If Michelle Obama is so excited about someone like her family being able to work themselves out of the slums of Chicago, why are they so excited to "CHANGE" America.
Prugna | 10:42 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Those who state that Michelle Obama said she was ashamed of her country got those words not directly from Michelle Obama but from the pundits who spun it the most derogatory terms possible for effect. Laura Bush even defended her comment. This has been a pretty dark time in America's history. I don't need to go into the litany of problems we are facing right now. She was stating that for the first time in a very long time, she was proud of her country because she could see that people are waking up, realizing that we need real leadership, and taking action to passionately do something about it. She hasn't seen that in a very long time, and neither have I. I just hope the American people will take the time to get to know her husband, his history of public service, his compassion and empathy for average Americans and their struggles, and his vision for the future. We do need change, and Obama is the catalyst.
Country is tired of them | 10:44 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
RIch,

"
You conservatives really don't have any real values.
When Clinton cheated on his wife you wanted his head, when McCain does, you look the other way."

It's different. I tell you, it's different. McCain is a Republican.

"Does McCain really have the values that you want in our next leader?"

If you consider divorcing your first wife to marry a wealthy heiress so you can launch your political career as the kind of values Republicans want then the answer is yes. They want a guy who doesn't value the family over a guy whose only been married to one woman, has two wonderful daughters and is talking about family values.

"You sit here and trash the Obamas while never talking about the real issues. The reason for that is, you don't know the real issues."

What? You mean there are issues other then Michelle Obama being REALLY PROUD of her country? We should never bring up the fact that McCain finds it tough to be proud of his country while Michelle's REALLY PROUD.

"Obama shows what direction we are headed in, the same old Karl Rove Washington is a thing of past!!"

The country is sick of them!

Yes to the Obamas. I was thinking about Cindy McCain and how she got into drugs, and how she and John met while John was still married, to the wife in the hospital.

Hmmmmmmmm. Yes, to the Obamas.
What??? | 10:50 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Michelle Obama will say, do, and be anything to be the first lady. I looked into her eyes, and I saw her soul...she still hates America.
Guess what people... | 10:55 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
You have to play the political game to get as far as Obama or McCain have. They have both done their share of "pandering" and "flip-flopping". Anyone who accuses one candidate of political maneuvering and not the other is either extremely ignorant or deliberately twisting the facts.
The speech was GREAT! | 11:01 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I thought her speech was wonderful. It was uplifting and edifying, something we rarely get nowadays. Michelle Obama is poised, pretty, and professional. (And IMO being a lawyer and head of a hospital should be considered a plus not a minus.) I'm also impressed with the balance in her life and the importance of her children and extended family.

Some of you are so quick to criticize and refuse to acknowledge how great this family truly is. Why is it so hard to give credit when credit is due?
Is it tough to be proud of U.S.? | 11:01 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Awesome Michelle!!!

"Too bad there are so many sad, angry folks who quickly change the mood."

They can't help it. They have dark, dark souls and have lost the spirit. They don't have any love or any heart. They have become more wicked than those they pretend to condemn. They go after Michelle Obama for saying she's really proud of her country while conveniently ignoring that McCain said he finds it tough to be proud of his country. Which is worst? Saying that for the first time you are really proud of your country (Michelle) or that you still find it tough to be proud of it (McCain)?

"Still, some people seem to think this is THE ONLY thing that matters."

What? You mean there are other issues?

"(Sure glad John McCain never makes any errors when he's speaking, so we can all safely rally around him.)"

You mean that it wasn't a slip of the tongue when he said he finds it TOUGH to be PROUD of his country? I am shocked! I always suspected that John McCain had trouble being proud of his country but thinks for confirming my suspicion and the accuracy of his statement.

Oh Please,
If you're referring to simple name calling, labeling and trashing of people, I agree with you. However, you must differentiate between uncalled for mis-characterizations and an intelligent discussion and exchange of information about the candidates. These are "public" figures and we're talking about the President of the United States, the Commander in Chief, the most powerful person in the world (for now anyway). Whatever information there is that comes out on both candidates, once verified, is free game and should be considered in our decision process. In the world of politics, it's sometimes hard to ascertain what is truth and what is not. However, just because it's "our candidate", let's be carefull not to take things too personal - even the false information.

