BYU fans ZIPP IT, stay on your own article. Lets get this thing called football started already. I cant wait for a great season.

Go UTES.

Dear Palls,

Please stop assuming the position of a mental midget.
Re: Palls | 5:02 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
What's with the preemptive directive for TDS fans to "ZIPP [sic] it, and stay off our articles? They're not going to go away just because you told them to, and it IS a free country. Stamping out free speech is the TDS' faculty and administrators' MO; not ours.

Who really cares what they say anyway?

With Alex Smith being mentioned in the same sentence as Ryan Leaf as being the biggest busts in NFL history, I can see why you don't want others to post on yewtie articles.

Go Utes! it will be a wonderful test of the Utes. Michigan is out to avenge the appy state loss in their season opener. hopefully the utes do it again this year and humble the almighty wolverine cubs. michigan thinks they are so good they never play nonconference games outside of their own stadium. so let's stick it to them in the big house. make the state of Utah proud. go Utes!
so lucky | 8:52 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Growing up Jopu got to sit in the stands and watch Michigan beat hapless foes in the comfortable confines of their own stadium. Now this Saturday he will get to experience this as a player.

Michigan 24
Utah 3
Joppru | 8:58 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
It'd be fun to see Chris match his brother's success in another Michigan-Utah game, a catch and a win, for Utah. Utah has a legitimate shot to shock the BCS world with a win in the Big House.

It's too bad these blogs can't be restricted to true fans. Far too many trash-talking children have infested these blogs. "Palls" and "To: Ute fans" with their WEAK "eweties", "zoobies" smack are just two of them.
U Can Count On It | 9:12 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
I know ute fans are thinking their team will be able to beat Michigan. Better get used to disappointment, it ain't gonna happen. After last year's embarrassing loss to Appalachian St the Wolverines are not making the same mistake of taking their first game lightly. I almost feel sorry for what's going to happen to Utah because Michigan's D is so fired up for this game.
Re: Ute fans | 9:28 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Looks like he'll also be mentioned with guys like John Beck, and Ty Detmer, Luke Staley, Brandon Doman, Curtis Brown, Johnny Harline who are known for their lack of production in the NFL.
Not so fast, it took Steve Young about 5 years to pull his head out. Once Smith figures out that playing on the worst team in the league won't do much for his career, he'll sign somewhere else, be the back up for a year or two and then once Peyton Manning retires he'll lead the Colts to another super bowl.
what a coincidence | 9:30 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Gee imagine that, Joppru and A'asa are suddenly good enough to play in this game. And it's NOT for sentimental reasons because they're from Michigan or anything like that, Kyle reassures us. But I like his caveat: "He has earned his way into the lineup IN CERTAIN PACKAGES." Would that include the "still early in the 1st quarter" package or the "we got blown out, it's late in the 4th quarter" package? It's funny how Kyle is always trying to put lipstick on the pig.
Ernest T. Bass | 9:46 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
This is going to be a great game! But I'm a little concerned about some of our players. Joppru? A'asa? What country are these guys from? I mean, I can relate to names like Brian Johnson and such, but where are all these other names coming from? We do still have some Johnsons on the team, don't we? Could somebody please check to make sure our team still has some Johnsons? Thanks.
Two Games | 9:58 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
I'm an alum of the U of U and OSU. It is going to be great to see my two teams beat Michigan in the first game of the season and the last game of the season.

Michigan will be a decent team this year, but the Utes can take them. A new coach, a new system (spread in the Big 10?), seniors who moved on and a general lack of fire in the belly have primed Michigan for another defeat in their season opener.
re: what a coincidence | 10:00 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
What is the big deal... if the coach can get these kids in for a play or two in or near their home town then great. they have worked hard and when will they get another chance like this. You are really digging for something negative to say about kwhit aren't you. I mean really don't you have anything better to do. If your beloved mendenhall would have said the same thing you would have stated what a great guy he is, and how much he cares about his kids...
re: Re: Utes fans | 10:15 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
"Not so fast, it took Steve Young about 5 years to pull his head out".

