i know lots and lots of hispanics and minorities! most of them are hard working, we get the jobs that "WHITE" people wont take because they think they're too special or something that they don't need to work. watch go to a restaurant or to an office at night or something ok and you will see who is working there who works late hours to have your places clean and serve you food. if there were no hispanics or minorities then all those lazy white people would have to get put to work! so think about that one. i'm proud to all those minorities who are trying to make their lives better for them and they're families.

I disagree with U economist Perlich when she says the 1965 immigration reforms were a result of the civil rights movement.
Who in their right mind would invite a million low-skilled immigrants each year to compete with our own poor and low-skilled minorities? That is not civil rights.
What the 1965 reforms ARE amounts to a textbook case of unintended consequences.
And Washington keeps asking Ted Kennedy what we should do about it. It's insane.

It's really too bad that we have to cater to a population that can't speak English. It should be a requirement before they come here to speak our language. Why should we have to print everything in English AND Spanish. They came here. I bet they don't provide English signs, etc. where they come from. Why does our Government allow illegals to live here and actually promote it by GIVING them everything they need to live here. I've always been taught that you work for what you want and need. It's really sad that we have to put up with all the destruction in our neighborhoods when we take pride in our homes and yards etc. Why is it that everywhere you go now, especially West Valley, that "Little Mexico's" are popping up all over. We feel like we are being run out of our country. Let's get a grip and do something about it before "they" become the majority.

Any of you posting about how Hispanics work HARDER than the rest of us are full of it. I work full time, my wife works full time, we are both attending Weber State University FULL TIME. We save up to pay about $5,000 a SEMESTER to go there. It's hard to do but we work dang hard for it. Say what you want about the minorities work habits but we Americans ALL work hard for what we have! Nobody has a free pass.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't recall this article being about illegal immigration. So what if there are more combined minorites than whites in a couple of decades. I guess I just don't see how that matters. I guess it is significant since the U.S. has largely been caucasion from the beginning. I do welcome diversity. I attend a Spanish-speaking church and from my experience, they are all very hard-working, they love their families, they do not like handouts, and they are very accepting of those who are different from them. The latinos are such warm people. I am telling you from personal experience, it is very hard to convince a latino to accept help and assistance. They are very proud people and like to work for what they get more so than many Americans I know. I guess maybe we are more entitled somehow for winning the luck of the draw to be born on this particular piece of land.

The projection that non-whites will be a majority by 2042 is about as accurate as projections that Lake Powell will be dry by 2021. Both are based on assumptions that are demonstrably false.

The first is that current immigration patterns will continue, an assumption that is already invalid. Border crossings and cash remittances to Mexico are way down, and polls show that large majorities of Americans are tired of mass immigration. It's doubtful the massive influx of the past decade will continue much longer.

The second is that today's immigrants will retain their high birthrates for the next 40 years. History has shown that birthrates of virtually all immigrant groups drop as they become assimilated. They may be having alot of kids now; if things go as in the past they won't be in the future.

Finally, the census bureau continues to assume that all Hispanics are brown and all multiracial persons are minorities. Both are false, but in a curious twist to the racist "one drop rule" of the Jim Crow South, now the government and minority activists believe that even a small amount of minority blood makes one a member of a minority.

Conclusions we can make from this article:
1. If Republicans do not start reaching out to minorities, they will lose all power.
2. We need to create a welcoming environment that makes people want to assimilate (which includes sharing aspects of their culture to the white majority.) If I was being told I was a murderer, criminal etc. with such hatred as some here are, I wouldn't want to join society and assimilate either.
3. We need to focus on education and allow kids to dream, hope and go to college (Dream Act! in-state tuition for children of all immigrants)
THERE IS NO WAY TO CHANGE THIS TREND, DOING SO WOULD GO AGAINST EVERYTHING AMERICA IS ANYWAY. WE CAN ONLY HELP NEW IMMIGRANTS TO MAKE THIS TRANSITION IF WE ARE TO AVOID SERIOUS PROBLEMS.

Mexico has had trickle down economics for years. America is Mexico's answer to welfare.

Most the Mexicans I've seen can out work must Americans. Mexicans have strong families.

The younger Mexicans try and learn English. In fact, they like American culture.

Conservatives lack faith in America. I live in California. I have seen immigrants from all over the world become Americanized. Sacramento as Ukrainians, Russians, Chinese, Vietnamese and people from many more nations.

I've enjoyed seeing this process of transforming in to an American happening. From actual observations, you can't live in America for long without being Americanized.

How do you expect to live in a land with San Juan, Escalante, Colorado, Spanish Bottom, Spanish Valley, Abajo Mountains, La Sal and others without having some Spanish flavor?

Instead of our neighborhoods becoming "melting pots" of immigrants like the old days, we are now seeing that whites, latinos, etc now have their own neighborhoods.

Whites: Avenues, Sugarhouse, Herriman, West/South Jordan.

Latinos: West Valley, Magna, Glendale

Latios next neighborhoods to "assimilate" = Taylorsville/Bennion/ Kearns.

Close our borders now!!!! We are sick and tired of paying higher taxes for these idiots just because they want a better life!! Improve your own freaking countries, and stay out of ours!!!

