Hmmm... | 3:57 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I know I'M going to vote for someone based on how many homes they do or don't have.

Based on Obama's lack of experience and McCain's age, I would say the vice president nominees will be a bigger factor in this year's elections than ever before.
DCGamer | 3:58 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Some of you are concerned about the number of homes Romney owns. I have some questions of my own for Obama.

1. How many convicted felons are in his close circle of friends?

2. How many former, unrepentant terrorist bomb-throwers is he friends with?

3. How many racist pastors does he look to for spiritual guidance?

The Dems really know how to pick their candidates...Obama is an empty suit with zero real accomplishments. He gave one good speech, and the leftists nominated him for president. Go figure...
Sour Left-Wing Grapes | 3:58 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I greatly enjoy the inane responses from The Left, resorting to name-calling because the facts don't support them.

So, you have a problem with Mitt Romney working hard, creating a lot of jobs, being successful, and earning his wealth. But you respect people who inherit proceeds from illegal bootlegging (Kennedy), marry wealthy Republican widows (Kerry), are a slumlord (Pelosi), or file ambulence-chasing lawsuits (Edwards)?

That makes you sooooo the Democratic: produce nothing yourself but insist on "your share" of everyone else's hard work. Move out of your parents' basement, and get a job.

I do have one big problem with Romney: he should stop apologizing [to whiners like most of the posters here] for being successful. He should be saying, "Heck yes, I'm rich... I want every American to be rich, too."

I don't mind the fact that you disagree with anyone's politics, but must you be insulting? I expect more intelligence and well thought-out responses from Deseret News' readers. If you dislike someone's politics or their personal morals, please state why rather than name calling. It has no place in serious public conversation.

Mitt is his own man. Your sickening lurch to the left with the likes of the Clintons and others along with your insipid need to bash every thing the Mormons do is real old. Why don't you move to San Fran where you and Pelosi can be best friends...
Obama's brother | 4:02 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
"What is the combined number of homes owned by John McCain and Mitt Romney?"

Here's a better question, what is the combined number of brothers concieved from Obama's polygamist father?
Patrick Gibbs | 4:03 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Mitt Romney a voice of reason and honesty? He is schilling for a man who he has personally decried many times this year, and who attacked him viciously. The fact that Romney is defending McCain is the latest example of Romney's willingness to change his stance on anything as long as it suits his purposes. As an active memeber of the LDS Church, it really upsets me to have such a hypocritical, dishonest and corrupt individual so heavily associated with us. People in Utah only support Romney with such fervor because he is a Mormon, not bothering to find out who he is, what he stands for or why. In other words, he is Brigham Young's worst fear.

McCain has flooded the airwaves with hateful adds, one of which literally accuses Obama of being Satan, and yet Romney has the nerve to take Obama to task for one very mild comment. That is both absurd and obscene.
Who Cares? | 4:06 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Who cares how many homes they own. There seems to be a trend of jealousy amoung Americans these days. Why is everyone trying to pull people down just because they are successful? People who are to lazy to make it themselves seem to feel a need to pull those who work hard down to their level. Well Obama will surely help you do that.
Re : Oh Please | 4:09 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
You sound like typical white trash.I don't see poor people with jobs to offer do you ? I'm sure your kids are in the free lunch line. Oh I forgot thats not fair . If they had a free lunch line someone would know witch kid has the lame Dad.
If I had the money I would own more homes to.Is Obama trying to show that these men are smart with thier money, nice job Obama.Hopefuly they bought the house when market is down so they can make a good profit.
QUESTION:
Witch one of these men will keep our country safe ?
I don't think the one that wants to sit down and have tee with tarriest would my choice.
Rhonda | 4:12 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Call me crazy, but I like the idea of having a President and Vice President that have been successful in their fields. I think that's a good thing. I have one home and I earned it and paided for it myself. I don't begrudge those who have more! Class envy and class warfare is a losing issue in my opinion.
John | 4:14 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
None of these people are exactly paupers. Even your precious Obama is doing ok for himself.
An open letter to Right on Romne | 4:17 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I would rather walk into the dark than place trust in a snake oil salesman. A man to remind you that his children are doing their patriotic duty by working on his campaign while others sons and daughters are being killed or have been killed in the theater of war. Mitt is nothing more than a elitist and a postering fool.
Utah Dem | 4:18 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
As a Latter-day Saint I was offended over the past year when Romney had the opportunity to 'defend' his faith and either denied some of our beliefs or avoided them, not that it matters to him or the rest of the rabid Mormon Republicans, but he lost my respect.
Of course he is a successful businessman, sometimes at the expensive of others, but if the US didn't want him as their president why would they want him as the VP?
I always find it interesting when people say McCain would be a good president because he was a POW and was tortured. Maybe he was a POW because he crashed his five aircraft and was in the bottom 5 of his graduating class at the Naval Academy.
I am not an Obama supporter, both he and McCain scare me as to what they will do to this country.
RCS | 4:22 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
One comment above:

Mitt Romney.
What a totally disgusting human being!
Slimy...

