I'm looking forward to going to the Weber St. game, it'll be nice to give Coach Mac a good homecoming.

And I'm glad BYU decided they weren't too, uh, elite to play Utah State.
Yjumper | 1:08 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Northern Iowa is a very talented team at the skill positions. The Cougars will dominate this game at the line on both sides of the ball. I expect a ton of carries for Unga and Vakapuna with BYU overpowering the quick, talented players of Northern Iowa. The Cougs will absolutely dominate time of possetion. I also expect a very tough test for our LB's and DB's to start the season. UNI has a very high powered offense!
Hmmm... | 1:20 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
BYU is also really close to scheduling an away game at Tulane for the opener of next year's season. They're not great, but should be better than a Div.1-AA school for those arguing against strength of schedule. BYU will need all the BCS points they can get next year when they return almost the entire offense and defense for a BCS/national championship run. If you think this year people have high expectations, wait until next year. Hall, Collie, and Pitta as seniors... with Unga, DiLuigi, Chambers, Ashworth, Jacobsen, Hafoka, Sorenson on offense... Jorgenson and pretty much the entire defense returning... our toughest conference games (TCU, Air Force, Utah) at home...

Next year it would be tough to keep an undefeated BYU team out of the national championship game. This year their schedule won't be strong enough. I think they can make it to a BCS game if they finish 12-0 or 11-1 this year. I don't think they're ranked high enough to start the season and won't move up enough to merit serious national championship talk.

In any case, some fun things to look forward to for BYU fans... if they keep winning.

Stupid!
I am going to try and sum up all of these comments so that you can just read my comment and ignore everyone else's and go back to work.
Collie, are you living right?
4th and 18
Magic
We're better than you because at least we aren't playing Weber State
Northern Iowa is a joke and we should win easily
etc
etc.

Oh and for future postings it will include something like this
At least we didn't lose to Air Force and UNLV.
National Championships (please stop this, all you're doing is embarassing the rest of us and now we have to stop inviting you to the creamery)
Anything religious when we are supposed to be talking about football.
Comments about your mom, my mom, Bronco's mom etc.
Any mention of the BCS and how Utah did it and BYU will never do it, or do it, yada yada yada

Now, that should cover all the comments taht people will make until we actually start playing REAL FOOTBALL. Stupid!

I've been a couger fan my whole life, and i am the last one to say anything positive about the U, but i would much rather see them go undefeated untill the byu game because that would make the holy war that much more significant.
good sign | 2:41 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
I think it's a good sign Collie is frustrated right now having to watch from the sidelines. That means he cares a lot about this game and the team and his competitve fire is burning strong. He's going to be great this year as long as his leg heals up properly.

Big Difference | 2:49 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Here's the difference between BYU scheduling Northern Iowa, and the "u" scheduling Weber State. BYU scheduled Northern Iowa at the last second when Nevada backed out of their contracted game for the year, and BYU had a home game to fill and no D-1A takers - they had no other real choice. Utah scheduled Weber State because they WANTED to! You know, to toughen up the ol' home schedule and help to sell more season tickets! Here's a comparison - what do you call 45,000 fans in RES? A sell out (or a "give-out")! What do you call 45,000 fans at LES? A HUGE disappointment (and a coach on the way out). The "u" will never really compare to BYU on a year-in, year-out basis. Sure, they might get lucky for a year or two (or longer, if Gary Crowton gets resurrected at BYU), but over the long haul, BYU will always be better, more consistent, and get more recognition. "u" will always just be jealous. Hey, "u" fans, enjoy your trip to Ann Arbor. At least they didn't schedule "u" for homecoming!
Hmmm... | 3:00 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
I admit to being a little bit worried about Washington's Jake Locker. I hope BYU's defensive line can put pressure on him and I hope the linebackers don't let him slip out for any big plays. I don't think Washington is very experienced in their offensive skill positions, thank goodness. I think this game and the TCU game are the most critical games of the season. Yes, I think they're both more critical than the Utah game because both will determine BYU's confidence and motivation going into that game. I think how Washington plays at Oregon in week one will be a good indication of what to expect. And if TCU plays Oklahoma close, BYU had better be worried about that game in Fort Worth.

As for the Utah game, I don't think it will be fair to use the Michigan game as a measuring stick. We'll just see how many touchdowns they can score against UNLV.
Northern Iowa | 3:07 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
I just noticed that the Panthers start and end their season in UTAH!

Aug. 30 at BYU
Nov. 22 at S. Utah
NIU | 3:09 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Though it returns just 13 starters from last season's 12-1 unit, Northern Iowa has been picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference.

