Lee: "The odds are that McCain is going to pick a woman candidate."

Um, what odds are you talking about? You mean the odds that say Romney will be the nominee 5/2 compared to Palin's 7/1 odds?

Do a little research before posting.

The only good that can come from Romney being selected as VP would be a McCain loss in the general election. With a very strong Democratic House and perhaps a filibuster proof senate a McCain Administration would likely be a failed one term administration, destroying Romney's political future in the process. However Romney's exposure along with the LDS Church between September and the general election would likely help promote him into the 2012 GOP primary selection. His party work during this time however, could have much of the same effect without the risk of winning. If McCain were to win with Romney as VP, Romney's only hope would to become president during their term and save the country.

A Romney for president in 2012 would be a good thing, because if McCain loses and Obama wins an Obama Administration will very likely turn out to be another Jimmy Carter failed administration, opening the way for a successful election of a conservative republican president and perhaps even congress. Americans' personal economic well being is far more important to them during an election than the wild cultural and environmental hopes of the far left ideologues.

Biased article ... Mike Huckabee was a baptist minister for a brief period of time. He was GOVERNOR of ARKANSAS for a much longer period. He has more experience than Gov. Romney.

The article doesn't even mention the fact Huckabee was a GOVERNOR (longer, I might add, than Romney)

I hope he takes anyone but Mitt. Mitt had too many election year conversions to make me feel comfortable with him sitting number 2. Hopefully McCain will send flowers, chocolate and get on his knees and beg Colin Powell. I doubt it will work but one can wish. Out of all the people he has to choose from there isn't really any that excites me. I vote for the top of the ticket but it makes it easier when the ticket is strong.

I'm old enough to remember President Eisenhower. Not since then have I seen our nation in the predicament we are in today. We, the American people, have painted ourselves into a corner. It's McCain or Obama. One of those will be the next president of the United States.

In-fighting over such inane partisan political positions that look no further than next week has placed us is one heck of a bind.

The ONLY hope we have is that McCain picks Mitt Romney and wins the election. Why is that so hard for conservative America to see?
theo | 12:12 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Does anyone out there realize that it does not mean you are pro-abortion just because you are pro-choice? Mitt Romney has made his personal choice pro-life, but realizes that neither he nor any man/person can take away the gift of freedom of choice (and accountability) that our creator bestowed upon each of us as our birthright?
Romney all the way | 12:14 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
If McCain doesn't choose Romney as his VP he has no chance at all. Romney can expose brilliantly the double talk and read between the lines messages of Democrats. Democrats know that! They fear him.
Lee | 12:16 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
THE ODDS : I have done the research. SINCE the selection of Joe Biden, those 7-1 odds have changed. McCain has the white male vote. Biden was selected for Obama to increase Obama's odds of gaining that white male vote.New polls today are showing that Biden has not given Obama a bump in the polls. Now,Palin is the favored choice because McCain wants to increase his odds with the female vote.Another woman whose name has been tossed around is Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson of Texas. However, she has stated that she has no interest in the VP job. In addition, she is not pro-life.

Finally, I have always thought that Romney would make an excellant candidate. But the landscape has changed.A lot of people would say that Mitt is just another wealthy white guy like McCain. It is still possible that McCain will pick Mitt anyway. So be it. But I think that Sarah Palin would bring a lot to this ticket that Mitt,or any other "white guy" would not do.

McCain is going to pick Romney whether you like it or not.
Wake up America! | 12:45 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I am old enough to remember President Eisenhower and have watched closely each presidential race since, Ive pretty much been there, done that, and got the T-Shirt. When JFK was winning the White House there was a tremendous uproar over a "Catholic" president. Once there, we, all of America both Democrats and Republicans came to love him as the statesmen he was. His religion took a serious back seat to his leadership qualities as it should have from the beginning.

Later President Reagan redefined the presidency and today no one can look back and deny what a great American he was. He loved and revered the LDS faith.

Inane political in-fighting has painted America into a corner; McCain or Obama! Think about that for a moment.

Is it not clear to any conscientious conservative thinking American that the "far right" evangelicals dont have a clue about what is at stake for our future? The "left wing global warming fanatics" are fatalists.

Senator McCain is not a spring chicken! The ONLY hope we have is a McCain - Romney ticket and McCain wins. Why is that so hard for clear thinking American's to see?

Comparing governing Arkansas to governing Massachussettes is like comparing driving a bicycle to flying an airplane.

