Who wouldn't immigrate to a new country that awarded you for breaking it's laws, gave you free food, healthcare, etc. A country who gives you a drivers license and free education???

Diversity is important. We need more of it in Utah.

Not too surprising. Just fulfilling another prophecy in the scriptures.

So much for their assimilation. They have no desire to become Americans as other immigrants have. The only imigrant group that refused to join the melting pot.

And they wonder why so many are disgusted with them and their actions.
No more illegals! | 5:29 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
I am fine with legal immigration. But, illegal immigration from Mexico has got to stop! Why is it that every other country in the world has to follow rules to immigrate to the US except Mexico? It is because we have no boarder control. We need a wall.
Tom | 5:45 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
...no doubt a result of Utah's sanctuary mindset. The cost to Utah's taxpayers and citizens has been and will continue to be overwhelming. In our family we had a son-in-law hit and nearly killed by an unlicensed, illegal alien who fled back to Mexico. He was left crippled physically and mentally handicapped who once was a bright, effervescent soul and is now unable to care for his wife or children.

The radicals in the Latino population see themselves as recapturing this land that was unrighteously taken from them. We're handing it back on a silver platter so that left-wing idealogues can feel better about themselves and maybe have a Michelle O'Bama moment.

Heaven help us.

When your hospitals begin bleeding due to the costs of treating the illegals (who have no insurance), when your auto insurance rates increase due to illegals (who have no insurance), when your schools and teachers are overwhelmed accomodating the illegals (who have no English), when your foster care system and taxpayers expend more and more time, energy, and money for the placement of illegal children, when costs related to crime, law enforcement, court costs, and jail time escalate, then you will find yourself where Maricopa County, AZ finds itself on a DAILY basis. It's not pretty folks. Educate yourselves now and plan ahead!
Todays outcasts, tomorrows Heros | 7:18 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
In 1847 when pioneers needed a new home they came into what was then Mexico territory without the proper permission. However they needed to do this due to the US not living up to its own constitution.

Mexico turned a blind eye, and showed compassion.

Now we look upon these pioneers as heros.

Someday the brave people we call undocumented will also be looked upon as heros, willing to come into a new land, with their future uncertain, all for the benefit of themselves and their posterity.

History may not repeat, but funny how it rhymes.

I love the Hispanic people I know. My only complaint is that jobs are often now excluding people who ONLY speak English because businesses are realizing their client base is demanding Spanish. It feels like reverse discrimination and seems very un-American to me. It looks like we need to step up the ESL classes and reinforce English as our official language. But, by all means give the spanish-speaking population every opportunity to assimilate.
Enough! | 7:21 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Wow!! Thanks for another story about criminals in our midst. I soooo needed to be reminded of that fact. So now I get to pay for their kids education (but they have more freinds at school who only speak Spanish. Wow, really? I'm thrilled), their medical bills, their welfare needs, and the list goes on and on!!

Let's enforce immigration laws and severely punish those companies that are taking full advantage of slave labor!
Elites vs the people | 7:25 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
In his book "The New Case Against Immigration" Krikorian explains that the leaders of our institutions (government, CHURCHES, corporations, educators, news editors...)have become post-American. They now see themselves as "citizens of the world." And they act accordingly.
But Krikorian also explains that their views are out of sync with the general public.
He calls for reducing legal immigration to about 250,000 a year and coming down hard on those who are here illegally.
The book talks about the impact of immigration on our quality of life (from traffic jams to pollution) and how our government and foreign governments (Mexico in particular) are driving the push for immigration.
Eventually one million immigrants and another one million illegals a year, all with significantly higher birth rates, are going to catch up with us.
The last one out, bring the flag!
2042 | 7:33 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
All Right! In 2042 I will be in the minority, then I will be able to start the fight for equal protection under the new "minority" laws ... what goes around, comes around!

I think legal immigration is great, but immigrants that don't assimilate into the melting pot of the USA create the problems outlined in "American Suicide" a speech by Former Colorado Governor Richard Lamm.

To all the illegals out there.

Just because we broke about every indian treaty ever made and took over their land illegally and just because we took land from you in a war of unprovoked agression, and just because I with regularity break laws including the speed limit DOES NOT MEAN

I don't have the right to complain about you breaking the law.

So don't bother to write and try to defend yourself. All of us have every right to complain about your breaking the law.