All eyes will be on junior quarterback Pat Grace, who takes over for four-year starter Eric Sanders. Grace is listed at 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, and his ability to run the football should give the Panthers a new wrinkle on offense.

Of course, the Panthers will likely air it out as much as ever, and that's where Grace's two years as a backup to Sanders will come in handy.

Replacing Sanders isn't Northern Iowa's biggest concern offensively. The Panthers must replace four starters on their offensive line, including two players - Chad Rinehart and Brandon Keith - who were selected in the NFL Draft.

Northern Iowa returns seven of the 11 starters from a unit that ranked seventh in the nation in scoring defense last season. Running back Corey Lewis is within reach of the school's record for rushing yardage, and the wide receiving corps, led by the explosive Johnny Gray and 6-foot-4 senior Victor Williams, should give Grace plenty of options.

"What is larger, Max Hall's helmet or a hot air balloon?"

Finally, we get down to some important topics. I would go with a hot air balloon. But not by much -- I don't like Max Hall's helmet either. It's awkward.
Tune Up | 3:50 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Northern Iowa will be breaking in a new option quarterback with a new offensive line. Should be a good tune up for the option attack BYU will be facing against Washington's running QB.
I smell arrogance. Nope its BYU. | 4:05 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
I love how all the Zoobies are saying they will go undefeated this year. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Sorry. Nor will Utah for that matter. You have TCU- AWAY. You have UCLA. (meh, you might get a win there. Maybe by one point...) You have Washington who has a QB that for fall camp is reminding people of TIM TEBOW. And THEY ARE AWAY. And finally, you have Utah. AWAY. Get your head out of the clouds and take the arrogance out of your ears. I will even say that BYU will have only 2 losses coming to salt lake. But no less.

attendence smack | 4:16 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
You can't be a BYU fan if you don't use the 'ol attendence smack talk. Our stadium is bigger, we sell it out. (If by sell-out you mean that you subsidize all your tickets and sell them to the elderly and young mens and womens groups)...FYI Big Difference, contrary to popular belief, NIU wasn't the only team that had an open date on Aug 30th. Lots of respectable teams had open dates on that day, one of them being Texas Tech. Whats unfortunate is that the Coogers were too scared to man up and play a non conference opponent who's had a winning season this decade.
RE big difference | 4:27 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
So if BYU sells out their stadium, maybe they should give out free blue t-shirts. That way it doesnt look like a bowl of skittles from above!!
To Utes by 5 | 4:43 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
The funny thing about ute fan is that he/she/it does not realize that they are playing the mighty Weber State next year. I find it funny that ute fans are so quick to fire their sniper shots at BYU anonymously on the internet from their mothers basement, but the problem is they do not realize how dumb they sound when they open their mouth.

3-0 thats going to be the record for last 3 games played against the Yootes.

The Cucamongan | 6:31 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
With all of the chest thumping going on early in the pre-season by both the fans and yes - even from some of the players, I sense that the Cougars will get ambushed somewhere in the schedule. My hunch will be at TCU or Utah. My suggestion for all is, let's all keep our egos in check. If we do, I am certain that there will be a Fiesta come January 1st.
re: attendance smack | 7:01 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
dude stop and think before you run your mouth off. When nevada droped our game because they were too scared to play us, do you honestly think there was a single division 1 team that wanted to open the season at LES?!? let me answer it for you, no! sure we could have gone out and played a tech or acc team on the road but we needed to fill a HOME game for this season. alot of it has to do with revenue as well as smart scheduling. We weren't goin to get anyone better then N iowa to kick of the season. enter to learn go forth and 18!
Re: re: attendance smack | 7:56 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
If NIU isn't scared to play you, nobody is... Just ask Tulsa, Arizona, UCLA. Revenue? You think people are going to go to that game? I have several friends who are Y fans and not one of them is going to that game. Admit it, Bronconi wanted to dumb down the schedule so he could get to the BCS. By the sound of it, getting to a BCS game will be enough for you Cougar fans.. If you look at BYUs bowl record over the years, the emphasis has been put on getting to bowl games, not winning them.
I smell scared yoots | 9:28 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
It's that time of year again, when the yooties in Yootville start running their weak smack because they are so obsessed with everything BYU and scared stupid because BYU will once again run the table in conference. Are u guys also dressing up your doll collections in BYU garb and sticking them with pins? So who will the yoots stumble against this year? @Michigan? @Wyoming? @New Mexico? vs. BYU? Answer: all of the above.
Fully Invested | 9:52 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
To attendance smack, cite your source. You Ute fans are always pulling teams out of your yooter that would have been happy to give up a home game and come to Provo. So tell me, what D-1 school would have been happy to come to Utah the week that you play Weber St.? Oh! Thats right! Weber St. was your first choice.

