My Money Says... (1 of 2) | 3:23 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
that if McCain was able to pick a VP based ONLY on experience, he would have picked Romney hands down.

Why do I say that? The rabid anti-Mormons will claim I say that just because I belong to Romney's church. Rubbish. Look at the facts:

McCain wanted somebody who had experience "running something" government related. Romney was a former governor of MA (4 years). And....more than just "running something" in govt, they had to do it successfully. Romney took MA's budget and turned it from a $1.2B defecit to a $.7B surplus and he did it WITHOUT raising taxes ("fees", yes, but "fees" do NOT affect everybody) and then he DECREASED taxes.

McCain wanted someone "successful". Romney has been wildly successful in business (he may have been born to wealthy parents but he didn't inherit $250+M; he EARNED it) AND he completley turned around the SLC Olympics.

McCain wanted someone who was morally/ethically squeakly clean to project honesty and avoid embarassment. Romney filled the bill in spades; a former VOLUNTEER/UNPAID LDS missionary, church congregation (bishop) and multi-congregation (Stake President) leader.

McCain wanted someone smart. Romney's a college valedictorian (BYU), Harvard-educated lawyer/businessman and Baker scholar (top 5%).

More to come...
Barack Hussein Obama II | 3:33 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Obamacon's convention address by Barack Hussein Obama II - He said SWEET, I, Barack Hussein Obama II, would sleep with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and I am sure Bill Clinton already did. Who cares of she's married or even McCain's running mate for VEEP. That's what we like to do, plus fight and steal to. It was bread into us from birth on. By our single mom's. We never had a daddy to teach us right from wrong either. We Dem's know she'll steal mosy all of Hillary's radical feminist votes and women will come out of the woodwork to vote for her and McCain, and I won't win in 2008 or ever. But I, Barack Hussein Obama II just don't care about anyone but Barack Hussein Obama II. Perhaps even I will vote for President McCain and her to. And I ask all you other liberal's to vote for McCain also along with me. He deserves to be President, not me.

Ho Ho Ho | 3:33 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
"Choosing a woman to pander to Clinton voters isn't "smart"--it's transparent".

OK...OK...it's transparent. They're ALL transparent. These blogs are transparent. Obama had no choice...Choose Hilary and lose the swinging republicans that he needs. McCain had no choice...Romney was a death sentence, Fred Thompson is too good of an actor...the rest of them actually WANTS to be VP, which is scary itself. If it 100% transparent...that will still be the case in a couple weeks. Only great thing about an election istime WILL tell.

re: Tom Pittman | 3:34 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Tom, you are absolutely right. I wasn't going to vote for McCain if he dissed Romney and picked one of the other names that has been coming up.

However, I am happy with the Palin pick. It is nice to have someone who is not a senator on the ticket. Everyone knows that senators make lousy presidents (McCain included) but he made a smart choice here going with a real person and not a lifetime politician.

I think I can finally come to terms with voting for McCain even without Romney. 'Course Romney should still be given at top spot in the cabinet come January - Secretary of State or Homeland Security would be ideal.
utahboni | 3:39 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
If he was going to pick a woman, why didn't he choose one with experience? Kay Bailey Hutchinson or even Condi comes to mind. The republicans must think women are complete idiots. Is there anyone in their right mind who wants a former beauty pagent contestant and sportscaster with her empty headed finger on a nuclear trigger?
Poor Mitt, he's been out there stumping for McFool desparately hoping for a VP nomination. I almost feel sorry for him.
Trolls Among Us? | 3:40 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I wonder how many "I was for McCain until he picked Palin" comments are really from Obama supporters posing as McCain supporters? Their hope being to swoon McCain-ites to Obama.

Come on, get real. Palin's a hard core conservative. It is doubtful that this would any McCain supporters switch sides. True, some Repubs may not like the choice, but to defect to someone as liberal as Obama over THIS?

Doubtful.
Money-G | 3:41 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Wow, McCain/Palin. It just doesn't resonate as good as Obama/Biden. I think the country is ready for a Black man or a woman as Commander and Chief, but not at the same time. Change is inevitable and even the highest office in the land will not escape it. But the Black man has always been the biggest fear for the "old guard" and that is why he will occupy the oval office first and then a women, and then a Mexican American, etc. The speech Obama recited was extrodinary and his defense of his lack of experience and toughness was outstanding. Even the Maverick want be able to bounce back from it. However, the race will still be a close one. McCain will be defeated in the end, but it will be fun watching these two and now four jockeying for the American peoples vote. Go ahead president Abama.
Hmmm | 3:43 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
The more I read about her, the more I like her. I think McCain hit a homerun by choosing her. Mitt, Mike and Tim just seemed like the best to choose from but where really nothing special. In Nov we will be voting for the top of the ticket anyways, anyone who votes for who is VP needs to get their heads checked.

