | 11:48 a.m. Sept. 7, 2008
BYU should have refused the penalty.
That is what a stand-up program should have done

to:Team down south = luck | 9:07 a.m.

Tell us more about Luck. Beating a weak Michigan team?

Our special teams came through. Second time in three games.

Are you calling what special teams accomplish lucky?

Hey, didn't TUN have an extra point blocked off Lucky Louie's foot last week from the Worst BCS team in the country who barely squeaked out a win against Miami at Ohio yesterday.

TUN are just barely better that University of Ohio.

Let get rid of all of the special teams plays that make a difference: negate Louie Sakoda's 4 field goals against the worst BCS team in the nation you guys lose by 10.

Negate the blocked kick yesterday, BYU goes to overtime (everyone saying Willinghamd would have gone for two... Lucker score on 3rd and goal... Going for two would have been stupid with his job on the line.)

Nope, about time for TUN to realize we owned you the two past years, and nothing is changing this year.

BYU is just the better team, better program.

CRY, whine, gnash teeth... BYU has and is the better program.

Eye for leg is more like it | 12:03 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Same call; just a slightly different reaction... BYU acted like they'd just beaten the best team in the country as the whole team stormed the field. I was waiting for Bronco to be soaked in Gatorade. Way to act like you'd been there before; oh wait, the never had won on the road in a non-conference game since Bronco took over. Way to go, guys!
Shelby | 12:07 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
ESPN is running the footage over and over with the final conclusion: "BYU steals the win."
vaase | 12:11 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008

It doesn't matter now tome if the Y loses anymore games but to close with a bang of greatness come Nov. 22nd
re:Danno | 12:14 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Agreed,

The time for the media to jump all over that rule was when it was implemented, and when the officials said it would be a point of emphasis.

The horse is already out of the barn.

Makes all the haters sound like a bunch of crybabies.

to: BYU-Haters and media. Man-Up like the Washington team and Coach Willingham and stop your whining. Time to forget about the game, grow up, get a job, and get an apartment. Football is a man's game, it's about winning and losing, accepting responsibilty, being accountable, etc.

Feel free to keep making the whiney, sissy posts. None of you ever learned the lesson on the field.
I cant beileve it | 12:14 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
BYU wins!!!!!! Utah is still better...... That is why Utes still wins almost half the games they play against BYU.
To: Husky with Kid at BYU | 12:19 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Have you ever seen a team decline a penalty like that? Do you watch football?
Re-Anonymous :11:58 | 12:24 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Byu might have a better Offense (or Perhaps not). Utah has a better Defense and Special Teams hands down.
BYU players | 12:25 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
I'm a true blue BYU fan. BYU celebrated because they hadn't won in how long on the road against the BCS? A long time. Fans are correct that BYU defense did look slow. Esp. in our weakest area: defensive backfield, we were getting beat by the long passes. If Locker had a more accurate arm we would have been losing and the whining over the blocked kick. We didn't look Top 25 yesterday, we need to get ready because you don't think the offensive coordinator for our next game has a chip on his shoulder? Our defense needs to pick it up. Overall this year they look less aggressive and slower overall.
dohadudes | 12:27 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Would rather steal a win then lose. I don't think you get a choice to decline a dead ball foul.
RE: Anonymous | 12:30 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Luck is beating a horrible PAC-10 team, that finished 4-9 last season with only 2 wins in conference, by a blocked PAT in the last second 'aided' by a ridiculous unsportsmanlike penalty. Luck is John Beck scrambling and heaving up a pass with his eyes closed hoping someone will catch it. Same goes for last year's 4th and 18. I wonder if Collie has stopped living right because he sure is having a hard time catching the ball.

What happened in Michigan was far from luck and they are much better than the patsy you squeaked by yesterday.

I'm glad you blocked that kick because that will make the victory in Nov. over a highly overrated Cougar team that much sweeter.
A FAN | 12:38 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Hey you Reality Check Cougar fans we do not need you go and cheer for whoever is the current top team in the nation that way you will never be disappointed. A fan loves there team no matter what and always believes their team is number 1, otherwise your just a wanabe sports talk show host.
Provo Ute | 12:45 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Well for me I'd rather see the zoobies get beat at home. the look on 65,000 rabid zoobie fans faces, makes it all the sweeter. OVERRATED!!!
BIG Win | 12:54 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Congratulations all around for a good game. Hard fought win on the road in a hostile stadium. UCLA is next, and I can almost see Norm Chow concocting a game plan that might make UCLA look like BYU circa 1990 (They couldn't beat Iowa, either that year). As the game is at home, its a BIG one, and a push towards some major hype, if they can pull it off at home.
Why can't we just enjoy success? | 12:57 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
WOW, amazes me the comments. This season is early for both BYU and UTAH. Both teams are 2-0 and going for 3-0. Let's enjoy the success of both teams and hope they continue to win, improve, and stay health for there meeting in November. Both teams have lot's to improve on, but the season is early and the fun thing about college sports is each year is a new adventure as players come and go with graduation.
sob | 1:03 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
it was still the worst call of the season
and you boob fans are the reason there are so many byu haters,,,,,as if it is a unique (but very easy role) to take
Hang Time | 1:09 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
With the help of my DVR, I timed the hang-time of Locker's "toss", and it was three full seconds. Good punters will only average four seconds.

