It is unusual to see where the Conservative body politic is giving overwhelming approval to the pregnancy of a sixteen or just seventeen year old girl at the hands of a 24 year old man. If the shoe were on the other foot Conservative tongues would be wagging, why should they be surprised when right now Liberal tongues are wagging.
Not a good pick | 3:51 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Sarah Palin is not a suitable choice for the VP nomination. She lacks ANY experience on the foreign policy stage. The chances of John McCain succumbing to Melenoma are significant as well as any other age related disease. She stands an decent chance of becoming president at a time of war. This was John McCain's first executive decision and it was not a good one. McCain admits to having met this lady only ONCE!

Obama on the other hand, chose a man who has had years of experience on the senate foreign relations committee. A man who COULD be president and execute the duties of the office successfully. This was his first executive decision.

Who did better? IF you can answer this honestly you should perhaps reconsider your unwaivering loyalty to the republican party. Facts are facts.

Palin is a fake. look and pay attention to her countenance, and her facial expresions, and her tone of voice and body language.

By the bristling of the Looney Liberal Left it seems as if McCain has chosen a winner. If the Looney Liberal Left is as so confident in Obama and Biden' experience, or should I say the lack of experience, they would simply shut up and let the Republicans flounder in their mistake. Yet, the Looney Liberal Left is very loud, boisterous and downright obnoxious which tells me that Sarah is a winner of which the Looney Liberal Left has no answer for. Way to go McCain!

Oh, by the way, for you Liberal Looneys who are drinking the Obama Kool-Aid, I hope that it tastes good for now, because in November it will become very bitter, indeed!

who is without sin, cast the first stone....

I guess those of you who are now running to sacrifice Palin for this information are so perfect and should be considered to replace her as VP for the GOP huh?

Give me a break. What is going with her daughter should be left a private family matter and shouldn't affect her ability as a public official...
omyheck | 5:25 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Wow the judgement here is overwhelming! Are we really talking about a 20 year old DUI? You all want to be strung up for something not you, but your significant other did 20 years ago?! Her daughter is pregnant? Sounds like she is doing what LOTS of kids are doing dem and republican and she got caught. I guess mom could have rushed in with a secret and swift abortion... Then again she could have terminated her own difficult pregnancy and a less than perfect baby. Oh wait...that is the OTHER party that would do that. Such one sided media attention.

My gop has turned into a national joke!!! Someone please tell the good woman to go back to Alaska and grow up, and then come back on stage. One thing is for certain: McCain had months to choose and he chose a loser.

She is Not ready for prime time. And neither is he!!! I am seriously considering voting demo for the first time in my life. Yes, !!!!
Anonymous | 5:24 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Not when people take a look at Palin's record of deficit and swelling budgets, her own corruption and the Alaska corruption she supported and the astronomically high earmarks she not only took but *lobbied* for.

John McCain lied to you guys and you don't even do the reading to know about it.
Conservative Hypocrites! | 6:17 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
If one of Obama's daughters were to get pregnant out of wedlock, I'm sure DN would be overwhelmed with comments about how liberalism is undermining family values.

But since it is one of your own, you recommend that we not pass judgement--a very provisional understanding of morality, indeed.

The Palin pregnancy-gate has made two things clear: conservative families are just (and maybe even more) prone to dysfunction; and conservatives who cling to their high-minded principles, and impose them on others, are just trying to hide their own dysfunction and bad behavior.

Obama has even less experience. And he is running for president!!!
Task from God | 6:45 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
The problems keep coming:media outlets are now reporting that Palin described the war in Iraq as a "task from God." Do we really want a fanatic next in line for the presidency?

McCain made a huge mistake choosing her. This raises some serious questions about McCain's judgement.
RE: Let him... | 6:45 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Yes, I'd make a better choice for Republican VP nominee than Sarah Palin. So would close to half of Americans, considering the things she's done that Republican pundits are citing as sufficient to call her 'qualified'. I'm not a Republican anymore (though I was registered with that party for 30 years), but then Joe Lieberman isn't a Republican either and he was McCain's first preference, so I guess I'm still in the running.

What's at question is her judgment in accepting the vp spot given her daughter's situation, and McCain's judgment in offering it to her. That's what has to be judged, because we want a president who can make the correct informed decision when confronted with a new situation. And with these two extremely important decisions, both Palin and McCain fail. Miserably.

