Gave Away Election | 12:37 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Less than 70 days to for people to get to know Sarah. It doesn't matter how good she is. John McCain just gave away the election. I'd be amazed if the election is even close. This will be the worst blow out ever.
B | 12:37 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
This is perfect. Everyone who is voting for Obama because he's a historic first can rethink it.
Doug in Louisiana | 12:40 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
McCain's next move is to go home and retire. I would hope Palin would do a good job, but can the U.S. have Palin, Hillary and Pelosi in Washington, is there more? Going to just be a big Cat fight.

Very Smart | 12:41 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
That McCain is one smart dude. I will gurantee that the majority of these blogs that slam Palin have NO idea who she is. Knowledge is power and many Obama fans are lacking knowledge they are only voting because he is black.
lost in DC | 12:44 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I see most of the comments about Romney are from liberals and other Mormon haters going Nyah Nyah Nyah, showing their great maturity.

I saw that a writer for Newsweek opined that if we don't elect BO, we are racist. Since Palin has a child with Down's Syndrome, does that mean if we don't elect McCain & Palin that we harbor prejudice against the disabled?
Pro-Palin | 12:47 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I agree with the postings of Kathryn and Demublican in CA. I wasn't going to vote for McCain until I read his selection of running mate this morning --- here is someone not entrenched in same ol', same ol' Washington politics, and some one who resonnates with the American people. A family-centered, value-driven, accomplished woman! One who personally made an anti-abortion choice after she learned her own son would be born with Down syndrome! She has my support and my utmost respect. My best to you, Gov. Palin!!!
Whinocrats | 12:51 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
What a bunch of terrified democrats. You know this was pure genius. So she's one bullet away from the big office? I guess you think Biden should be there. He's volatile, emotional, and hot headed. This girl can handle 5 kids, Eskimo kissing, not afraid to "call out" those in her own party. Can't wait to see her and Joe loser in a debate. She is going to embarrass him if he's not careful. So she smoked pot (rumor at best)? I'd probably get high if I had to live in the dark 6 months a year.
Reality hurts | 12:52 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I'm a Utah native living on the Left Coast. I have family who are LDS. I don't hate them. I really dislike Mitt. The DN is a great source of humor. You never read about who belongs to what church here. Fifty-four percent of use have no problem with gay marriage. We have it now. I see the sky.

Is fascinates me. It's like the GOP is your enabler that always ends up rejecting you. Reid as never been rejected or denied a position because he is Mormon. No liberal knocked his testimony in his book. You hate democrats.

The GOP cast Utah republicans crumbs. You're right. You are a curious people. I never noticed this living in Utah. Then, you told people you where in the Seventh Ward and people knew where you lived. Here, I've heard about cults, not being a biblical Christian and others things. So, I've come to expect Mormons are suspect to many Christian fundamentalist in control of the GOP. Keep trying, you may convert them. It has worked for non Mormons in SLC.
What a great pick | 12:57 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Man I did not see that coming. But, if you think about it, I believe that this is a great choice. She brings a lot to the table, and yes I know she is an unknown but if you research what she has done for Alaska you can see why this is a great pick. I think that this pick is very refreshing. I liked Mitt but I think that she is a better pick.
Sullivan | 12:57 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Gov. Palin has one year on the job running a state with a population less than that of Salt Lake County. (Good to lock up those three electoral votes, though. Who knew Alaska was a swing state?)

She's the person who'd lead the free world if McCain's age catches up with him?

I don't think so.

I appreciate what the GOP is trying to do in terms of reaching out to women voters, but this is such an obvious, cynical and phenomenally stupid move!

The Biden vs Palin debate is going to be a hoot.

