Wow, the Republicans on the County Council are "giving in" some. How about just letting the voters decide without any strings attached, and not try to dictate to us what we should support? For a group that traditionally is against big government, they sure do want to control us all.
"Tired of Republicans":
If you want to support the zoo, go ahead! Get your checkbook out and write as big a check as you'd like. Why do you think you and two of your neighbors who want to support the zoo should have the right to force two other unwilling neighbors to pay also?
Looks to me like you're the one who wants control of others.
I agree with "Tired of Republicans" above (even though I am one). It would've been nice/better if they'd just let voters decide without trying to kill the project (I don't believe for a minute that they were just trying to keep the Zoo in line/being "fair"). But this compromise is GOOD.
Thank you to the Republican side of the council for agreeing to this compromise. The money will be well spent and finally the zoo can move forward quicker with their plans and the animals will get their long over due upgrades (their habitats).
Now lets hope Utah voters stick to their track record/voting history in reguards to the Zoo (in the past they've always voted in favor of any money being asked for the zoo.
Please everyone, vote yes on this ballot issue. If you've been to the zoo you know the animals are in great need of better living conditions and this money will provide that for years/decades to come.
I'm guessing you're the usual person who chimes in about their dislike of this ballot issue.
You ask what right do we (a drastically larger group than you imply) who support this ballot/funding/tax for the zoo have to "force" it on those who don't want it. Again the answer, we live in America where most major decisions are made through public vote and majority rules... you're free to vote no, but we're also free to vote yes. Then everyone (both sides) has to live with the results of the vote.
That's just part of living in America, whether you like it or not.
Yeah right. Maybe on your TAXES but once these "improvements" are made you can bet the zoo will jack up the prices and it will cost much more than the $8 it costs now. Also, the Trib article said that the zoo is picking to do the artic exhibit and the African savannah exhibit over the animal hospital and parking. Why? If you go to the Deseret News archives you'll find an article about $1.5 million that the zoo recieved from the skaggs family to build the hospital. If the zoo has the money for that then why aren't they building it? Did they give the money back or shuffle it to anothter project? Hmmmmmm..............
Yes, only $4.00 a year (for people with a home worth $250,000 or more)... so if your home is worth less than that or you're in an apartment then you're effected even less I assume. $4.00 a year isn't that much at all, barely even noticeable.
The biggest need for Hogle Zoo is better habitats for the animals, this is LONG over due (I'm sure all agree on that)... so these should be built first before improving the current animal hospital. Surely the hospital in it's current form can continue to perform adequately in the meantime.
If that money was indeed specifically earmarked for the animal hospital then I'm sure the Zoo has it set asside for that purpose (unless the Skaggs family has told them to go ahead and use it for other things).