As for your comment about not filling LES for the NIU game; hide and watch. Giving up a home game doesn't just mean revenue from gate sales anyway. Travel expenses are also involved, which sometimes aren't even covered by the money paid from the home team. It's called being fiscally responsible. Something we won't hold Ute fans accountable for since most of them are still living on an allowance.
yeah sure sparky | 10:04 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
you don't think anyone will be at the NIU game? recent history suggests otherwise, for example lets say oh e washington! they are half the team NIU is and that game was sold out! once again think before spout off your great intelligence! That game WILL be packed, partly cause its the first game of the year and the aura around the program is so great right now...however i wouldn't expect someone like you to comprehend that because your team just always lets its fans down year after year, so low attendance is pretty much the norm unless a real team like byu comes to town...hall to collie, get used to it!
Buster | 11:41 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Headline: Collie frustrated at inability to compete.

Story: All of those poor Utes who worry about his living right on and off the field are making him just more frustrated.

The problem with Austing Collie? He's good enough to put a real hurt on the Utes and their dream season redux.

Keep it coming Ute Fans. I have the feeling he's going to put a silence on RES more powerful than Beck to Harline. You are BYU's greatest motivators right now, and I am seeing a career game coming up.

Phil Steele ranks teams by listing their 2008 opponents win percentages. BYU is playing a "soft" schedule this year (as soft as IDAHO-Ha)

1. Georgia-Opponents had 98 wins vs. 57 losses. .632
17. Wyoming- they play a quality schedule!!!!
44. Utah State and Michigan- Top 50- GO AGS .546
57. Nevada (schedule is stronger than BYU!!!! - Nevada doesn't need the cougs)
60. UNLV - They don't play patsies
68. UTAH
70. Notre Dame (schedule stronger than BYU!!!)
82. San Diego State-really hard to believe
84. BYU- Opponents had 73 wins vs. 78 losses. Mighty cougs!!! .483
88. IDAHO (0-12 team in the WAC plays teams like the mighty "Cougs"
99. TCU - another mountain west slacker schedule.
Look it up - Google Phil Steele BYU will lose at least 3 games this year, even with this schedule of losers.

RE: Avatar | 7:29 a.m. Aug. 19, 2008
You have too much time and too narrow a focus...
re:avatar | 7:30 a.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Are you suggesting BYU lose MWC games?

That would have flipped the wins vs. losses the other way.

Plus they have a team on their schedule this year that lost to both AF and UNLV.

That one team alone would have made it 75--76.

But of course, then AF and UNLV would have just looked worse.
weak | 7:35 a.m. Aug. 19, 2008
My dad says that BYU will win all their games. Look it up. Google my Dad.

The comment on Utah must have been weak or you would have used it.

Funny how George Steele sells most of his Magazines before the year has started, and he knows more than ESPN, the AP, and the Coaches Poll combined, yada, yada, yada.
Re: Fully Invested | 8:04 a.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Seriously? Allowances? Take an honest look at the people that attend your university and ask yourself how many of them don't depend on their parents for money. I completely understand where that slam comes from, but BYU isn't exactly full of kids working their way through school on their own dime. The basement slam is a good one, but talking about allowance is just stupid.
The game against NIU will be packed. I am not so sure I would be proud of that though. You could earn a little of my respect if only 10-15k people showed up. Send the message that you would prefer Miami to NIU.

"Every year you can count on there being a few surprises in Phil Steele's preseason rankings. But you can't argue with success. ACCORDING TO PRESEASON.STASSEN.COM, STEELE WAS THE MOST ACCURATE WITH HIS RANKINGS LAST YEAR AND HAS BEEN THE MOST ACCURATE OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS."

We at Boise State played Weber State and the Utes the year before. The score really wasn't much different in both games. I think Weber will give the Utes a run for their money.
ESPN? | 12:52 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
The same ESPN gameday crew that's been hating on the Cougars all offseason? Is that the one you're talking about? Herbstreit who said that the Cougars are over-rated and haven't beaten any decent BCS team in 5 years? You beat Utah twice when you were close to double digit favorites. Good for you! You didn't even cover the spread. You think that deserves an invite to a BCS game and you're calling me 'dillusional'? That's rich!

You think you won.

Anything can happen at a BYU/Utah game.

You LOST.

That is "Dillusional"...

I'm not calling you dillusional, I'm saying you are dillusional.