Steve Young started out playing in the USFL for a mega deal and after that league folded he waited his turn as a backup behind Joe Montana until the organization finally made Montana retire so they could have Young play. Please try to get your facts straight so we don't have to explain EVERYTHING to you yewt fans.

Thanks
re: re: what a coincidence | 10:42 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
No, Mendenhall also plays 3rd & 4th stringers in games, like when the outcome has been decided or due to injuries. Or he'll just say that's where this player is from so we're going to get him some playing time. The difference is he doesn't lie to the media that a player has suddenly become good enough to get to play in a certain game (that just happens to be where the kid is from) and it's not because that's where the kid is from. But Kyle is becoming famous for stunts like this as a head coach, just like last year when he tried to justify the on-side kick against Wyoming after his team was ahead by 43 points.
Re: Two Games | 10:49 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Joe Tiller did a pretty good job implementing the spread in the Big 10, albeit not in his first season.

GO UTES!!!
chance | 11:03 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Michigan is down in their program and may have a rough season with a new coach and no qb. Utah is up and could make this A REAL GAME.

Despite that I would not call this following in his brothers footsteps. Not a good comparison: all-american and leading reciever in Big Blue history vs one game in the stadium. Is that a stretch?

Anyway, go Utes, go MWC!
UTE in Utah County | 11:58 a.m. Aug. 25, 2008
I'm really pumped for this game. Realistially, this is going to be a tough task to pull off a victory in Ann Arbor. That's a very, very tough venue and a team very rich in tradition (though tradition only counts until kickoff). HOWEVER, it is a game that is not out of reach. If the Utes can play solidly on defense (which is expected), and the offense can establish some reasonable success in both running and passing against a very solid Michigan D, this will be a slugfest. GO UTES!! Start off the year with a great game!!!
Steve Young | 12:01 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
...started with Tampa Bay in 1985 after the USFL folded. His 3-yr record as a starter was 3-16, where his TD/INT ratio was a pedestrian 11:21, and completed < 55% of his passes.

Alex Smith's led his team to 7 wins his 1st year alone. His 3-yr tenure with SF produced a TD/INT ratio [19:31} that was slightly better than Young's, whereas his pass completion stats were about the same.

Please try to get your facts straight so we don't have to explain EVERYTHING to you kittens.
Ute Nation | 12:19 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
As a member of the Ute tribe, it offends me personally when the university that represents our tribe is called names such as "Yewtes". Most of the disrespect is from the BYU fans, the supposed LDS population that considers us their brothers. I would appreciate it if you could honor us and our heritage by calling us by our actual name, the Utes.

Partly because of the name of the school and partyly because I love football, I am very interested in the Utes season. They have all the potential in the world this year and can do whatever they want. I hope they stay focused and motivated for every game, so that the losses to the lesser teams doesn't happen again this year. I believe Coach Whitt has learned his lesson, though, and will correct that problem this year.

Go Utes (notice the spelling please) !!
Steve Young facts? | 12:44 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Ah, does the term Tampa Bay ring any bells to coogers?

Young did not go from the USFL to Montana's back-up.
DARNREED | 1:01 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
I WISH THE UTES ALL THE BEST FORTUNES AGAINST MICHIGAN IN ANN ARBOR. A WIN CAN ONLY HELP INCREASE THE INTEREST IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE, AND FOOTBALL IN THE STATE OF UTAH. I HOPE THAT UTAH AND BYU CAN BOTH WORK THROUGH ANY ADVERSITY THAT MAY COME AND HAVE A GREAT YEAR.
And your point is.... | 1:06 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Do cougar fans/Utah haters think they're going to convince us it's time to get rid of Whittingham? Do they know that's a tough sell for a winning coach who gave us 24 victories [including 3 bowl games] in 3 yrs? Ute fans don't dispute the superior coaching Meyer brought to the table, but none of us ever expected him to replicate our former coaching great. Nebraska fired THEIR coach after a 9-win season, and look what happened to THEM! Even after that inexplicable debacle at UNLV, I don't think Kyle has done enough to warrant dismissal. Especially after only 3 seasons.
RE-Joppru | 8:58 a.m | 1:16 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
I was just trying to get the ball rolling early, meaning that there are always silly Byu fans making silly remarks. Just like there are silly Utah fans making silly remarks on the Cougar boards. So go get a hug from someone, you sir deserve it.
Go UTES!!!!
Ref: Ute fans | 1:56 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
You still lose because none of them were first picks. Only first picks can be considered BUSTS. I'm glad you took the bait and responded like you did. You yewties are so predictable and clueless. You don't know the difference between a first run bust and a long shot late draft. How many yewtie QBs have super bowl rings and how COUGAR QBs have superbowl rings? As for the 49ers being a team, Alex has something to do with that.
Re: Ute Nation | 2:29 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Take note Cougar fans.