I am always amazed when I see a person judge someone they have obviously never even met. Quick to judge, without any personal experience. I'd say that is pure political bias (at best) and fault-finding (at worst). Romney, on the other hand, began by saying that Obama was undoubtedly a good person. No personal character attack here!
Michael | 4:23 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
What is it with some poeple on the left. They spend all day whining about how difficult it is to achieve the American dream, about how some one is always standing in their way, but when people who have achieved incredible success, without a handout from an over-reaching government, in the areas that they have chosen to pursue they are immediately seen as evil or much have cheated in some way or must have stepped on some one else to get ahead. Maybe if some would spend more time on pursuing personal success and not on being envious of others they might one day find success and wealth beyond what they ever thought possible. And by the way I only own one house but maybe it is the first of many.
Pat | 4:27 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Anonymous - The only reason I don't own 4 or more homes is because of that person that stares at me through the mirror every morning. I would lay odds that person is your problem too. I've thought about putting a gun to his head and shooting him, but I just can't pull the trigger. Maybe you can!
Mark B | 4:29 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
How nice to read that Mitt is looking "tan and thin". Otherwise, you have to ask what the story is here, since it seems to be - blood oath GOP faithful don't like Democratic nominee. And yes, could we briefly leave behind the war/violence metaphors? This isn't REAL war, and it's not sports, either.
re:Anonymous | 2:48 p.m. | 4:30 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Why, are you writing a book?

I personally own three, One here in Utah, another a few blocks from the beach in Newport that I timeshare out on Craig's list, and a mountain cabin that has been in the family for years.

I buddy wants me to be part owner in two condos in Park City.

That would make five, but I am no way wealthy. Everything is all investment property. They all pay for themselves and gives me a little extra spending money.

If's that's all you have against the men, give it up.

I know a guy that owns a whole block in Houston, all low-cost housing... Does that make him a bad person?
Who cares? | 4:32 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Who cares how many homes Romney has? He didn't get money in Politics people, he is a BUSINESSMAN! He has every right to have four homes. He's not a 200 million dollar politician, he's a 200 million dollar businessman. Unlike John Kerry and McCain...Both loaded from our tax money. Interesting....

But still, WHO CARES?!
Hewey | 4:36 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I don't understand the "they're not ordinary guys" argument. John McCain chose to stay in a prison camp and endure torture rather than go home before an ordinary guy who had been there longer. Mitt Romney went to college, worked hard, got a job, excelled at it, got a better job, etc. Would you prefer a president who didn't work hard at his job?

Here are the facts of political life: no one is going to become President without either a personal fortune or the backing of a political machine. Which do you prefer?
Turtle | 4:34 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
To Anonymous: Just what makes Romney a nasty neocon? Mitt is a decent, hard working and totally successful individual who is a wonderful family man and a great example. Are you the same? I wonder from comments like this. What is your problem, are you afraid of him?
Politico | 4:36 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
It would be a blast to see Mitt exposed in all of his political deceit, but it won't happen. The Republican attack dogs went after Obama with his pick so they will not open themselves up to pay backs by picking Mitt and all his bagage with McCain.
Why is it | 4:37 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Annonymous seldom has anything important to say? I will bet Annony does not come up with the answer on the total homes...he is one finger short of coming up the it. Go Mitt!!!!
Emeka | 4:41 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
GO Mitt!!
no moes please | 4:45 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
At least if romney is selected as vice that'll ruin all chances for McCain. Nobody wants a mormon running this country, not even helping to run this country. So in that case, go Romney...
David in New York | 4:46 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
RE: Oh please

"So at least McCain/Romney won't be homeless, with about 16 houses between them. Such ordinary guys..."

