Where does the money go? | 12:41 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Besides producing ads that slam each politician, and maybe to pay for travel expenses, what is the point of raising money in a campaign? Or is that where it goes? What if a candidate made an extremely rare move of donating all the money they had raised to some charity or program for youth or something? It's crazy how any candidate promises to help the country and bring change and better the economy, yet when it comes to campaigning, they throw on their expensive designer suit and travel the country in their private jet, while raising hordes of money as if it's a competition or business. Maybe I could try being a candidate for office and raise a lot of money and when I have enough for my life needs, I'd drop out and live happily ever after.

McCain may indeed win Utah "handily," but he will not win it enthusiastically, unless he excites Utahns/Mormons by picking Romney as his Veep. All of the driving I've done over the last several months arounf Utah, Idaho and Colorado pretty much proves that. In that time period I've seen literally hundreds of Obama bumper stickers (not too mention yard signs), while I've noticed only a grand total of 2 McCain stickers (which means that they're out there, but nobody wants them).

The money is needed mainly for media. Since the country is much too large for the candidate or his surrogates to rely on person-to-person contact, candidates must rely on advertising in the media. Television, particularly, can swallow those funds as fast as they can be raised. Other high cost items are polling and travel.

Why don't we ask why a rich man, and old man like McCain wants to be President?
He has more than enough money to retire and live in LUXURY
What a JERK
His wife is probably glad to get him out from under foot all day
Bot | 6:05 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
The money goes to ensure that the United States doesn't elect an anti-military, pro infanticide, anti-American president who would hasten Armegeddon.
Paul Gibbs | 6:06 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Lumping the name "Abraham Lincoln" in with Reagan and Bush is erroneous. Technically, all belonged to groups calling themselves "The Republican Party", but the Republican Party of Lincoln's era was drastically different than Reagan and Bush's party. Lincoln would likely view today's Republican PArty with profound sadness and embarrasment.
Utah County Republican | 6:22 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Obama is closer to the conservative Mormon values I grew up with than Washington 'maverick' John McCain. That makes Obama also the more Republican choice as the actual Republican is the greater Liberal this time around. Lastly, I was just plan annoyed with McCain with what he said about Romney during the Primaries and frankly I am not going to forget that. I said then I wouldn't vote for McCain, and nothing less than a VP spot for Romney (or Obama picking Hilary) is going to change my mind.

Todd | 6:29 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
If you don't know where campaign contributions go, get educated. There is no excuse to be ignorant. Every expenditure is posted on the web -- or better yet head down to campaign headquarters and volunteer for an afternoon. See contributions in action.
Voice of Reason | 6:48 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Aside from the $$$ question, we're starting to see what many of us strongly suspected would happen as the campaign rolled along to the point where airy generalizations would give way to policy specifics - Obama has plummeted from his charisma-driven lead to a policy-driven 2nd place to McCain's much more solid experience and campaign platform.

As long as the campaign was about fact-free slogans and charisma, Obama was destined to lead McCain. But as more concrete positiions of the candidates on actual policy issues have come to the front, McCain pulls ahead fast, and fairly decisively.

Obama had better come up with better ideas than "inflate your tires to save gas", "plead with Iran to be good at the bargaining table", and "raise taxex for every problem" VERY quickly.

This "new Democrat" is just recycling Old Liberal Ideas that we've seen fail repeatedly for the last forty years.
so Obama | 6:53 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
So Obama leads in Utah, eh? Well, we also should vote for him. Best choice, by far.
michaelh | 7:08 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Utah Country Mormon Republican please read Obamas books before you pronounce Mormon Republican values upon him. The reality of who he really is dwarfs any Steven King novel for shear white knuckle terror. Then again maybe the Obama who wrote the books was not the Obama that Obama knew
Ah, Republican haters | 7:10 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
You're still the old Karl Rovian, obfuscate the details, pretend someone's "just a celebrity", haters you've always been.

Obama has plenty of policy out there, and talks about it in every speech. But he expects you to pay attention to details and read -- something that Utah R-button pushers aren't used to doing.

