Wow....one of two major party presidential contenders announces his running mate, and what does the Deseret News think is the leading, most important part of the story? Who it's NOT?? An entire paragraph on the non-choice of Romney, before a single word about Palin. Yes, we know who owns the Deseret News, and what's really important to them. Sorry, Tommy & Co., you just lost the last vestiges of your 2008 bid to direct the White House.
Hooray! | 10:58 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I am delighted that McCain chose Sarah Palin! Sure, I like Mitt, but *I* think Palin is even better. I know I am more energized about the election now that we have such a great pairing. Congrats to Sarah, to McCain and on to victory in November.
:-) The world isn't Utah | 10:58 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
This is wonderful! Utah Mormons and the GOP: always a bride's maid and never the bride. :-) Why should you waste good oil on a wheel that never squeaks?

Mitt like Utah Mormons have no other viable options. You must stay with the GOP even if you get no respect in return.

You aren't doing too well with gay marriage in California. Fifty-four percent are against prop 8. Maybe politics isn't you real calling.

Vote for Bob Barr. If you don't like McCain, but can't stand the thought of voting for Obama, help build up a third party. Vote for Bob Barr, or even Ralph Nader.
Experience | 11:04 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
From where I sit, it doesn't look like any of the candidates has experience as the President or Vice President. And if memory serves me correct, I don't think Abraham Lincoln had any experience as President either. As a matter of fact, when I got my current job, I didn't have any experience doing that job either.

But guess what, I think I do a pretty good job, despite my inexperience. I was hired on my "potential". That is what we are doing here - looking to hire someone on potential, not experience.

I guarantee you that if you ask any former President, they would tell you that nothing can prepare you for the job. And the right person 40 yrs ago may not posses the necessary traits to do the job today.

In my business, I would hire an Idaho potato farmer over someone with experience any day - because of their character, integrity and work ethic.

I don't see how Ms. Palin's inexperience is any more relevant than anyone else. If you are looking for a change from politics as we know it, she seems like the best bet.

Oh man | 11:05 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
A woman like this one heart beat away from the presidency scares me to death.
Robo | 11:05 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
It seems that no matter who is in office, the predominant will of the people generally gets done, a little faster sometimes or a little slower sometimes, but generally so. The representative republic form of government seems to actually work. If the country is in a shambles as some of you seem to think, it is because of the predominant character of its 350 million people which influences the predominant will and the resultant governmental policies. The president doesn't control how each citizen lives his life, nor their value systems, that's up to each of us. Please everyone go out on election day and vote your conscience and let the chips fall where they may, but continue to live as good of a life as we each can.
Ghost | 11:08 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I cant believe all you people. First of all, McCain didnt pick Romney because he is Mormon. That is a non-issue. McCain didnt pick Romney because of his money and the fact that he is a white male.

When Obama chose Biden as a running mate, it left the door open for McCain to choose a non-traditional VP.

Palin is a good choice. First, she wont alienate the base. The first thing to consider when choosing a running mate is first, do no harm. Palin will looks good to women and young people, a demographic that the Republicans have had a hard time winning in the past. She is also a fresh face in politics, not the same old tired old men. McCain needs to look more progressive than previous Republican candidates and this choice helps in that.

The unknown is how she will do in debates. If she is good, this is a great choice. If she isnt, it might be a bad choice.

As far as experience, she at least has run a state. Obama hasnt run anything except a campaign.
Glen | 11:08 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Yeah! Go McCain. This woman may be nobody but so was Obama and she is as Obama is handsome.I think this really adds spice to the election as well as representing women.
Re: Oh Please | 11:09 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Your posting was sexist and shallow on so many levels. Are you in the dark ages? If you can't see it, then I'm not even going to waste time to explain it, but the important question is, who cares if your secretary is prettier? Is that the best you can come up with? You sound as shallow as those people who joke about McCain's age or the fact that Romney is LDS or about Obama's race/ethnicity.

I'll never understand why people vote based on looks.

