Nice! As a Westminster Alum, I don't think I've ever been this proud of my Alma Mater! It's nice to see one college president in this state not bowing down to the pressures of the whacked-out local culture!

Colleges do not want to be responsible for enforcing the law and do not want to be extra liable for under age drinkers overdosing/dying from alcohol.

Colleges do not want the lawsuits.

Glad to see a secular administrator raise their voice for the good of the community.

Great, here's and idea: lower the drinking age so that now binge drinking can become a high school sport. Brilliant.

Lowering the age limit will only increase consumption, it won't decrease it and it won't change the statistics of DUI's, thefts, murders, homicides etc. Do you get the educated point?

I was brought up LDS. Back when I was a teenager living under my parents roof I did as most normal teens do & drank with friends at parties, on road trips (not while ON the road, but out of town), etc. I never drank & drove, drank to excess, i.e. vomiting, passing out, etc. but rather enjoyed the social aspect and of course, the 'buzz.' Yes, I was a responsible teenage drinker, imagine that. I remember sitting at Thanksgiving dinner w/ my family when I was 18 years old & my Dad said, 'can you believe some people like to drink until they fall down drunk and pass out in their own vomit? Some people think that's fun!' As an 18 year old I knew this was an ignorant statement, sensationalized to scare me from drinking the demon rum. I went to BYU HI when the legal drinking age in Hawaii was 18. My classmates would ride the city bus to Waikiki & get HAMMERED every weekend. My friend & I would have a beer or two on the beach after surfing & call it good. Scare tactics won't work, education & communication will.

Oh you Utah Mormons and your backword puritan (SP?) values. I do have to agree that 21 seems to be a good age to allow legal drinking. To the guy who says that military service should have no place in this debate I ask you this, "Have you ever served?"
Little to do with Alcohol | 6:56 a.m. Aug. 21, 2008
@John S., adding to what Kevin said, Finland's suicide rate is similar to most in the region and almost all happen in the winter. Another factor, in addition to the darkness is that most of these suicides involve older men in mostly rural/agricultural areas. The fast changing economies in this region and changes in agricultural regulations/practices have hit this segment of the population quite hard. Many were able to make a good living as small farmers selling locally, but now have been displaced by a sudden change toward large corporate farming and new regulations. This is what the problem really is... a guy that has worked his whole life at something and now cannot support himself when he's older. This gets to him most in the winter when he can't work outside and it is depressingly dark for months. This has quite little to do with alcohol.

I don't understand how the same folks who ban trans fats and fast food restaurants, who want to control the types of food available to the public, and who harp on about "dangerous" fossil fuels, are the same people who want to lower the legal age for drinking a legitimately toxic substance.

You'd be hard pressed to find a 21 year old who has waited until their 21st birthday to start drinking. Indeed, 18 year olds are allowed to vote, join the military, and drive automobiles, so why not be able to legally drink?