Ah well. Once she's off the ticket she can go home and rejoin the Alaska Separatist Movement.

These "scandals" are really non-issues to me. The fact that John McCain even selected Sarah Palin is what concerns me most. It tells me how out of touch he really is with the American people and the issues. Bottom line is that this election is about one thing and one thing only--it's the ECONOMY stupid!

This selection is meant to pander solely to the female vote, telling us exactly what he thinks of women....that they are shallow and uninformed and will vote for someone just because they are a woman. How silly and transparent. It also speaks volumes about his arrogance and hubris in thinking that he alone is strong enough to carry the GOP banner without a strong running mate.

I'm a registered Republican, but quite frankly, I don't like what I see from either candidate at this point.
Observer | 7:09 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
I've read a number of posts on this article by republicans who claim that democrats are posting because they're terrified that the selection of Palin will give McCain the presidency. Take my word for it, that isn't the reason that democrats are jumping all over this story. They're posting on this site, and other internet sites because they're having such a good time at republican expense. Only republicans can't see what a joke Palin is as a vp candidate. Only republicans can't see the irony of the situation. But then, republicans can't see a lot of things.

Has anyone thought about what all this publicity and hostility is doing to 17-year-old Bristol Palin? If the human vultures of this nation don't drive her to suicide, I'll be shocked. How about a little compassion from the Democrat party that claims to be the home of compassion? How about a little understanding from the Democrat party that has taught our children that marriage is not necessary unless a couple is gay? Do they not know the struggle that we real-world parents endure to raise our children to live moral and productive lives in an environment polluted by all the temptations and filth referred to as diversity by the Democrats?

You're right. B. Hussein Obama has experience as a community organizer. The community projects he helped set up are now empty and boarded up. His time in the US Senate consisted mostly of running for president.

I am voting for Rebublicans this year because I listened carefully to Obama's speech. His speech was an apology to America's enemies and critics! Sad day for America!
Observer | 9:25 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Americans should expect better than what has been happening with the McCain selection of Palin. No experience in foreign policy, no experience in federal government, being investigated for ethics violations as a governor, a former member of the Alaska Independent Party which calls for the secession of Alaska, an unwed pregnant 17 year old daughter. What is going on? The only people who support Palin are those people who would vote for her solely on the fact that she shares their religious beliefs. What a shame that American politics have fallen to this point.
Captain Hammer | 9:44 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008

What kind of mother | 10:16 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
I think that it is sad that Palin is sacrificing being a mother to her children (especially a special needs baby that will require a lot of work) and is willing to make her teen age daughter's pregnancy a nation wide issue just for her own political gain! Family is supposed to be the fabric of our country and she is sacrificing it to be in the spot light. What was McCain thinking! Why didn't he think about what he would do to her family?
17 year old dropout? | 10:18 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Shouldn't that 17 year old baby daddy be out looking or working at his job instead of galavanting around at a political convention? What? Are they going to live off the parents like in a welfare state? What a great example, but hey, they are getting married and that fixes everything right? If this was a person of color we would see some pejorative descriptions of that teen unwed mother.
Grimble | 10:22 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Poll results as of Sept. 2:

ARG: Obama 49%, McCain 43%
Gallup: Obama 50% McCain 42%
Rasmussen: Obama 51% McCain 45%
Hotline/Diageo: Obama 48% McCain 39%
CBS: Obama 48% McCain 40%

All margins have widened in Obama's favor since announcement of Palin as VP pick. Yes, Palin has us shaking in our boots -- as we try to contain the laughter.

Bristol's unfortunate pregnancy is the least of the issues.

It's the revelation that Palin turned down the bridge to nowhere but KEPT THE MONEY.

It's the revelation that as mayor of Podunkville she hired lobbyists to get $27,000,000 of federal pork for her 6000 residents.

It's the revelation that she and her husband belonged to the crackpot Alaska Independence Party, a group whose leader expressed hatred for America and our flag and wanted to secede from the union.

No need to pick on poor Bristol when there's so much other low-hanging fruit!

Palin's candidacy is going to go down in history as one of the most spectacular political train wrecks of all time.