And I'll never understand why anti-Mormons waste so much of their time bad-mouthing people on here this news site. If you can't stand Mormons so much, then why are you living in Utah and reading the Deseret News? Go somewhere else! Seriously, it gets so old. It's like the same 10 people have nothing better to do than wait for articles like this to come out just so they can make a few jabs. You could be doing a lot more with your life.
Demublican in CA | 11:09 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
You guys are crazy...this is the ONLY choice McCain could make. Forget her experience...it's probably equal to Obama. A gun totin, hockey playin, special interest hatin, high moral, high value, blue collar chick! HAND HER THE COUNTRY PLEASE! This man has had enough of the good ole boy's in Washington. This is the most brilliant move I've seen in my 50 years of hoping politics would come to the PEOPLE! I'm clear on my choice now for sure!
GOP-REP | 11:09 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I have to say I'm a little disappointed with the choice. With all off the GREAT people out there who could be VP, McCain went with a no-name, little experence choice.

This once again leads me to believe the Mitt was turned down because of his religion. He's a great leader, executive, and human being. Why McCain turned him down is simple. The NATIONAL GOP goes not like Mormons. The Conservative/religious right does not like Mormons.

I'm feeling very alone today in my faith.
VP debates | 11:10 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Hey all you know it alls... Lets see what Palin can do in the VP debates. Everyone is clamoring for change... She can offer that. I'm impressed w/her so far. Don't cast judgement in the first 5 minutes! Give her a chance!
james | 11:11 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Well, well McCain selected a non-Mitt. You know why, one reason, the Republican party could not deal with a Mormon. When will Utah wake up to the fact that while they might be loyal red, red is not loyal to them. The Republicans use Utah but when push comes to shove, they are uncomfortable and embarassed by Utah!!!!
Wainwright Peregrine | 11:13 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
To be candid, I thought Romney had no chance to be picked as VP as the block of southern baptist would oppose it. In their minds, an LDS who might become president was tantamount to blasephemy.

It is not my opinion, but definately theirs. Only by winning enough votes in the the primary would Romney have gotten the nomination. That failed. The LDS organization and support and money is wanted, but not head of the party by the southern baptists.
Change | 11:13 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Wouldn't it be nice to see this country once again being run by Americans, rather than politicians? I don't know about you, but I have a hard time relating to any of them. I think they are all pompous, self-serving and out of touch. Maybe Palin isn't such a bad choice.
Palin | 11:14 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
The more I learn about her the more I like her. I'll give her a chance.
Wondering | 11:14 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
What about Palin's current mini-scandal where she fired the head of the Alaska State Police because he refused to fire her sister's estranged husband who was an Alaska state trooper while her sister was undergoing a bitter divorce? She has been (is being)investigated for abuse of power. Has that been resolved in her favor?
Rat Trapper | 11:16 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Mr. Rat...You need to go scrounge up some crumbs (oh sorry...you already ARE a democrat). You're scared to death and you know it. You're gonna see the cheese (obama) on the trap...KNOW that it's a trap...but still go after the cheese? Higher taxes, less security, more entitlements, broken welfare...all will eventually take your head off.
ich dien | 11:21 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
John McCain must have read Rick Bennett of Sandy City, book Destroying Angel. One reviewer on AMAZON'S book site wrote about Bennett's perception of the treasure that women could be.

AN AMAZING LOOK AT WOMEN's SUPPRESSED POTENTIAL., October 15, 2000
"By A Customer
I couldn't put this book down. As a life-long New York Democrat, I thought I was leading-edge sensitive to women's issues. But couched in one of the most exciting pieces of technology fiction I've ever read is a disturbing spiritual gem: Women could well be the intended solution to all the worlds problems.

Not all women, of course. We can hope for the best. And maybe Rick can finish his sequenl.
April 1st????? | 11:21 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Is this a joke and later today they are going to say April 1st? The race is now over and Obama will be our next President.....God, please come and save us!!!!!!

Highly Skilled Leaders | 11:27 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Haven't our "Highly Skilled Leaders" in Washington got us into the messes we our in now?

