I have given this subject much thought throughout the years as I have observed the habits of myself, my husband, our nine children and of course others. I agree that we do not really multitask unless at least one of the tasks requires little thought. However, some people are much more adept at switchtasking than others. Personally, I often have a hard time switching tasks or my train of thought. I am amazed, however, at the dexterity of some of my family members in switching back and forth between tasks or subjects in a conversation.

i've seen crenshaw's presentation. the exercise's that dennis mentions are a "waste of time" actually demonstrated crenshaw's point and helped me realize how much time I was wasting.
