This pick is a master stroke by the McCain machine. She has red-state, blue collar appeal; comes from regular folks..wasn't born with the silver spoon like Flip; has a son serving in Iraq, unlike Flip; everything about this is a win-win.

Finally, to get it out of the way...I've been telling y'all for months that Flip wasn't going to be the president or the vice president. I hate to say "I told you so...", but...there it is. Now let's all get behind McCain-Palin and get this horrible Obama out of our hair.

Political Correctness gone amuck. Republicans and Democrats alike. Hence, we have two weak tickets.

Get out a quarter and do a coin toss....we still lose, yet pay the bills.

One ticket is old with a no-experience partner. One has color but no experience and a old and Washington Insider who is a one sided partisan.

Tough choice. Thank Heaven for the right to pray ...........we'll need to.
Wow | 2:21 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Oboma just won this election on VP strength versus VP strength alone. Is there a more unpopulated state in the union than Alaska? And she hadn't even completed one term as Governor. This is truly amazing. He needed someone with more substance to balance his maverick streak just like Obama picked someone who provided a nice balance. Mcain probably couldn't have chosen someone more unqualified to potentially step into the role of commander and chief if he had tried. A child with a disability does not a commander in chief make. Nor does absolutely anything on her resume. This is truly a bazarre pick. And we Mormons ought to get it by now. It's pretty much "thanks Romney for all your help - we love you Mormons when we need you but in reality we don't really like you".

To "Hey Libs,"
Hate to break it to you, but the new Gallup tracking poll has Obama's lead widening to 8 points. Rasmussen has him up by 4. I don't know if you realized this, but the phone-in surveys on Faux news aren't actual polls.

To "Navel Gazing,"
Don't be ridiculous. Of course nobody has a problem with her being a woman. We have a problem with her because two years ago she was the snow plow dispatcher for Wasilla, Alaska, and her only foreign policy experience is being across the strait from Russia!

Also, I personally have a problem with the fact that her stance on abortion is farther to the right than the LDS Church's. She doesn't think abortion should be allowed in cases where a dad rapes his daughter.
To Naval Gazing | 2:24 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
To Naval Gazing on the Left: We're not complaining - we're laughing our be-hinds off. Not because he chose a woman, but that he chose THAT woman! He's out of his mind. Good thing he won't have to use that mind after November 4th. HAHA... I LOVE his choice!
Kirsten | 2:25 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I think the selection of Palin makes sense. But I think McCain will reward Romney when he wins by selecting him as Secretary of the Treasury. That will help him get experience before the Palin - Romney fight for the 2012 nominee.

I wasn't confident about voting for McCain before, but now I'm definitely going to vote for him. Sarah Palin in my kind of woman (unlike Hillary who paraded herself around like a man in a pantsuit). This woman is the real deal...a washington outsider who hasn't been tainted by the same people Obama and Biden have been tainted by. If McCain were to croak in office, I would feel really good about having her take his place...she is awesome!

I was born and raised in Alaska and moved to Utah 2 years ago to be near our 3 children going to college here.

While the rest of the United States scrambles to figure out who on earth Sarah Palin is, Joe Biden is about to find out what us Alaskans have known for years:

Sarah Palin chews up and spits out good ole boys (like Senator Biden) like last years moose jerky.

Sarah Palin handily defeated an incumbent governor Frank Murkowski. Murkowski left the US Senate to take the governor's job, but he was no match at all for Sarah.

This is one capable woman.

Like many Utahans, I was hoping it would be Mitt, but I'm thrilled it's Sarah.

Soon Utah and the rest of the US will figure out that Sarah Palin is a Reagan Republican in ever way, with the added benefit of being environmentally friendly.

This is a good thing for America.
Grimble | 2:31 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008

2012? Does that mean you think McCain's going to win in 2008, but then step down or have a stroke or something?

