BYU football: Ashworth turning heads

What's an Ash Worth? | 4:51 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Not surprisingly, Ashworth is running good routes, beating defensers and scoring touchdowns in practice. Although it may be a surprise to freshman WR O'Neil Chambers, who told ESPN recently that some of the BYU WRs are no good and don't belong on the team. Ashworth is looking like the #3 receiver, so we assume Chambers meant someone else. Mahuika? Maybe, Mahuika has been "hurt" lately with "sore muscles," so maybe that's who Chambers meant. He couldn't have meant Hafoka, who caught a 40 yd TD in a recent scrimmage and has impressed coaches. So who are these mystery WRs who don't belong on the team? Good job Ashworth, getting yourself back in shape post-mission and working to contribute in the WR rotation.

On the second point, scheduling Nevada for 2010, I say Yawn and yuck! We should never have given NV another game after they pulled out of their game with us last year. They need the game far more than we do, so let's schedule teams who don't leave us in the lurch like NV did. Northern Iowa is better than NV and was hapy to play us on our terms.

I wouldn't schedule Nevada due to their behaviour.

It didn't make the papers, at least that I read, but the stories of the fans in Reno was outright embarrassing. If you hear stories about Ute and Cougar fans being idiots. Magnify this by about 20 times and you have the druken behaviour of the Wolfpack fan.

I would touch'em with a 40 foot pole.

Great for luke ashworth. He's going to be a great contributor.

As for Jordan Pendelton...Coach Hill needs to lighten up. If a media guy wants to talk to a player, he should be able to. Maybe coach Hill is mad because the media doesn't want to talk to him. Jordan Pendelton is a good kid. He should have been able to talk to the Media without any interference from a power hungry coach.

Just coach the kids Hill and leave media decisions to the Head Coach!

"Heated Exchange?" | 8:53 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
This description makes it sound worse than it apparently was. It sounds like Hill didn't even hear what Pendleton said. Pendleton called Hill a name - a mild one and to no one in particular - as he was following the coach into the locker room and unfortunately it was overheard by reporters. That is not a "heated exchange" by any stretch. They both could have handled it better and a few words by Mendenhall likely clarified that to them.

And as far as who Chambers could have been referring to - try Mahuika, Reed or any other upper classman who can't hold one of these freshman or redshirt freshman's jock. Great guys all I'm sure but they just can't hang with the new kids.

I have cousins, avid BYU fans, who live in Reno and also have close contacts within the Nevada football program who reported that they were shocked by some of the "potty mouthed" BYU players who played in the game in Reno.

Nevada will be a good opponent in 2010. It'll give BYU an opportunity to earn a little redemption from the Crowton-led debacle in 2002.
The Name | 9:15 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
He called him a scruffy nerf herder
UN Fans | 10:07 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
I went to the Nevada game @ Reno, Nevada fans are in NO position to be critical of anyone. Worst fans ever by a long shot. Topping: Wyoming, UNLV, New Mexico, and Hawaii on combined. They are terrible!
re: the Name | 10:08 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
No. Ask PR. Icky name was used.

Ashworth will probably be an all-american like Harvy Unga will.

I think early success for the Coug's this year depends on how hot the offense is. It sounds like the defense is getting pounded in scrimmages. Does this translate into super offense or poor defense? I'm guessing a little of both. We've lost a lot of speed at linebacker and have inexperienced defensive backs. Fearless prediction- The offense will have to start red hot for the Cougars to win most of the our early games. Hopefully the D will come around later.

I personally like that Coach Hill got after Pendleton. Hill is a huge asset to the Y's staff, and with the exception of the 96 team, BYU now has a defense year in and year out that is very respectable... they even know how to tackle instead of trying to shoulder people to the ground like we have seen at the Y for 20 plus years. Keep bringing it Coach Hill!

I got called a scruffy nerf herder once and almost killed the guy. There is no place on this planet for that kind of verbal abuse.

Thanks to Bronco for not letting this kid of trash talk go unchecked.

I'm just grateful that my parents never allowed that kind of language in my home.
Interesting | 12:00 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Did anyone else notice Nevada didn't want to play till Hall, Collie, and Pitta all graduated.
utah_man18 | 1:13 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Did anyone else notice that stupid comments like that of "Interesting" are the reason byu is treated like they are by Nevada fans? Don't flatter your team- no athletic director is going to look at a schedule and think "oh, we better get out of that game, just look at these players...." Despite what you may think, teams aren't scared of your precious cougs.

I wonder if Pendleton is finding it hard to adjust to post-Bingham High life where he was the big star receiver. Just curious.