Awesome Michelle!!! | 9:17 a.m.:

"And can't you folks give it a break with all the lines about how she hates her country. She had one slip of the tongue, months ago, which she later explained."

Michelle Obama's comment was no slip of the tongue. It was her true feeling. In her college years she felt discriminated against. You can get this drift from her thesis writing. Now that she has risen to the ranks of possible First Lady she has outdistanced her detractors and feels vindicated in that America has finally accepted her despite her minority race. So, naturally she feels love for her country and from her country for the first time. Very simple.
I'm confused | 11:07 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008

Apparently, Mr. and Mrs. Nobama have done pretty well for themselves in this terrible country.

If the American dream worked for them, what 'hope' do they offer that isn't already there?

They may be a great family. And they may be laughs to be around, but it's their beliefs that pose a threat to this country.
Critical patriotism | 11:11 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Under the Bush administration, anyone who is critical of the government is labeled "unpatriotic". Certain politicians have promoted this notion that anything less than a rubber stamp on the government's policies is unpatriotic. This is utter rubbish.

I love my country, but I'm very disappointed in the turn it's taken in the last seven years. Like many of us, Michelle Obama has cringed at many of the government's actions. Disagreement with the direction of the nation is not unpatriotic! When the general public starts to attack our right to criticize the country we love, we are heading into dangerous territory. The founding fathers didn't envision a nation of mindless yes-men, but a democratic society that would foster and encourage many different but equally patriotic viewpoints.
Re: Michelle's Speech | 11:14 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Michelle gave a great speech but. . . . . . . . .

The adverse reaction to Michelle's shoot-from-the-hip anti-America comments was so great that the Obama handlers (Axelrod and crew and the liberal media) knew they had to either silence Michelle or re-invent Michelle. They knew it would be impossible to silence her so they opted to re-invent her which they have very effectively done. We are being subjected to a Madison Avenue-type snow job. I think the American people will see the Michelle Obama make-over for what it is--a person convinced against her will who is of the same opinion still. The Dems are so rabid in their zeal to win the White House that they will do ANYTHING to win. Re-inventing Michelle is just one example.

Just reading some of the caustic, hate-filled comments directed towards some obviously very good human beings reinforces my belief that Neocons live in a very dark and dismal place.

Nothing you can say or do will ever appease these miserable souls.

Have compassion for them.

What Michelle Obama really meant was: "For the first time I'm tickled pink to think that America would accept my husband and me for a chance to attain the highest office in the land... considering the fact that the girls at the college I was privileged to attend seemed to shun me for no other reason than the color of my skin."
Goodbye Middle America | 11:31 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
In case you still hadn't reached for your Kleenex, as soon as Michelle had said her God bless to the country and brought those beautiful girls Malia and Sasha up onstage with her, up popped the mister on the big screen, joking about his persistence in dating her, assuring her that she was "incredible" and "also look very cute," both of which were true.

When Obama announced, in that canned presidential way, that he was sitting in Kansas City with the Gerardo family, young Sasha grabbed the mic and said, "Hi, Gerardo family!" And as Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" played, there was the sense that thanks to this careful, but ultimately bravura performance, somewhere out there, great white Middle America just might be a goner.

Lets see...we want him? | 11:33 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Barak either didn't know or practice the appropriate ettiquette when the national anthem is sung and the flag is displayed.

Barak refuses to display the american flag or wear the flag pin that so many of our senators and congressmen where becasue "It stands for something negative" in many parts of the world.

He attended a church for 20 years that preaches racisim over the pulpit on a regular basis...

Michelle says she has never been proud of our country until Barak became a presidential candidate...

Sorry, I can't get past these facts. Someone who is going to lead our country should have at least an ounce of patriotisim. They should love our country. Shey should stand by our values and freedoms that were bought with the blood of our soldiers.