After last night's close of the Democratic National Convention, my thought was that McCain would need to really start knocking balls over the fence, consistently, if he was to have a chance of defeating Obama. Today's announcement of his running mate is the equivalent a weak pop-up fly that's going to be snagged by the pitcher, probably with is hat.
Great Move | 12:58 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I am a Mormon and was hoping for Mitt, but couldn't be more excited about Palin as McCains pick. The more I learn about her integrity and her ability and courage to stand up against the powers who take advantage of the people she serves does my heart good. Go McCain and Palin ...you have my vote.
Sharp and a real person! | 12:59 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I watched Palin's speech today, and she is great. Unlike the other politicians who claim to fight for the blue collar workers, she LIVES in a blue collar family. Unlike the other politicians who talk and talk, she has achieved results. She is a leader in government, not 'just' a representative in government. Living her principles. Refreshing! NOW I'm excited to vote for McCain.

PS - McCain is a ferocious debater. Obama is a weak debater. Once the debates begin, Obama will start to slide. YES HE CAN! PARTRIDGE FAMILY! (oops, I meant EIGHT IS ENOUGH! silly Obama).
Former Alaskan | 1:05 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Sarah is an excellent choice. She is a no nonsense leader. She unseated the Governor who appointed his own daughter to his Senate seat. She does without a driver and a chef as Governor. Watch for big things to happen.
Nate | 1:06 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
This entries are almost comical! If you truly believe Romney would have a chance at VP, then you need to expand your horizons. Face it, majority of Americans are not Mormon, and will not vote for a mormon. As for Palin, she is going to be great! Why? Because she can go to Washington without any strings attached. She hasn't been entrenched in the politics of DC, and can go to DC with a commanding title of VP. Now that is CHANGE! If you think you are so smart to judge someone's experience to hold a public office, then run for an office yourself! Truth is, most of you that comment in here don't have the slightest idea how to lead. So give her a chance to prove. It's only four years. After all, the earth is warming and we will all be a ball of fire is a few years so it really doesn't matter who is elected. Right?
@ really hurts 12:52pm | 1:08 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
It really hurts my brain reading a comment like this?
Well, I am really glad to see McCain pick this fine female to be his running mate. Now the only people you will see running are the Democrats. Running for cover.
To R guy | 1:13 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I can't believe how brain washed you are. You actually believe the President controls the economic success or failure of our country? Check again...its your congressman and senator first...big business second...global economy impact third. Clinton did squat. What economic move did he make all by himself (other than bring up the value of cigars) that you can state was of his own making? I don't give Reagan credit either, except for knocking the walls in Europe down, and scaring Russia as much as you democrats are with the VP pick!
james in Utah | 1:15 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Sorry McCain.........You just lost my vote! and many thousands more in the intermountain states, not to mention a chance to win the election.

Bad choice. you had better options
CP | 1:19 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
As a lady from Utah.. I think Sarah Palin is an awesome choice and not because she's a lady either. Good pick McCain and good luck to both of you! You have my vote for sure! Now I feel a little more secure in this coming election.
kit | 1:29 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
we all complain for change and then McCain picks someone with out "experience" without the corruption we lable as exoerience and we complain. People this is how change happens. Out with old in with the new!
Alaska 08 | 1:30 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Breaking news: McCain has now secured Alaska's 3 electoral votes. This is a bold strategy by the self-styled maverick--to cement his place in a state that was already leaning GOP.
Hey, Songbird Johnny | 1:30 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
No, thanks -- don't want you, and don't want Palin either. The country can do better than either of you.
Huh? Wha? Uh... | 1:31 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
McCain: "Obama has little to no experience and is not ready".

McCain picks VP who has little to no experience. Even less experience than Obama.

Explain this please.
Poor Mitt! | 1:31 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
It's time for Mitt to quietly become a Deer Valley recluse and go back to work as a consultant who rescues wealthy companies from bankruptcy. Maybe he'll flip-flip again and join the democrats in four years.

If McCain were to get elected and he was somehow unable to fill the role of president, do you think vice president Palin could step up to the plate and be the president? NO WAY.

Thanks McCain. You've just handed the elections over to the democrats.
Elaine?? Is that you? | 1:31 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I was wondering what Elaine Bennis has been doing since Seinfeld went off the air several years ago.
Briliant! | 1:32 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I was nervous about Pawlenty, and hoping for Mitt. But this is a brilliant move for the party that has shown the greatest respect for real women and real women's issues.