Ah, well. Utah really doesn't matter one bit in the larger scope of things.
Anonymous | 7:26 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Utahns are embarrassed that they have to vote for McCain, they don't like to advertise this fact by placing McCain stickers on the backs of their minivans.
Obama? | 7:34 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Why would anybody vote for Obama and his ilk such as Ayers, White, Jackson, Flygare, Rezko... The list of real 'winners' goes on and on and on.... Talk about a jerk... Obama is nothing more than a lackey for his handlers. He has no clue and no business running for POTUS, plus he can't think (did you watch the latest debate and his getting trounced?)!!!!
Paul | 7:42 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Obama might be raising more money, but he has to be spending more money by far. My mom made the mistake of sending some money in to Obama (she's a Democrat - yeah, there are some of those in Utah). Now, she gets 1 or 2 letters each day from Obama, asking for more money. One can only hope they come out ahead in that.
Anonymous | 7:44 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
McSame has only raised $595000 ? I heard they had to move that $100000/plate dinner to a smaller location but they could have held it around the smallest table at Dees. Obamas money comes from regular people who care about this country, not wealthy 'donors' who only care about themselves.

A special thanks to 'lack of reason' and michaelh for their re-hash of yesterdays squak-radio shows. If you really would like to know about Obamas plans, go to his website.
Go with a Winner | 7:47 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Utahns realize that a McCain victory will result in more of their family members stuck in endless wars throughout the middle east and elsewhere. They also realize that we do need a drastic change in how we deal with the rest of the world and going to war everytime someone disagrees with the US is not the answer. It's time to seek alternative solutions to issues that affect the future of this country. Obama is the future, McCain is the past.
MEB | 7:50 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
So far, only two accurate posts on this article. Voice of Reason points to McCain's 5 point lead that was just announced this morning. Last election cycle, Kerry had a 7 point lead at this time, then lost it as issues finally came into the spotlight. This time, Obama has already lost his 7 point lead, and quickly turned it into a 5 point deficit. He is proving to be very naive on issues, and his party isn't helping him any in Congress.

And Anonymous has the second accurate post. Utahns are embarrassed that they have to vote for McCain (as are Republicans all over the country).

Doesn't matter, I'm still voting for Bob Barr. I'm one of those Republicans that Anonymous talks about who dislikes McCain. I won't vote for the guy.
Repubs. 11- Dems- 0 | 7:53 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
(McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.)

Obama needs to give all that money and VP to Hillary,
she could have done a better job with it.

If this keeps up, it will be the worst democrat loss since they voted for Old Jef Davis- 1860.

He lost the civil war and a country.
Voting | 8:00 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
I am not voting for McCain. I am voting against Obamanation.
Biggie Smalls | 8:13 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
This weeks poll has Obama leading the old guy by 6 to 7 points. That's a huge lead in a presidential election.

Utah knows a winner when it sees it.
Romney not on ticket | 8:32 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
McCain will NOT put Mitt on his ticket for VP. He will use Mitt to raise funds and then choose somebody else at the last minute. I hope I am wrong. Only then will I contribute to Mitt/McCain. Also If I end up voting for McCain it will be because of Cindy McCain. She should be the one running for ofice.

So Utah has moonbats with too much disposable income. Yawn....
fellow pow won't vote for McCain | 8:34 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Read this...

Most of us who survived that experience are now in our late 60's and 70's. Sadly, we have died and are dying off at a greater rate than our non-POW contemporaries. We experienced injuries and malnutrition that are coming home to roost. So I believe John's age (73) and survival expectation are not good for being elected to serve as our President for 4 or more years.

I can verify that John has an infamous reputation for being a hot head. He has a quick and explosive temper that many have experienced first hand. Folks, quite honestly that is not the finger I want next to that red button.

It is also disappointing to see him take on and support Bush's war in Iraq, even stating we might be there for another 100 years. For me John represents the entrenched and bankrupt policies of Washington-as-usual. The past 7 years have proven to be disastrous for our country. And I believe John's views on war, foreign policy, economics, environment, health care, education, national infrastructure and other important areas are much the same as those of the Bush administration.

NOBAMA | 8:35 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
What specifics has Obama stated? All I hear is"Hope and Change". Give me specifics. Now I know where he stands on ABORTION AND PARTIAL_BIRTH ABORTION.He will defend these horrific procedures to the end. Other than wanting defeat for us in Iraq, he just him-haws on every subject. He goes around quoting Bono and T. Pickens and will probably pick that plagerist Biden as V.Reuters now has McCain up by 3 points over this horse-laugh of a candidate. Yep, I don't care how much money he raises, the grown-ups will show up on Election Day.Plus don't forget the Bradley Effect.Sorry all of you Barry supporters, there will be no Jimmy Carter second term! HA!

well said | 8:38 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
TO: Go with a winner: well said!

I was thinking about that the other day. McCain represents yesterday. Obama is about tomorrow.