What would be really nice is if "Latinos" would learn english. I am sick an tired of having people come into the place of my employment that can't speak english but they still expect you to know what they want.

And if another illegal comes in here, im reporting them. Believe me, its not hard to know who they are, when you work at a bank and you have a line of mexicans come in and need to have a guy come in a cash the checks for them because they can't get an account without a ssn.

It kills me when people say liberals cause the rush of people from mexico when most of the people that hire them are rich republicans and supporters of low wage jobs to make money. the jobs we used to do are now slave wages. constuction is done mostly by them because they will work for a non living wage.

I love the illegals.

All the MS-13 graffiti popping up in Provo, that old hotbed of crime.

The unlicensed illegal who, while driving a $20k car without insurance, destroyed my $2,500 car (which was insured) and came within about 18 inches of killing or seriously injuring my wife - all because she didn't know how to drive, but was on the interstate anyway.

The illegals who park themselves in line in front of me at the store, who know no English and demand Spanish-speaking supervisors serve them, taking up everyone else's time.

Their lack of a basic respect for rule of law - you know, things like insurance, public nuisance, turning DOWN the music, using turn signals, immigration laws. Those little things.

I have lived several years of my life in South America - Argentina, Chile, and Peru, mostly. Trust me - it's different. Also trust me when I say that we do NOT want America to become anything like them.

If folks want to come here legally, more power to them. I'm the grandson of legal immigrants myself. Get a visa - the RIGHT visa. Then come here, work hard, and stay out of trouble. Otherwise, stay home.

Laws that aren't enforced should just be removed from the books. Either we have immigration laws that apply to EVERYBODY, or we should eliminate them.

I have no problem with people from whatever nation, black, yellow, brown, green, who come here legally. I have a big problem with people who come here illegally and then claim that their "rights" are being violated.

The only right illegals should be given is the right to leave this country the same way they came into it.

If we need foreign workers to fill some jobs because their aren't enough domestic workers available or willing to do those jobs, then expand the worker visa program to make it easier for foreigners to come here for temporary employment.

The current system also allows unscrupulous employers to take advantage of illegal aliens with lower than minimum wage pay, unsafe working conditions, and no chance for illegals to file grievances because they're afraid they'll be deported.

Well, I'm glad you know them, but do they get paid a fair wage? Because some people who hire illegals to do that work know that the illegals can't/won't complain, thus creating a sub-class of low-paid "slavery".

Illegal immigration is not exceptable. We have millions of people living in this country, not speaking english, destroying our health-care system, and overcrowding our schools.

First of all, in Utah, minus West Valley, white people are still the majority, and even if we weren't by a slim margin, it doesn't mattter, because all of those mexicans are illegal and don't get a say on how things work, because if they did, they would have stopped all of the anti illegal immigration legislation our state government passsed.

I cannot stand to be at work and have people come up to me and expect me to speak spanish, like its my responsibility to accomodate them. That is not how America works.

If you want to survive here, you have to play by her own rules, and that requires that you speak english and be here legally, because otherwise you won't get far.

The last time my family was planning to Puerto Vallarta on vacation we invited a South African family friend. Not only did he have to have a passport, but he needed a Visa from the Mexican government in order to get into Mexico. How did he qualify for the Visa???? Actually, I found that stat years ago, I believe from the "Center for Immmigration Studies", an online site.

I have written detailed research papers on this very subject. Just because I have facts that go different from your views does not make me uniformed.

I used to think that there isn't a problem with illegal immigration, but when I go to researching, My views changed, and believe I don't just believe anything I read, I got this stuff from valid organizations, and had it backed by more than one source.

Not only is the 70% fact online, but I also was a taught it in middle school about 6 years ago, if anything, that statistic rose.

Dear Actually... If you really want to understand what I'm saying google Pew Hispanic Center and look for their report "Unauthorized Migrants" about illegals dated June 14 2005. Look at page 3. It tells you that 29% of the foreign-born are currently ILLEGAL. Then go to page 16 where it tells you that IF they are from Mexico that percentage jumps to something like 80%.
Looking at Hispanics who don't speak English we can no longer just assume they are here legally BECAUSE SO MANY OF THEM ARE NOT.
Don't sugar coat it. We have lost control of our immigration enforcement and the people are on to the scam by politicians.

Actually, Mr Velasco is part of the problem. He has been here 13 years and can barely speak conversational English because he lives in a little bubble of all non-English speakers. His job, his church, his neighbors. The schools provide translators for parent teacher conferences. Why assimilate? . There is simply no reason to be part of the current neighborhood/community/town state because it will soon be made over into Mexico north.

My grand parents came here legally and the first thing they did was learn English, the didn't even speak their native tongue at home because they wanted every opportunity for their children. I worked with a girl from south of the border who complained her children were doing poorly in English at school so I asked if they only spoke spanish at home, which she said of course they only spoke spanish at home.

With the way government and the PC crowd sway things soon it will be English speakers needing translators at parent teacher conference.

We just moved from a West Valley neighborhood because we no longer felt safe there. In the four years that we lived there we had drive by shootings, armed robbery, drug users and dealers,and domestic violence all of which invovled the WHITE population. West Valley City has a large hispanic population and they are the ones that get the blame for West Valley City's high crime rate, but it is the Whites that have brought crime to West Valley.
