Let me get this straight in case I don't get it? Georgia invades a Tiny Separate State, one of Russia's Buddies. Russia swiftly Defends this small "Buddy" State which has been independent since like 1991. It then invades Georgia in retaliation, for invading their "Buddy", and we back "Georgia"?
We should be on Georgia for disrupting the peace to begin with, and pleading with Russia to give Georgia a break, not demanding anything from them, unless I am missing a BIG PART OF THE PUZZLE here. We should be Russia's Best Friend in helping them Democratize, not aiding Georgia? If Georgia instigated the attack by picking on an ally of Russia, they are in the wrong, right? I am missing some major pieces to this story I think??? SOmeone Explain it to me PLEASE!
well done rusisia
yes I think that is a very good response from the Russians as USA and European Union have been dominant on policy making for their own intrests. They have attacked two soverign countries under a pretext of lies. They have taken Russia for granted and trying to fool them in a trick for their defense shield in Europe. I think that Russia should take a firm stance and defend its allies and business partners like Iran and Russia must play a balancing role in the world politics. This so called new world order under the Bush doctrine of deceptions and lies must end otherwise we will be in a new world war.
To hear most media reports on the war, you would think Russia attacked Georgia unprovoked. The reality is that Georgia began a massive attack of South Ossetia at midnight on August 7th with tanks, multiple-launch rockets and jets. The Georgian attack was shown on BBC News that night. Two hours later Russia called an emergency meeting of the Security Council demanding that Georgia stop the attack. The Security Counsel played politics in the face of the Georgian onslaught. They couldn't even come up with a statement, let alone a resolution. All morning Georgia pounded the city with heavy artillery-rockets and bombs. Ossetians only had small arms (machine guns and rifles) to defend themselves. By noon, Georgia had taken the city. 1,500 civilians were slaughtered, including 12 Russian peacekeepers. The international community, including the US, did nothing to stop the attack. Around noon, Russia ordered its troops to move in. I wonder what the U.S would have done, if their peacekeepers were attacked.
Let's make this Loud & Clear. It was the American's who advised Georgia NOT to take the action they did. Now it is the Russians who are overreacting to the situation. They want the power and they want to take over countries and this is a good excuse to start doing that. I think that Putin is jealous that Russia hasn't been involved in the world conflicts lately and they desire to get involved.
Isn't it time that the Church pulls the Missionaries out of Russia?
Hope this all gets resolved before my son turns 18.
Pray.
Sounds like the Russians are trying to blackmail us. Lest they forget, we dont negotiate with terrorists. That is pretty much what they are. Now that they actually have some money from their natural gas resources, they are back on the war path that is their main objective. I cant believe these people have no problem attacking, killing, looting, and plundering one of their neighbors for unjust claims. It seems that Russia couldnt care less about peace (the Iranian UN resolutions involving Iran) so why would we even have them on the UN permanent council. They need to be kicked out or the rest of the permanent countries form a new group that consisted of nations that are peace loving countries. That way we could actually draft meaningful resolutions in a timely manner that can be effective. We need to place all kinds of embargos and resolutions against mother Russia and the rest of the warmongering nations like them, especially Iran.
Too bad we need Russia's oil and Europe needs Russia's natural gas.
Russia, who has waged a bitter and costly war with muslim Chechens is going to change its stance on letting muslims in Iran acquire nuclear weapons? Russia is many things, but suicidal is not among them. The fear of chechens getting their hands on an Iranian nuke will help Russia curb Iran, despite this bluster over Georgia.
It's simple, Russia will not be a friend of U.S..
If Russia give passports to a group people in a certain area of California, then say those people holding Russia passport has the legitimate right to demand for independence. What can you say about it?
No my friend, you got it all correctly! you summed it up right. This is another perfect example of our great foreign policy run by Mr. Bushe's brilient diplomats and republicans like Mr. MCcain. As you recall Bush is great buddies with Mr. Putin of course.
It was my understanding that the "Buddy" decided to split from Georgia -- the current parent country. To me this had nothing to do with Russia.
