Johnny Utah #9 | 9:41 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
It's really sad that this type of stuff matters in an election. Most politicians are lying, sneaky, underhanded crooks looking to make millions from the American people. And yet, too many are concerned that she has a pregnant daughter out of wedlock. Who cares? Is that an issue that will decide America's fate? No. I hope Palin did smoke pot, and inhale, and then do it again because she liked it. People gain life experiences by living outside the sheltered box that many of you live in. Without the trials and tribulations of these experiences, you're never pushed to make important decisions. Without that you can't be a great leader. Since everything is so controlled in Utah, deciding what tie to wear to church is the biggest decision most people make here.
To: Roland Kayser | 9:41 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
Mr. Kayser, drawing the similarity between a VP nominee's high school daughter getting pregnant and the Commander in Chief having sex with his employee are not even in the same ballpark.

If either affects how someone votes or feels about a candidate, that's their right. But those two scenarios are not the same.
David | 9:45 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
Bristol Palin got pregnant outside of marriage. Abstinence education is blamed. John Edwards allegedly has a child out of wedlock. Clearly explicit sex education is to blame.

If McCain is elected we the tax payers get to pay for the care of new baby of Bristol & Levi while they live in the basement of the VP house, getting better medical & dental benefits than any of us will ever have. We get to pay for the kiddies to fly home via Air Force Two to Alaska complete w/ S. Service detail. And if this baby is born in Alaska, good old mom will be able to hop on a government transport Gulfstream G5 and be there in time for delivery. This woman has her hands full with her family and someone will suffer as she attempts to fullfill her duties as VP. Maybe McCain will just have her going to State funerals and making useless speeches just like that other GOP bright choice -Dan Q.
Lee Benson is right, part 1 | 9:54 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
Lee, I agree 100%. McCain and Palin are the ones responsible for bringing the Palin family's crisis into the limelight, not the media or the public. When she was announced as VP, and her wonders were proclaimed, I thought, "Wow, can it be true? A real super-woman at last, who really can do it all? How are the children are doing, I wonder?" Three days later we found out. As career opportunities-of-a-lifetime come along to parents and spouses whose families are in temporary states of great need, many thousands of women AND men have and would decline them in order to care for the family. Many have the courage to say, often in anquish, "I want to serve, but call me back in five or ten years." They do so knowing the call may never come, but such people are never forgotten by their families, not for generations. If they are competent, opportunities will keep coming. This is not a sexist attitude, as I heard one Christian Republican leader criticize on NPR this morning . . .

As usual in this state. As long as the person has a R behind his or her name- that person's life is off limits. But let it be a D or an I and all heck breaks loose! The R leadership in this state is a joke. I'm not a D- I'm one of those I's that the D's and R's talk about. The R's VP choice is as bad as the D's VP choice! I do know that being a Mayor in Alaska quailifies you for staring in Mayberry-that's about it.

Whoever said Sarah Palin does not know U.S. History should also check Obama's knowledge. Obama said he had visited 57 states and had one more to go. For all you that question her experience explain what Obama has ever been in charge of, where is his experience. Hanging out in racist churches? Or withterrorists? Or with slum lords? I am not sure that exprerience qualifies him any more than Sarah Palin.
Oops! | 10:14 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
Lee,
You missed this one. I would argue that going through real family issues like a daughter having a child out of wedlock, qualifies her to be MORE in touch with Americans. I am sure she is not proud of her daughter's actions, but if this is the only 'dirt' they can dig up on her, then the media is really grasping at straws. And so what if she went back to work 3 days after her baby was born? That's not even newsworthy to me. Did she also leave the cap off the toothpaste once?
Palin, Wrong for America | 10:16 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
We can see through this choice that McCain is following the Bush doctrine for appointments. First, Dick Cheney, no elaboration necessary. Fran Townsend, soccer mom with no experience or knowledge about homeland security but a wife of a good friend. Mike Brown FEMA, relative of a big contributor. Personal secretary Harriett Myers nominated for the supreme court. Halliburton and huge no-bid contracts. If we want government to work for us, we need to get rid of these guys and give the Dems a chance. They could not possibly do worse than the Rebublicans have the last 8 years. I recall fondly the Clinton years as peaceful, a strong economy, and we even had a budget surplus. Bring back the good ol days. Bill for PREZ.