The Democrats had their chance with Hillary, now it's the Republicans turn to lead yet again.
Phil | 1:33 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Palin was president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which won't allow Mormons to join. Hmmm...
Sarah who? | 1:33 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
What a transparent attempt to pander for the female vote. Does John McCain really think that women will fall for this one? He hasn't honored women, he has disrespected their intelligence.

He is willing to use and discard and demographic for his own purposes: what a slap in the face to Utah and the Mormons by not picking Mitt!
what a joke | 1:37 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
From a mayor of a town the size of Mona to VP and possibly President? A Harriet Myers move only worse. Now he will get blasted in the General Election. Another "senior moment" from a senile old man. GO AWAY MCCAIN
Yuk | 1:41 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Sarah Palin has less experience than what George Bush had back in 2000.
That Rascal! | 1:41 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
That cheeky maverick: once you think you've got him tied up (no pun intended) he goes and pulls a stunt like this!

A completely transparent, desperate stunt--which out does even pandering MItt--but a stunt nonetheless.

But can we expect anything less from the "original maverick"
awesomeron | 1:41 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
No Obama, Keep The Change. I am going down to Ala Moana Mall and have a Tee Shirt made, Most likely Today. I have Goggled Her and the Choice is so far so good. My youngest daughter says it is absolutely brilliant. I think it will shake the trees and what falls out, falls out. Obama is a first term senator and has little more experience the she does, and he wants to be president. She at least has the Experience of being a Mayor before being a Governor. She seems to be a Peoples Choice person as her Party did not support her in her Election Bid for Gov. Appears to be Pro Life, but can walk in both worlds. Being her last Baby was born in April, I don't think her and her husband live separate lives. Things are a little different in Alaska then down here. I am glad I did not make commits about her being dumpy, she just had a child at 44 thats rough, and she did appear in Vogue. At least the Repubs will have experience at the Top of the Ticket not the Bottom of the Ticket like the Dems
re: Sarah who? | 1:47 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
So you mean if he wins then he'll dump her and she won't get to be VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?
HAHA! | 1:51 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I didn't know how McCain could find someone worse than Romney... but he did. This is absolutely hilarious! Meet President Obama and Vice President Biden. woot!
Change, Alaska-style? | 1:51 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Is Sarah really a maverick outsider for Washington DC?

Alaska looks like "DC North," with all the scandals and impropriety going on, some of which Sarah herself is a part of...

I know there are people who want us to do a Hillary Clinton Surrender and give the Election to Obama, and his Pro Partial Birth Abortion cronies. However that is not happening. Now I have a Horse in the Race and I can support McCain and America can be still be saved from the Obamanation. The Woman just had a baby and her oldest son in in the United States Army. I feel much better then yesterday and we now have a fight. Win or Lose we now at least have a fighting chance. No Obama Keep The Change. Small Change, Chump Change, very little change.
Biff | 1:55 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Please read about "troopergate" and tell me this isn't bringing "Springer" to the White House. This woman is tough-no doubt. She's stood up for herself and for her office, but come on! This is taking the concept of electing someone you'd want to have a beer with to an absurd extreme! It's like picking out a random bar patron and VERY potentially having them run the most powerful position on earth! Man we are really scraping the bottom of the barrel these days!
Should have picked Hillary | 1:56 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Sounds like the liberals are running scarred!!!!!!
Ronald A. Young | 1:56 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Despite what you may think, very little of what goes on has anything to do with Utah. Like Hawaii, at the end of the day it does not really matter what we think or do. Obama is not even coming to Utah and is not going to meet with President Monson, we might be in for a rough 4 or heaven forbid 8 years. I am looking for a move to change Term Limits at least for President, starting on day one.

The only reason I know anything about this Women is because Glenn Beck has mentioned her, several times. What I am mostly interested in is her stand on Abortion, if she is Pro Life, then I finally have someone I can support in this race. I can't vote for McCain but if she is alright then I will be able to.

Mitt as much as I like him has to much Baggage. He is either Mormon and some won't vote for him, and for some Mormons he is not Mormon enough. He is a great administrator.

