Voting for Obama will not correct the wrongs of the past. Will he advance America on an unspecified agenda of "hope and change" or will he be another disappointment? He's like most Democrats who talk about the way things should be, and are blind to the reality of economics and statistics. To do all he wants to do - to America, not for - it will take a lot of dough that means taxes. People ridiculed Arthur Laffer's economics for years until they realized that he was right about tax decreases prompting economic growth. Obama still doesn't get it and will kill the economic hopes of the people who have jumped on his superficial bandwagon.

There is, to me, a sad, almost tragic irony to this story.

The ostensive point of the several stories presented is that people should be judged as human beings, without regard to their "race" and/or "color". Yet, the actual point presented is that these people are enthralled with Sen. Obama precisely BECAUSE of those things.

There is barely a mention of any truly important qualification (the “content of their character” part of Dr. King’s speech so many people seem to ignore) that might make choosing Sen. Obama for President something of meaning. Instead is an obsession with the thought of electing someone who is not, fully, “white”. Consequently, rather than illustrating an interest in a comparative record of actual executive ability, this shows just another manifestation of the same racism, with a slight twist, that still infects far too many people.

The fulfillment of my dream will come when the whole concept of "race" is viewed as a relic of some long-ago period when too many people were obsessed with the nonsense of grouping people according to irrelevant physical characteristics. This article merely serves to remind me that such a day appears to remain in the distant future.

The overwhelming theme of this story is that a candidate must be judged favorably, not by the content of his mind, but by the color of his skin.

Would (or better, SHOULD) we see similar fawning adoration if Romney wer nominated, quoting some Mormons whose ancestors were beaten or killed by bigots in Illinois?

Forget the skin color. Obama's policies, and his long association with radicals and criminals are what deserve scrutiny. He is wrong for American on those criteria, regardless of skin color.

Scott McCoy is a state Senator not a Representative. You'd think a professional respectable news source would be able to get the basic facts like this correct.

Looking back | 10:18 a.m. Aug. 23, 2008
Hmmm. Wasn't it former Pres. George H.W. Bush who told the country to read his lips about no new taxes?

And what happened?

Furthermore, what about McCain's family values record? Didn't he have an affair and then divorce his wife to be with his affair?

Sure Pres. Clinton had affairs, but isn't he and Hilary still married for better or for worse?

Isn't that what family values is all about?

Speaking of Sen. Obama's association with radicals and criminals isn't that something in the lines of what Jesus Christ did?

Funny how most Republicans tend to forget things like this.

Obama yes!!! We finally have hope and experience at the top. Not 2 oil men about to plunder the country.

Good, no, great choice Obama. Great!

Claiming to know all about someone, because you listen to right-wing hate radio and digest Fox News makes you "gullible".

Why not tell the class just WHO those "radicals" are, what they were *convicted* of, and their present positions in society?
I am so tired | 12:46 p.m. Aug. 23, 2008
of hearing that I'm a racist because I'm conservative and white. I will be the first to vote for a black (or any other color) person for president when they represent my views. People who have views like J.C. Watts, Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Star Parker etc. Problem is, they're all considered "oreos" at best, and race traitors at worst.
Dear "samhill" | 1:06 p.m. Aug. 23, 2008
You complain because people might vote for Obama due to his race.

I'll bet you do NOT complain when people vote for McCain due to HIS race....or vote against Obama due to his.

Are you going to complain if Mormons vote for Mitt Romney, because he's Mormon? No? Why not?

Get off your high horse and learn about the candidates. From YOUR comments, it's obvious you know nothing about Obama and base your opinion of him from what you hear from Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly and Roger Ailes pet project: Fox News.

(Anyone who does not know who Roger Ailes is, is a SERIOUSLY uninformed voter.)
New word... | 2:37 p.m. Aug. 23, 2008
The new word for next month will be: dementia. When does it begin to show? How do we know?

And the film will be of John McCain trying to recall how many homes he owns, what car he drives, and who is really in charge in Iraq.

Dementia. It is a sad case coming at us, but we will all see it more clearly with time. I hope the GOP chooses wisely... in its vp.

To whomever it was who addressed a response to me:

Did you even read my post?

The list of things that you "bet" I would or would not do, indicates to me that if you read it, you are far from understanding it.

Here are some questions for you.

If, as the complaining tone of your posts suggests, you think it is wrong to vote for someone simply because they share a religious membership or vote for/against McCain/Obama because of their race, then what, precisely are you complaining about in my post? From what I can tell, everything I said there should be considered in harmony with what appears to be your general point. That judging an individual based on assumptions of general, categorical characterization is unfair and improper.

That is my point as well.

Furthermore, what in my post prompts you to assume ANYTHING about the height of my horse or my knowledge of or source of opinion on Sen. Obama? Such assumptions appear to be the same kind of prejudicial assessment that we both, apparently, dislike.

So, in short, from whence does your emotional reaction come from? And why?

The little Wizard of Ob and his communist side kick. If there ever was a time for the South to rise again(I'm talkin' votes), it's right now.

Why bring back old history in this story. All you have done is bring in old fire. Most of us was not around at this time. I cannot help what Grandpa done in years passed. Today some of my best friends are black. Today is today and tomorrow we will make the best of what we have.

To: dear "samhill" - you have jumped some serious rails here pal. How does knowing who Roger Ailes is have anything to do with Samhill's original posting? Are you name dropping to impress someone or to hide your ignernce?

If I didn't know the name of the original drummer for "Spinal Tap" would that make me a SERIOUSLY uniformed musician?
