Comments about ‘Salt Lake City theater-site talks are under way’

I'm glad to read that Ms. Love is questioning the need for this theater and hope others on the City Council will do the same. Bill Becker and the Mayor have a lot of pretty things to say about the theater, but no real concrete data underneath them, and the City Council should not rush into greenlighting this project simply because of the project in Sandy. Salt Lake already has two "Broadway-style" theaters - Capitol and Kingsbury. If someone could explain to me why those two theaters are not sufficient for our city, I'd love to know. Instead, the city wants to build this mega-Walmart-theater downtown and in the process what will happen to Capitol and Kingsbury? Will we lose these beautiful historic theaters? Can Mr. Becker really say we will not? And if he does say that, is it the truth or just more pretty words?

If Ms. Remington Love doesn't understand the need for this theatre in downtown SLC, she shouldn't be on the city council.

The Capitol and Kingsbury aren't going to go away just because we build a larger theatre. Many national touring shows cannot come to SLC because we do not have a large enough theatre to accommodate their productions and make it financially feasible for them to come here, unless they did something like doubling their ticket prices, which people here cannot afford.

There are more than enough arts productions to fill all 3 theatres.

I thought the Sandy one was already funded and in the planning stages to be built.....why are the Beckers trying to get it built in SLC? Is this still sore loser syndrome because of the soccer stadium?

Downtown is a better location for a theater. Sandy doesn't even have sufficient parking for the soccer venue. Ask the surrounding businesses this fall. Downtown is closer to the airport, and many up and coming amenities.

The venue should be located in downtown SLC the capitol of our state. Spreading venues across miles that are not convenient to reach, especially for out-of-towners and the performers themselves makes no sense. Let's make downtown SLC the core of our state as it was meant to be. Why are all these outlying areas trying to become the big cheese?