Going after Sarah Palin is so ridiculous. She's been a great Governor. What has Obama been? A community organizer, that's it. Which means he organized people to vote for him and further his political career. With Obama, it's ALL about Obama. Become President and make mega-millions of bucks, exactly what the Clintons did. It was all about the Clintons too. Greedy selfish people that they are. For Palin, it's been all about the people she works for, making life better for them. Grow up liberal hacks. Whatever negatives you can find about Palin, there are worse to be said about Obama and he's running for Pres, not VP.

Hey D | 10:23 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
Anyone could have picked an aging Senator for a running mate. There are lots of them out there to choose from.

But a Sarah Palin.... now there you have someone trying to make a change.

I, personally, am pleased to see that she has made a few enemies while Governor in Alaska. If not, it would speak to her unwillingness to play agressively in the political arena. Politics is not a lovey-lovey business. Our leaders need to be tough, employ strategy, and respond as appropriate. Both nationally and internationally.

As Patton once said, and Sarah Palin is finding out, "God deliver us from our friends. We can handle our enemies."
Collin Slade | 10:26 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
I am a republican, and I am here to tell you that the decisions candidates make in their private lives DOES matter.

If a candidate can't control their conduct and leadership in their provincial, totally controllable private lives and family lives, why should they be trusted with their decison making, and leadership with greater responsibility????

Lack of fidelity and integrity mattered with Bill Clinton. It matters with Sarah Palin. And McCain, and Obama and everyone else who comes before the people and requests to lead.

Do you know of one true 'blessing' here? We will no longer be inundated by pictures of Brad and Angelina on the covers of People and the Enquirer at the checkstand ... from now on it will be Levi, Bristol, and their baby. Cheney's daughter is gay, Bush has a daughter who was a total embarrassment, and nothing was said. Think about this. Sarah Palin is great. Her kids love her, she has a great family, and she has answered a 'call' to serve. What she is doing is sacrificial and I, and we all know, she fully realizes the issues of not being home with her family. So they bring the family to her in the White House. McCain could not have picked a better running mate.
Paperboy | 10:38 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
"Her private life should be off-limits," said Senator Bob Bennett.

So, a candidate's views on religion, family, the U.S. constitution, abortion, use of legal (alcohol) and illegal drugs, sexual preference, the right to bare arms, support for national defense, etc. should be kept private?

You can't have it both ways Bob. This statement just doesn't make sense. In the last 40 years or so (since Reagan was elected) there has been a strong precedent for intense public scrutiny of each party's candidate for the presidential ticket. Both the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidate has undergone a vetting process through the press.

How a candidate has conducted himself or herself in private life goes to the heart of the matter of whether a person is fit for public service and deserves to hold one of the two most powerful public offices in the U.S., and the world, for that matter.

Why is Sarah Palin deserving of a different standard?
Donovan | 10:41 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
I am LDS and I realize that abortion has been legal since 1973. It is still legal.
I voted republican several times because of the abortion issue, but nothing has ever been done, nor will it ever.

I have come to the conclusion that we have been lied to for votes, period the end.

When I look at the state of the nation after the last eight years I get sick.

I don't care aboout "well it this fault, or that fault", the republicans have been at the top of the tree, and they have devistated the country to the point of no return. (I hope not, but just look around).
I must vote for anybody who has a different vision for "we the people". I will put religion on the side burner this time around.

Don't the LDS know that the Republican Party laugh at the Mormons behind closed doors? Better wake up!
The GPO is run by the Southern religious right and they have no place for Mormons.
Do the Democrats constantly bring up Senator Harry Read religion? No.
It was reported by the press that the GPO has adopted the trends of the Nazis. Distance yourself from them.
Come November I think you will see a big switch by Nevada and Utah to Obama. He says nothing prejudicial against peoples religion.
Good point! | 10:43 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
10:19, you raise a good point. Amid all of the hubbub about what great character John McCain's experiences in the Hanoi Hilton gave him, we hear very little about his adulterous relationship with Cindy McCain before the two married.