Watch the federal bureaucrats run for cover when McCain/Palin are elected. Watch the lobbyists squirm back to wherever they came from. Ethics reform is already handled when McCain/Palin are elected! Palin is the best thing that could happen to either party. She is somebody who REALLY wants to serve the public and not try to benefit herself. Nothing could shake up Wash. D.C. better than Palin.
CKS | 2:36 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I was shocked with this choice. I didn't think that someone who impressed me would be selected. Did Palin hand the White House to McCain? No. But I do believe this will be an actual race instead of a race for the Democrats to loose (like they did in 2004).

To those of you reading, please check out your candidates on the issues that concern you the most. Ask them questions (email is wonderful for this) since these people are basically in a job interview with you as the boss. I always get scared when people just look for the 'D' or the 'R' behind someone's name when deciding on a candidate to vote for.
Dear Tom: | 2:36 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
So when you and your children left Alaska did the population decrease by something like half?

Does it really matter what goes on the middle of nowhere--somewhere endangered birds outnumber people.

Come on: 3 electoral votes, people. That is even less than Utah
Hey Capt Smash | 2:37 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Obama was an affirmative admission at Harvard and graduated in the bottom half of his class. Why do you think he is so dependent upon that teleprompter.

Obama continues to fall in the polls. McCain by a landslide!
Sara Smile | 2:37 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008

We're thinking too short-sighted here, folks!

Just in case McCain and Palin don't win in 2008, let's look ahead to 2012. Mitt will get the Republican nomination, and he'll pick DIANNE M. KELLER, CURRENT MAYOR OF WASILLA, ALASKA as his running mate.

I wonder if she knows the difference between Sunni and Shia?
Lee | 2:42 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
McCain has officially lost my vote. With all of the flaring World crisis (Russia re-asserting itself in Georgia, the de-stabilization of Pakistan, Iran, etc..) the last thing we need is an old, frail president with an inexperienced VP a heart attack away from taking over.

I didn't trust McCain in the first place. There is a lot of talk about him crossing the aisle to work with the Democrats. The trick is trying to get him to come back to the Republicans. It never happens.
Robinson | 2:46 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I have never voted democrat until this election. There is a faction of the republican party that has taken the LDS vote for granted. McCain in numerous subtle ways played the religion card during the primaries. McCain is a Republican with Bill Clinton's moral values. Even though I do not agree with all of Obamas views, I think he has a lot more character than McCain. I will vote for Obama.
Grimble Reaper | 2:46 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Hey Grim...you act as though today's polls mean anything. Let's invite you back in 10 days...I know this lady...she is going to shock and awe you and your libbies. Great line with the foreign policy jab though...considering all of Obama's experience. I do think he once took world history in high school though.

nottyou | 2:47 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I'm pleased with the selection. A first-term Governor as a VP pick is a smarter choice than a first-term senator as a presidential candidate. At least Palin has a list of accomplishments...what accomplishments does Obama have? Please, someone list 4 or 5 of his accomplishments as a senator.
Steve | 2:48 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
What a tremendous choice.

Susan Palin has more experience setting policy, handling payroll, and making decisions than Obama, McCain and Biden combined.

They've legislated. None have run anything.

Being the mayor of a small town means you have to deal with people's concerns face-to-face --- roads, economic development, and crime.

Heading the Alaska commission that oversees the oil companies is a position fraught with the twin dangers of big money and big lobbyists. Yet, Palin cleaned out the corruption and focused on what was good for the people of Alaska.

As Governor, she cut spending, targeted corruptions and required ethical standards.

Her record is impressive. Many will make fun of her lack of Washington experience. Yet, she has been a bigger pro-family, pro-people reformer than almost the entire U.S. Congress.

She knows what it is like to pay bills, juggle family concerns and stand up for principles. She'll be the first woman to be V.P. This is a great day for the USA.

