I agree, Lucy Mack Smith's recollections and writings are insightful and valuable. In Bushman's Book (Rough Stone Rolling) he pulls from her accounts of JS talking about the Nephite lifestyles around the fireplace. The odd thing is, he was doing this years BEFORE he got the plates....
Humm....
I think everyone interested in Joseph Smith's history should read Lucy Mack's writings.
to Agreed(8:15):
Why would it be odd to talk about Nephite lifestyles before he obtained the plates? He was tutored by at least one resurrected Nephite for four years prior to getting the plates.
What a crock of nonsense. Now he was "tutored by at least one resurrected Nephite for four years prior to getting the plates"? Was that when he was digging for gold treasure or looking in the hat? Do you folks realize just how silly this all really is?
to Gullible(8:41):
The explanantion is not silly at all. It is consistent in its flow. Joseph met with Moroni at least 9 times over a four year period according to his own account. Each time he was taught by Moroni. That constitutes "tutoring". Whether you believe his account or not, if his account were to be true, then he would have gained much knowledge through this tutoring prior to obtaining the plates.
There are also aspects of Joseph's history which Lucy doesn't mention-such as his 'first vision'. Also interestingly enough while Lucy does include Joseph's visitation by the angel Moroni she claims he was praying at the time to know if God existed.
Joseph needed and recieved much tutoring and training in detail discussions with Moroni.I'm sure if it had all been recorded,it would be larger than the translation.I believe that many parts of the Book of Mormon would not have been translated had Moroni not been there every step of the way.I dont think there is a person on earth who fully understands what went on with Joseph and Moroni from the time of Moroni's first visit to the printing of the book.It would be the greatest story the world has ever known. To those who do not accept the Book of Mormon,I feel sorry for.Actually to know its true is a gift from God.Thank you Joseph!Thank you.
If I recall correctly Lucy's recollections were dictated and written down by another woman when Lucy was in advanced age. Therefore it would not surprise me if dates, events and people were as she remembered but maybe not 100 percent accurate.
Didn't Brigham Young try to halt Lucy's writings? That he claimed that they were
full of false data and inconsistencies?
The JS storytelling to his family around the fireplace, as recorded by Lucy Mack Smith, WAS BEFORE MORONIT appeared to him. FYI. Now figure that one out...I think I have.
If you don't believe in these things thats fine! Dont try to go around with your heavy patronizing tone. Just because you dont believe doesn't make you any better than believers, its a spiritual thang! I beleive the world will some day give up war and hate, sum call me gullible but i still believe.
Sometimes people belittle the comments of others over little things, like a miss spelled word:
I meant MORONI (somehow the "T" crept in there!).
How confusing all this is, is there no way to get to the bottom of it and at the truth. It is worse than trying to make sense of our phonie politicians and all their lies.
Did Maroni teach Joseph Smith how to run the Kirtland Bank?
Larry must have meant MORONI also. Grab your ears, Larry, and pull real hard, stay with us here...
to Before Moroni(12:39):
Check your facts. Moroni first appeared to Joseph in 1823. These "family discussions" mentioned by Lucy Mack Smith occured between 1823 and 1827 when Moroni finally allowed Joseph to take the plates. During this time period, there were multiple meetings between Moroni and Joseph. All Nephite discussions came after the first visits of Moroni.

Thank you for your comments. I do not have the book handy to look up the information. Thank you for anwsering to at least my satisfaction - some people will NEVER get it.
to JanSan (2:08):
You are welcome. My actual on-line name is sireofmany. I don't consider myself an expert, but I have read and studied much about the history of the church. Once you filter out all of the obvious anti-literature, the rest begins to fall into place. Do you have differing third party accounts of history? Of course you do. The point is that when the accounts are taken together, it is possible to draw a pretty good picture of what actually happened and a relatively accurate timeline of when. The accounts of Joseph, his family and his close associates are consistent with one another. It is also obvious that we will never have a complete account of everything that took place until the Lord decides to reveal it to us as a people. As with all spiritual matters, the best test and the best evidence is a testimony based on faith and confirmation by the Holy Ghost. Thankfully we have actual writings to supplement this faith based knowledge, but it would still be true even if we had no evidence other that the evidence of faith.
To Whoops...I thought you meant Morons?
I believe in ghosts and goblins, fairies, pixies and leprechauns too. Its a spiritual "thang" alright! It is certainly not intellectual.