Did she ever go to college?
Please, Utah, think about it | 3:48 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I wish that everyone would listen to Obama's speech during the Democratic Convention. It truly was inspiring. We finally have a candidate that is not in it for money, power, or business. His thoughts on serving in the community, education, investing in a high-tech America, taking care of Americans, ending dependence on oil, and leading the world responsibly are just what our great country needs. Unfortunately, Utah's unwavering support of Bush these past 8 years has certainly hurt our credibility, but we can change that. McCain has mocked and belittled our religion and beliefs and has shown poor judgment consistently for over 20 years. Now we have the chance to vote for someone who can get us back on the right track as a country. Please beware of pride and do not let it stop you from voting for a Democrat.
Awesomeron | 3:49 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Ref: To Ronald Young. Real change would be Direct Election of the President by popular vote, the way it should be not the way it is. The situation is not if the candidate for Repub V.P. stand up to the job of being President is can the Dem Candidate at the top of the ticket with no experience stand up to being President. The Obamanation should scare you worse then anything or anyone McCain can come up with. Everyone disrespects Alaska, but the GNP of Alaska is Huge. Alaska may only have 600-700 thousand people in it mostly either White or Eskimo or part of each. Mostly because it is very, very, cold 24/7. I have only been there once briefly as the Plane going to Vietnam stopped to refuel. We dressed in our Summer Khaki Class A's where permitted to disembark into the Airport. I was happy when the plane took off again. They do not print enough money for me to ever live there. The only thing I might question is her Sanity for living in 50 degree below 0 weather. Now the 23 hours of darkness maybe. Depends on who your with.

She's not a lawyer, so she gets my vote! Seriously though, we all know the scenario where we're all sitting around talking about voting Obama if...or voting McCain if... or "I'm so tired of all these politicians saying all these things and then doing nothing". Well she WILL ACCOMPLISH much when she is elected. She is in NO ONES pocket. She works for the people, not the oil co's. She supports some oil drilling but in the publics interest, not the oil executives. She will make the oil co's toe the line if in fact they actually get their drilling. She will do her best to make sure they pay their fair share both of remediation and royalties! She's the best thing that happened to politics since Roosevelt!! Bar none

To Steve @ 2:48 and Re Capt Smash @ 3:07,

I'm surprised that all these Republicans aren't getting whiplash from the bootlegger turn they've just made! 24 hours ago, Obama's supposed inexperience was his greatest liability. Now, suddently, Palin's inexperience is her greatest asset!

The population of Obama's state senate district in Illinois was FORTY TIMES larger than the population of Wasilla. He's now been a national senator longer than Palin's been governer of a sparsely populated state. How many millions of mayors across the country have equal or greater "executive experience" than Palin?

Since arriving in the Senate, Obama has secured loose nukes, fought contracts corruption, worked on national emergency response, and spearheaded the most sweeping congressional ethics reform package in a decade.

If you're worried about our country's security, imagine something happening to McCain and Palin stepping in to take on some diplomatic crisis with China, India, Pakistan, Russia, etc. What's she going to do? Sic the sled-dogs on the bad guys?

Get real.

Can you honestly tell me that there is someone out there in society who will ever be ready for anything in this life? Isn't life itself is a big stage for infinitive learning?

She is not a Washington DC insider and that's one thing I like about her being the pick for GOP VP. She is to going to learn the ropes hands on and I'm sure the big wigs in DC will try to intimidate her but I'm sure she will stand her grounds. The best of luck to her and way to go McCain for suprising us all.

Just because Palin's family could not afford to send her to Stanford or Yale you should not rip on her.
The only way she was able to afford to go to the University of Idaho was with the scholarship she got from being in the Miss Alaska pageant.
She has been governor for nearly two years. That is more experience as an executive in a government than any other candidate in this race has.
A full time mother of only 4 | 4:07 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I'm all for women in leadership. I honestly think they can lead as well or better than any man. But if you have 5 children to nurture, one of which is 4 mo old, that is a FULL time job. If you then take on governing a state and running for Vice President of a nation, you are now a former mother who subcontracts most all your duties. How can this be the symbol of conservative values and mothers? She just abandoned her family for "far more important" or pressing things. How can she be a voice for the difficulties of motherhood or the "cost of groceries"? I sincerly doubt you would ever find her draging her 5 kids through any grocery store. Its a thinly veiled hypocracy popular in the world today.