Now if we could only get the Utah fans to show the same respect with names.
Question | 2:33 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Is Sat game against Michigan a regional ABC or 100% national audience?
Tampa Bay | 2:51 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
That team was a total joke before Young got there, very similar to the situation John Beck found himself in with Miami. Yewt fans shouldn't make dumb statements like "5 years before Steve Young pulled his head out" for a situation that wasn't even his fault. Do we have to explain EVERYTHING to the yewts??
Re: Ute Nation | 2:53 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
If insulting a Lamanite tribe is what it takes to attempt a slight at the Univ. of Utah, the TDS fans continue to do so. What do they care about other people? In fact, what do they know about people outside of Utah County? The Campus is their World.
Re: Steve Young | 2:54 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
You beat me to the punch. Its that selective memory they have down south for some reason. Must be something in the water, er blue kool aid
Cougar Club | 3:03 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Good luck against Michigan. The MWC needs all of the wins against BCS teams it can get. If BJ can have success throwing the ball early, and get into a rhythmn, you should be fine.
Re UTE NATION | 3:15 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008

What are the yewties | 3:28 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
smoking? To mention Steve Young (Hall of Famer/Superbowl Hero) in the same breathe with Alex (the biggest bust in NFL history) Smith is ludicrous. Yewties, you need to get a clue and figure out what's going on.
re: Ute Nation | 3:30 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Seriously doubt you're from the tribe, looks like another fan posing as such.

If the U fans and tribe members are so concerned about this then the best thing to do would be to get a new name for the school. That will show respect for our Native Americans much better than Utah's fans posting derogatory comments about their rivals, calling their rivals & the school various juvenile names, and finishing no better than 3rd in the conference (hey, try finishing 1st if you want to make the Utes proud of you using their name! And no on-side kicks when you're up by 43 points, stop embarrassing yourselves and the Ute Tribe!).
Utes vs, Yewts | 3:41 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
A U of U fan that posts intelligent and meaningful comments is a Ute. But one that posts immature tripe is a yewt (or yoot or ewet etc.) and will not garner any respect. Does this help shed some light on things? And I'm sure some of you will reciprocate the same way to BYU fans while others among you will decide to not go the juvenile route. Good luck with your decision.
Re: Ref: Ute fans | 3:48 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Only first picks can be busts? So Ryan Leaf wasn't a bust then, since he was the second pick in the draft next to Peyton Manning.

By the way, John beck was a second-round pick not a late-round pick longshot. Beck was supposed to be the future and he hasn't lived up to the billing quite yet. And I don't see any indications that will change in the future (Dolphins named Pennington starter and drafted Chad Henne in the second round).

So far, his career looks worse off than Alex Smith's. At least Alex has started the majority of his career, with one solid statistical season to boot. But let me guess, using your biased logic, Beck will get a pass because of his team's rebuilding efforts and the inclusion of new management, while Smith is a bust despite his team's rebuilding efforts and four offensive coordiantors in four years. Contradiction? Flawed logic?

