A Jewess

The only similarity is in size. I find it most amusing that Mormons call me a "gentile."

Anonymous

As a Jew, I take offense at this. Mormons are nothing like us.

The Rock

There are significant differences between members of the Jewish faith and the LDS faith to be sure.

I am LDS and appreciate the good Jewish people that I have encountered. Last April my wife and I were flying from Seattle to Chicage. A good Jewish man came and sat next to my wife. As we took off this man excuse himself so he could pray for a safe flight. We appreciated him doing so.

My wife and this man (I wish we had gotten his name) had a wonderful conversation for three hours. We were surprised and the simularitities between the two religions. I expected some commonality but nothing like my wife found as they compared notes (with neither party attempting to to anything but share and learn).

Those who cannot see the commonality simply have not looked in the right place.

God has and will certainly bless both peoples.

RE; The Rock

You have correctly said, there are significant differences in the two beliefs. To name one difference

Jews are Monotheistic. (A belief in one God)

Isaiah the prophet said, But you are my witnesses, O Israel! says the LORD.
You are my servant. You have been chosen to know me, believe in me, and understand that I alone am God. There is no other God there never has been, and there never will be. I, yes I, am the LORD, and there is no other Savior.

Mormonism is Polytheism, (a belief in many gods)

Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism said, Thus the head God brought forth the Gods in the grand council in the beginning, the head of the Gods called a council of the Gods; and they came together and concocted a plan to create the world and people in it. Joseph Smith, Journal of discourses, vol.6, p.5

There are so many direct quotes that can be found in Mormon scripture to support the fact that the Mormon faith has many gods.

The belief in more than the one true GOD is repugnant to a Jewish believer.

Polytheistic doctrine is unbiblical, God cannot and will not bless it.

Sorry To: Re: The Rock

But Trinitarians believe in three gods as well but do all sorts of gymnastics to pretend otherwise. Three does not equal one no matter what math you are attempting. At least the Mormons are honest in their math and closer to "God in three persons, blessed Trinity" of the Catholic religion. Mormons just tweak it to "God in three personages, blessed Godhead."

Torie

I am Mormon with Jewish ancestors. I would like to thinks there were a few things we might have in common, but I just don't think there are any. Perhaps some of the persecution in both religions could be similar, but both religions have also been persecuted for different reasons.

Cammie

I can see that there are some similarities in both religions(Mormon & Jew)---- you both like to fight and gripe.

David

Perhaps Cammie, that you missed some things in class. Did you know that Martin Luther wrote "On the Jews and their lies" (I believe part xi is where the worst begins) and the activities considered appropriate included destroying synagogues, destroying religious texts, making it impossible to work and many other horrors. Did you also know that Vatican 1 placed blame on an alleged man's death, a man that may or may not have lived thousands of years ago if ever, but should carry blame to modern people and their offspring? What other religion, has other religions so thoroughly condemning that group simply because that group rejects the newly created religion? What other group of people were destroyed almost entirely and en masse and even if they did not practice that or any religion, because of ancestral acceptance of religion? Am I griping? Sorry it has nothing to do with my religion since I have none. I simply detest ignorance or recent history.

ramper

Does Genesis 1:26 "Let us make man in OUR image".. have any value here? Just asking and learning.

To Sorry,

What in the world does Trinitarianism have to do with Judaism?

Get back on topic.

Back to: 1:23pm

I respect your honesty in that Mormonism believes in more than one god. Furthermore, in many gods (poly) theism.

Youre mis-informed of what a Trinitarian believes, whether you say it is a song and dance, it doesnt change what Trinitarian really is.

Your interpretation (three gods in one) is actually called Tri-theism. This isnt the same as Trinitarian.

So what does a Trinitarian believe? real short version.

A Trinitarian is Mono-theistic. (only one God) like the Jew!

The facts of the trinity are clear in scripture:
That is there is only one true God by nature.
There are three persons who are called God, who exercise the rights of God, who share the same attributes, and there are passages where all are present simultaneously distinct.

These teachings are supported in the following scriptures:

1. The Oneness of God
Deut. 6:4 Shema one- Echad vs. Yachid
Isa. 43:10 One God, One Savior
1 Timothy 2:5

2. The distinction of Persons
Baptism of Christ: Matthew 3:16-17
John 14:26; 15:26

3. The deity of the individual Persons
The Father is God
The Deity of Christ
The Deity of the Holy Spirit

This article was more about Mormonism vs. Judaism

Offesive and Disturbing

I'm Jewish from Los Angeles, a Mormon co-worker sent me this link. i am totally offended at being compared to a notoriously right-wing church that
1) has "baptized" Holocaust survivors,
2) claims to have replaced the people of Israel
3) practices extreme political homophobia that is reminiscent of Europe in the 1930s.

Cory if you're reading this: Please don't send any more Mormon stuff or I will file a complaint with Human Resources.

John

Yet another attempt by Mormons trying to mainstream themselves by finding a comparison, tenuous at best, with another faith. Please, if you're so sure of being the one true church, can't y'all just stand on your own? I'm being serious here.

aaron

I couldn't find anything in the article that supported its title except the populations inteh U.S.

same old problem

It is obvious that the misrepresentation of the Holy Trinity continues to be taught in the Mormon Church.

Why? I do not know. But as a practicing Christian I do know this; you don't get it.

God is one: He is represented by the Maker, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. His hand is seen everywhere. God is one.

Please, correct this in whatever vol. and lesson plan you use. You just don't get it.

As to a relationship between the Jews and Mormons? Yeah, like butter is to sand.

a random John

Perhaps the actual presentation was informative, but this article is not. I can see how Jewish people would find it offensive since it predicts what comes across as an inevitable forced conversion, which I'm sure many see as a lovely idea. Certainly the article could have been both more informative and respectful.

Wow!!

I appears that it is ok for a semite to be anti-mormon. We have several examples above. What a paradox.

Collin

Early Israelites were polytheists, or at least some of them. But I agree with Aaron; there is not a lot in the article that supports the title.

Trinitarianism

I was raised Catholic and heard all about "God in three persons, blessed Trinity." I thought it then and I think it now, three does not equal one and faith doesn't change the math. While I appreciate that you would like to believe that trinitarians are "like the Jews" and monotheistic, trinitarians are not. Sorry, but the Muslims don't buy it either. Father, Son (He prayed to his god in the grove which suggests at best demigod status or even henotheism), and holy ghost equals three and that is polytheistic, even with fuzzy math. So, back to the topic, neither Mormon Christians, nor orthodox Christians are like the Jews. First, they are polytheistic and second they accept Jesus as Savior. While the Jews, discount Jesus because of his genealogy. The group Jews for Jesus offers more information that is readable.

Regarding the Genesis "Let Us Make Man in Our Image" verse. Sheesh, God was talking to the angels.

Just a thought....

I have a sneaking suspicion that when we all get to the other side it's not going to matter much where we went to church or what we claimed to believe.
I believe what WILL matter is if we treated others with a little bit of compassion and love. I don't think the Almighty much cares about what we do on Sunday or whatever day our Sabbath is. It's the other six days that are going to add up.