Those who are quick to condemn Billyboy Clinton for his adultery, are rather slow to condemn John McCain for dumping his crippled wife in order to marry a blonde heiress to a beer fortune. Sounds like family values to me.

Also, I hope we get to hear more about how Sarah Palin's husband belonged to the Alaska Independence Party, an anti-American secessionist movement in Alaska. Sounds like patriotism to me.

If parenting were a Science then we could figure it all out and all of our kids would turn out just perfect in every way. But, it's not. Everyone makes mistakes and none of us are responsible for the mistakes of others...even our children if we did the best we could. It is curious to me that the majority of the attacks against Palin are actually for the decisions made by those around her, some of which were made decades ago (please don't judge me today on what I did when I was younger, but on what I do now). The true sign of character is not by the trials we face, but in how we face them. Sarah Palin has had two situations where many Americans would have taken the easy road and opted for abortion. She has declined both and chosen the more difficult road of personal responsiblity and accountability. She seems to pass the test very well. Yet, her detractors want to focus on the trials and not on the way she handles them. Sounds like they're having to dig pretty deep.

Two posters on this article and several yesterday said Barack Obama considers babies mistakes. I am sure you are passing this along from other sources using the comment out of context. It was not said in supporting abortion. In context you can see that the mistake he was referring to was a failure in "teaching children that sex is not causal" and not giving them enough education to protect themselves from disease.
What a joke | 11:16 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
Oh my! A child being born out of wedlock. That hasn't ever happened before. You can't possibly be a good parent when a child gets pregnant at the age of 17. (Please note the serious sarcasm here) All this article proves is that she is human. I can name lots of people who have these same things happen. I am a Mormon who will be voting democrat but it is because of McCain, not Palin. Get over yourself Lee. What an awful article! And heaven forbid your child ever gets pregnant as a teen. Maybe your better than thou opinion might change.
Part 2, Lee is right | 11:19 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
. . . As I was saying, one Christian Republican leader this morning on NPR attempted to defend the choice of Palin by calling people like me sexists (I'm female). What name shall we call those who esteem the right of children to be reared with adequate care, safety, and privacy to be equal to the right of parents to do whatever they want, regardless of the consequences to their families? Hear this about George McGovern,'s efforts to find a running mate: After being turned down by a few more prominent people he wrote, "I turned to Abe Ribicoff, a senator from Connecticut and another longtime friend. He said it would be an honor to be the first Jew on the national ticket of either party, but he was about to marry. 'I just can't cancel a honeymoon and take on a national campaign,' he told me." Palin would hardly be the first American to put family matters before career or ethnic, gender, religious or political causes. It has happened in tens of thousands of great families by great spouses and parents all over this country, and THAT is what has made our nation great.

Actually Sarah Palin did smoke pot and fully admits to it. She said it was legal in AK. when she smoked. I am fine with smoking pot and I think it should be legal. But, Sarah as a VP is the most insulting thing to all women. It is very hard to listen to her speak she is so stupid. I just wish we could have a pres and VP who actually know how to form sentences. I watched McCain's face when they announced her as VP and you can tell he is so not happy about this choice, he just had to choose a woman but why not an intelligent woman. Oh, I forgot Republicans like to thing women are dumb. That is why McCain voted NO on equal pay for women.
re: quotes out of context | 11:31 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
The quotes are not out of context. He was supporting abortion. Obama said he would not want his daughters to make a mistake and then be forced to live with it.
Money-G | 11:32 a.m. Sept. 3, 2008
If McCain truly knew about all the issues that are surfacing regarding Palin's past, which I doubt, then why would you select her as a running mate. Yes, McCain is regarded as a Maverick but this selection even crosses that line. Obama is not qualifed to run the affairs of the country but she is. Makes know practical sense to me. Yes I agree with Senator Obama that the family is off limits. However, it appears that Palin has more pressing issues to deal with at home than trying to run on a presidential ticket. I don't think McCain again made the correct decision and will probably be his downfall to the highest office in the land. But better to find out now than later in the White House making hasty decisions.
re No to Hypocrisy | 12:01 p.m. Sept. 3, 2008
Are you kidding me? You were never going to vote conservative so your hypocrisy is apparent. The Dems are the ones flaming this not the conservatives. She said her daughter is pregnant and plans to marry her boyfriend and raise their child. Where did they stray? Only in the eyes of a liberal. As for your Obama example, it makes not sense because it is pure hypothetical and cannot ever be proven one way or another.
Definition of a liberal: Someone who stands on their head and tells the world it's upside down.