To Blaine Nay | 10:22 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
"Has anyone thought about what all this publicity and hostility is doing to 17-year-old Bristol Palin?"

Maybe Bristol's mother should have thought about that before she threw her hat in the ring. How could she not have known this would happen?

Great mother. I guess we see where her priorities are.

This is a mother who has a family at home in desperate need of her attention. She has no business going on an 8 week road trip with an aging politician, especially with a husband who spends every other week away from home.

For the Utah delegates who are LDS, their verbal support of a working mom with a family falling apart at home are contrary to their core beliefs.

She should quietly withdraw and allow McCain to choose someone else.
fool me thrice | 11:06 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Choosing Sarah Palin over Mitt Romney shows that John McCain is just more of the same: incompetent people hired to please the evangelicals.

I feel like a fool because I voted for Bush twice, which is something my teenage kids will never let me forget. I was duped by his fake down-home style, and I actually believed he was a social and economic conservative who would follow a "humble foreign policy," like he promised.

More fool me, Bush has been a disaster for the economy and foreign relations.

This Utah LDS mom will *not* vote for any Republican in 2008. I urge all the women of Utah to vote Obama, for our kids sake, because health, education and jobs are very important family values.
Re: Grimble | 11:12 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
I remember very well the polls during the Reagan election showed that Reagan would lose by a landslide. We all know what happened. Lesson learned; polls are usually wrong! Plus they change and will I predict!

Captain Hammer: All I ever hear from Democrats is how terrible America is! How no one has a job, except rich people. How no one has health care, except the rich. How America is suffering! If you show them proof that they are wrong, the tell us we "just don't get it" or that we are stupid! I call it lies! If you want to believe that about our great country, go ahead, but most Americans won't always buy into their crap!

Working Moms? | 11:49 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Please tell me why it's wrong for Gov. Palin to work, but it's wonderful for Mrs. Obama. She makes way over $300,000 per year, has a full-time housekeeper, two kids at home, and also finds time to visit her personal trainer several times a week. She also attends conventions (along with Senator Biden, who certainly isn't young!)
I have a DS son and I did stay home with him, but many of the mothers of other handicapped children don't and nobody is crucifying them.
Furthermore, having a handicapped child, or even a teenager in trouble, isn't the sign of "failure in the home."
As we have been told many times, it is failure to teach that is the failure--not failure of children to follow those teachings--or have we forgotten the principle of agency? Even God lost 1/3 of His children--do we think we are better than Him?
We may not like Gov. Palin's candidacy, but these peronal attacks are unrighteous, unkind, and unnecessary.
In nearly 50 years of following presidential elections, I have NEVER been less impressed with ANY of the candidates. What has America come to?

Hi Ms. Palin! Hello welcome to (your company name here). We're glad you are interested in our Managing Director position. Hmmm your education is a BS in Journalism from U of Idaho.
Any other formal education? No...
You have been mayor in a town the size of Vernal, UT and governor of a state that has a total population that's about 1/4 the size of the Wasatch front. OK not bad...anything else??

You like to hunt moose, elk, etc? OK...Me too, but how is that suppose to help us?

Yes you are good looking... (pause)...

Yes we want "change" but this seems a little drastic don't you think! But I DO like to hunt moose!

Well the other candidate has a BA in poly sci from U of Delaware and a J.D. from Syacuse (A top 10 law school according to US News).

He's also been on chairman on several judicial and foreign relations committees in the US Senate.

He's been a senator since 1973. He is a good father. His son was a partner in a law firm until elected as attorney general - also a captain in the National Guard (Iraq).

Now tell me about your family...

What a funny argument to be having in the deepest red of all red states!

Looks like McCain's selection of Sarah Palin may have lost him the votes of "Grimble" and "fool me thrice" and a handful of other liberals commenting here. But you can't honestly believe that, regardless of how the rest of the country votes, McCain will receive anything less than 80%, or so of the Utah vote, can you?

Here's a prediction you can take to the bank: None of the frantic blather being trumpeted here by you liberals will have a noticeable effect on Utah voters.

Your problem is, we're not as stupid as you think we are.
To: To Grimble, fool me, et al | 9:32 p.m. Sept. 3, 2008
No, you're 'stupider' than we thought you were.