We live in tomorrow, not yesterday. By the way, here is an interesting fact that cannot be ignored: annually the US uses 25% of the world's oil and gas consumption, and yet we have only 3% of the world's oil and gas reserves.

We cannot drill our way out of the crisis. It is that simple. 25-----3

Note too, that we are not dealing with"American oil companies," but rather international companies. The eventual oil and gas companies that drill even one more well in America will be international companies. Headquarters in Amsterdam, maybe. That change happened many decades ago and to think that our oil and gas must go to us, is false. Just plain false. Good book to read on a cold winter night is an old one: THE SEVEN SISTERS.

Go Obama!!!

Senator John McCain: "I don't think this country is in a recession."

How can Senator McCain 'fix this country' (as he tells us), when he cannot see that it is broken?
Ted | 8:43 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
To "Ah Republican haters":

The oldest, most shallow ploy in the game is to label someone who disagrees with you a "hater." Get a life. Better yet stop the name-calling. Learn, understand and intelligently discuss the issues.
LawDaniel | 8:49 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
To those who think Democratic Values and LDS Values are not in Harmony.

Let me begin by saying every abortion is a failure, of common sense, of judgment, of economics, of science, etc. No woman is ever happy she has had an abortion. It is a tragic time for her, just ask anyone who has had one.

I am a Democrat and faithful member of the LDS Church. Have you ever read the 1973 proclaimation from the 1st presidency on abortion? First and foremost, grevious sin, NOT MURDER. Second, not a sin in cases of rape, incest, life and good health (including mental health) of the mother.

I am a Democrat because pro-choice allows the positions of our church to be lawful. Think about it, an abortion ban makes the stated position of the LDS Church an illegal option. The supposed "pro-life" position only protects the unborn, not the already living. Pro-choice allows for a pro-Agency stance.

Our politics should follow our religion, not vice versa.
Hoosier Daddy | 8:51 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Let the conventions begin! Like the Utah County Republican above. If Romney is on the GOP ticket they will likely get my vote. If Hillary is on the Dem ticket they will likely get my vote.

If both Hillary and Romney are on the national ticket then I will have a tough, prayerful decision to make.
Ozark Bubba | 8:52 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008

I thought Utahns where too close minded to support anyone other than a Republican. So much for that theory.
Lee | 9:25 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
TO LAW DANIEL, I guess the same applies to slavery? Plus you say, "Ask someone who has had an abortion'? How about the little baby that had his limbs and organs ripped out? ASK THEM! You can't ask them, THEY"RE DEAD!Your sugar-coated message does not justify murder.

Utahns giving to Obama.

See, I told you.
Not ALL Utahns are backwards, backwoods rednecks.
DMH | 9:59 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
I am actually not surprised that Obama has made more money here, because McCain has burned his bridges with us a long time ago. However, when election time comes around, I cannot vote for either Obama or McCain, because I don't believe in either of their platforms. We need to face the truth that this country can no longer rely on either party to help us as citizens. My vote will have to go to the independant Ralph Nader, because he makes more sense and he knows how to fix our economic problems. The only other candidate that had that capabability was Mitt Romney and he has dropped out. So when left to pick between two real losers, I have to pick someone else.

SOME Utahns are communists.
Jared | 10:13 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
LawDaniel: No, most Pro-Life people support abortion in extreme situations (rape, incest, life of mother). The Pro-Choice platform is not about that, it is about allowing abortions in all situations. Yes, there are some pro-life people who want to rule out all abortions regardless of situation but they are a minority. However, the majority of "pro-choice" people want abortions to be allowed for whatever reason.

Money won't help the Obama-Nation, stupid voters will. Obama will win because the USA has become a nation of whinning, lazy, stupid, soft crybabies who have no sense of resposibility or the cost of freedom and prosperity. The sheepeople will get who they deserve.
Win Win | 10:22 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
It's time to call in Mitt before the convention. Mitt can milk Utah for money. McCain can take the money and run without Mitt. It's a win, win.

re: Paul Gibbs | 6:06 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008

I think Reagan would view what Abe & dubya are doing/did do with profound irritation.

Then, again, I'm certain Thomas Jefferson is greatly disturbed by not only what the Democratic Party has become but how American political system has devolved.

I see the usual neocon wack jobs are at it again with the communistic conspiracy theories.
Now it's Senator Obama who is a commie.

Q: What's the difference between The John Birch Society and the modern American conservative movement?

A: Absolutely nothing.