BTW, LDS guidelines state that the first solution to the pregnancy is for the couple to marry if it is appropriate. I guess you must be referring to the FLDS or maybe the RLDS or maybe your own HypocricyLDS. Get a life and go ahead and vote for the guy who says yes to partial birth abortions. I'm sure you will feel better that you did your part to keep it going. After all we don't need so many mistakes born each year.

We did win the Iraq war and the war on Terror in Iraq is nearly won. Feel free to keep reading the liberal media who would also tell you the world is flat if it fits their agenda. As for the economy a 3% growth rate is pretty good considering the mortgage and oil problems going on right now. Your precious european union only gets at best a 1% growth rate. Socialists like you should move to countries where your ideas are acceptable. Heck Hugo Chavez would welcome you with open arms right? I just hope we can get more liberals out of washington so I could keep more of the money I earned and give it to the charities I deem worthy. But people like you want to force me to give my money to the ones you deem worthy (planned parenthood, Air America, etc). Of course you won't give your money. Let's take it from the rich who by definition are just the conservatives.

I am not the father of a pregnant 17 year old. I left my job to make sure my children would have someone in their life. Go look at the pics of Bristol with hard liquor and goofing off. They sacraficed our children for oil. They tell us to support it our we are not patriotic, that is garbage. McCain who doesn't even know how many houses he has, and Sara, good o'l wonderful Sarah, getting 27 million for her pee wee little town on ear marks. Really, what about her little highway to nowhere, the only reason she changed her mind on that was they weren't going to bribe her with enough money. So take a look at this party and tell me what they have done for the people of this country, not the people of their country club, but this country, the poor the sick etc..
Anonymous | 12:23 p.m. Sept. 3, 2008
So, we can't pick on candidate's families, is that what the republican's are saying. then why did McCain, back in June 1998, pick on Chelsea Clinton when he was speaking at a republican fundraiser:

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno.

The republicans picked on Jimmy Carter's brother or his daughter all those years back, and what about Bill Clinton's brother?

I hate to say it but both sides pick on every little thing about the other candidate, including their families. If someone is going to run for the highest office in the country then they, along with their family, will be scrutinized. Their family can/will influence the candidate (look at Nancy Reagan with Ronnie, or Hillary with Bill). The candidate should have had some serious discussions with their family members about the implications of running and if the family didn't want to be put in the spotlight the candidate shouldn't have run. The pregnancy is fair game!!

Whether it is right or it is wrong, the reality is that the media will stick its nose in to every politician's personal life. And, the bigger the office, the bigger the scrutiny. I have lived through Monica Lewinsky, the drunk Bush daughters, Palin's personal life, and I am sure many more media-frenzies to come. The media reports--thank goodness.

Teenager gets pregnant. Gee that never happens in Democrat circles. Just goes to prove that there is nothing to do in Wisalia.

Hubby gets a DUI 20 years ago. My guess is that he paid his debt to society and now it is irrellivant. Had he gotten arrested last week, it would be a big deal, for him.

Fired the Public Safety Director for not firing her former Bro-In-Law. He should have been fired. He was drinking beer in his police car on duty, and did a few other things that were unseemely while on duty. She had the right to fire the director because he serves at her whim anyway.

