BYU football: Loss in '96 still disappointing for Lewis

Learn from your defeats! What a wonderful concept for life and football! For
what other reason is there for sports?

Washington is where good BYU teams go to die. It would be a really great
statement for BYU to win this one, regardless of the ability of this Husky team.

Its a must-win no-win game for BYU. Beat them, and there is no glory because
Washington is down and everyone knows it. You are supposed to beat them; Nobody
is impressed, nothing gained in the bid for team and conference respect. Lose
and it is the end of any aspirations they have for anything beyond a conference
championship, and it will seriously dent any national credibility they might
have gained over the past two years. Exactly the sort of game the Cougars have
made a habit of frequently dropping over the years. And their mantra after such
let-downs has been a nauseating, "Well, it is disappointing, but we can
still achieve our goals for the year by winning the conference." I want to
believe in this BYU team, but dropping a winnable game at mediocre UCLA last
year, and a one point bowl squeaker over that same team did not provide the
evidence I am looking for. Given BYU's past history, the likelihood of
Saturday being deja vu all over again looms large. Please, please, puh-LEEZE
prove me wrong.

It was a great day to be a Dawg fan that day in '96. Don't know if
history will repeat itself this time around for the Purple & Gold. That
Husky team actually played defense and Sarkisian was looking out of his ear hole
the entire game. If memory serves the Cougs attributed the loss to not being
totally focused, and worrying more about what socks to wear. I pray that a
wardrobe malfunction can lead to another Husky victory on the shores of Lake
Washington. Mush!

A 1-2 start is very possiable again if this team does not bring there A game to
Washington. We will see if the coaching staff has learned enough to get this
team over the road hump. With UCLA looking better the cougars better bring all
there focus on this game!

Anyone who thinks that the BYU players and coaches won't be totally focused
against Washington just doesn't understand the mentality of this team.
Bronco set the bar high this year precisely to focus this team on their highest potential.
Mistakes and unfortunate bounces happen, and could result in an upset loss, but, BYU won't lose because the players aren't totally focused.
Bronco needs to keep a running back in on passing plays to protect Hall from blindside hits. Expect lots of blitzes from Washington, with man coverage on the WRs. Expect another big day from the TEs, or if Washington covers the TEs, then lots of RAC from the backs.
BYU will win handily if they avoid turnovers that lead to easy Washington scores.

On any given day, especially at an intimidating stadium with the ever-present
possibility of rain, anything can happen.
Cougs better be better prepared than ever for a Husky squad that is sure to be fired up believing that this may be their last best chance for a quality win with Oklahoma coming in next week.
Although totally trust that Bronco has them completely prepared and absolutely focused on taking care of business, there is always that apprehension born from past history looming over us.
Come on Cougs-let's change history tomorrow and bring home a big-time W!!

Please don't give us the focus excuse or the win-loss record in that
stadium! When your goal is to be a top nationally recognized power, it's
going to be necessary to make a statement with a substantial win against
Washington this Saturday. Expecting to win is not necessarily the attribute of
an overconfident team. It's OK to respect this opponent...and then crush
them...anything less is not going to impress the BCS crowd.

BYU will lose at Washington for the following reasons:
1. Matt Reynolds can't protect Hall's back.
2. Hall will get sacked several times, losing the ball on at least one of them.
3. We don't have a run game against BCS teams (and Anae's clueless as to why).
4. Hall won't have another high-yard passing day.
5. Key players will get injured on that sticky artificial turf (re: Unga's ankle).
BYU will win at Washington for the following reasons:

People are wrong when they say there is no gain to beating UW, it's a WIN!
It's a pac10 road game, did anyone watch Villanova beat SC last night? V
hadn't beat a ranked opponent in almost 2 decades. UW isn't the
greatest but they still have all the tools.
I'm a UW native, was a purple hazer all growing up, but I've been died in the whool blue and blue through and through since college days.

Chad, even if BYU had beat Washington and we finished 15-0 that year the Bowl
Alliance still wouldn't have let us into one of their big money bowls. That
deal was only for their conferences + Notre Dame at the time. No outsiders
allowed. It was only after the threat of anti-trust investigations and action
that the current BCS loosened things up to let a non-BCS team have a chance at
one of their bowls.

Villanova hadn't beat a ranked opponent at home since 92. Villanova beat a
couple of ranked teams on the road including #5 South Carolina last year.

Before I get started Vanderbilt beat SC last night not Villanova. Anyway
Washington has good athletes, but for whatever reason has not been able to put
it together. Just like BYU has not been able to get over the hump with
non-conference road games. Lets shut the naysayers up for good and lets put
Washington away early. If we fumble, get intercepted and make a bundle of
error's to begin with it will be an upset for sure. I am tierd of watching
BYU fumble and stumble on the road with credible teams. Please if this is the
year please start out good thier or it will be a long day for the cougars.

So what is our problem with trips to BCS stadiums? Do our boys still get all
starry-eyed when they step into the magnificence and tradition of ______
Stadium? I think this was a big part of our bowl woes, but I hope we are past
this. Utah certainly didn't look mystified in the big house; it was just
another game in just another stadium against just another team. I sure hope we
can do the same, but I suspect there is more than one player thinking more about
that 0-3 record than his assignment. Boys, Just imagine you're in
Albuquerque and do your business.

...in news when all they can talk about is how Chad Lewis is sad that he lost a
football game 12 years ago. I think I would be more upset about the super bowl
loss a few years ago.

If BYU couldn't contain UNI's "fatman" QB, how are they
going to contain Locker? Not enough speed can kill an otherwise good team. The
offense better not sputter or this one will wind up an "L" just like
in '96.

Um, they DID contain UNI's QB. All of his yards came on the one big run (69 yards?) that led to the first half field goal. Good running QBs are going to get one or two good runs in a game. You just need to stop them from getting more than that 1 or 2, and I believe BYU's D can do that.
Remember, UNI's points came off 3 plays: the big run, the double-reverse WR toss, and the Hall fumble in the end zone. 2 big plays and one major mistake by BYU. Other than that, BYU's defense dominated them.

@Fat Man Did you watch the game? We didn't contain him? I don't
know what you call it then, but when we pommel him to the ground and can't
move, I'd say that ws containing him.

@Woof I was at that game and yes, BYU lost. The way I remember it we started off slow. Yes, it was disappointing, but we won the battle the second half (unfortunately lost the war). Sarkisian was not looking out of his ear hole. Of course, admittedly I am always wearing my BYU goggles! I wish I could go this year.

BYU didn't really lose this game, the refs cheated them, just like all of
the other losses they have ever had.

Great to hear about Chad Lewis and his take on this game. It is a big game for
the Cougars and I wish them all the best especially on the road.
