In the long run, Collie's absence will just make the BYU receiving corp that much deeper and experienced. Collie will be fine. Fui will be fine. And the offense will hit their stride midway through the Northern Iowa game.

It's going to be a fun season.

Just staying humble.... Cougars will be THE BEST IN THE NATION and it won't even be close.

Gut check time!! The Cougs need to take care of business one game at a time and not get too high on themselves. Confidence is great, but over- confidence can bring mistakes.

History has shown 1-2 for the past two seasons in the first 3 games. Play to your potential and you could be 3-0 this year! Go Blue!

Classical Over-use injury...and why does he need to be back for Northern Iowa? Let it heal now and get better so he can be on the field for the important games.

Hate to see a good athlete be off the field but I don't want any excuses when Utah whoops your rear-ends in November...

Get well Collie but... GO UTES !!!

Maybe they should have scheduled a High School team for the opener. I hear Logan High is available.

I'm really neverous about Northern Iowa. That will really impress the BCS voters!

Gretzky | 7:31 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
the picture of Collie hauling in a pass in the las vegas bowl was 2007 not 2008. the vegas bowl is not quite a new years day bowl yet. give it time to become a great bowl just like the holiday/jack murphystadium/qualcomm/san diego bowl is a great showdown due to BYU making it such a good show. of course, UNLV and folks will need to enlarge the stadium a bit (fill in the horseshoe). the stadium is actually one of the better stadiums in the MWC for pure seating comfort. and i am not talking about the rickety makeshift temporary stands they put up during the bowl game. the Ute stadium is also nice despite the scoreboard needing to be moved back a bit so all can see it. and the little scoreboard in the north/east end looks like a little leaguer score board. Cougar stadium has a cramped feeling. they built the stadium back in the early 80's or before and now that everyone has put on a few extra pounds, there is a claustrophobic feeling.
re: Eugene | 7:35 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
I'd hardly call 1-2 in the first 3 games over the last 2 seasons history, but you're right....it does seem as though the first few games are spent trying to figure out exactly how to play, and then after that, BYU is unstoppable.
There's been a lot of talk about BYU not having enough depth this season, but I think this fall camp is a tribute to the Cougar's flexibility. I'm pumped to see Unga, Collie, Vakapuna, and Hall take our offensive drives to the next level. Go Cougars!!
re:Gretzky | 7:56 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
It is too bad that some local wealthy alums can't open up their wallets and help get a bigger stadium built in Provo. I have no doubt that BYU could fill a 70,000 capacity stadium. If they cant get a bigger stadium, then at least some REAL scoreboards and jumbotrons. The ones now are small and very poor.
Palls | 8:01 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
If Chambers beats out Collie, then that can only mean one thing 12-0 and a BCS date.
RE:Northern Iowa | 8:07 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
How do these eweete clowns keeps calling out Northern Iowa, when they have weber freaking state on their schedule? If we get sooooo desperate to put Weber on our schedule, I would be keeping my pie hole shut about anyone else.(side note for you eweetes, 13-1 was the record of Northern Iowa, with one win against an acc school. They would beat 75% of the teams in the MWC, including your boys in red)

But, common sense doesn't happen on the hill...

How funny would it be to have Ron comeback and bite them in the hinny this year?

Nothern Iowa WARNING | 9:21 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Those of you who joke about Northern Iowa don't have the facts. They went undefeated (12-0)last year during the regular season. They scored more points than BYU did. They crushed every team they played. They are FAST. Their defensive players are takeaway specialists and their special teams playes score with regularity. Yes, they are a second division team; but they play Div. I quality football. If the BYU players think this is a "gimmie" game they're going to start the season with a loss. This may end up being a much tougher game than the Utes will face at the Big House. Joke all you want; but this game is the one that scares me the most. Seasoned Cougar Fanatic.

I've been attending games since i was a little kid in the early 90s and I do have my doubts about filling a stadium any bigger than current capacity -- at least on a week to week basis. I've seen too many empty endzone seats for games like UNLV or San Diego State.

The stadium as is is great. The field is one of the best in the country, the setting is beautiful (right up against the mountains, it's pretty amazing on an early fall evening!), and there's really not a bad seat to be found -- the view is great anywhere.

I guess it would be nice if they had matching screens on both endzones, but I do get tired of all the advertising and unnecessary stuff -- I'd rather have no screens. Oh well.

Collie is the real deal, NFL bound for sure. As for Northern Iowa, please!! Cougs 42-14 with the 2nd stringers in the 4th quarter!!
Depth | 9:52 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Yes this Cougar offense is as deep and talented as I can ever remember. Even back in the McMahon era I don't recall our depth being this good. BUT, that could all change in a hurry if Hall is injured. He is the one player who needs to stay healthy all season. Hall is a gambler and a competitor but he needs to realize that his health is the key to a huge season. Same thing with Johnson and the Utes. The QBs have tons to work with but I'm afraid we would see a big dropoff in production and continuity if either of these guys went down. Go Utes and Go Cougs (just a bit more!!)
Hmmm... | 9:52 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
I don't think that the Northern Iowa game is going to be quite as easy as some would make it out to be, but at the same time, it's not going to be this epic battle that others think it will be for some reason. They may hang with BYU for the first 20-30 minutes of the game, but after that, BYU's depth and athleticism (oh, and their seasoned high-powered offense) will put the game out of reach.

I realize that they're one of the best Division 1-AA teams in the nation. But BYU is one of the best Division 1-A teams. It will be like a really good JV team going up against a really good varsity team.

BYU: 42 N. Iowa: 10

Glad to have a dumb comment on Collie. It re-confirms what low-lifes Utah fans are. Hope the Utes practice on side kicks against Weber. Northern Iowa would trounce most of the teams on Utah's schedule.

