The older I get the better I am in predicting how college players will preform in the NFL. Alex Smith failing was no surprize for me. O' and Im pretty good at predicting future scores as well... try this years game for example:

BYU 35
Utah 19

Blah blah blah | 3:58 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
Stats can be portrayed any way you want them to. The fact is that the list of players who have made a difference on NFL teams from both teams is weak in comparison. Why doesn't someone put the list of players from USC or Michigan on here. I bet they run out of words remaining and they wouldn't even have to get out of this century.

Who cares?
Spread that bursts bubbles | 4:03 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
Look, the NFL is a business. This SMith kid jumped early frmo college for the money (who wouldn't)

he is very bright and most likely will have a great life and stellar business career. He is rich!

You go to college to learn to earn a living. he has done so, and mmany times over.

So what that he's had 4 different schemes and coaches. Some make it in the NFL and some don't.

On college the spread offense makes a lot fo QB's and receivers look like all americans. They aren't, the system is. In the NFL the spead goes away because of the speed, experience and quickness of the corners and safeties.

Yeah, maybe since he doesn't live by the honor code he's not as good of a football player. Get off your high horse. Even if he does it to emulate Brett Favre, can you blame him for trying to be like one of the best football players ever?
Well.... | 4:31 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. I wish Alex the best of luck and I do hope that he will get a better shot somewhere else if they let him go. Hang in there Alex...
Moving Forward | 4:38 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
At least the 49ers realize that A. Smith is not worth NEARLY as much $ that they have sunk into their #1 draft pick and have decided to move forward. It is time to move forward and forget about sunk costs. Investing more time and $ with Smith will only keep the niners from getting back to their tradition of greatness and make the playoffs.

Re-everyone: Don't you see whats happening. This tough reality is laughing his head off to the way you are responding to his blog. Let it alone and it will go away.
Smith fan | 5:43 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
I think Alex Smith is demoralized. When you watch the old Utah films, he was much quicker and much more accurate, with a good arm, than he is today.

He may have bulked up too much. He may have played too long with the injuries. But the 49ers have not helped him become a better player.

If the 49ers freed him up, and backed him, I still think he could play.

Mike Martz is totally strange. This O'Sullivan business is typical. They want to lose the salary.

I hope he gets a chance to play somewhere with a good coach. He's still very young.
Re:Duh | 6:12 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
You are right! What a mindless thing to argue about which school has or have had more NFL players. It proves nothing! Some of you should go get a job or go do your homework!

To everyone: Thanks for the great laughs....
re: re: it's the beard | 7:37 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
Hey you've got a great point there. Alex should not only keep the Brett Favre beard to emulate his hero but also get some Brett Favre jammies too. Yes I'm talking about the kind with feet in them. But hey what do I know he probably already has some.
answer the real question | 7:51 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
Aren't the real question
1) why the niners picked Smith first overall? He was the best overall quarterback in that draft at that time. Campbell has probably passed him by now. Leinart could have come out that year, but he knew he would have been picked up by the niners so he stayed in college one more year. he obviously didn't need the money, and even now he isn't doing too well with Arizona.
2) why are pro-sports so backwards from all other businesses that they sign huge contracts with unproven players? In most jobs, you have to prove your worth first and then you make the big bucks. (although that's not quite true regarding harvard business school grads. The harvard grad investment bankers I work with are not very good at their jobs but make big bucks cuz of resumes!!!) and;
3) Why is smith stinking up the football field? With all respect, his best friend and roommate committed suicide in the middle of the pre-season, which I'm sure doesn't help his mental game, His coach is not very good, a different professional offense taught to him every year, and no time to learn from mentors. GOODLUCK ALEX
Why? | 9:15 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
Just why is it that some people seem to enjoy doing all they can do destroy and belittle other people?

So Steve Smith does exceptionally well at the U and then struggles in the NFL. The reasons he is struggling seem valid to me, particularly having so many offenses to learn in 4 years. At the very least, these are not "excuses" but justifiable reasons that would make succeeding at the highest level of football in the world, difficult.

Alex Smith struggles and many (some of which no doubt are BYU fans) rejoice.

John Beck struggles and many (some of which no doubt are Utah fans) rejoice.

Did it ever occur to you that if you don't want your school/alumni "picked on" then you might want to try not picking on someone else's alumni?

Trying to destroy or mock someone isn't "fun", that is pathetic living, plain and simple.

To Alex Smith and John Beck, I wish you many, many TDs, few interceptions, the courage to succeed and the bravery to ignore the weak-minded souls on message boards such as these.

Cougs in the NFL WHO PLAYED | 9:39 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
"Re: Cougs in NFL | 2:21 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
Wow...who taught you how to cut and paste lists like that??? That takes REAL talent!

Since you are so skilled in cutting an pasting from a website, see if you can find a website that shows players that actually play in the NFL. Lets see, Todd Watkins...drafted by the Cardinals and now is on the scout team for the Raiders. Not exactly a quality NFL player. You see the point. So scoot...see if you can find a website with that info...you know...the players who actually see the field."

Dude, there just any other way to say it: you're an idiot.

I've been a Cougar/NFL fan for a long time and I recognize at least 30% of the names as having been guys that spent a significant amount of time playing in the NFL and not just watching from the sidelines.

Two of them QB'd their teams to SuperBowl wins. You know, that little game sometime in January that just about the whole country watches to crown the football champions of the world.

With such intelligence, no wonder it's so easy to hate those who hate BYU.

The best quarterbacks in Utah don't come from the Utes they come from the Cougs. Try asking the last quarterback that played for the 49ers from a Utah school. His name was Steve Young, remember him. BYU does seem to have success training future quarterbacks. Smith as a Coug would have got him in a McMahon, Young, or Detmer position, and following the greats from BYU may help him. He should call Steve Young and get some advice. He knows the 49ers system. Steve is not a jerk and would help Alex if he would ask......

Anyone got change for $1,000,000?
Ty Detmer | 12:17 a.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Hey Alex, holding a clipboard isn't all that bad. I did it for years and the people at BYU still love me.
Jim McMahom | 12:20 a.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Frank Gore is no Walter Payton. Things could be worse, you could have spent your college years in Provo.
Alex Smith | 1:12 a.m. Sept. 6, 2008
When I was negotiating my contract with the 49rs, I asked them for 1 million dollars for every point the Utes scored against BYU the last year I played. Unfortunately, they could only afford 49.5 million dollars instead of 53 million.
John Beck | 1:14 a.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Hey Alex, could you spot a brother a couple of million dollars, things aren't working out here in Miami.
CHase Sl | 1:15 a.m. Sept. 6, 2008
To the dude that tried to make fun of using copy and paste.. Here at BYU we are taught to work smarter... other than at UofU.. to work harder. The things people say eh?