Romney will be given the task of getting the economy back on track if McCain is elected.
Good news for Bob Barr | 4:11 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
This pick underlines the cynicism of mainstream politics. Bob Barr will be one beneficiary. The former congressman from Georgia is already polling more than 10% in New Hampshire and Nevada, and when Utahns understand his positions they will flock to support him as well. Obama and McCain are both part of the problem. Both act like Hollywood celebrities and are more concerned with image and obfuscating on issues than on the American people. Bob Barr seems to have a great deal more substance than either of them.
SteveB | 4:14 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Sarah Palin's no Ron Paul, but she does admire congressman Paul, which says something about her convictions. She likely won't be perfect on the issues that matter most -- the Constitution chiefest among them -- but her alleged lack of experience doing things the way Washington inisders do things is a plus in my book. Plus, ya gotta love a candidate, woman or no, who really walks the walk on gun rights and abortion. Who knows, she may give jaded insider McCain a bit of an education.
romneyfan | 4:12 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I am a big Romney fan but I have to say I am thrilled with McCains pick in Palin. I think she brings a great counter punch to the ticket and will prove herself over the next few weeks. It was risky but in the end I think it will pay off big time for the republicans and for America!

McCain/Palin 08!
John Pack Lambert | 4:12 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
To 9:43,
Palin has lived the principals she teaches. Abortion issues are not some abstract idea, but the reality of having a Down Syndrome child, having her husband go back to work at his wage job on the north slope so they have enough money and dealing with people who have never done a manual labor job in their life claim that this somehow creates a conflict of interest for her dealings with the oil industry.
What is the point of dealing with issues in the Middle East if we are slaughtering innocents in our own country just because we do not want the inconvience of raising a child who has Down Syndrome.
I have known wonderful people with Down Syndrome. The fact that it is teated as reason for a death sentance is outrageous.
Just wondering | 4:13 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
How soon will someone ask her to spell 'potato'?
Dems, get real! | 4:16 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
High profile Dems are attacking Palin as, and I quote, "a mayor of a 3,000 person town with zero foreign policy experience".

Come on, guys, knock off the mischaracterizing statements!

Like it or not, (and it's obvious you don't like it or you wouldn't try to alter it) she is a governor of one of the 50 states in the union. A governor, not a beauty queen, not a fisherman (or "fisherwoman" for the uptight PC crowd), not a mayor....a governor. That's like being a President of a state. (Ow, I bet that hurt!)

Yes, in the past, she's been all those things. However, NOW she is a GOVERNOR.

Would you like it if the GOP painted your man Obama as a college student?

He WAS one, so why not say he is one now?

Because it's deceptive and you know it. If I were a Dem, I'd make some phone calls to local Dem offices and request that your leadership knock it off because you're only making your party look childish.
Change? | 4:24 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Obama wants Change like the rest of his ilk, well we's got it. he can change his address to HOMELESS! McCain/Palin will totally clean house on this one. As thenex 67 days go on you will see that Palin is no pushover, to flipper, and no rascist. Oh, by the way, she is not afraid of wearing a skirt while trouncing big oil, men wil 'little men' syndrome, or taking care of her 5 children. "How many does obama have? 2? Oh she's got a ton more experience there, too!

Now, does the Alaska State Tooper (ex Brother in law) go as far as getting a $1.3 Million dollar home on dirty money? Does it go as far as being in the presence of Jeremiah Wright or having Bill Ayers as your biggest backer? Hardly!
John Pack Lambert | 4:21 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I have to apologize about my statement on Palin's time as governor. She has been governor for nearly two years. She was elected in 2006. I am not sure how I made the miscalculation I did, but would like to greatly apologize for it.
I would also like for people to come out and address why they hate Palin and love Hillary. Palin has been a mayor. She has been governor. She has held more elcted offices than Hillary every did.
I am of the opinion that most of the attacks on Palin are masks for something else.
Why those who hate Palin really do not like is that she is a committed Christian, that she is pro-life, that she opposes the legalization of same-gender marriage, and in some cases possibly that she is a whistle blower who represents fighting corruption.
Some of the attacks here may just be from mean spirited people, but these factors are the real issues.
It is people's political positions that you consider when voting on candidates. Experience is nice but there are reasons why Kucinich never wins despite the fact he has experiences no one else has.
To all the... | 4:22 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
People who say it's all over: are you for real?

