NBC says it's live when it's not

Even though NBC probably has a lot of "wiz-bang" equipment, it is more difficult to remove that little "LIVE" prompt in the corner than you may think. The equipment to do so may not be in the same location as the delayed broadcast originates, for example. That would involve first sending a copy of the entire broadcast to the location where the equipment resides, then, making another copy with the "LIVE" prompt removed. That is essentially done "frame by frame" for analog broadcasts, which most of us still use. Since there are 30 frames per second in the TV signal, there are 108,000 frames per hour. It is not trivial to remove the "LIVE" prompt in 108,000 corners per hour! Maybe you should do what I do to remove the annoying banner at the bottom of the screen on news and some sports broadcasts: I tape a strip of black plastic at the bottom of my TV screen to cover it up. So, get a square piece of opaque paper and tape it over the corner of your screen; no more terrible "LIVE" prompt on your screen!

"And it's disconcerting to have to rely 100 percent on sportscasters". I have a solution to your problem of relying on the announcers. Watch gymnastics more often. Also, if you watch sports consistenly then you can figure what team or individual is better. I don't watch gymnastics except when it's the olympics. It's not tough to figure out when someone messes up. I think NBC does just fine and I watch every night.

Team Handball is the Summer Olympic version of curling. An odd looking sport, with incomprehensible rules played in other countries. Yet like curling, it can have an enjoyment factor if you actually watch it for a while. That's what the channel changer is for, move on if you just don't like it. Unlike our political games to come which will be on all the channels and the same time and all show the same boring drivel.

Many of the events are commentated on from NYC or someplace other than China. If you watch close you can tell it's just a couple people watching the events on a tv someplace and recording the commentary. Most the time it's not noticeable, but there are moments when it is.

Here is a little secret to avoiding the "Live" logo in the upper left screen: Show the program Live! It is only 1 hour difference and we would love to watch it live. Leave it to NBC, the communists that they are, to tell us how we should watch the Olympics. I sure loved watching the gymnastics final until midnight. They could have shown it live and it would have ended at 11pm

They would, but KSL doesn't want to pre-empt it's precious 6:00 news hour.

It was great to go to the web site and see who won the woman's gymnastics all around before it was even over. Since we are delayed one hour the results are posted on the web site about 30 min before the event concluded on TV.

Regardless of how "hard" it is to allegedly cover or remove the "Live" from the screen, it is still deceptive. NBC knows better, and they know it still works on a certain percentage of viewers to leave it visible.

Speaking of synchronized diving, why is it even in the Olympics (what is the requirement for a minimum number of participants world wide in this sport: six?) And, why is NBC even showing it, during prime time, no less!

The thing that the editor of this article failed to mention that the Team Handball federation is established last Month here in Salt Lake City, and we are trying to promote the sport.

I think an editor sport should have enough knowledge of news happening in his state or even his city.

Handball is highly entertaining if you play it and watch it and become familiar with the rules, it's also so physical so it fits American and it is not as physical as NFL but for sure it is more physical than NBA and even faster paced.

Watch the games on TV, and get familiar with it, you will enjoy it.