Let's be realistic here too. Both parties have caused some huge problems that need fixing. We're all in this together so quit the finger pointing. Last time I checked the democrats gave us some pretty nasty problems too.
Duh | 11:33 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I didn't want Romney because of all his negative campaiging, he is so cutthroat but I think for the first time since I have been a voter, we are all going to lose so bad as a country. If I have to make a choice, there is no way I am going to vote in an individual who has absolutely no experience in anything politically. Two years as a governor? Wow, McCain really screwed us all. Oh well, out with the old (literally) and in with the new. Biden is a much better pick, too bad he wasn't republican.
Someone with Class | 11:34 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
To Maggie at 9:36,

What a wonderful sentiment to express in the heat of the battle. I'm sure hundreds more will weigh in today with their thoughts. No matter what they write you win the prize for the most thoughtful and generous comment of the day.

ScottAZ | 11:37 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
What an awesome pick for VP. Palin has 2 years as an executive leader.....that's 2 years more than either Obama or Biden. An 80 percent approval rating in Alaska because of her maverick style....not in the pockets of anyone. A Washington outsider bringing change to Washington. She is the perfect pick for VP.
On Experience... | 11:37 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Hey everybody.... McCain STILL has experience. He didn't somehow lose his experience when he chose a lesser experienced running mate. McCain also has ACTUAL accomplishments in government. He has also reached accross the aisle. This is already way more than Obama who has never reached accross party lines and thus never achieved anything notable in government.

PS - It's absolute hipocrisy for liberals to sing the anthem of change so loudly and then turn to criticize McCain for attempting to "change" things up with a female running mate. Weren't liberals supposed to be known for their non-racist/non-sexist viewpoints? I guess actions speak louder than words....

Vote McCain/Palin 2008!!
Realist | 11:42 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
You might as well stick a fork in McCain because he is done! Not a wise choice for a number of reasons. He's getting some bad advice from his people and is showing he is not smart enough to disregard it.

Where is Colin Powell when we need him?
I'm a Romney Fan.... | 11:43 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
...who is not disappointed in McCain's pick of Palin. This woman is intelligent, articulate and she stands for family values.

Sarah Palin is a brilliant pick for many reasons.

Taxing, spending and growing the government machine is not the solution to our country's problems.

Go McCain / Palin
Anonymous | 11:43 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
He picked a woman who's *under and ethics investigation* instead of Romney!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!
LOL | 11:46 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
It makes you wonder if Rove would have got as far in the GOP if he was Mormon and not a agnostic? Mormons to the GPO is like the gay who cleans the stable never gets to ride the horse. Keep no shoveling, there must be a pony in there somewhere!
Where's Texas? | 11:50 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
The rumor mill was speculating on Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson. McCain was clearly looking for a woman. He might have picked up Texas with Kay Bailey, but Palin? McCain will still win electoral votes in Utah and Alaska. He'll probably lose in the other 48 states. He deserves it, since he's so arrogant.
Palin? | 11:52 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
This selection is nothing more than BIG BUSINESS trying to get their way some MORE with their running of this country. They are scared to death that their record profits at the expense of our majority population will end with the election of Obama-Biden. This would ensure in their opinions that they would be able to conduct business as usual. Guess what BOYS--your party is over. We need regulation back in business, unions back for the displaced and job fringes taken away by the filthy rich. Retirements, insurance, and pay to name just a few. They need to be taught once again that these huge businesses and all other business are no better than the employees they have. These CEO's and their benefit packages need to have a new awakeing again. The hard, dedicated working employees need to be regonized for what they contribute to the bottom line of these mega corporations not the corporate leaders. After all no business is any better than the employees that work for them. This is still a TEAM thing.
Rookie = Apprentice | 11:54 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Rookies should be vice president, not president.

On the McCain ticket, we have an experienced statesman for president and an up-and-coming politician for vice president. As VP, Sarah Palin will get to advise John McCain and be an apprentice while having little real power to make mistakes.

On the Obama ticket, we have the exact opposite. Obama is very eloquent but doesn't have enough experience. Biden has more experience, but he would not be the one with the power to goof things up.