Nothing that a speechwriter has the Obamas' say at this point can change what they have said and done in the past... Sorry. I don't believe them.
CougarKeith | 11:34 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Let's be fair and honest here, Michelle's speech was good. I mean let's be honest before she gave it she has always been ashamed to be an american except for one day in her life. Suddenly last night, She has ALWAYS BEEN PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN? Which is it Mrs. Barack Husein Obama? Make up your mind? You are an attractive woman on the outside, I grant you that, perhaps and probably a good mother and maybe a good lawyer or whatever you do. However to deliver that PREPARED BY SOMEONE ELSE SPEECH to change your image to those who follow politics, and cover up your past blunders and stupors to those who have never seen or heard them, GOOD JOB! Once again, America is between a rock and a hard place, neither major candidate is "THE ONE", especially not annointed and selected by GOD as Nancy Palocy seems to think Obama is. Folks, we are in for a rough 4 years either way, but at least with McCain we will be protected from outsiders and Terrorists.

I feel that we have lost our principles for what we have fight for all these years...and now politicias are stand for and the benefits of POWER & MONEY. and we have seen that for 8 long years.

Thank you for explaining this. It helps me understand why she could make such a comment and why she can NOW feel so proud.

It makes me proud to know that this outcome is actually a real possibility for a poor black girl from the South side of Chicago--truly the American Dream!

"bring healthcare to all . . ." Yes, healthcare in this country is expensive. But if emergency surgery is required, it can get done today. It won't happen that way if medicine is socialized.

I am employed, but uninsured. It's a gamble, but I prefer to be uninsured than have the government insure me for several reasons:

1) Based on its management of other programs, what evidence is there that our government could effectively manage health care?

2) I'm healthy. If medicine is socialized, I'll have to cover the cost of all the smokers, drinkers, teenage drivers, dopers, malnourished kids in our country -- all unhealthy because of the choices of others.

3) Our nation leads the world in medical innovation because it is still profitable. Socialized medicine removes this motivation.

4) Our nation attracts the best doctors from all over the world because they can make money here. Again, socialized medicine quashes this incentive.

"Health care for all." I don't care who the candidate is, please don't let these seductive words deceive you. Contrary to what Michael Moore wants us to believe, socialized medicine will provide less health and almost no care.

I found Michelle Obama's message very inspiring.

There are so many hateful, dark-hearted people on this board that cannot help but think the absolute worst of people.

Don't you people realize that when you say "Obama is a socialist and he wants to kill babies, SCARY! BOO!," that those ranting, baseless claims are the result of the same type of belligerent ignorance that leads some people to say "Mormons are cultists that want to polygamize our teenage daughters, SCARY! BOO!"

If you didn't find her speech convincing, why can't you just say "She gave a nice speech. She has a lovely family. I just happen to disagree with some of her husband's policies, and agree with more of McCain's."

But no, that's no fun -- it doesn't give us an opportunity for any recreational hate! So instead, she's a Nazi! It's a conspiracy! Everyone to the bunkers!

In the mean time, hothead John and pothead Cindy get a free ride, because they have (R) after their names.

It's a screwy world when we look at the Obamas, then look at the McCains, and think the adulterous beer merchants are the ones representing family values!!!

Please provide some evidence that McCain would do more to protect our country than Obama. The notion that only Republicans can keep our country safe was concocted by Karl Rove during the 2004 presidential campaign, and it is just plain stupid. Any president would do everything in his power to protect our country.

To "Re: Keith In Colorado" Research things out for yourself, she said she hated America... Straight from the horses mouth, she has stated it twice, and you can find the Audio on it too! Keith in Colorado is telling you the truth! While your at it, check out Obama's relationship with a known bomber of the Pentagon who wished he would have done a "Better Job of it", a convicted felon, a Slum Lord in Chicago, and several more questionable characters as friends. This doesn't make him a bad person mind you, but with guys like this and Rev Wright, I certainly question his beliefs and intentions as a President and an individual. Check this stuff out, the Democratic Party certainly wants to keep it under wraps, not that I think McCain is perfect by any means, I think he is liberal himself, and I don't like that at all, but let's call a SPADE a SPADE, and a Heart a Heart, Apples are Apples, and Oranges are Oranges my friend. And I admit as a republican McCain is a Apple trying to be half an Orange too!

