I think there were distinct differences in the tone of each convention that are worth mentioning. Mr. Benson, take a stand and give us an actual insight into what happened at these political conventions. So far, it seems everyone is so concerned with being fair to both sides, nobody is commenting on the stark differences between the style of these conventions.
It is possible to at least attempt objectivity and still reach a conclusion. This is non-news.

The premise to your question is false. Republicans don't want smaller government. Many studies of the Bush administration show that the federal government has grown bigger and faster than during the Clinton administration.
In Utah, state government under Gov. Huntsman has grown bigger and faster than during the administrations of any of his predecessors.
Real analysis requires digging beyond the news releases.