Our candidates are supposed to represent the best of American 'virtues'. Yes, I know that none of us are perfect, but what was McCain thinking?! He selected a candidate whose own family isn't living up to the 'virtues' she purports to bring to society at large, and is currently under an ethics investigation herself!

Maybe if Utahns started voting with their heads and not by the party of a candidate people wouldn't call you stupid.
To Grimble, fool me, et al | 5:13 a.m. Sept. 4, 2008
That's your problem -- we do vote with our heads. Instead of embracing the dishonest sex, drugs, rock-n-roll crowd blathering about hope and "change we need."

The change we need is a return to decency. There's not the slightest hope of that kind of change in the Democrat party.

I AM A CONSERAVATIVE WOMAN WHO HAS NEVER VOTED DEMOCATE IN HER ADULT LIFE. And today, I switched parites.

If you want to elect this low expecations team, do it. But not with my vote. I will no longer walk lockstep with the so-called Mormon vote. It's time to break free and vote with our heads, not because someone is prettier than the other.

This one flooped all over the place. I won't suport McCain in his first and really BAD decision.

"Failure in the home?" You do realize that a young woman, Bristol, only got pregnant right? She didn't commit armed robbery, adultery, or murder but got pregnant. She chose not to murder the unborn baby. Somehow her choice was the fault of her mother? Did none of you read the story of the prodigal son? Do none of you understand choice? Shocking, absolutely shocking. Had Palin been a man, the issue would have been glossed over.

Describing Palin: Mother, wife, Governor
Describing Obama: Senator. He has a wife and 2 children is sometimes mentioned.

If you cannot see the sexist slant, it is no wonder the glass ceiling remains intact in the U.S.
Here are a couple names you should look up:
Benazir Bhutto
Margaret Thatcher
Cristina Fernndez de Kirchner
Maria Estela Isabel Martinez de Peron
Indira Gandhi
Golda Mer
Mireya Moscoso
Gro Harlem Brundtland
and on and on and on

Okay right off the top. I am voting for neither Obama or McCain. I am appalled by the hypocrisy of those that attack Sarah Palin's parenting skills. Joe Biden stood in his son's hospital room weeks after his wife's death to be sworn in as a Senator. He was only a single parent. I am amazed at how many people are casting stones at Sarah Palin. Where was Bill Clinton,Jimmy Carter's foreign experience or for that matter Barack Obama ? Lame argument there. I am just curious how many women are attacking Sarah Palin if they are the same women who attacked Julie Beck over her conference address ? What is Barack Obama's experience ? Look where he goes to church and the content of his sermons he listens to hello talk about judgement.. So to make sure I understand when Julie Beck says mothers need to be more involved in their children's lives she is archaic. However when a woman decides to serve in public life and have children she is a failure as a mother got it. What bothers people the fact she has five children vs two or she actually gave birth to a down baby ?

I want to know what the Presidential Nominees HAVE TO SAY!!! Don't bad mouth the other party, don't dig up dirt on them, don't try to embarass the other person. I want to hear what they plan to do to dig the U.S out of this hole. The only news articles we read about Palin is about her children and her husband's DUI 20 years ago. I can see it if she's murdered someone, or lied under oath (most of our presidents lately do that to.) Lets just worry about what they can do for our country.

Like I said, McCain gave the American people (in the West) a brand new program to watch. It's called "Little House on the Alaskan Prairie." And believe me, from the sounds of some of the responses on the blogs, that is all it will take to get the sheep (and Moose) back into the barn. Grandpa McCain knows that most of the so-called western family values were dramatized in the Little House series and were emulated by western families everywhere. Sarah Palin reinforces the idea that the West is still the West. People will lose themselves in the drama and tragedy of the Palins while the US and its economy continue to unravel beneath them. Yes, Utah will vote for this series. And no doubt Idaho and a few other states. Involving themselves in this soap-opera will insulate them from the reality they cant seem to face.

I find it a frightening prospect to have a gun-toting mama with 1 1/2 years experience as governor of a not very populated state as the person who might have to lead the country as President should McCain succumb to another bought of Melanoma, a VERY serious cancer. Add this to the fact that he would be the oldest elected President to begin with. Yes, she is pretty...are people really that stupid?