Whenever anyone in support of Obama gets offended, they automatically think we're Limbaugh, Hannity, McCain lovers. Not me! You're right though - they're all Neocons! The thing you don't realize, is that they're all of the saame mold and have the same common agenda (republicans and democrats) They've just duped you into thinking they're different. And sad as it is, you believe on its face, that everything Michelle said, she actually believes and embraces. Get one thing straight - if a politician's lips are moving, he's lying. She's nothing more than an opportunist like her husband. All you need to do is check out their history and previous positions they've taken and you'll know of a surety, that all this hype is only for the purpose of getting Obama elected.

The Obamas are masters at flowery speech making. They can talk, oh yeah they can spew words but there is no experience, maturity or knowledge behind those words. They are empty expressions. If they love America there would never have been a question such as, "why don't you recite the Pledge of Allegiance, why don't you put your hand over your heart and show respect for our American flag?"
It's because they do not have respect for the Constitution or the American flag. There are still questions about Obama that need to be asked and need to have answers. Barack is unable to make a decision, he is wishy washy and he wants to be President of our United States of America? Just because he is black does not make him any smarter, more knowledgable, more experienced. He didn't even vote a yes or no in the senate hearings(all 196) of them. Hillary told us that. I believe this guy is under the control of his wife's thumb and his Mother's thumb. Being a public speaker does not make you good material for President. Heaven help us if Barack wins. Our children and grandchildren won't have a chance.

HOW is possible that the best country in the world does NOT medical insurance for all like other countries...WHY? because the insurance companies and medical, drugs, doctors associations, etc companies make A LOT OF MONEY OF IT!!!
MEDICAL INSURANCE SHOULD BE A BENEFIT, NOT A PRIVILEGE!!!
And also, we already pay for those people that doesnt like to work also, but we still paying taxes, it is our responsability!!! WE NEED TO MAKE SURE POLITICIANS DO THEIR JOB, WE PAY FOR THEM, WE VOPTE FOR THEM, THEY SHOULD WORK FOR THIS NATION!!!
WE NEED MEDICAL BENEFITS...FOR ALL!!!

Your point is right on. The healthy, those who take care of their bodies, will be subsidizing those who don't.

I can see it all now. Under socialized medicine smoking, drinking, eating unhealthy fast foods, failing to exercise and alotta other things considered by the government to bad for ones health will soon be legislated into law as illegal.
Universal health care | 1:45 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
The Commonwealth Fund published a study in 2007 comparing the health care systems of six developed nations including the United States. The US was the only nation without some kind of universal health care. The US ranked last or next-to-last in measures of quality, access, efficiency, equity, and success in promoting healthy lives. And in spite of all this, our health care costs more (overall, not just in terms of out-of-pocket expenses to the healthcare consumer) per capita than health care in any of these countries with "socialized" medicine.

No health care system is perfect, but the US system is particularly flawed. Fear-mongers would have you believe that universal health care would be the death of quality medical care in America, but the evidence overwhelmingly says otherwise.

"Empty expression"? Perhaps you've been dulled by too much rhetorical frat-speak.
Let's see what eight years of 'experience', 'maturity', and 'knowledge' has gotten us - war, insecurity, loss of standing in the world community and oh yeah, debt. Debt that surely lessens the chance of our children and grandchildrens' success.
Echoing the talk radio shrill of not saying the Pledge of Allegiance or wearing a flag pin are poor excuses for substantitive issues that we need to address. I'm voting for Obama not because he's black, but because he is the smarter, more knoweledgeable candidate. Very simple. McCain supports the war effort in Iraq. This conflict is a major and on-going battle in the fight against world terror. B. Hussein Osama does not support the effort. He thinks the enemy is in Afghanistan, not Iraq (parroting a Democrat talking point). Well, the enemy is in Afghanistan... and many other places around the globe... including Iraq. And Iran. And Great Britain. And Spain. And in the Netherlands. And America. To name a few places. B. Hussein has no concept of it all. He's naive and ambivalent. Thank God for Bush who had the courage to go against the populous and go after the terrorists. Bill made some effort but failed miserably. He even got confused for a while there, and thought the enemy was Milosevic in Serbia.

