Utah man calls his survival a miracle

I understand... | 12:24 p.m. Aug. 28, 2008
I understand the first comment. I don't have a problem with it. A "miracle" is something you have to choose to believe in, or not. Those who died probably prayed also, yet they died. There are probably people who never prayed who survive these types of things. I honestly cannot say one way or another WHY some things happen, it is left open to conjecture. I do think it may upset family members of those who did die to say that your loved one survived because he "prayed", because this implies that their loved ones were not as good. I hear this kind of thinking in church alot. I remember in SS a few months back the comment was made that "when we do well financially it is because we are being blessed for being righteous". Ascribing anything to God is a tricky thing. I know lots of wicked rich people and lots of good poor people. I know lots of good dead people who died in accidents or from illness and lots of bad living people who beat a serious illness. God does his thing, but we are not the ones to say why he does what he does.

who survive those who died trying to help others, and to speedy recover of the noted individual in the article; count your blessings...

I think somehow in the great hereafter we'll all be exposed to the hand of God in all the incidents and circumstances/coincidences of our lives. A miracle befalls one, a tragedy to another - for now only; it will all be well in eternities, and for the ultimate good and expereince of all involved... doesn't make it easier to understand now though sometimes...

I don't want to speak for Dan, but knowing him as I do, I know that he would be broken-hearted if anything he said about this terrible accident caused pain to anyone, especially those who are mourning loved ones. Please imagine how you would feel in his situation, and let us all be happy for him and grieve with those who are suffering, as he is. He is as fine a man as you will meet.

Psalm 90:12 applies here: "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."

Cherish, Dan, your new lease on life and make the most of your remaining days. You just never know when you're gonna go. And remember, you've got to live for those who did not. Fate gave you a sacred responsibility. I hope you remember that!

Incredible story -- but I thought it was going to be about a Utah football fan getting off the BYU campus.

Guys -

Miracle or no miracle, this is not the time or the place to act like you have chosen to on this board.

To "only" debate whether this man surviving was a miracle or not detracts from the fact that this man is alive and he and his family and friends are gratfeul, whereas there is surely sorrow from the family and friends of those who passed away.

Please, even if you don't agree with the prevailing attitudes of spirituality and worship in Utah, don't pick a fight when none is warranted or wanted.

Thanks.

You really think God cares about poverty? I would rather be in poverty surrounded by friends and family with a meager job that I enjoyed than alone, rich and in a job I hated.

It takes a really naive person to think that money=happiness. You will find more poor religious people than rich religious people. Explain that!

Miracles are in the eyes of the beholder. If you think that evolution created you to burn through 75 years of existence just for kicks and giggles, than enjoy that concept; leave the rest of us to believe that we are more important than that.

It truly saddens me what you have all chosen to comment on. I lost 4 great friends and co-workers in the event. It has been a horrible week and it seams that very few of you even understand the pain or reason of what happened. The comments that have been posted made me feel worse then I already do.

It's sad that you all have lost sight of what these great ppl were going to do. If you knew any of them you would be very ashamed of yourselves by what you are saying. We are saddened by the passing of our dear friends. They were all amazing individuals. We are so blessed to still have Dan with us. It gives us all a sense of hope. He is a great man, husband to his wife and father to his children. We love you Dan!

did the lady who started praying out loud survive?
JT | 1:08 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
First of all, to Jamisen -- yes, the lady who prayed aloud, from my understanding, is one of the survivors.

Dan's in-laws are dear friends of mine and I am so grateful that he was miraculously saved. It is a miracle -- as it can't be explained how he survived. From my understanding, all those immediately around him were killed and the other survivors were further up in the plane. I believe it to be a miracle that the other survivors also survived, considering their presence in the explosion.

My heart goes out to all those affected by this tragic event, and hope and pray that those who read this can find it in their hearts as well to show respect and sympathy for those involved rather than debating on trivial things.

These were generous people doing what I wish I had the time/ambition to do. It is sad do read this stream of comments and see their sacrifice get trivialized by a pathetic definition of what is and is not a miracle.

Let us all celebrate the lives of these wonderful people. They set a standard for us all to live up to. I am humbled to hear of their charity and love of mankind. It gives me hope in our humanity. If each of us would make the time to contribute to others, we too could find the joy that only heartfelt service can bring. They lived, loved and made a difference. May we follow thier examples.

I honor them and thier families. My heart felt thanks and gratitude for them all.

Dan, Can u please tell us if Jeff and Lydia were at peace when they passed and how they passed? Was it from burning or something other then that? Did they have much time from the time they knew the plane was going down? I'm very sorry if it's hard to talk about it but they were both my close friends and I can not stop wondering, I miss them both terribly.