I think that we could infer that she is human as well as her family. While I don't condone teen pregnancy, she did it and she is preggers. Oh well. If she is old enough to tango, she is old enough to pay the price. Adoption? Yes.

Im curious, Palin states the father of her daughter's child will marry her daughter. The kid is only 17 or 18 himself and you're going to tell him who he is going to spend the rest of his life with. I'm not sure that will fly with his parents. I think Lee has every right to write about a candidates life history because the candidate is running for public office and wants the public to trust them to make the right decision affecting the country. How you've lived your lifes has some merit on what you believe and how you will make decisions. Lee is just reporting the facts or what he believes to the facts at this point in time.

I graduated from high school in 1972, I went to a school of 3000, I knew of one girl getting pregnant. Now, girls are having sex at age 12, but they can abort the babies or have our taxes take care of them. I can't believe that a young woman, who got pregnant and is going to marry the father is more sinful for letting the baby live. What is wrong with our society, we know that Obama would have his child abort the baby. The far left has made having babies a sin, what is wrong with them???

I find it incredulous that "liberals, leftists and democrats are being held out as responsible for all this controversy I guess it's born of the idea that he who is not with us is against us, and that thereby plenty of republicans and etc are being tarred. The controversy itself has become the news, almost as if orchestrated. Nobody needs to fan the flames, our cultural values are doing all that work. A nation of gossip mongers is at play. It does seem a bit disconsonate with the ideal she proclaims, so there's a handle on it somewhere, but nobody's perfect.
Somehow we ought to try seeing some of these lables as variant spellings of the proverbial N word, and just never use them anymore. Soon enough, new designer words will appear to take their places, but maybe by then we'll learn that all this phony short sighted labeling is really the problem.
United we stand, divided we fall. Lables are for the purpose of dividing. Cooperation and accommodation are essential to a democracy. Dividers mean for us to fail.
God Bless Grandmas and their tireless efforts toward conciliation.
Best of luck to the kids and their lives.

is not what is bad. It is the fact that she chose her political glory over her family. She had to have understood before hand what she was going to do to her daughter by running for VP. Another Jaime Lee Spears.

Family values? She didn't abort her son, but it doesn't she is willing to spend very much time with him either...I think that she could have served her country without sacrificing her family if she would have waited a couple of years. She probably is a great person, but when you preach that family is the fabric of our country and say no to same-sex marriages and no to abortions for this reason, please don't say no to taking care of the ones that are already alive.

The trooper controversy is a joke. The State Trooper shot her nephew with a Taser Gun. The kid was eleven years old. No kidding, Sarah Palin wanted him fired? He could have killed her nephew. This was just one of many instances that the Trooper had made very bad judgement calls.

Walt Monegan wouldn't terminate him from his position. Walt Monegan was let go. These Troopers are hired to protect and serve....not to shoot eleven year olds with Taser Guns for fun at family picnics.

Walt Monegan was hired to do his duty and discipline officers who were a threat to society lacking sound judgement. Walt failed to do his job. He tried to sweep the incident under the rug.

Sarah Palin did her job...she found a replacement that would enforce discipline on the State Troopers.

This has been covered ad nauseum, but what is there about having a teenage child make a mistake and going back to work after giving birth to a child that even remotely suggests that she has been uncovered as some kind of fraud? Au contraire. I think it shows that she is a normal person who is able to deal with the unexpected setbacks we all experience.

I, like many of the posters, am trying to figure out why this is even news. It sounds like a desperate attempt to discredit her for something that seems to demonstrate her ability to be a mom and a public servant at the same time and is not a negative unless you want it to be, and it is apparent that many DO want it to be.

If you must, find something legitimate to criticize her for, but for being a hard worker and a mother of a children who make mistakes? The horror. She must be the only person who has children who make mistakes. Shame on her.

Keep moving. Nothing to see here.

I understand that Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin attempted to quietly have her daughter Bristol get married before news of her pregnancy leaked out. Palin had planned for the wedding to take place right after the Republican National Convention and then she was going to announce the pregnancy. But her daughter refused to go along with the plan and that sparked a mother-daughter showdown over the failed cover-up.