I can't wait to hear Cindy McCain get up at the GOP convention and talk about all the support John gave her when she was stealing drugs from a children's charity. And how as a 24yo she started running around with a 42yo married man who hadn't even gotten a divorce yet.

Perhaps she'll tell us how grateful she is that even though she's a multimillionaire through no work or talent of her own the US government --WE -- still send them a military pension check and a Senate salary check every month even though they don't see fit to use any of it to pay their realty taxes in CA.

I know the solution. Let's declare war on all those countries. Better yet, let's invade without declaring war. After all, we are so good at taking over countries and establishing peace and warm, fuzzy feelings towards the US. Just look at our success in Iraq!

Get real! Barack Obama is keenly aware that terrorists are out there. But unlike the Republicans, he can protect us from them without jeopardizing so many of the lives of our bravest men and women. The war in Iraq has done nothing to stop terrorism; there are far more terrorists in Iraq now than there were in 2003. When we go on the rampage we only breed hate towards America. We need to focus on protecting our own soil and on repairing diplomatic ties to the nations of the world. Perpetual warfare is not the answer.
re: wrz | 2:40 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
The "enemy" is also right here in this country.
When we can understand what motivates people like Timothy McVeigh (a right-wing former soldier)
we'll be able to claim absolute victory or terrorism.
Until then, it's all ideological claptrap with a very large economic motivation behind the action.

AMom'who knows' 5:49 am: "Which is it? An America that she loves ... or one that she is ashamed and embarrassed of?"

It's not "Either-Or." If you really love, you care. In fact, without love, it's unlikely you'll ever be ashamed or embarrassed.

Prisoners serving "hard time" often have loved ones on the outside. People they have embarrassed, and who are ashamed of what they have done. People who, nevertheless, love them deeply despite shame and embarrassment.

On the other hand, who is ever ashamed or embarrassed by the incarceration of a total stranger?

Feelings for a country can be much the same. "My country, right or wrong, and I don't care which" expresses neither pride nor love of country, only belligerent tribalism.

If you really love a country or a person, you want that country or person to be the very best that it can be (apologies to the US Army).

B. Hussein Osama has the right solution. Sit down and have a nice meeting. Neville Chamberlain found it very useful.

"Better yet, let's invade without declaring war."

Actually that worked quite well for Bill and his unprovoked attack on Serbia, a sovereign nation.

"After all, we're so good at taking over countries and establishing peace and warm, fuzzy feelings towards the US. Just look at our success in Iraq!"

For a Democrat, you're fairly smart.

"Get real! Barack Obama is keenly aware that terrorists are out there."

I know. He wants to sit with for a spell... maybe play a little bridge.

"But unlike the Republicans, he can protect us from them without jeopardizing so many of the lives of our bravest men and women."

How?

"The war in Iraq has done nothing to stop terrorism"

Really? When was the latest terror attack on the US?

"...there are far more terrorists in Iraq now than there were in 2003."

Yes, but they've decided to act sensibly... until B. Hussein takes over as US president and pulls US troops out. They're no dummies.

The "enemy" is also right here in this country."

I know. They are smack dab in the middle of their convention as we speak.

"When we can understand what motivates people like Timothy McVeigh (a right-wing former soldier)
we'll be able to claim absolute victory or terrorism."

Motives have been identified... Hatred for America and Americans.

McVeigh was a one-shot deal. Muslim terrorists are organized world-wide. A vast army. Like ants marching in a forest. They all know the objects. And there is not hurry. The lull right now is waiting for the next US president. Terrorists are pulling for B. Hussein Obama and his promised action to pull the troops. Nice victory. They love this guy with the "funny" (his word) name.

"Until then, it's all ideological claptrap with a very large economic motivation behind the action."

Nothing's free.