I'm enthused by this choice. Way to go John McCain!
To Grimble | 2:49 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Her personal views on abortion are IRRELEVANT. We have had Bush, A Republican for 8 years and abortion is still safe and legal because the Supreme Court ALREADY ruled on the issue years and years ago. What you might find interesting is how Obama voted regarding the Baby Born Alive Protection Act. He voted against it, even though Naral Prochoice America had no complaints. Do you really think that nurses should be forced to do nothing when an abortion fails and the baby is born alive? Fortunately he was the only opposition again, not even Naral opposed the bill.

Thank you for securing the election for Obama.

I cannot imagine she could be less competent that Bush is (and I am a Republican).

That said, should the old geezer take a dirt nap, I cannot envision her as being capable of dealing with the likes of Putin, Al Quaeda (sp?), or Iran. I thought the same thing of Bush by the way but was told "not to worry, he will surround himself with smart, capable people."

As a democratic woman, I'm so glad McCain had the courage to select Gov. Palin as his running mate. Obama talks a big talk when it comes to women's rights, but when it came right down to it, he showed his true colors and selected a man over Hillary. I am so ready to vote for McCain/Palin!

Great Pick McCain. I am so glad that you didn't go for the normal Washington Insider lawyer. You got someone who actually can think for herself, and not like the sniveling democraps. She fishes, has 5 kids, and even has her own float plane, and all Obama can vouch for is $1 Million Mansion that he needed help in buying. To those of you who are quickly finding yourself trying to scramble for OBama I really feel sorry for your stupidity. Maybe our publik skule sistim is rreely failng us nw.
Re Capt Smash | 3:07 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
It is pretty sad when you have to compare your top of the ticket to your opponents number 2 inorder to highlight his experience. Even though Obama is on the Foreign relations comittee, he still hasn't had a meeting or done anything with it lol. With that in mind, Obama has no FOREIGN POLICY EXP either. McCain has tons of exp both domestic and foreign, Palin has executive exp. Neither of the democrats have any executive exp.

Palin has been a member of the City Council, a Mayor, Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and Governor. Looks a lot more impressive than Community organizer and state senator and 3 years in the US Senate (which he spent most of his time running for Pres). Palin is an Ethics reformer, fought corruption in the Repub party in Alaska and fought pork barrel projects in her own state (bridge to nowhere). Most importantly, she has made decisions that have had a direct impact on her state and is a proven leader in her short political career.

You listed a bunch of postions obama has held but you never listed anything he has accomplished.
also an alaskan | 3:12 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I think that McCain made the dumbest choice. Palin is a horrible choice. her sister got divorced and Palin decided to get back at her ex-brother-in-law by trying to get him fired from his state trooper job (Highway patrol down in utah). The leader of the troopers said, no way, he is a fine officer and hasn't done anything wrong and doesn't deserve to be fired. Beloved Sarah had the boss fired and then got rid of her ex-brother-in-law. Nepotism is alive and well in the great white north. Is this the kind of person we want leading our country if McCain can't????
Change | 3:11 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
A first I was thinking that McCain just lost the presidency, but now I am liking the choice. Palin seems like she knows how to run things. I have heard mostly good things about her.

If it were up to me, I think I would like to see a presidential ticket made of people who know how to get things done and who aren't corrupted by years of service in government.

I think I would have liked an Obama/Palin ticket : )
Saro no Farraro | 3:13 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008

Re: Grimble | 3:16 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
The new poll showing NObama's 8 point lead comes at the end of the 'rat convention- a predictable bounce. The 2 point lead from earlier in the week that I mentioned came right after the Biden announcement which shows that his announcement actually hurt NObama. Take your liberalism to Iran.

Jason Chaffetz met with Gov. Palin a few weeks ago. I was interested in his comments..

She understands western issues, energy issues and issues important to sportsmen, Chaffetz said. This choice bodes well for Utah.

Chaffetz had the opportunity to meet with Palin for about an hour during his recent visit to ANWR. I was exceptionally impressed with her poise in the face of tough media questions and the way she was representing the State of Alaska as Governor, Chaffetz said.