It's a call refs should make under the present rules. I feel bad for Locker though, He is a class act. I watch him play as often as Husky games are televised.

I also got a kick out of one of the seattle times blogs, which called that penalty, the "Play of the Game" ... I never realized that penalties were categorized among "plays" of the game. I think I would have nominated the blocked kick instead.

Shelby | 1:20 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
A drop of 4 places in the AP poll is pretty telling of what writers across the nation think of the miracle win.
Great win Cougs! | 1:21 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Ute fan stop posting as if you're a coug fan. You guys are pathetic. That was a great win, they were a far better team the Michigan who could barely win at home against Miami of Ohio.

But please keep obsessing over the cougs, that just shows who the big brother is.
re to all silly yewts | 1:24 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
How can you say Utah is a better team when your team stunk the first half. Memo you really haven't done anything yet to pound your chest over. You beat a mediocre to bad Mich. team and you couldn't even score in the first quarter against UNLV? Is there a reality pill you can swallow? You need it.
Scoobie | 1:44 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Didn't you just love how Craig James castigated himself in stooping so low with his comments on Jake Locker's excessive celebration penalty? Yes sir, Craig's still hasn't gotten over the fact that 28 years ago Jim McMahon and BYU took his holiday bone away in the Holiday Bowl.......it was rediculously funny that he would take it out on the PAC 10 officials.............How pathetically unprofessional.

Last comment: Jake Locker!... you played one heck of a game.
What a joke | 2:06 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
BYU dominates in every statistical category (except penalty yards).

Churns out 500 plus yards of offense.

Limits a hungry Husky team to 300 yards (most directly from Locker) while playing on the road in a hostile stadium.

Has to deal with a tag that their win was lucky...

paying for it...

By DROPPING 3 SPOTS IN THE AP POLL.

What a freaking joke!

Since when does a team win on the road against a BCS conference team and drop, not one or two spots, but three in the poll?!?!?!?!

I can't wait for a college football playoff.

DESTROY UCLA

Fully Invested | 2:23 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
All of you Ute fans need to qiut acting like a bunch of PAC-10 lap dogs. It's very unbecoming. I like how you were all predicting a loss yo UW and UCLA, and now you are predicting a loss to UCLA. Why don't you first admit that you were wrong about the UW game before you start up with your ridiculous predictions.

To BYU fans bagging on their defense, do you think the defense is better or worse than last year? Before you answer that keep in mind that we gave up over 50 points to Tulsa last year. UW always plays tough at home(USC last year). You need to get it out of your heads that we have to win by at least 3 tds every time we play. Can't you just be happy with a win without taking credit away from Utah for their win in Michigan?
real Utah+BYU fan | 2:31 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
hey a win is a win. The thing is that BYU just always plays good enough to win. Thats why the last few years when it comes down to the tough close game they happen to come out on top they just win!
believer | 2:37 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Are you kidding me the defence was much improved this game, over last week. I dont get why everone is ragging on they, when they had to they made the plays they got the stops they helped win the game, even though they needed to block a PAT to do so.
Random Thoughts | 2:42 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
BYU just dropped to #18 in the AP poll. E. Carolina joins the poll at #14 and to be honest, they deserve at least that. Utah is at #22 and Fresno St is #21. So unless E. Carolina takes a loss this year, they will be the BCS buster.
U of U Cougar | 2:59 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Re: Random Thoughts

East Carolina is the team that BYU/Utah needs to be worried about if they want to make it into the BCS. East Carolina scheduled tough to start the season, and now has a cup cake walk to the finish. Even if BYU/Utah win out East Carolina is in the BCS busting driver seat(and deservingly so).

As for the call to end the Washington game, it was a penalty. Should the PAC-10 OFFICIALS have thrown the flag...NO!!! Keep it in your pocket, sure the rule is written; however, there are times when you look the other way. Now all the national people who vote in the polls are using the call as an excuse to knock the Cougars down in the polls. This is due to the biased way in which the highlights of the game are being presented, as if Washington controlled the entire game and it was a miricle BYU held on to win the game.