Actually... 7+4=11

Hopefully, these aren't the math skills Obama will use to fix our economy.
jr | 4:46 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Mitt Romneys type of business has put many Americans out of work for him to make his profits - yep we want him for President as he like Bush steps oops stumps on the little man. All the money in the world and he will still be 6 feet under with the rest of us in the end
Oly Volunteer | 4:48 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Here we go again...accusing Mormons of having little or no sense. Can't get over it can you, the fact that Mormons make great choices, get things done, and in spite of your type, continue to serve the country and the world to make it a better place to live like a lot of other good people do. Saying that Utah does not matter says a lot about what kind of person you are.
Cork | 4:50 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Mitt Romney is Intelligent and straight forward and experienced. He would make a excellent Vice presidental choice.
Envy | 4:55 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I am glad the have lots of homes, & if I were in their place, I would have lots of homes too.
Only envious people despise those who are able to do & are able to have the things most can't ... but if the tables were turned, the feelings of envy would disappear!
Go McCain, pick Mitt & watch the taxes & wealth redistribution disappear.
Henry Drummond | 4:58 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I remember Mitt from when he ran for Senate against Ted Kennedy. He was pro-choice, pro-gay, pro-stem cell research, anti-gun, etc. Now he claims to have never believed in any of those things. It does make you wonder if he really does have political convictions or if he is just slick salesman trying to close a deal.
Ronald A. Young | 4:59 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
If they (McCain and Romney), get Elected and the result is some how the World is not the same as we know it. Heaven forbid, Banned Abortion, Protected Borders, Enough people in Uniform to protect America, Illegal Aliens rounded up and shipped home to include those serving prison sentences for non-violent, non sex related crimes. Then that would be a very good thing. I would hope when standing in the Polls and faced with an Pro Abortion, Pro Partial Birth Abortion person such as Obama. and a Mormon with the same Core Values as they have, then they would choose the Mormon. Its called a moment, and there is a word for the moment that I cannot use here. Lets say a reality moment for the sake of the post. They have a reality moment and they decide to CTR.
the burning question | 5:02 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Would Utahns be carrying on about Romney if he were, let's say, a Baptist?
linda | 5:05 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I would vote for OBAMA for sure.He is the only hope for change. He is a charismatic leader. He can represent young and old at the same time.BIDEN will help him realized the AMERICAN dream for change.Change to be better!
Riggs | 5:08 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Straight talk from a successful business leader who has not been at the public trough all his life. He is right on taxes and his vision of a more limited government role in our lives is essential if we are to survive the mess we have created for ourselves as dependents rather than as supporters of our nation. McCain would certainly get my vote if Romney were added to the ticket. We need at least one of the four persons on the ballot who has not been buried in the DC scene for most of his adult life, i.e. I'm not a great fan of having only senators on both sides of the ballot.
To Home Bashers | 5:09 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Go ahead and keep talking about the amount of homes that the McCains own. It doesn't seem to be working. It is as effective as the McBush comparisions. Obama is still losing ground and today fell behind in the Gallup poll. If Obama wants to bash McCain and Romney for being successful then hey go ahead. He is the one creating division, not McCain or Romney with his class warfare rhetoric. It is not McCain's fault that he relates better to working class citizens than Obama does. Maybe Obama should of thought twice before calling them all bitter and clinging to God, guns and racism.
Rebecca | 5:10 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I think Mitt Romney would be the best thing that could happen to America right now. Go Mitt!
maybelle | 5:13 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I agree with "Who Cares". I would rather have a President who has proven himself financially than one who is struggling. If you have earned your homes, why should it matter if you own 100?

Owning multiple homes shows good investment sense.

Obama earned 4 million last year so he can hardly identify with the average American. I think he made a mistake in trying to make a big deal about McCain's homes.
awesomeron | 5:13 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Neil Abercrombie is the only person I find more disgusting then Berry H. Obama, Strange that he was Obamas, Mothers instructor when his Mother went to UH. I am not at all sure Mitt will be picked but I hope he is. Also why do well off people have to defend their wealth. McCains wife is loaded and does not mind spending her money on her husband so he can serve whats wrong with that. Romney is an excellent business and made what he did not inherit by working for it, and then having it (money) work for him. Thats how the rich get richer. Their money works for them. They are honest people who are family oriented, have good values and served America in one way or another. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe they can apply the same skills that made them wealthy to America.
Dear Olympic Volunteer | 5:26 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
What a bunch of sour grapes. As if you know of everything that went on during the Olympics...

There is clear evidence that Mitt made all the difference in the management of the event. It does not take away from your contribution--or the thousands of others who did so, apparently without looking for a pat on the back.

Please get a grip. You hear of Mitt Romney because he is successful (Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, etc). He knows how to be an executive and manage an organization to success. He is the ONLY one potentially in-the-running who has that level of experience. A Senator is a politician, not an executive.