HAVE YOU FORGOT YOU GRANDPARENTS THAT CAME FROM OTHER COUNTRIES TO HAVE A NEW LIFE!!! SLC WASNT USA THE TIME THAT MORMONS ARRIVED, THEY ESTABLISH ZION "ILLEGALY"
SO...please dont divide our nation between, white people, black (you already did that), latinos, chinese etc...We need them, They need us....let work together.
Hard work, speak english, no criminal record, pay inmigration fees, we can make a lot of money out of it!!!
They pay taxes out of their paycheks, they cannot have it back...they dont have social security and because of that they dont have Health insurance for free!!! they pay A LOT more to go to the doctor.

What a stupid story. Whites will still be the majority. You cannot lump all the other races together and consider them one. As a Latino I don't think I am part of the Black community.

I think it's time we annexed ourselves with Mexico. After all no one in politics seems to care about our borders, our language or our culture. Now we are nations within a nation. As more low skilled immigrants come to america we approach the dream we've all wanted: America will be a third world country. Thanks be to all of our politicians who "work" so hard for us!
Samantha | 7:51 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
It is very difficult being a school teacher in elementary schools that have non English speaking Latino, Asian, and children of other nationalities. The teacher has to cater to getting past the language barrier, and sometimes to multiple languages. What does that do for the English speaking students?
Anonymous | 7:55 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Latinos DONT have FREE healthcare!!! they need to have social security number, they DONT Driver license, they have a piece of plastic marked like the jews that say "NOT A GOBERMENT ID", they DONT have the reimbursment from the taxes, because they work with fake socials. While WHITE people, can have all those benefits, but some of those WHITE people DONT LIKE TO WORK and they have FREE money from the social security and THOSE LATINOS pay for it from their taxes from their paychecks!!!
They have come to work hard and "live" a new life, those with crminal records, out of our country, but those hard workers families, they need an opportunity!!!
Tran Flint | 8:03 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
I came over here as a political refugee in the 80'. My father was put away in one of the POW camps for years and as soon as he was out, we escaped Vietnam by boat. We were very blessed with the help and graciousness of the American people to take us in and accepted us as Americans. My parents worked as low skilled laborers but managed to put the 3 of us through college.

As a minority, I am very sad to this country drifting away from its path. This country is no longer what it was 30 years ago and it is breaking my heart.

When we bought a house years ago, my wife bought me an American Flag and we have been flying it proudly ever since. I don't see a lot of pride in being Americans from the different minority groups, everyone just want to extract what they can and not want to give back to it.

I am now a software engineer and i work with the the DOD to track drug traffickers and terrorists. "Ask not what your country can do for you but what can you do for your country."
H. | 8:03 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Remember this a country that was initially made up of immigrants. The only people native to this country were the Native Americans, falsely called Indians, and we all know what happened to them. Initially Europeans brought diseases over that killed them, or we killed them off, or took their holdings away from them. Did they always welcome us? NO.

Wouldn't you want to come to this country if all you knew was poverty and political strife? I teach ESL classes to hard-working refugees and immigrants who are just trying to have a better life. Many have experienced violence and hardship that we will never know.

Do we work as hard? Will our kids take lower-paying jobs and then work their way up, or get an education? Many opt out of that. I think we have to get our own act together before being so quick to criticise some of these immigrants.

I have a Hispanic neighbor (a citizen) who does feel her initial land was taken from her. (Look at history and see it did happen in California and New Mexico and Arizona.) But she feels illegals are taking jobs away from her relatives, who are legal.

I love the increase in graffiti, murders, and other crimes. It's great!

Our "leaders," who are all in favor of an open bridge between Mexico and Utah, will continue to preach "compassion" to us--until their neighborhoods are overrun.

Then, they'll move.

