I can't believe I am siding with the ACLU on this, but I am. . . WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!!

How DARE the AG's office through this video up and have it followed by a police officer say, ""It's crazy that we have guys like this that would do this type of thing," said Richfield police officer Spencer Redden in the video clip." This is out and out non-judicial personnel saying THIS MAN IS GUILTY. I thought for sure from the beginning that the man had been found guilty and sentenced. BUT NO, HE HASN'T!!! How can they do this??? This guys lawyer should have a field day on this one. He's going to say that NO UNBIASED JURY can be found IN THE ENTIRE STATE!!!

Way to shoot us all in the foot Mr. Shurtleff.
Convenient timing | 5:18 p.m. Aug. 27, 2008
What convenient timing for Shurtleff, who is up for re-election, to unveil a new website, no doubt paid for with taxpayer money.

I'm with the ACLU, although my main complaint is that posting the video is so voyeuristic and childish.

The only people I assume are guilty until proven innocent all happen to be ACLU members.

Go figure...

Like the ACLU members that monitored the Minutemen on the Arizona/Mexico border.
The ACLU members were witting there smoking dope and complaining about the ilegal aliens rights being broken.

what is broken is the ALCU...

You should not care about anything the ACLU either thinks or does.
Wasted tax dollars | 6:59 p.m. Aug. 27, 2008
My son is a correctional Officer for the State of Arizona and Arizona State offers extra protection for all inmates that are featured in the news or media to protect them from attacks in the prison.

Utah doesn't protect high profile inmates with more security to ensure their safety and NOW the AG's office is making more inmates at risk to attack from the prison population, which in turn gives those inmates grounds for civil law suits, especially as the source of information came from Utah tax dollars!

Mark Shurtleff is probably one of the most gifted AGs that Utah has seen in some time. He is tough on crime and continues to move forward, fighting crime, without blinking an eye. And when clowns come forward ("Convenient Timing) and say things like; he did the website because it is re-election time. Get real, this is Shurtleff's style no matter what year it is. Obviously, comments like this are coming from, let me guess, maybe a political foe looking for a free forum to vent against the AG. Mark, keep up the good work that you do, and thrust me you'll get re-elected for your strong stance against criminals.

Check out the FLDS immunity section.

If the ACLU is against it, it can't be all wrong, however some de-identification would be in order. Let's not start a lynching. Do the AG's opponents want him to hide until after the election so they can accuse him of being a do-nothing? Who is the dumb one?

It could ruin the court proceedings to post the video.
I like it... | 8:44 p.m. Aug. 27, 2008
I really like that the AG is attempting to get more in touch with people, show what his office does, as well as create a streamline method of getting the info out to the public. Bravo! As for the video, he can simply fix that issue by putting a disclaimer at the beginning or end of the film. That's how most do it! :)

AG Shurtleff is a dedicated and serious crime-fighter, not a publicity hound like so many politicians. He is doing this because he thinks it will help fight crime.

Screw the ACLU, even if they may be partially right about not using the video until the perp is actually convicted.

Shurtleff for Governor!
What about a biased jury | 10:24 p.m. Aug. 27, 2008
How do you get an impartial jury for a trial when all the criminals have their arrest posted on the AG's web site?

That should give them plenty of grounds for a mis-trial in their appeals!

Thanks Mark. This is what we need. Anyone who has had a family member hurt by one of these rotten men will support you in bringing these guys down. And anyone who has had a family member get caught as a predator understands why this needs to be done. These guys will not stop this stupid behavior unless their faces are plastered on tv or newspapers. They think they are above the law. I give my vote to Mark.
Conejo | 12:21 a.m. Aug. 28, 2008
So.... to everyone who thinks this person can't get a fair trial. Do you believe everyone considers a video of an arrest as presenting all facts in a case? If it is, I have a great video of some swamp land in Florida whic just came available! Give yourself and fellow human beings some credit on the discernment front. People understand these videos are not the entire story.

How embarrassing to us citizens of Utah that we have a wild west lynching attorney general. To me, his actions are as vile as anyones who commits a crime. He has significantly erroded our rights to a fair trial and to be considered innoncent until PROVEN guilty. Way to go Utah!

Mark Shurtleff putting on a show for re-election? You bet! He won't have my vote!

As one who actually worked on the new website from start to finish, can I say that the site has been under construction for a LONG time. Way before Mark was even considering running for reelection.
Some of the incredible things this site will allow media and the public to do now:
Get MORE information quicker about important Utah issues!
Help bring abducted children home quicker!
Teach parents and children how to be safe online (both from ID theft and from internet predators)!
Access public records and documents!

People cry to have an open government and we do everything we can to protect the public and its interests. This is the best way we can conduct the public's business in public!

Why isn't Shurtleff taking videos of payday lenders ripping off senior ciizens and the destitute? Oh, that's right. He gets a nice campaign contribtion envelope from them every few months.

You say "Way before Mark was even considering running for reelection."

That's cutely naive. Mark obviously decided (whether or not he announced) to run for re-election the moment Huntsman was elected in 2004 - realizing he would not have a shot at the mansion until at least 2012. Heaven forbid Mark should ever accomplish that goal - the mansion would be for sale to the highest bidder (or contributor).

The ACLU (America's lethal enemy within), is at it again ! They are one of America's worst enemies.
They work to destroy America under the guise of someone defending the Constitution !
Their backers are some of the most far left vermine
in the world. Beware.
Crime Watch Inc | 12:33 p.m. Aug. 28, 2008
We at Crime Watch Inc believe in American and American's right. The last time We looked the Constituation is still in place and we still live in a democratic society. Mr. Shurtleff has a right if not a duty to post a sex offender's arrest so that all can see! Hey, clowns (people against the constituion) wake up, maybe, just maybe, by posting these arrests then (think about it now) maybe these sex predators will hesitate before they move on one of our children. I think all arrest of these low lifes need to be vido taped and put on the website. Keep up the good work Shurtleff (and Chief Wallentine) we back you 100 percent at Crime Watch Inc (membership 347 and climbing).
Johny Fairplay | 12:35 p.m. Aug. 28, 2008
This piece of far left vermin finds Shurtleff accusing others of political grandstanding a little rich.
Terry Gunn | 10:16 p.m. Aug. 28, 2008
if the perp was caught with his hand out waiting for a teenage girl he is caught so why not just put him jail convect him right then throw a way the key do not let him out make him pay for what he did it. end of story