Although Huckabee was a Governer much longer than Romney, Massachussettes has 3 times the population, infrastructure and business.

I'd take the guy who flew an airplane for 4 years over the guy who drove a bicycle for 12 years any day.

Anyone who believes Romney is not a true Christian in every sense of the word is totally ignorant of what 'Mormonism' espouses. It has been said "by their fruits ye shall know them". Examine Romney's accomplishments; go further and explore his faith..then ye will know he practices what he preaches and lives what he believes.
Mormon president? | 12:52 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
How many adds from the Dem's will allude to McCain's age and health and if Romney is selected as the veep then the old "Mormon President" adds will start to show their ugly face as well. Thanks to the bigotry and unfounded lies that the evangelical hypocrite's spread across the country when Romney was in the primaries, the GOP is going to have a tough time righting the ship and setting things straight if McCain chooses Romney.
Jon | 12:56 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
The evangelical vote is way too huge for McCain to win with Romney on the ticket. I have nothing against evangelicals, unfortunately a huge number of them just don't trust mormons.
um, dumb | 1:00 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
"Republican Mitt Romney...will be campaigning in the shadow of the Democratic National Convention in Denver today on behalf of the GOP."

But we here at the Mitt love-fest DSnooze will not treat such a non-story as mere shadow, instead giving it a front-page splash that it deserves! Yeah! All Mormon, all the time!

Lame-o

Let the Dems have their moment. The GOP will be coming around the bend soon enough in Minnesota.

Sheesh, what a thunder-stealer.
Re "Scott | 2:16 a.m." | 1:01 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I think you're right. McCain doesn't have a chance. Most Americans are caught up in Obama mainia right now and the media will insure Obama is the winner this year no matter what (no matter who McCain chooses for VP).

Why would Romney risk starting with the stigma of being on a loosing ticket when he can wait 4 years, swoop in after Obama gets into office and starts his plan of bloating the Government Burocracy, taxing the middle-class into oblivion, shutting down capitalist-companies that provide our jobs, Disarming America, ignoring security risks, and he eventually falls on his face. That's when some Americans will be fed up and ready for a change again and Romney has a better chance of winning?
Hey Lee | 1:06 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Nice analysis, I havn't had a chance to look at polls yet but everything you wrote sounds reasonable. I see you mentioned Palin and Hutchinson as two possible women he may consider. I always wondered if Elizabeth Dole would be a better selection if McCain went female, especially in midwest states. In the end the VP won't be the deciding factor for most but in a close election, who knows if it will be a difference maker (if obama chose hillary I think it would of been game over though imo).

You're kidding right? You expect us to believe you are on the fence about voting for Obama or McCain and only McCain's VP choice will push you one way or the other?

If so, you're not the "Anonymous" I've grown to know and love in these pages.

Mitt Romney is a Flip Flopper. Mitt please go back to Taxxachusetts.

I have lived in the South. Most Evangelicals are bigots and they will never agree to give credence to a Mormon as evidenced by their opposition to Romney. Go Mitt!

AK Boy | 1:16 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I lived in AK for 10 yrs, and Sarah Palin is a true fiscal conservative. She sliced unneeded spending by incredible amounts up there, and is doing a great job.

However, I can't see McCain picking her. A Romney/Palin ticket would rock the house.

The only thing keeping me from a libritarian vote is McCains choice for VP. And the only choice he could make is Mitt Romney!!!!!!!
Mitt draws Clinton Supporters | 1:38 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Women in general dig this guy. He isn't pompous, he's been completely faithful to his family, and he's got sincere charm. The only flaws he has are that he was once pro-choice (not pro-abortion) which shows a sensitivity to womens rights; he doesn't shoot large enough animals (sounds like the ladies will like that), and he made a dumb pet decision while taking his family on vacation to the national parks (not Hawaii). Many Hillary supporters will vote for him over Biden any day because he's one rare creature, a sincere, courteous, trustworthy politician.

I agree, without him McCain has no chance.
Larry M | 1:46 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Voting as a block will be the end of us just as it was at Nauvoo. We are lemmings who think Republicans are the only way. The harsh criticisms of our faith come from conservatives, yet we'll only vote for them. On many issues including immigrant bashing, the poor, international relations, the environment etc., we side with Republicans and not with the scriptures.