If you're on a bus whose brakes have failed, who do you want driving? A 30-year veteran professional driver? Or an intern who has done lots of research and public speaking on bus driving? I'll take the veteran.
Caleby | 11:55 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Foreign policy experience--Obama/Palin tied.
Economic experience Obama/Palin tied.
True Washington outsider--Palin in a landslide.
True history of reform--Palin in a landslike.
Able to relate to the common person--Palin in a landslide.
Palin and Obama have very similar resumes and Dems complain that she would be a "heartbeat" from the presidency. Problem is that with Obama as the lead dog, he would be the president. I've always said that nothing could get me to vote for McCain. Well, I just may have to change my mind.
re John Pack Lambert | 11:55 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
She's quite a character--come to find out she smoked pot--and inhaled--when it was legal in Alaska. She's also very Gay Friendly. What is this world coming to? Not your typical Republican, eh?
"Maverickness," a liability?? | 11:58 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I have tried to at least tolerate John McCain's "maverickness" but I think he has carried his "maverickness" to an extreme and it has now become a liability. If he thinks the number of women he will attract will more than compensate for the numbers of other groups he will lose, he is mistaken. Who the h_ _ _ is Sarah Palin??? I will try to adopt a wait and see attitude but I really think he has lost me, a lifelong woman Republican.
Disappointed | 12:01 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I am very disgusted with McCain. He just used Romney & led everyone to believe Romney would be his VP.I hope Romney will be finished with him.I certainly am.
That decides it for me | 12:02 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
With Palin on the ticket I can feel comfortable voting for McCain this fall. Previously I felt Chuck Baldwin was my only option. People are going to be very surprised with Gov Palin's savvy and ability to communicate the issues articulately. I think Biden is in for a bumpy ride during the Veep debates. Wait and see...
Oh the Pain | 12:06 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008

Go Obama

Three ceilings in this historical presidential race. African American. Woman. Mormon.

Mormon seems to have the least # of cracks in it. It will be interesting to see if Hillary's 18 million cracks will help in this race or not.
Pennsylvania | 12:16 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
McCain just won Pennyslvania and Ohio with this pick. A very good choice and a winning ticket!!!
Anonymous | 12:17 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Her resume is only thin if you don't bother to read up on her. Obama has one term as senator with most of that spent running for office of President. She is miles ahead of him in that regard. While many want to comment on her beauty queen status, they fail to comment that she was mayor, commissioner for the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (AOGCC)and governor. Oddly enough, she picked up the endorsement of the Teamsters Union Local 959. Yup, she's a reformer and a good choice even if cursed with beauty...how dare she!
you all need to grow up! | 12:22 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
All i see is bitterness and ones that want to laugh at others disapointment. Why dont you all look at the issues and the agenda of all the candidates. look at what they have said. and what they want to do to America. try to actually look at the best intrest of others and not your self all of the time. I know it will be tough, but if you think of this country first, and the people who live here, instead of your hate. This country will become even better!
Jeff | 12:27 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Sarah is a great pick and will galvanize the Republican base, oh and for all you Mormon haters, Mitt Romney is on the Republican scene to stay. He has cemented himself a permanent position in the Republican Party and his name recognition and popularity in the party will only grow. The evangelical stranglehold on the Republican Party is ever weakening and religious intolerance will be the next and final barrier to be brought down. The real loosers today are the Democrat Party and bitter Huckabee (Huckawho?)who wasn't even vetted.
That R doesn't Mean Righteous | 12:29 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Dear Utahns

Your families don't make enough money for the Republicans to be any actual help to you. Your children, their children, and their children's children will be paying off the dept of the last seven years of borrow-and-spend economics.

Try a democrat for a change. The last one left the Whitehouse with a surplus in the budget.

McCain/Palin: Desperate times call for desperate measures!
Now a McCain supporter | 12:36 p.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Are you kidding me people! You all complain about politicians not doing what we the people want. McCain picks somebody with a proven record of fighting corruption in BOTH parties and you all whine. You people are the very reason that nothing ever changes in politics because you support the "same old, same old" by re-electing them. Just because someone doesn't have that much experience, doesn't mean they're not qualified. An excellent pick McCain, I will now vote for you.