I stand behind Mitt every chance I get--because I don't believe this country needs more politicians. We need results.

Yeah. Nobama, Nobama, No.
bigmo | 5:28 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Maybe Mitt can let Obama's brother George in Kenya live in one of his houses, since poor George currently lives in a shack on 12 dollars a year. Its easy to see Obama truly means what he asys about the poor, after all, charity begins at home, right?
Texan | 5:28 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Wow! I've always been immpressed with folks like "Olympic Volunteer" who know all things about people they've never met. I first ran into that mentality when I entered college in the 1970s. Liberals then and liberals now haven't changed. And, I suppose, neither have conservatives. But one thing I know for sure that "Olympic" doesn't understand about me is that by insulting me, berating me, or taking any negative approach toward me, hoping that I'll begin to think like him/her, only makes me dig in my heels and resolve to be more the way I am and not change. I was just born that way and don't intend to change -- regardless of what Obama or McCain say.
SpenceOC | 5:28 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
The real fun of politics is watching as a bunch of meaningless idiots try to convince another bunch of meaningless idiots to vote for the first group. The reality is that big government means lots of wasted money taken from the pockets of hard working citizens in the form of taxes. People who become emotionally tangled up in elections are just the lowest form if knucklehead! :-)
Elkman | 5:32 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
The one really bad thing about Romney being chosen is that then all of the sheep in Utah will vote straight Republican. This could hurt the efforts to get rid of our GOP Legislators who have been bought with Special Interest moines. I hope that Old Man MCain will choose Huckabee so that the people here in Zion will see how bad the national GOP leadership hates Mormons. Romney is a great choice for the ticket but he would damage the efforts here locally to clean up our mess with the local GOP. All of our Legislative Leadership needs to get the boot in November. Vote for Obama and every Democrat running in Utah. Let's fix our local mess once and for all!!!
Anonymous | 5:34 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Dear olympic volunteer - did you volunteer because it was a worthwhile thing to do or because you expected some form of recognition. Unfortunately it sounds like you didn't get what you expected. Sounds also like you're pretty unhappy with the fact that there are so many LDS people in Utah - many of whom also volunteered and contributed to the great success of the Olympics. Appears you've dismissed Mitt out of hand simply because of his religion. Wise up - Mitt's accomplishments speak for themselves and LDS people (for the most part) are as honorable as any other sizeable religion in this nation! Relax, LDS people aren't looking to eat your children. Furthermore, Mitt's private sector experience is EXACTLY what is needed to correct course in Washington.
go Mitt | 5:39 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Yay, for Mitt. The only one worth voting for. The only one moral enough and honest enough for the job.
Obama doesn't care are darn for anyone in America;
He thinks he's a movie star. 20 years at a church that is nothing but anti.america
I'm tired of the democrats giving our country away to all the illegals.Voting against this being and
english speaking country. voting against oil drilling, Obama still insists on using foreign oil, giving social security to illegals, health, schooling etc when americans can't even get it. Polosi needs to be run out of the country. these are all things we need to start worrying about!
Romeny the real deal. | 5:40 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Romney is the man! Great line, "I own 4 houses, one less than John Kerry"! I love it!

Love to see all the name callling by these posters. Its a sure sign they have nothing!

Donald | 5:44 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Of course left wing Democrats never mentioned John Kerry's extravagant homes and great wealth but accuse McCain of being out of touch with the common man. Hypocrisy. Romney is pointing this out in plain english.
Romney | 5:45 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Wow! Libs are in full swing here as well!

Mention anything even remotely related to Romney and they come out foaming at the mouth.

Weird.

I became a Romney fan when he gave his "Faith In America" speech last December.

Remember Dems, that was the faith he wrote that discussed America's RELIGIOUS foundation and you liberals en masse started whining that Romney was a bad man because he didn't include athiests and agnostics in his speech.

If that speech didn't excite you, you don't have a patriotic bone in your body.

Romney 2012!

"Truth" Squads??? | 5:47 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Surprise! Surprise! With their talking points in their overly anxious little hands, the Dems are in full attack mode and man are they nasty. They know that the most dangerous lies are those that most resemble the truth. Truth is the first casualty when the Dems, in their rabid zeal to claim the White House for the first time in the last forty years, get their attack machine in full gear. Republicans have been criticized for being in Denver, intruding on the Dem big party. The Dems, by their own admission, plan to have so-called "truth" squads at the Republican big party to answer criticisms from the lectern immediately. So, what else is new?