Please read something about this lady, she is very experienced, been the executive of a Government. More than Obama and Biden, two of the most liberal Senators in corrupted Washington. She is honest, has 5 kids, represents small America, its a GENIUS choice!

I like to think that America will study who the candidates are, but seeing how people say, "throw in the towel" already, I'm afraid that isn't so. Really afraid.

If anything, study Obama's crooked ways, that'll convince you to vote for anyone but him.
What Now | 4:23 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
McCain threw Romney under the Bus. Why do you think? It's time Utah realized we'd be much better off with the Democrats than with the Evangelical controlled GOP.

Man, did you ever hit the nail on the head with this?

Liberals; they shout love and fair play until you do something that might cause them to sacrifice...
Great Pick | 4:24 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
For those people saying McCain is "pandering to women",,,well duh. Wasn't Biden supposed to appeal to blue collar workers and add exp to the ticket. Palin can attract disgruntled Hillary supporters and Independent women voters, she also appeals to blue collar and conservitives. McCain's doesn't need exp, he has plenty but you can argue that Palin is as exp as Obama and actually brings executive exp to the ticket.

VP picks are ment to be strategic imo, I think picking Palin is a great choice.
Yahooooo!!!!!!!!!! | 4:26 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I hope Obama sees what "Change" really is. I haven't been this excited since the invention of the wheel!! We have been crying to have someone besides the "Good-Ole-Boy" establishment running this country. This could be a start of a campaign to kick the bums out, I hope all the house of rep's and senators hold on tight, we might all get to see the real definition of the word "Change". I can't wait to learn more about this very brave lady. Go get em!!!!!!
John Pack Lambert | 4:28 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Kucinich has the unique experience of having presided over the largest city in a state going bankrupt.
Palin destroyed the bridge to nowhere project by refusing to accept the federa funding for it.
On my point about people hating her because she exposed corruption. Normally someone who is a wage earner for a ompany is not considered to have any policy control. Yet people in Alaska actually made a fuss about her husband going back to work at a bottom of the system operator job. He was not over anyone in this job.
It also strikes me as unfair. Husbands work, to expect them not to is bizarre. Plus when you have five kids, one who has many special needs, you need all the income you can get.
Anyway, with this attitude is there any job that Mr. Palin could have taken that would not lead to complaints. The thing the complainers ignore is that the reason people claim conflict is because oil is the big industry in Alaska.
Those complaints make as much sense as if people here in Michigan complained about some "conflict of interest" because our governor's husband worked on an assembly line at Ford.

TOP 5 REASONS SARAH PALIN SHOULD NOT BE VICE PRESIDENT

#1: Palin opposes a woman's right to choose what to do with her own body, opposing the right to an abortion even for rape victims.

#2: Palin believes that Creationism should be taught in public schools, which runs both counter to well-settled evolutionary science, and to the Constitutional separation of church and state.

#3: Palin is a global warming denier, who (as with her views on evolution) has expressed skepticism about the well-settled science.

#4: Palin opposes listing polar bears as an endangered species, because it means oil and gas companies might have to be just a little bit careful out there.

#5: Palin is rabidly dedicated to drilling in the Artic wildlife refuge, known as ANWR.
Mc Who?? | 4:34 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I thought that McCain might have been the best vote until today's decision.

NOW I HAVE RESERVATIONS. Why would Mc...? choose an unknown. Alaska may be the biggest state physically, BUT certainly Not a big state Politically or Population wise!!

Look like to me that Mc... is trying to Pander to those who are upset about Hillary being left off the Dem. Ticket. The ??? part is that Hillary was a Democrat with a certain set of beliefs. If McC.??'s "Hillary" is true to the same values
then there is no Republican Party anymore.

What a person will DO and COMPROMISE just to get ratings and votes is amazing.

I WAS a McC.?? supporter, but now it looks like I'm going to vote for Obama. I believe he is TRUER to his values that PANDERING to another set of values.

