Friday night the government of the Bahamas issued a hurricane warning as Ike began to close in on the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeastern Bahamas. A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected in the next 24 hours. As of 11 a.m. Hurricane Ike's maximum sustained winds were near 110 miles per hour, with higher gusts. Some fluctuations in strength are possible over the next 48 hours, but forecasters expect Ike will re-intensify into a major hurricane. The center of Hurricane Ike was located about 150 miles east-northeast of Grand Turk Island. Hurricane force winds extend out about 45 miles. Ike is moving toward the west-southwest near 16 mph. This motion is expected to continue through tomorrow with a turn to the west expected Sunday.Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say people in the Bahamas, Cuba, South Florida and the Florida Keys should pay careful attention to this storm. The National Hurricane Center cautions people not to focus on the exact four and five day forecast positions, but rather pay attention to the entire forecast cone because large uncertainties exist especially at those times.