Not that my Vote for President Counts anyhow because Hawaii is going for the Obamanation at any cost.
Sarah | 1:57 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Like most people on this site, I don't know much about Palin. But I do like what I've heard, and I'm eager for the chance to learn more. I'm a moderate independent, and I don't believe in voting for parties, but candidates. So I'm looking forward to watching the debates, and I don't think that anybody should be dismissing any candidate yet, before we've seen them in action. But I already like Palin better than Biden. Her record shows that while she's new, she's grounded, and her ideals are much more in line with mine than Biden's are, that's for sure.
Mitt's much better with McCain | 2:00 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I hate this broad. Sarah Palin is a Moderate Populist Conservative. Yes I see they are really gonna help out the middle class here?. She's just another AlGore tree hugger. Palin said the state will file a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Washington challenging U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthornes decision to grant Endangered Species Act protections to the polar bear. The Republican governor has argued that the ice-dependent polar bear, the first mammal granted Endangered Species Act listing because of global warming, does not need additional protections. The Bush administration's listing was an act of submission in the face of lawsuits from environmental activist groups. As usual with acts of submission, this one didnt satisfy the demanders. Theyve gone back to court to sue because the listing doesnt include steps against global warming. Stop the planet - this Republican wants to get off - I am tired of not getten any help, beit from the VA, or elsewhere, when I am disabled and elderly and low end of the middle class, they would rather help out a polar bear than a human being, and I am fedup with that line of thinking. Obamacon is no different here either.

A struggling Republican candidate picks a person for his running mate that less than two years ago was the mayor of a town with a population of 7000, and is now 19 months into her term as governor of a state with a population of 670,000.

I was already on a high last night from hearing Obama's fantastic speech. Reading this news this morning is icing on the cake.

I can't wait to see someone in a debate ask Biden and Palin the difference between Sunni and Shia.

Palin: The Female Quayle!
He punted | 2:01 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I imagine there are probably 3 million women in the USA that have as much experience as Palin. Why not just have a lottery? When Bush selected his own attorney to be a Supreme Court justice it was shot down in three days. McCain won't have that opportunity to replace his blunder unless she is found out to be on drugs. Is he?
GOPloss | 2:01 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
So sad... Guess it is true... McCain really is insane!
Hey Libs... | 2:02 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
NObama lost the election this morning!!! McCain and NObama were tied before the VP picks. Biden brought NObama down (gallup poll was 46%-44% for McCain earlier this week), and Palin is going to LAUNCH McCain!!! NObama would have lost anyway (Americans are not interested in voting for liberals), but the margin of victory just shot up!!! MANDATE BABY!!! Just thought you'd like to know.
Naval Gazing on the Left | 2:02 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I can't stop laughing. The left are now complaining about the Republicans selecting a woman. Oh thou hypocrites! Maybe the Demos don't like her because her husband is part native? Maybe it's because she is willing to stand for what's right regardless of partisan politics? Or maybe they're just upset she is not their kind of woman. She doesn't seem to fit their cookie cutter ideal of a good leftist, no-fault-morality, pro-abortion, socialist, kids in Tai Chi instead of hockey, kind of woman.

Happy Birthday, John McCain | 2:06 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Lost on all this Alaska hype is John's 72nd Birthday!

I guess we don't need to worry about him answering the phone in the middle of the night...he'll already be up using the bathroom.
One good discision in life :-) | 2:06 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
McCain was right, not picking Mitt. This is great news. No matter the outcome, Mitt is out of the running. Utahan will be force by McCain's pick to vote for something other than religion.
Former Mitt supporters... | 2:07 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
If you're not voting for McCain/Palin, you are stupid and you don't really care about family values, you just cared about a Mormon getting elected. If you choose to go down that route, do yourselves a favor and don't tell anyone.
re re Sarah Who? | 2:10 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Come on. You can read better than that:

McCain discards "demographics."

Is Sarah a "demographic"? No she's an "individual."

Watch for the interests of the female demographic to be abandoned if he is elected.