SHAME on McC..???. There's still a couple of months to go before the day of voting, but I'm coming to the conclusion the McC.?? is a person of
Questionable character and Judgement. Condoleeza
Rice might have been a good choice. She's a proven
person, but an unknown???

No Mitt, most likely NO Vote for McC.???

Looks like possible Brain Damage.

Having come from Alaska where you gotta be tough just to survive. So where does McCain go, how about up North where the air is cold, and the women can be tough as nails, drop dead gorgeous, and Ivy league smart. Governor Sarah Palin is a gal who while 8 months pregnant honored a commitment to speak at a event in Texas, went into labor, finished her speech, jumped on a jet with a doctor, and punched out her 5th kid, now that takes chops.

She has kicked butt and taken names, and virtually eliminated the remotest aroma of corruption. She has seen to it that even long term GOP elected officials were investigated, tried and convicted and now sit in Alaska prisons. Like "Sarah Connor" of the terminator, she has taken on the establishment including the Federal Government trying to get oil fields open and the new Natural Gas pipeline built to help reduce US dependence on foreign oil. And finally given her age, she will be the first female president of the United States.

Steve | 4:40 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Its kind of strange how, up till now, one of McCain's primary arguements is how Obama is too young and doesnt have enough experience to lead our country. And now, he turns around and chooses a vice president who is THREE YEARS YOUNGER than him. Kind of self contradictory.
randy | 4:40 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
congrats obama .. enjoy the white house
John Pack Lambert | 4:40 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Some of you people have accepted the latest theory of identifying with like people too much.
Anyone who has bothered to understand any of Hillary's political positions and supported her based on any of these will oppose Palin. They are the opposites.
Hillary is a liberal who waffles when it helps, but is for abortion at every moment of pregnancy in any way and opposes parental consent laws, wants to give virtual recognition to same gender marriage if not full recognition and on and on.
Palin is a pro-lifer who has walked the walk and not just talked the talk. She understands that marriage must continue to be defined as between a man and a woman.
Choosing Palin is a move to energize the women who hate Hillary. It is a move as I have said that appeases the Evangelical Christians without alientating the Mormons.
Palin is a supporter of responsible government and limited government. As mayor of Wassila she reduced her own salary. True, Mitt took no salary as governor of Massachusetts, but his wife never had to take a job to make ends meet.
Another thing, Palin has a son in the military. Two things Hilary lacks.
Affirmative Action | 4:44 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
This election is all about affirmative action! Democrats choose Sen. Obama and now McCain chooses Gov. Palin. His VP nomination had to have either an ethnic background or be a woman. Pretty soon it wont be politically correct to be a white man in politics.

The good new? Bush can't run again... yeah!!!
McCain? | 4:45 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I am a republican, and what I see has happened in our country with GWB and his people, I have to change my vote this year without question.

Obama came from nothing and worked his way up like so many of us average working folk in this country.
Only Obama made it to the top, and he has not forgot where he came from either.

He is our only hope. The God, Guns, and Gay argument will not fix anything except the ranks and ego trips of the far far right wing religious radicals.
I dont believe in abortion either, but in some cases it would be necessary. I certainly know the Bush had eight years to change Roe vs Wade but he could do nothing.

Why vote for the same junk thinking again.
I wont!
Hey Grimble | 4:49 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Obama is only up 4 points after the DNC convention? After several weeks of nothing but Obama news? I wouldn't be bragging about that. If he can't get more than a 2 point bounce after the ridiculous amount of money spent on the convention, that is a huge embarrassment and plenty of reason to be VERY nervous.
Alaska and Hawaii | 4:50 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I never thought I would ever see anyone from these two states on Presidential ticket ever. Kind of refreshing.
John Pack Lambert | 4:54 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
to 11:50,
Kay Bailey Hutchinson would have cost McCain much of the pro-life vote. She is pro-abortion, or at least not really pro-life, that would have really caused him to loose his base.
Anyway, he needed a running mate who was a common person.
The investigation against the governor is a bunch of rubbish. If the details are true as you say them, I suspect that she knew plenty of reasons why her ex-brother-in-law needed to be fired from the state police and saw the actions of the head as indicating he did not believe in disciplining the force. I also strongly believe she had other reasons to fire him.
Your whole argument is barely better than the rubbish about some conflict because her husband is a bottom rung worker for an oil company.
Anonymous | 4:56 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Before you all open your mouth about Palin, do some research! Compare her views and experience to Obama's and she becomes better than Obama with or without McCain!