UTE in Utah County | 4:13 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
I totally agree with the comments about respect for the Ute name. This team is named after a tribe of native americans that deserves respect. Regardless of the reasoning for doing it, intentionally misspelling it is classless and derogatory toward the tribe.
re: re: Ute Nation | 4:17 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Actually, I am from the Ute tribe. And it actually DOES offend me and my other Ute tribe members when we are called "Yewtes" or whatever other version you want to use.

As for Ute fans posting derogatory comments..I don't condone it but they do not represent our tribe. The University does and they do a very fine job at that. As for the football team finishing 3rd, I can handle that as long as our tribe is not shown disrespect by the coaches or other school leaders.

The indians (not lamanites like BYU fans call us) are an important part of Utah history and American history. I'm not sure why you feel the need to call an ignorant fan a "Yewte", even though he or his comment has nothing to do with our tribe. Why not just call him "ignorant" instead?

If that is your standard, should Utah fans all come up with a nickname that is derogatory to the mormon faith to call anyone that posts ignorant things here on these articles? Hopefully you get my point.

Again I say, go Utes (notice the spelling)!!
re: Steve Young | 4:22 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Hey stat man, where'd you get your info? Alex Smith's first season as a starter was 2005, right after he got drafted (the 49ers' list two starters in their 2005 stat results: Smith and Tim Rattay. Smith played more than Rattay). And they did NOT have 7 wins that year, they only had 4 wins.

2006 was when the team had 7 wins but it wasn't just Smith. They added a number of players through trades that helped, plus they picked up Trent Dilfer who helped Smith quite a bit, according to their website.

But uh-oh what's this: in 2005 they only had 5 wins. Oops too bad, so much for getting a ring.

Don't you follow your own school's NFL players or even bother to look up their stats? You do have the Internet, don't you? Sheesh, what an embarrassment.
re: Steve Young correction | 4:27 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
typo, should read: in 2007 they only had 5 wins.

Sure buddy, whatever. After all we can always accept these anonymously posted comments as true, and everything else we see on the Internet, too.
oh my god | 4:55 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
seriously this "yewts" thing has to end, is this just a way the mormon population in provo can come up with an insult that does not offend god? it is neither clever or funny, aside from the ute tribe how could this offend the fans? of course i can see both sides, as a die hard ute fan i find the term "zoobies" just as lame and uninsulting. Kittens or pussies seems more in line! even though smith was the first draft choice how can he be a bigger flop than john beck, to be 3rd on the depth chart behind chad henne and josh mccown, then behing chad pennington. i guess enough said
re:what a coincidence | 5:12 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
And how do you know he is lying. Have you been to all the practices. Do you have some insight that the rest of don't have regarding how this kid has performed. I guess it is inconceivable that he has actually earned some playing time.
Re: Ute Nation | 5:20 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
So Ute Nation, I assume you are proud of YOUR Utes and their annual F U BYU chant?

All other Ute fans who are LDS simply look at the ground and kick the dirt as if nothing is being said. But that's ok, because in the name of sports anything goes, right?

Stop pretending that only BYU has issues when BOTH sides have more than their share.
Oregonian | 6:03 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Utes 24 Michigan 20. The Wolverines will be breaking in a new coach and an entirely new offensive scheme. Not a recipe for early success. The Ute defense can handle them up front. The Ute's offensive experience will get them 2 touchdowns and their defense will set up another one.

While it pains me as a Cougar fan to say it...GO UTES!

Yes, both sides do have issues. But When insulting ones team also insults the first real Americans I would advise Byu fans to rethink things. I don't mind harmless comments but the yewt, and zoobie names should stop. they're so classless. And i'm only 16, come on, you people should know this by now. Respect! and go UTES!!!

Hey BYU fans, go and read D&C 4:6-
"Remember faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, BROTHERLY KINDNESS, godliness, CHARITY, HUMILITY, diligence."
Now, granted, there are a ton of presumably LDS Utah fans that are downright ridiculous, but shame on both of you. Sounds like the Cougar faithful aren't living right "on and off the field" based by your comments. I'm gearing this comment towards the Cougar fans only because this is a UTAH ARTICLE. I feel sorry for you.