Re:RE: What 10:01 | 10:37 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
What a stupid comment. BYU and Utah have the same scheudle with the exception of non-conference games....so Northern Iowa will beat Michigan and Oregon State..hmmm
Question | 10:41 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
So if the second string offense is moving the ball incredibly well during the scrimmage does that mean that you have a great offense, or just a really bad defense? Just wondering
geezer | 10:41 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
RE: Northern Iowa
As good as Northern Iowa is reported to be they are still in a lower division. That alone should translate into a BYU win. (along with a home game for the Y) Michigan should beat the U for the same reason. I don't think the Cougs are taking NIU lightly at all. Some of the fans are. Those hoping Collie won't play (to rest his leg) may not realize BYU will need their best players to beat this team. Prediction- NIU will score against a relatively inexperienced Cougar defense. BYU's offense will be the difference. 41-23
Husker fan | 10:42 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
First let me applaud the Utes playing Weber State, it shows that Whittingham and the AD have enough class to invite Coach Mac and his program to play them. In addition the cash stays in state rather than going to Iowa. Secondly aren't "most of the teams on Utah's schedule", that N. Iowa would trounce, also on BYUs schedule?
Re: Re: What? | 10:47 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Speaking of dumb comments...it is hard to put much stock in what you have to say considering 3/4 of Utah's opponents are also BYU's opponents. It is strange how it works that way when you are in the same conference.
Anonymous | 11:07 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Why the animosity towards Collie. Did he insult someone? Or is someone just choosing to be offended? I'm not familiar with the situation, but it doesn't sound like he is hurt enough that I would want to be giving him more motivation. He sounds like a pretty didicated player.

Northern Iowa WARNING | 11:14 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
A quick look at a few of Northern Iowa's games last year:

at Illinois State - W 23-13
Southern Illinois - W 30-24
Youngstown State - W 14-13
New Hampshire - W 38-35

Yes, they killed EVERYBODY!!!

Eastern Washington was one of the better teams from the Football Championship Subdivision last year as well. How did THEY do when they came to Provo? I envision this being a marginally tougher game but with most likely the same result. Of course BYU won't underestimate Northern Iowa, but I will. BYU 52-17
Matt A. | 11:25 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
BYU fans have a point when they mention the Utes have a lower division school (Weber St.) on their schedule too. It's a moot point for a group of fans to blast another for scheduling down when they are guilty of doing the same thing.

Though I have a lot of respect for most BYU fans, I'd say my biggest complaint is directed towards those who try to make the case that Northern Iowa is practically a legitimate Division I-A opponent. It's silly to read. There's a reason why Appalachian St. v. Michigan happens maybe once every 50 years. Be cautious with every opponent, but don't be foolish. Good luck Cougars. Go Utes.
New North Endzone Screens | 11:36 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
The jumbo screen on top of the south endzone is great, it's the one on the north that is seems so outdated with cartoonish graphics during the game. But here's the insider... over on cougarblue.com, I read where someone asked Greg Wrubell and he said that they are installing a new scoreboard that will feature 3 LED video screens. One main (larger) one in the center for the game feed and replays, etc., with two smaller screens (lower left and right) for advertisements and marketing/media related items. It will be pretty exciting to see how this turns out.
Bob in line | 11:52 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
From the BYU football home page, which lists future opponents:

2009
@ Arizona State
Florida State
Utah State

2010
Washington
@ Florida State
@ Utah State

2011
@ Washington
@ Army
Arizona State
Utah State

2012
Army
Washington
Utah State

To the Ute fan who claimed BYU is playing Weber St next year. What is your source of info? It would seem you are incorrect. No, no Weber St. They do play Florida State and Arizona State though.

It would seem that both BYU and Utah have opponents that are not of the high brow this year. I would dare say that Northern Iowa would probably beat Weber State though. This would mean that of the two BYU has the more aggressive non-Div1A opponent.

Isn't that kindof odd for the Utah fans to be so mocking about this team when Weber St is far worse? Or is the word hypocritical?

In any case. If you want to see some odd scheduling go look at some SEC teams. They play some of the toughest opponents possible and balance that with really solid High School football teams.

In any case, enough said on the Weber State/Northern Iowa thing.
jaxs | 12:00 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
for all those that are taking jabs at BYU and Utah for playing Weber State and Northern Iowa. Look at every team in the top 25 USC is the only school who plays a complete Division 1A schedule. The rest have at least one team from the Division 1AA in fact Clemson plays two games against Division 1AA schools Citadel and South Carolina State

Re: Animosity | 12:31 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
"Why the animosity towards Collie?"

Utah fans will never forgive him for the dagger he dealt straight to the heart of Ute Nation with his 4th and 18 catch last season.

Now, Utah fans are scared to death that Collie might have a magical encore performance at RES in November.
Good news, bad news | 12:36 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
The good news is Bronco will have his team's attention for the N. Iowa game and will not let his guys lose their focus and blow it. Part of this is due to what happened last year with Michigan vs. Appalachian State and he will use that as motivation.

The bad news (gather round yooties, this one is for u) is that last year Michigan lost to Appalachian State. They will be fired up to not start this season with an OOC loss to a lesser opponent (u guys). Enjoy!

Northen Iowa should be a good warm-up game for both teams. Northern Iowa plays in the best 1-AA conference and they generally play tough against Division 1-A opponents. They did have a great year last year: 12-1 but barely beating their toughest conference rival Southern Illinois at home and losing to Delaware who played in the Championship game. However they lost a good part of last year's offense. Should be an interesting game, although it will be BYU by 28.