Yet, what nobody is talking about is the fact the Locker did break a rule. Why give an official a chance to make a call? Act like you have been there before, and play the game. No ball throw no penalty!
Wildcat not afraid of Cougar | 3:06 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
I am not a Ute I am a Wildcat, just to make that perfectly clear. I realize we are the subdivision but BYU acts like they are a team from the subdivision as well:) I mean is that BYU who stormed the field? Do you think Oregon stormed the field last week? Do you think Oregon hates UW worse than BYU, guarantee it. Why do BYU fans refer to themselves as BIG brother? Maybe to Weber State you are but to Utah and even USU you are not a BIG brother and if you are what a sad excuse for a BIG brother? That is your first NON-CONFERENCE win on the road in how many years? And let's not forget it was USU that you last beat on the road-heck we beat USU I think.

BYU is nothing more than an oversized bubble full of self righteous haters who want to fight every Ute, Aggie and Wildcat they see. You can find Cougar comments about every other team in the state, WHY? I like to get on here simply because BYU is not as relevant as they think they are with their wiz bang firesides and fully invested talk:)
BYU Fan | 3:12 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
You people are pathetic. You're right maybe BYU's defense didn't play all that well, but look at the stats. BYU doubled almost everything Washington did. So maybe it was a bad call, but either way BYU was by far the better team. They had some stupid mistakes like a fumble in the endzone and a interception when they were driving. They will get those mistakes fixed, and the defense will make adjustments. They are gonna be just fine. And although they are in a lot of close games, they are pretty good at pulling out a win. I am not worried at all. Cougars rock! Rip UCLA apart!
Wichita | 3:14 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
I don't care if a block is a block.

The fact that the supposed No. 15 team in the country barely squeeked out a win at a Washington team that is going to battle for last place in the PAC 10, says that the No. 15 team is likely overrated. No getting around it. You can say a win is a win all you want, but after a lackluster week 1, and now a close loss to a team that a true No. 15 team in the country would have crushed, you can bet that Bronco and his staff are a bit less confident today than they were two weeks ago.
Let's Be Honest... | 3:30 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
There is no way BYU can play like that and beat UCLA! The QUEST will end next week in LES. I hate to see it happen, but BYU has a lot of work to do if they are going to stop UCLA.
Injuries? | 3:37 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
The week previous Washington lost big to a team with a hurry up offense. Granted some of the injuries to Washington players may have been legitimate. However, it sure seemed like a lot of Washington players went "down" and returned a couple of plays later. Each time giving their defense a chance to catch their breath and regroup.
Give the team a break!!! | 3:39 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
You can definetly tell who are "Y" fans and "U" fans by comments made here. It wasn't the "Y" that made the call, it was the refs as they saw it, and when it came down to it... the cougs blocked the kick. I wish people would stop finding reasons to downgrade BYU. They have played hard and worked to get where they are. All you grippers, why don't you put your negative energy to some good use, like volunteer to help those in need! I am soooo tired of your whining and complaining!
Seattle | 3:51 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
I think the problem with the rule is that it is vague. It says throwing the ball "high in the air" is an infraction? How high is high? Since this blog started, estimates have grown from 20 feet to 20 yards. The next poster will probably claim it was 50 or 60 yards.

I was at the game, not far from where the "throw" happened. It was a few feet over Locker's head at most. Is that "high in the air"? I didn't think so and I was pulling for BYU. It's an interpretation issue. Or, the NCAA can define "high in the air."

BYU seemed to move the ball better but had no answer for Jake Locker on the run.

I was also disappointed in watching BYU standing around chatting on the sidelines after the injury while Locker was calling his team together for a prayer for their fallen teammate. Even in little league, we teach the kids to take a knee when a player is down.

Oh, and to the person who jumped on here quoting the Seattle Times today, you deceptively left out the headlines one of which was "Refs deserve a flag for awful call."
re: Wildcat not afraid of Cougar | 3:52 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Ooo nice post, you make so much sense. Tell us, did you type that from your small one room cabin in a remote part of Montana?
Great entertaining game... | 3:52 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Both teams should be praised for the game they playes. Both played with a lot of heart and good sportsmanship. We will never know how the game might have turned out, so why speculate on it. Let's just get on with life and thank both teams for playing a game that kept us on the edge of our seats.
Seattle Part 2 | 3:55 p.m. Sept. 7, 2008
Also, the first part of Willingham's quote has been deliberately excluded; "It really should be a no-call."

Other headlines from the Seattle Times - "A brutal call" and "Locker's controversial penalty precedes extra-point miss."

The intent of the rule is to prevent taunting the other team or calling attention to oneself. Locker was doing neither.