Not sure who shot first, but this problem should really be between Georgia & the Buddy -- Russia stepping in is much like the USA stepping in if Quebec decided to split off from Canada. Not really our business unless they fire on our turf.
It seems to me that Russia stepped in big time where it shouldn't have.
Don't know if the USA should get involved since it's not really our business either -- war is such a complicated thing.
This is what we get for electing a moron for President (twice).
"Cougarkeith" doesn't sound like he gets any better grades at BYU than did W at Yale.
I agree, there has got to be more to the story because I heard that the US advised Georgia to NOT make the attack but they did it anyway. Then they wanted the US to make airstrikes on Russia?
It would cost less if the US were to remove the people from Georgia and place them in Idaho than it would be if we started a war with Russia.
Our other wars are against terrorism and those I support. This is a war that was one Army vs. another and one lost... that's war.
Threatening to derail efforts to keep the lid on Iran's nuclear program as retaliation for US support of Georgia tells me Putin cares only about power. People are disposable. Perhaps he carries a photo of Stalin in his wallet.
South Ossettia, as you describe as a buddy separate state, was originally part of Georgia. In 1991 they kinda went their own way and If I'm not mistaken there are now many russian people populating the area. Georgia launched the attack to try to bring the area back under its control. Since Georgia has been receiving aid from the US, the Georgian president assumed that if there are military blows that the US would come to the rescue. I hope that they did not get any signals from the US that it would. I think that Russia's oil pipeline goes through South Ossettia. There is no way Russia is going to give up that piece of land. I think that Georgia just has to accept that after 16 years, squatters rights prevail. PS: I seriously doubt Russia has any plans to become democratic. The KGB still rules there and now they're rich with oil money. Georgia, don't pick fights with countries with nukes. I can't see Russia wanting iran to have nukes. I doubt that they trust Iran that much.
you apparently have no knowledge whatsoever about the politics of the region. Putin is set on returning Russia to its former glory and wants to take his place in history along side Lennin and Stalin. He has been posturing for years calling the former east block countries like Poland and Georgia puppets of USA. He has now escalated this retoric to picking a military war with with a weakling like Georgia. Don't be fooled for a second. This is not about Georgia. It's about Russia taking on the USA and sending a message to any other country in the region who gets to close to the west. The cold war is back. This Russian aggression needs to be stopped immediately or this is just the beginning.
There are unknown factors here, but there also also some very wel documented ones...The Russian "Peace keepers" were paid to agitate teh situatioin in Ossetia. They first lobbed bombs accross the border to Georgias territories. Russia then sent their "peacekeepers" into Ossetia. They acted first, but only in a way that could not be traced to them (unbtil they responded as they did.) Georgia responded to the bombs that killed people in Georgia (S. Ossetia.) Russia has a history of deceit and it has not changed with Putin or Mevdevev (sp?) Truth is, Russia also has a history of responding late, in disarray and without enough force. (think of the botched Chechnya response) That is how their military is. This incursion was well planned. They set it up before hand and knew full well the sore they were scratching at. USSR is returning, no doubt. Hitler followed this formula exactly in 1939. I mean exactly.
"Thousands of Russians were killed," said Ivanov, a longtime Putin ally who served with him in the KGB. "They were killed by the Georgian army with American weapons, American ammunition and American instructors preparing for this war. I want to make this loud and clear."
This is a correct statement. It's offensive to the Russians for the U.S. to tell them to halt military action when Russia was simply retaliating for the deaths of Russian peace keepers. Because of U.S. interference thousands of Russians have died.
"We'll think twice" about Iran, Ivanov said in an interview with Bloomberg Television in Moscow today. "We'll keep in mind how our partners acted in this period of crisis which Russia faced," he said. "So far we haven't vetoed UN resolutions" on Iran."
I'm glad that Russia is re-considering its policies regarding its partners who have sided with those who killed Russian peace keepers.
Russia shouldn't tolerate interference when it results in the deaths of thousands of Russians. Georgia attacked and killed Russian peace keepers. What part of this doesn't the U.S. government understand? If Mexico or any other country behaved like Georgia did we would retaliate in a quick and forceful manner.