Regarding worst fans:
I've been to away conference games for all teams except TCU. Outside the MWC I have been to games in Fresno, Miss St, GA Tech, Notre Dame, AZ, AZ ST, Tulsa and UTEP. In my experience Wyo is the worst. Wyo's pep club was chanting obscenities during the game I saw, being Ty Detmer's last year.
WY fans are the worst and are proud of it.
Just gets worse | 1:48 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
They probably didn't want to play against Beck, Harline, and Watkins either. It's a slippery slope.

Luke Ashworth is going to be better than Austin Collie if the coaches play him as much. Now, I have nothing against Collie, he is amazing, so I don't want people dissing me because of this. However, Ashworth was pretty good as a freshman, and he is only going to get better as time goes on. I hope Mendenhall plays him!
JGJIV | 3:37 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
If Ashworth and Chambers live up to their potential, in 2009 BYU will have Collie, Jacobson, Ashworth, Chambers, Hafoka?, Pitta, George, Unga and Diluigi catching passes.

2009 should be really fun if offensive lineman step up...especially with FL State and AZ State on the schedule....AND because that may finally be the year that the Cougars crush the utes (not going to happen in 08).
re; ute_man18 | 4:47 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
so you don't think that teams look at the caliber of talent their opposition has??? lol you do realize that is why nevada backed out this year, right? they said their schedule was already to difficult and wanted to play a 1-AA team, which means we were too GOOD! get a clue, i wouldn't be surprised if the reason utah jumped on the michigan one and done game is because attrition has plagued their offense all of their players will be new along with rookie coach. Im not saying all scheduling is done this way but in the case of nevada that is the reason they backed out and it should be obvious even to someone as stupid as you...
Re; ute_man18 | 5:11 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Right, no thought of a team's power. Why do you think Utah scheduled Weber, for the national press coverage?
Nevada Power | 5:54 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
UNR looks to have the best offense in the WAC (yeah, the other conference that the MWC is better than, even though they went to the BCS the last 2 seasons). They did schedule down to get a guaranteed win. Maybe they wanted a crack at BCS consideration if they won out this season (which won't happen).

The real Prickley Pear (which is the long version of what Pendleton called Hill) is the timing of UNR backing out when they did. BYU had no time to set up anything decent. BYU was missing a sixth home game and no one wanted to come to Provo this year on short notice. 12-1 Northern Iowa was a great fit considering how bad this could have been. Option #2 would have been FSU in Talahassee.
No Nevada! | 8:24 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Nevada should have been dropped from the schedule forever for the shameless way they broke their contract and slipped out of visiting BYU this year. There are other schools that could have been scheduled in 2010. How about New Mexico State, the only western Div. 1 university that BYU has never played?
Just saying... | 11:23 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
I hope Ashworth is the next great Cougar receiver. The timing will be excellent because he'll be around to take the mantle from Jacobsen after he graduates.

But no matter how good he becomes, he probably won't surpass Collie. I talk with folks inside the program often and they are quietly saying that Austin Collie is the single greatest wideout BYU has ever had. EVER.

That's saying something. Last season was just the tip of the iceberg.

Can you even imagine how good BYU will be on the edges next year with Collie and Jacobsen running circles around the inferior MWC defensive backfields?
john | 11:39 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
I dont know who BYU fans think they are to complain about bad behavior. You must have short memories. I remember not too long ago when BYU football dismissed 6 players because of FELONIES they committed. Most were sexual in nature. You should follow mormon teching and remain HUMBLE.
Optimist | 1:54 p.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Come on fans,

We have a chance for greatness this year. Let's not blow it with personality disputes or name calling.

Let's all hang in their together and put the Hill/Pendleton thing behind us without choosing sides.

As long as we focus on the positives, we will be back to greatness this year.

Reject negative comments as unwanted comments from the press, team mates, or fans.

I attended the BYU game at Nevada but was in a section with older fans and saw no problem (though I was late as son played in a youth fb game that morning). The student section can be different, and another son who sat over there noted some different results. But much of the dissatisfaction from UNR fans may have when a late hit out of bounds knocked out their star RB (led nation in rushing prior year) for the year with a knee injury. Also, the news in Reno was BYU backed out of a prior commitment before, which upset UNR, so maybe that resulted in their late drop last year, a payback deal, or at least that's what the Reno media reported (that BYU dropped a UNR game earlier). Just another perspective.
Re: Optimist | 2:29 p.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Uh, nice concept, but I really don't think you are going to have that much influence on the team by "thinking positive thoughts".