Spoiler for Obama
This is a regular dirty trick of the Republican party
I suppose Obama needs to spoil John McCains Party
This is what is wanting to run our Country
Is it any wonder America is going to H_ll?
America is nearly a 3 rd World Nation
The Democrats will have to bail America out of the costly war that never should have been once more
With wounded Soldiers, The cost will continue to spiral
Thanks to the Bush Government

As Rep Jim Hansen was fond of saying, you don't shoot a race horse because it only wins 9 out of 10 races.

The question is not who is the perfect VP candidate, because no matter who the vp candidate is some will find fault. The question is, who has the most to offer to the most voters.

Mitt has the most, even if he is not perfect for everyone. That is what will drive McCain's decision.

NOBAMA | 2:07 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Those evangelicals in the south or for that matter, anywhere would pick a McCain/Romney over Obama/Biden any day of the week. To them it would be that old axiom we have heard before: A lesser of two evils!
Pine | 2:11 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
it still bothers me that when Romney was asked why any his five boys didn't serve in the military he said they were serving our country by getting him elected
ello | 2:21 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I think that Mitt would make a better VP than Cheney, but we are still missing the point.
We have the chance to vote for Obama and Biden! This is a dream come true.
What about the Supreme Court? | 2:42 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I like the idea of letting Obama try to steer this wonderful country of ours and then letting Romney and whoever (Palin sounds good, I dont know her but he'll pick someone smart & good) become elected the next election cycle.

HOWEVER. THIS election determines who will get to seat several! Supreme Court Judges. These judges do a lot for America and its goodness and, yes, morality. I am SOO SO SOO glad Hilary didnt win, she would have been terrible in that regard.
However, Obama's voting record, what little there is in his short experience, is EVEN MORE LIBERAL than Hilary's! So this is why I feel the urgency to elect someone with their heads on right.

Also... I dont mind that Mitt flip flopped on abortion - it (as someone said already) shows he's not a puppet of the LDS church, and that he THINKS things through, not merely votes from the party card. (That's another thing I like about McCain - although he's not who I'd have chosen, I appreciate that he can and does work with both parties, and votes using his head rather than the party card.
Mitt was a plus now he's a - | 3:25 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
The heck with Mitt now. That's a far fetched story here that Mitt Romney was (was is the key word here, because he sounded kind of tuff when running for President a few times, the rest of the time he sounded gay per se) upbeat, and in GOP attack mode (oh I am sure he had a smile on his face and acted like he was a Bishop in his ward on the stand to) during a private meeting with a number of liberal reporters. I really don't care that Romney, is much beloved in Utah because of his saving of the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics and through his LDS faith, we know he is on the shortlist of people the Republican presidential candidate and McCain could name him as his vice presidential running mate, but McCain hates Mormon's and don't know much about their kind. But all the best to him, hopefully he'll find a job in Government soon. Seeing he's poor and looking for work ?!. Like the rest of the middle class he ignores along with McCain and also Obamacon to. But their all we got to vote for, oh well. BYE Mitt.
I Predict! | 3:30 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
You are all just deluding yourselves, hoping to get a Mormon toehold on the Presidency. McCain is only using Romney. He will pick Lieberman as his Vice Presidential running mate. That way he can ignore the right wing (including you Mormons) and attract the indepenents and moderate Democrats. No matter who he chooses, you are not going to vote for Obama. So he has nothing to gain from choosing Mitt.
vaase | 4:09 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
you throw a pearl to swines and they will never know what it is, let alone how valuble it is.

No matter what Romney does, It will always be his religion that sets him apart from the rest of the v.p.list to be or not to b.

Mitt is a lighthouse to the world!
He has dwemonstrated it and done that.

Get off your knees, stand up and be a man. Do not carry McCain's water for him. Gee whilikers boy.

I too am old enough to remember President Eisenhower and have watched closely each presidential race since first learning in 6th grade social studies that we even had a president named Eisenhower once. Cool.

I believe Nixon was president at the time, but I digress.

Ronald Reagan was good. He changed the trajectory of this nation in a way Nixon did notin a way that Clinton did not.

And is it not clear to any conscientious conservative-thinking American that the far right radical evangelicals dont have a clue about the real dangers of global warming and the impact on the economy and our posterity?

Senator McCain is no Spring chickenhe is a chicken of a later season. Our ONLY hope is that we have a McCain-Huckabee ticket. That way, they both go down in a fiery ball of rhetoric and Obamas landslide will top them all.

Why is that so hard for clear-thinking Americans to see . . .?
Jess | 10:56 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Some people claim that Mormons aren't Christian. But the methods used by these so-called "Christians" in attacking Romney reveal very clearly the being in whom they really place thier trust.