Tom, and most uneducated fear mongers of Utah.
You mexican haters need to turn down talk radio get out of your 4 door trucks and do something. Yack, yack, yack.
Don't fault the "left wing ideologues", Utah is 100% controlled by right wingers and so has the US government for the most part till loss of congress end of 06. Don't fault the illegals, you would do the same. Fault the system that caters to their illegally living here. Don't fault who sleeps in the bed, but rather the person who left the door open to the bedroom.
Anonymous | 8:13 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
The guy came to Utah 13 years ago and it looks like he has a nice decent house. It's sad that there a few bad apples in the group but latins are hard workers and they do appreciate the opportunities this country can give them and I am not talking about getting a free ride here because that's not entirely true. These people work 2 jobs, save the last penny so they can give a better life to their families. They do pay taxes, including property taxes, and they don't receive tax refunds because their status. It's funny how some whiners protest about them but they refuse to see the other side of the coin.
Pat | 8:22 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
I am surprised at the openly racist attitudes of Tom and others in this forum. Immigration issues have always been troubling in American history, and the source of hateful vengeance. But to evoke the power of Heaven in that hate seems to confuse the nature of Christianity. Further to brand immigration policies as a left-wing ideology after 8 years of George Bush seems silly. Then to smear Michelle OBama's name and reputation seems childish. Finally, after spending more than a trillion dollars on a war in Iraq, the idea that immigration is some vast cost to tax payers seems out of proportion. Right-wing ideologues and left-wing ideologues fail to offer solutions to problems America faces. Rather, ideologues only offer emotional distortion and hate. Neither are very useful or Christian.

I think its great that Hispanics want to be in this country, but, they ned to READ,WRITE, and SPEAK english! If we go to Mexico we have to know spanish. I can't figure out why they feel that we have to change for them. I feel that illegal immigration should be handled in a way that if you broke the law and came here illeagally you are forever not able to become legal!
Illegal immigration... | 8:27 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
May be a fullfillment of "scriptural prophecy", but it is also a new form of Gadiaton robbery. The prior letter from Anonymous 7:55 suggesting that Latinos don't have feebies may apply to him or her specifically, but those here illegally are, in very fact, a drain on the US economy in very many under-repored ways. The blatant shunning of the need to learn the English language puts a drain on the resources of everything from business to education. Having traveled and lived abroad, it is apparent to me that only in the US is it acceptable to move to a country and expect those citizens to learn your language so that you can thrive. This is bassackwards and wrong. If we think that this is a new wave of Ellis Island, then we sadly mistaken. The melting pot that built this nation to the benifactor of the world in no way resembles this new "melting pot" that is diluting the strength of the most prosperous and generous land on the planet. It may be politically correct, but it is economically and morally skewed.
Mike R. | 8:30 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
We don't need to build a wall or anything like that on the border.

The only thing that we have to do is to make English the official language of Utah and the U.S. and then quit providing services in Spanish. That would accomplish one of two things. Either force immigrants to learn English ASAP or force them to go back to their home country. Problem solved without arresting and deporting anyone. Illegal immigration would take care of itself.
Jean | 8:38 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
If you want to come to our country,GET IN LINE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE! Or better yet, stay in your own country and work to make it better. Mexico has lots of natural resources, beautiful climate, and "Hard-working people". Why don't you stay there and make it a better place for your people? When our ancestors came, they worked hard to learn English and become American in every way. They weren't going to rallies waving the flag of their homeland and trying to get free everything. Every time someone wants my business, I check for their birth certificate if they speak Spanish well and English poorly. If they are not a citizen or do not have a green card, I call INS and report them. I don't support business who hire illegal immigrants. If everyone would do the same, the problem would stop. No jobs for them, no illegal immigrants.
To Minority member | 8:40 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
I understand what your are trying to say, but let me clarify something, only because it bothers me. It is not Reverse Racism/discrimination. Racism, Sexism, and discrimination are the same regardless of Race, Sex or anything else, this trend to call things reverse racism/discrimination is really bothersome, just because it happens to someone in the majority of the population, doesn't make it "reverse".
Dr. Zozo | 8:43 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Illegals don't get free healthcare, huh? Why don't you come spend a night with me in the hospital and I'll show you otherwise. Then you can follow me over to my clinic and watch the same thing. Then how about you talk to one of the social workers here who spends the majority of her time setting up illegals with Medicaid.
Just one concern | 8:43 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
I really don't care about the color of people's skin or where they came from. I would ask for one courtesy though... learn English. I know it may take a few years, but at least give it an effort. Nothing infuriates me faster! I saw a Hispanic man interviewed on the news one time. He had been here ten years and couldn't speak a word of English. That's just ridiculous!

I would not expect to go into another country and force them to speak to me in my native language. I would at least have a dictionary or someone to translate for me. Is it too much to ask the same in America?!
Labels | 8:52 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
You know because one Latino happens to do something wrong, or because a few are illegal immigrants, it doesn't mean all of them are. I don't understand how so many of you people can sit there and place Labels on the whole of the Latino population just because of a few who aren't following the law. Do we punish the whole "non-white" population because of the mistakes of a few? That seems wrong to me.
To Enough! | 8:58 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Because we all know the increase in Crime and Graffiti is Directly contributed by the am amount of immigrants from Mexico in this country...Because it's defiantly NOT from the vast amount of inattentive parents out there, letting the TV teach their Kids all their values. It's sickening that this Country has gotten to the point were all compassion has gone away. This board sounds as if all Mexicans should be treated as illegal immigrants until they can prove that they are not, and that is ridiculous. Entering this country Illegally is wrong, but it seems that this country has more compassion for White inmates in prison, touting "give them another chance" when they have already made their mistakes, and on the other hand, Build a wall to keep out those Illegal immigrants because a small majority of them might cause some issues. We can't have it both ways.
Caucasian from Mexico | 9:00 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
This isn't new news. Radio talk show host have been pointing this out for years. This growth is not due to population growth.

Utah is only a step behind the rest of the Nation. By 2030, Hispanics will be the majority in America. That's only 20 years away.

Caucasians have almost stop growing, since they only have one, two or three kids. Hispanics on the other hand have much larger families. It's time for everyone to start learning Spanish!
to Just one Concern | 9:04 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
It nice that you would take along a dictionary or have someone translate for you. but majority of Americans who travel over seas expect just what you are saying you wouldn't, American's have forced the international business language to be English, mostly because of the power of the Dollar, now that that is failing, how much will we complain when you have to learn German, or French, or Chinese to do business internationally
The pioneers illegal argument. | 9:19 a.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Fascinating. I love the "well, the Mormons were illegal too" argument. FACT: Mexico did not have ANY organized cities or towns in the Great basin when the pioneers arrived, in fact, the Mexican government viewed the vast desert in the same way the U.S. government did, worthless. FACT: The Mormons did NOT bleed the medical or educational system of the Mexican government dry by DEMANDING free education and health care from them. FACT: The Mormons did not demand that the Mexican people learn ENGLISH to facilitate communication with them. Stop making the lame comparison between the two.
If the Mormons had come to Santa Fe or Mexico City and DEMANDED, (in the name of compassion) that all the Mexican people conform to their culture, refuse to intigrate into the Latino culture, and then when some Mexicans balked at that notion, cried "racist" then maybe this stupid Mormons were illegal arugment would have some sand to it.

Some of these nasty neocon anti-Mexican posts crack me up!

They whine and whine and want to string up everybody with a hispanic accent meanwhile mass-migration worldwide continues on its natural course.

Ask yourself, would YOU want to continue living in squalor?

It's a capitalist thing.

To: To Enough!

You wrote:"Build a wall to keep out those Illegal immigrants because a small majority of them might cause some issues"

We want to build the wall because they came over here illegally and caused a strain in the system, health care, education.... not because "a small majority of them might cause some issues" They all cause a major issue, they are "ILLEGAL". You sound just like a typical sympathetic liberal democrat, you just don't get it. Wait until the day when the minorities become the majority, all of the things that is wrong with this country will be magnify 300-400-500 % percents. Looks at California for instance, it has a 16 Billions dollars deficits and why is that? All the illegals and minorities groups living there are all on welfare and whoever want to hold office will have to cater to their need. As soon as someone in office decided to cut down the welfare program or crack down on illegal, gets vote out of office. so there you have it folks the future of the entire United States will looks like Miami and the Los Angeles area. Good Bless America, we will need it.

They have a socialist bent and a propensity to take to the streets. Perfect storm for vote-seeking politicians. Just ask Karl Rove.

Actually, The SW US was taken "fairly" from Mexico. War & Gadsden Purchase aside, to the victor go the spoils.

Mexico whines about our southern border yet theirs is like a police state and their immigration laws are much stricter than ours.

Does the LDS church own the Deseret News?
I'm assuming Mr. Velasco is perfectly legal. The tendency of the pro-illegal contigent is to lump them all together - legal and illegal - and then label those who complain as racists and xenophobes.
Velasco is not the problem; the 20 million lurking about waiting for legalization are the problem!
